    Demon Dog Murder Case

    File 734 - Demon Dog

Kogoro, Ran and Conan are watching a horror movie about demon dogs as they dine. They are interrupted by Heiji (who has come with Kazuha without prior notice), who claims that the demon dog does not just exist in movies, because the person that he will be meeting on the next day has had real experiences with it. Heiji elaborates that five years ago, the president of Inubushi Group, Tsunechika Inubushi (“Inubushi” is the romanization of “犬伏”; “犬” means “dog”), died. Being a womanizer in his early days, a total of eight people visited the Inubushis afterwards and claimed that Tsunechika was their father (and therefore had a right to inherit his wealth). Those people all had a photo depicting Tsunechika and a woman (so eight women in total) who they claimed was the mother; since they all insisted that their mothers had passed away, nobody could confirm their stories, and there was substantial doubt about their identities. Nevertheless, Tsunechika’s wife, Satomi, welcomed all of them, and then adopted them. Five years later, when Satomi’s health considerably worsened, the fight for inheritance began, and the main instrument was probably murder. Two of the eight adopted children died under mysterious circumstances, with one (named Keiji) claiming right before his death that he had fallen off the cliff because a dog-like, fire-engulfed monster had been chasing him and making him panic.

This story horrifies both Conan and Ran, and Heiji and Kazuha continue to say that the person that has requested to meet Heiji (after failing to arrange a meeting with Kazuha’s father) is also an adopted child of the Inubushis. However, this person, believing that the two deaths occurred because one of the adopted children was an outsider and wanted to use his “cursed demon dog” to kill the Inubushis off, has given up his inheritance rights, changed his surname back to his mother’s and moved out of the Inubushi household in Gunma.

On the next day, Heiji and Conan head to this person’s apartment; it turns out that his name is “工藤伸壹”, which, like “工藤新一”, is pronounced as “Kudo Shinichi”. The person who opens the door for them is Kudo’s housekeeper, Funae Abukawa (whom Kudo hired because he was suffering from chronic diseases on the waist). Abukawa ushers them to Kudo’s bedroom, opens the door slightly to show them that Kudo is still sleeping, and tells them that they will have to wait. Heiji and Conan are fine with this, so Abukawa leaves and goes grocery-shopping. While she is gone, Heiji tells Conan that Keiji and Shinichi aside, the other six adopted children are called Takako, Saki, Yoshiya, Miyuki, Miwako (美我子, not 美和子, which has the same pronunciation and is Detective Sato’s first name) and Tomoaki (知晃, not 智明, which has the same pronunciation and is Dr. Araide’s first name) respectively; Miwako is the other adopted child that has died.

Presently loud music begins coming out of the bedroom. Heiji and Conan knock on the door to ask Kudo to lower the music, but receive no response. Heiji thus tries to open the door, and finds it difficult because of all the duct tapes (previously not there) that have been stuck on it. When brute force finally allows the two detectives in, they find the window of the room sealed by duct tape as well and Kudo lying in the center of the room, apparently dead. Additionally, they see a charcoal stove inside the room, which makes them suspect that the victim has died of carbon monoxide poisoning. They thus rush to open the window and remove the stove so as to avoid being poisoned as well, and start examining the body only after ensuring that the room is well ventilated.

At this moment Abukawa comes back. She asks what is going on, but as the two detectives are busy, they say nothing other than warning Abukawa against coming into the room. They notice Kudo’s stiffening chin, the presence of livor mortis on Kudo’s back, something strange about the charcoal chunks in the stove and a number of thick books stacked on each other near the window (the books are taken from the bottom of the bookshelf). From these clues, they immediately deduce that Abukawa killed Kudo.

    File 735 - Vengeful Spirit

Abukawa is shocked by their conclusion and says (after surveying Kudo’s bedroom herself) that she thinks it is a suicide. Heiji disagrees, and argues that since Kudo suffered from waist problems, he would have avoided using the thick (and thus heavy) books from the bottom of the bookshelf for making a temporary chair (to reach the window and seal it with duct tape). Abukawa contends that maybe those were Kudo’s favorite books; this prompts Conan and Heiji to tell her about another strange thing. They say that the charcoal chunks are all cold. In the case that Kudo committed suicide, he must have been alive half an hour ago (i.e. when Abukawa showed Heiji and Conan that Kudo was lying on the bed), which would leave less than that for the charcoal chunks to burn. According to the two detectives, the oxygen in the room could not have been exhausted in such a short period (meaning that the burning only produced carbon dioxide and not carbon monoxide), and even if oxygen had been exhausted and burning had halted completely, the charcoal chunks would stay warm for some time.

This deduction unnerves Abukawa, and she asks how she could have gotten out of the room without Heiji or Conan noticing. Heiji replies that she just needed to hide behind the door. When he and Conan entered, they would be focused on ventilating the room and completely ignore what was going on behind them, giving Abukawa a chance to slip out of the room with ease. They further deduce that the degree of stiffness of Kudo’s body implies that he has been dead for about an hour, and that the presence of livor mortis on the back means that Abukawa carried an already-dead Kudo onto the bed to make it seem like he was sleeping. The two detectives then assert that since Abukawa must have used her bare hands to stick the duct tape (duct tape is impossible to handle with gloves on), her fingerprints must be on it; this is a piece of irrefutable evidence.

Abukawa, knowing that Heiji and Conan have exposed all the tricks, shouts that she merely followed the instructions of whom she calls the “real culprit”. Since Heiji and Conan do not believe that such a person exists, Abukawa details that when she arrived at Kudo’s apartment at noon (as she always had done), the telephone was ringing. Since Kudo was nowhere to be found, she picked it up, and was told that Kudo had been locked in his bedroom’s closet. At this moment, Abukawa leads the detectives to the closet in question, and says that after getting rid of the duct tape and opening the door, she spotted a photo of her son on the inner side of the door (this was obviously used to force Abukawa into submission), a dead Kudo, and a charcoal stove beside him. She claims that obeying the commands of the “real culprit”, she took off Kudo’s suit, put sportswear onto him, moved him onto the bed, waited for the visitors to come and made it seem like Kudo had committed suicide using the tricks that Heiji and Conan explained a while ago.

The two detectives are still not entirely convinced, which prompts Abukawa to continue. She says that the “real culprit” even knew that it was her habit to buy everything she needed for dinner en route to the Kudo household. Therefore, the “real culprit” ordered her to leave whatever she had bought (a mackerel) in the fridge and pretend to go shopping upon the arrival of the visitors. Heiji calls the fish shop to confirm, and is told that not only did Abukawa come at the usual time, she also bargained for a while. Since bargaining would be very strange if Abukawa was planning to kill Kudo, Heiji and Conan change their attitudes to some extent and start accepting the possibility that there might be a person behind it all.

The police arrive at this moment. Abukawa repeats everything that has happened to them, and additionally mentions that the “real culprit” used a voice changer during the call, and that when she asked who he (or she) was the “real culprit” mumbled “vengeful spirit” and hung up. After hearing her narration, Megure tells Abukawa that the police cannot declare her to be innocent yet, and Takagi inquires whether anything has been stolen. Abukawa says that the only thing she noticed is that the pearl decorating Kudo’s tie clip was missing. The pearl is later found in Kudo’s mouth; uponing seeing it, Conan shouts that the police should investigate the tie clip. According to him, if there is saliva on the clip, it means that before Kudo’s death, he removed the pearl from the clip by using his mouth and kept it in it. Heiji agrees, and conjectures that the pearl is a dying message.
