Police Escort Murder Case
File 296 - Straight Ball Match
One day after the events at the K3 restaurant, Conan, Ran, Kogoro, accompanied by Heiji and Kazuha, wait for the shinkansen back to Tokyo. Ran calls Shinichi about Ray Curtis' arrest, as the boy feigns his surprise about his idol's fall from grace.[1] Before Shinichi can hang up, Ran asks him to wait. She recalls Sonoko's question at the department store, asking if she wants to know how Shinichi feels about her.[2] Supported by Kazuha's encouragement, Ran hesitantly begins to ask, but is interrupted by her train's roaring arrival. Shinichi, seeing that Ran is no longer saying anything, bids farewell, leaving Ran blushing and Kazuha unsatisfied.
Once the Tokyo trio is properly seated, Kazuha pounds the window from outside the Shinkansen and shouts at Ran to approach her romantic pursuits by forgoing breaking pitches and instead purely focus on throwing fastballs down the middle. Ran fakes a smile to show that she has understood.
Seconds later, Ran hears voice murmuring the opposite, saying that throwing fastballs is risky. The groups turns to find sergeant Takagi pacing down the aisle in deep thought. Takagi explains that he and Sato are on a mission to escort an apprehended drug dealer, named Senzo Ogura, back to Tokyo. They expect his interrogation will yield the necessary information to bring down his criminal syndicate. As she explains this to Conan and company, Sato looks at Ogura expectantly, but Ogura remains emotionless and tells her dully that he wants coffee. Sato thus sends Takagi to buy coffee. While the sergeant checks his pocket for coins, he drops his ticket to Kazumi Sanada's magic show. Sato is surprised that Takagi likes such things, and the latter explains that Yumi, who had a spare ticket, had asked him to go with her. Sato expresses casual happiness for him, which disappoints Takagi. In truth, his planned "date" with Yumi was a lie. Yumi had formed a plan for Takagi to gauge Sato's feelings by observing her reaction to their date. She had told him that, with Sato, one must first test her with breaking pitches, not fastballs.
As the Shinkansen approaches Mount Fuji, Conan and company notice a train attendant talking to Takagi and Sato in a serious manner. Sato leaves her seat to inspect the bathroom, finding a bag claiming to contain a bomb. Back at the seats, a group of passengers pass Takagi and Ogura, and the latter notices some sort of signal from one of them. Ogura tells Takagi that he needs to use the bathroom urgently, to which Takagi reluctantly agrees. Meanwhile, the bag begins to make a sound, sparking panic amongst the observing crowd. However, Sato pulls the zipper open and only finds a normal alarm clock. She begins interviewing passengers about the prank's perpetrators.
As train enters a tunnel, Takagi takes one of the handcuffs off Ogura and connects it to himself so that Ogura is able to use the bathroom. Several minutes after Ogura’s entry, Takagi impatiently asks whether he is done. Ogura grins and tells him that the police will be unable to obtain any information from him, for he will soon turn into a speechless bird. Concerned Takagi, throws the door open, and is astounded by the sight of Ogura having stabbed himself in the stomach. Takagi tries to call with Sato by phone, but fails to get a signal due to the tunnel. He has thus no choice but to transfer the handcuffs from himself to the railing, and leave Ogura on the toilet while he runs to get Sato. Conan, who is by Sato's side, overhears Takagi’s words and rushes to the toilet with the two police officers. Upon their arrival, they find Ogura dead with the bloody knife beside his inanimate body.
File 297 - The Open Closed Room
Takagi endures Megure's ire as he is blasted over the phone for his grave mistake. Kogoro and Sato debate the sergeants fate, floating the possibility of job dismissal. Takagi receives a call from Yumi asking about the results of their plan; he immediately squashes the conversation due to the severity of the situation.
Conan finds the knife beside the body pointing in a strange direction, and the coagulation of only some of the blood in the toilet. From these two clues, Sato deduces that Ogura has been murdered. She hypothesizes that the murderer planted the fake bomb in the other bathroom to act as a diversion. With one officer busy inspecting the bomb, a conspirer could more easily relay a message to Ogura in the seats, directing him to fake his suicide in the bathroom. A fake knife and bag of anticoagulant-infused blood was prepared inside of the bathroom to realistically portray a stabbing. Naturally, the accompanying officer would temporarily leave Ogura alone to call for help, giving the murderer plenty of time to enter the bathroom, kill Ogura, and destroy any remaining evidence.
Takagi agrees with Sato’s deduction, but points out that transmitting a message which must communicate several complex steps is a rather difficult task. Sato replies that the message could have been as short as “go to the bathroom” because of two reasons. First, between the two bathrooms near Ogura, one had just been searched by Sato, and thus could not be the one that the murderer was referencing. And second, the message did not need to explicitly state what to do, but rather that there was hidden in the toilet; instinct would suffice.
Therefore, remaining problem for Sato and Takagi is that they do not know who communicated with Ogura. Conan knows the answer to the first question; he carefully made observations of the people passing by Takagi and Ogura after Sato had left. Thus, thanks to him, Sato and Takagi are able to quickly find three suspects: Tatsuro Iwakuni, Norio Tokuyama and Akira Akashi. According to Conan and Iwakuni’s recollections, Akashi and Iwakuni were both holding newspapers when they passed Ogura, and Tokuyama was holding a bottle of canned coffee. Tokuyama had then picked up his own newspaper once he returned to his seat. Sato and Conan study the suspects' four items. Sato does not seem to find anything notable, and Conan is also initially stuck. However, he is eventually able to notice something important.
Meanwhile, Takagi explains the situation to the suspects. They all conclude that the police do not have a good reason to suspect them, and are all vehement in their refusal to cooperate once the train reaches Tokyo. Sato and Takagi, knowing that there is little time left, become quite dismayed, but Conan, after learning that Kogoro bought canned coffee, cigarettes, a newspaper about sports (same copy held by Iwakuni), and a newspaper about horse racing (same copy held by Akashi), at Osaka Station, he becomes confident that he has all the information needed to solve the case.
File 298 - Time Trap
The Shinkansen arrives at Tokyo Station and the suspects strongly voice their desire to be dismissed. With the answers still out of their reach and Takagi's job security in extreme jeopardy, Kogoro assures him that he will gladly hire him as his assistant. Suddenly, Kogoro's face contorts and he falls against the wall. Conan positions himself behind the detective and begins his deduction.
Megure arrives with a large number of police officers, and the apprehended culprit is taken to the police station for questioning. He turns out to be a highly valuable source of information; not only does he candidly admit that he killed Ogura so that Ogura would not leak smuggling routes to the police, but he also details those smuggling routes to the police himself. Thanks to this, Takagi and Sato get to avoid the worst possible consequences of their blunder, and escape with a punitive 10% salary deduction for three months.
Sometime later, Sato complains to Yumi about her temporary salary deduction and permanent stain on her resume. While Yumi comforts her, Sato abruptly asks whether she likes Takagi. Yumi is dumbfounded by this question, and replies after being pressed that she does not like Takagi at all. Sato then says that she should stop playing with and torturing the poor sergeant and to go find a "proper man." From these words, Yumi is able to deduce that Sato does like Takagi, and she thus takes out her phone to relay the good news. However, she is reminded of Sato's rude suggestion about her dating life, and decides to withhold the information, wondering why she cares so much about the happiness of others.
Takagi expresses his gratitude to Kogoro, clearly in a downhearted state. Sato swings by and pats him on the back before ordering his participation in a different investigation. Ran and Conan notice the Assistant Inspector's cheerful attitude and remark that something good must have happened.

File 299 - The Meeting
Kogoro drives Ran and Conan through a bumpy "short-cut" that a gas station employee had recommended to him. The group finally emerges from the rough terrain and joins a winding mountain pass, where Conan spots their destination: "The Sunset Mansion." Ran expresses her concern about the menacing structure and the mysteriousness of their invitation, which prompts Kogoro to recall how the letter's writer addressed themself as the "Illusionary Child abandoned by God (神が見捨てし仔の幻影)." Conan, on the other hand, appears confident about their host's identity. Kogoro spots a figure standing in the middle of the road, and slams on the breaks, stopping before an old woman holding an umbrella. She says that her Fiat had stalled on the side of the road and asks if she can hitchhike. Kogoro agrees, letting the old woman sit in the backseat next to Conan. Once settled, she immediately deduces that the group had stopped by a gas station, citing the recently emptied ash tray. She reveals to her surprised hosts that she is Furuyo Senma, a famous detective who can solve mysteries just by listening to witness reports from her rocking chair.
The four arrive at the mansion and notice the expensive lineup of cars that are parked outside. Kogoro is especially impressed by a vintage Alfa Romero, placing his hand on the car roof to take a closer look. His inspection is rebuked by the car's owner, Harufumi Mogi, who is a freelance detective and an associate of Senma. He joins the four in entering the mansion where they see another detective, named Shukuzen Ogami, berating a maid, Aki Ishihara, about the cook's absence, stating that he will prepare the food instead. As the man storms off, the group asks the maid about the event, specifically about who else will be in attendance. She answers that a total of six detectives had agreed to attend: Kogoro, Senma, Mogi, Ogami, a young woman, and a teenager. Ran asks if the invited teenager is Shinichi, prompting Conan deny it and instead suspect Heiji. The maid replies that they failed to contact Shinichi and that Heiji's mother had refused his participation due to upcoming exams. Mogi then asks for the event's host; the maid reveals that she also has never met the individual, recounting her bizarre hiring experience.
She stood in-line for the interview room, watching candidate after candidate leave in disappointment. When she entered the room, the only things she saw were the event's itinerary and guest list sitting atop a computer which displayed text congratulating her on her hiring. The detectives express their intrigue, pointing to the myriad of peculiar facets about the mansion—one of which is the blood stains on the main doors. Another detective, the young woman named Ikumi Souda, appears at the staircase, stating that the entire room was once covered in the blood of many different individuals. She is joined by High School Detective Saguru Hakuba, who says he returned from the United Kingdom after hearing about the opportunity to uncover the mystery behind an enigmatic massacre from forty years ago.
The detectives occupy themselves in the lounge while they wait for their dinner. Ran wins yet another game of poker but is called out by Souda who notices that two of her cards are fused together. The girl pulls the cards apart and finds that coagulated blood had acted as the adhesive, causing her to scream in horror. The maid then enters the room and escorts the group to the dining room.
Upon arrival, they notice the host ominously sitting at the end of the table with a white hood over his head. The host states that he has summoned the detectives to the mansion to find the secret treasure hidden within. Suddenly, the group hears explosions from outside and realize that their cars have been destroyed. The host adds that he also destroyed the ravine bridge and shut off all means of communication with the outside world—thus the detectives are trapped. The game is simple: the detective who finds the hidden treasure first will be the sole recipient of both half of the total fortune and the information on how to escape. Mogi rises from his chair and angrily unmasks the host, only to find a speaker attached to a mannequin—merely an inanimate surrogate for the host's presence. Kogoro demands to know who could be behind this game, only to be ridiculed by his fellow detectives. They first reference the host's title: "Illusionary Child abandoned by God (神が見捨てし仔の幻影)." The word "Illusionary (幻影)" refers to an incorporeal subject like a "phantom." The specific kanji chosen for the word "child (仔)" is only used to refer to animal offspring. "Child abandoned by God (神が見捨てし仔)" represents the one creation unblessed by God in the Bible, the goat. The offspring of a goat is called a "kid." Therefore, the "Illusionary Child abandoned by God" refers to Kid the Phantom Thief, also known as Kaitou Kid.
File 300 - Tragedy
Conan senses Kid's presence within the mansion and smirks, wondering if he can escape the grasp of seven detectives. The maid then enters the room and begins to set the table with various dishes, making sure to work clockwise starting from Saguru. Senma is suspicious of their meal—while Ogami may have prepared the food, the utensils, napkins, and wine glasses were supplied and prepared by the host. If Kaitou Kid wished to poison a specific individual, he could easily do so as each detective sat where their name plaque had designated. Mogi suggests they each swap seats and leave their fate up to chance.
The detectives' fears are alleviated after everyone begins consuming their food without harm. The mannequin begins to speak again, and offers to tell his guests a story which will explain why he chose the Sunset Mansion as the stage for his game. He begins by directing everyone's attention to their plates and utensils; they notice an unsettling emblem depicting a crow. The host reveals that the emblem belonged to a billionaire who mysteriously died half-a-century ago, named Renya Karasuma. The Sunset Mansion served as his custom-built villa which had managed to maintain its beauty even after his death. However, forty years ago, a collection of Japan's most influential and wealthy individuals attended a gathering at the mansion for an event in remembrance of Karasuma. Though in truth, the commemorative event was rather a facade for a three-day auction selling the billionaire's most prized artifacts. On the second night, when the auction was at its height, two drenched men approached the mansion, seeking shelter from the storm raging outside. Although the auctioneer was hesitant at first, his concerns were erased after the two men handed him a leaf instead of money. The event's attendees quickly joined the auctioneer in wrapping the leaf in paper and smoking it like a cigarette—in time, filling the mansion with the hazy fumes. After a while, one man screamed as if he saw the devil and escaped the mansion with a priceless vase, one woman sobbed until her eyes were dry, and one man began manically mutilating his own hand with a pen. Soon, guests began to fight over the artifacts, using the auctioned swords and blades to cut each other down. As the hellish night came to an end, leaving seven dead and dozens more injured, the two men mysteriously vanished, taking the artifacts with them.
Kogoro questions how such a massacre is unknown to the public. The detectives reason that if an individual or a family with major political power was in attendance, their reputations would be destroyed, meaning it would be safer to perform a cover up. The host then states that the reason why chose the mansion as his venue is because he wishes for the detectives to recreate the events of the massacre—killing each other to claim their prize. He begins by giving his guests a clue: "On the night the two travelers looked up at the heavens... the devil descended onto the castle... the King held his treasure and ran wildly, the Princess filled the Holy Grail with her tears, and the Knights tainted their swords with their own blood." Souda scoffs at the host's wishes, voicing her disinterest in playing his game. The host replies that they will play along, as they have already been put under his magical spell. Lastly, he instructs to enter the location of the hidden treasure into the computer in the central tower to be declared the winner.
Suddenly, Mogi begins to clutch his throat in pain, but then reveals he is bluffing. He remains steadfast in his desire to leave. However, this time, Ogami begins to clasp at his throat. He falls to the ground dead. Souda checks his mouth and determines that he was poisoned with potassium cyanide, while Senma tests his tea and finds it is not the source of the poison. Mogi angrily takes the mannequin, believing he can communicate directly with the host, but instead finds cassette tapes linked to a timer—meaning the host's speech was a recording. Based on this new development, Conan steps forward and states that Ogami was targeted and that the killer can be amongst the remaining five detectives.
File 301 - Murder
The detectives analyze the crime scene, but with no strong leads, they instead decide to leave the mansion to confirm the destruction of their vehicles. As the group shuffles out the door, Conan notices Ogami's jagged fingernail.
Kogoro expresses dismay at the sight of his rent-a-car engulfed in flames alongside Souda's Ferrari, Mogi's Alfa Romero, and a mysterious Mercedes-Benz whom they believe belongs to the mansion owner. Ishihara then suggests they check the rear parking lot where she was instructed to park her car. The group agree and are subsequently relieved to find her vehicle still intact. Wanting to check if the valley bridge was destroyed, the detectives climb into the car, but note the risk in putting all of their eggs in one basket—in case the vehicle was sabotaged. Conan suggests flipping coins to decide who will go and who will stay. The group agrees, designating those who flip heads as the riders. The five coins gyrate through the air and perfectly land on five hands, three of which show heads. Kogoro, Mogi, and Senma board Ishihara's car and leave for the bridge. Conan looks down the valley and notices a vintage car with an "X" taped onto the roof. He looks back at Saguru who shows a faint smirk.
Kogoro and Mogi inspect the fallen bridge, and Mogi asks Senma, who remained in the driver's seat, to direct the car lights lower. As Kogoro and Mogi exchange their opinions on the culprit, a flash of light followed by a booming explosion rocks the scene. The car, containing Senma erupts into flames and rolls forward and into the chasm beneath the broken bridge. As a distressed Kogoro calls Senma's name, Mogi ominously smiles.
Back at the mansion, Kogoro and Mogi relay the news of Senma's death to the rest of the group. Believing the culprit may be an outside individual hiding within the mansion, Kogoro suggests the group split up to search the halls. Souda takes Ran and Ishihara with her while Kogoro, Mogi, and Conan form a second group—they leave without Saguru, whom they assume is busy feeding his hawk.
The men find a room containing an expensive piano. They notice both fresh scratches on the piano's rim, likely from Saguru's hawk, and a piece of paper wedged between the keys. Mogi opens the paper and finds it contains the same riddle they were given at the dinner table. Additionally, he deduces that because the note was written using outdated printing methods, someone had created many copies of the page far before the invention of the modern printer, suggesting the story about the massacre forty years ago is likely a fabrication. Conan also notices luminol fluid dripping from the piano's side which likely came from Souda who visited the room prior to their arrival. Kogoro then turns off the lights at the behest of Mogi, revealing words on the piano written in blood illuminated by the luminol. Mogi specifically lingers on the word "trump card (切り札 (Kirifuda))."
Meanwhile, in the bathroom, Souda washes her hands while Ran asks about the whereabouts of Ishihara. Ran exits the bathroom and finds the maid unconscious. Suddenly, Souda sneaks up behind her and covers her mouth with a chloroform cloth, causing her consciousness to also slip. She tucks the two girls into a bathroom stall and makes her exit, only to find herself staring down the barrel of Saguru's gun. He explains that he found the firearm in his room, stuffed under his pillow—deducing that Souda was attempting to frame him for the murders. She raises her arms, saying she had a similar experience while concealing a small gun in the palm of her hand. The sound of a gunshot echoes through the mansion, alerting Kogoro and Mogi to the central wing. The two detectives arrive only to find Saguru dead with a bullet through his heart. Kogoro notices someone ascending the stairs and gives chase, bursting through the door to the central tower. He looks down to see Souda on the floor, poisoned by a trap set in the interior door knob. Mogi arrives and points his gun at Kogoro, stating that there are now only two remaining detectives, and seen as he is not the killer, the culprit must be Kogoro. He proceeds to open fire.
File 302 - Sting
Mogi expresses his sympathies for a dying Kogoro while he lights a cigarette. However, upon placing the wrapping to his lips, he feels a sudden sting which causes him to clutch his throat. He too falls to the ground dead, having been poisoned. Meanwhile, a silhouette views the scene from a collection of monitors in a dark hidden room. Just as they believe the detectives had failed to locate the treasure, the footage to the room cuts out and a string of words appear on the computer behind them. They are shocked to see someone, calling themselves the "Seventh Detective," writing that they have located the treasure's location and beckoning them to the dining hall.
With the case solved, the detectives focus their attention on a means of escape. Souda hears a loud noise emanating from outside of the mansion, which Saguru explains is a police helicopter he called by attaching a message to his hawk. Conan listens closely and notices another more erratic sound mixed in with the noise of the helicopter blades.
Aboard the helicopter, Ran groans about the absence of Kaitou Kid while Mogi and Senma converse about the case. Finding herself still at an emotional and mental end, she opens the door and leaps from the helicopter. As the detectives call out for her, Kogoro shuffles through the crowd and leaps out after her. As the two converge mid-air, Kogoro sheds his suit for a familiar white hand glider. Kid berates her for wishing for death too soon, but she asserts that she was merely saving him from capture as a means of apologizing for stealing his identity. She looks up at Conan and Saguru who were apparently on the verge of stunning him, and asks who they are. Kaitou Kid refers to them as "a lover who he never wishes to meet." Finally, Kid parts ways with Senma, having attached her to the helicopter with a cord, stating that a thief is unable to steal such an immense treasure. The detectives collectively marvel at the outer walls of the Sunset Mansion fall apart, revealing a completely golden interior. Meanwhile, Ran wonders about the whereabouts of her father, who is seen waking up at a gas station.

File 303 - Genta's Misfortune
The Detective Boys enjoy lunch at school while lightly discussing their eating habits. They notice Genta uncharacteristically leave his meal unfinished and head for the nurse's office, leaving them confused as to the reason. Their teacher, Sumiko, joins their forum and adds that the issue is unrelated to his home-life. She also enlists their help in identifying the root cause of Genta's unusual behavior.
After school, Genta leaves by climbing over a wall, but is immediately caught by his friends who proceed to confront him. He confesses that he is being hunted by an "assassin." The Detective Boys are skeptical at first, even after hearing Genta recount events that suggest he is repeatedly being tailed. Suddenly, a large bolt falls nearby, alerting the group just in time to avoid a massive building-sign from crushing them. While Ayumi and Mitsuhiko label the incident as another coincidence, Conan disagrees. After examining the support cable, he determines it had been deliberately cut. Additionally, Haibara notes that Genta had often stood in this exact spot after school to watch Kamen Yaiba play on the store televisions. Such factors suggest Genta's life is indeed in danger. Meanwhile, a silhouette watches them from the gathering crowd.
The Detective Boys go to a burger restaurant where Genta says he believes the assassin is the serial purse-snatcher who remains at-large. Genta had seen the man sometime earlier, before he was a wanted burglar, but had forgotten where he met him. However, Genta did remember that a blond-haired man was a fellow witness of the thief's identity—and that he found him at another one of the purse-snatcher's crime scenes five days ago. Although he took the blond-haired man to the police and told them the story, but the witness denied any knowledge about both Genta and the thief. When his friends ask him for details about where he saw the thief, Genta says his memories are hazy as he was drowsy at the time. Still, he recalls the blond-man was sitting beside him, and that the thief held a cigarette in his left hand and wore a T-shirt with a skull and the numbers "202" in digital clock-like numerals. When Conan asks why he did not consult the authorities, Genta replies that he received a phone call threatening to murder his loved ones if he spread word about his predicament. Unexpectedly, Genta points at a customer at the shop, noticing him wearing a similar T-shirt to the thief. The group asks the man about where he purchased the T-shirt, and are directed to a station-side apparel store called "Bones."
Upon arriving at the store, the Detective Boys ask the clerk about the "202" T-shirt. She explains that the store sells a variety of similar designs but does not specifically remember one with the numbers "202."
At an end, the group discuss their findings on the sidewalk. Mitsuhiko wonders how Genta could identify so many facets about the thief if he was so drowsy. Genta replies that he was staring at him from across the room. Haibara questions how Genta could continually observe a stranger without incurring outrage. Hearing his friends' discussion, Conan has an epiphany, having solved the mystery.
File 304 - Genta's Trap
Conan says Genta saw the thief in an eyewear store. The thief did not react to Genta's staring because he had given his glasses to the optometrist for inspection, thus greatly limiting his sight. Genta objects, saying he has never been to such a shop. Conan then whispers something into Genta’s ear, while a silhouette intently watches the group. Genta continues to assert that his deduction is flawed. causing Conan to sigh in disappointment. Giving up for the day, the group splits off towards their separate ways.
Walking back home, Ayumi and Mitsuhiko talk about the case again, while Genta buys himself some ice cream. He comes to a slight realization after Ayumi notices cream on his cheek. Mitsuhiko also takes his leave as Genta smells more delicious aromas emanating from a French restaurant. He notices France’s three-color flag on the establishment door and his realization becomes clearer but still out of reach. Finally, Ayumi splits off, leaving Genta to walk alone through the streets of town. He looks at his reflection in a store window and has his epiphany.
He rushes to a place located on the sixth floor of a train station and manages to slip into the elevator just in time.
As the Detective Boys celebrate their victory, Haibara tells Conan to be relieved the culprit was not left-handed. When asked why, she tells him that Gin is left-handed.

File 305 - On the Bottom...
Ran, Sonoko, and Conan attend a pottery class. Sonoko wants to make pottery for Makoto, while Ran wants to make some for Shinichi. They meet the workshop's two apprentices, Motoo Mino and Kikuyo Kasama, along with the workshop's owner and Motoo's father-in-law, Muneyuki Mino, who is amazed at Ran and Conan having met the renowned potter Kikuemon (vol. 16). Some time after, Motoo is found strangled to death with a necktie in a closet.
File 306 - Surrounded by Hints
Conan knows who the culprit is, to the point of confronting the culprit when they're all alone, but still has no evidence. He tries to find evidence to prove it was him.
