Vodka (ウォッカ ,Wokka) is a character in the manga and anime franchise Detective Conan. He is Gin's secretary and assistant. Like Gin, he was first introduced under the name of Kaspar in the English manga, but then was later renamed to Vodka.

Background

Vodka is a member of the Black Organization who is often seen by Gin's side. His official position is Gin's secretary, so he handles most of the research and information for the duo, such as setting up meetings (309-311), and relaying information to other members (54, 345). Vodka is often seen using some transport.

Personality

Vodka makes a phone call to Itakura, but instead of him, Agasa and Conan are in Itakura's cottage.

While just as ruthless a killer as his partner Gin, Vodka is more easy-going and trusting, thus more susceptible to traps Conan sets to apprehend the Organization. He also tends to not perform well under duress without guidance from Gin or other characters, exemplified in Sherry's Return when, distracted by Gin being sedated, fails to notice and stop Shiho from escaping before it is too late. He speaks and acts like a typical mafia or Yakuza type gangster. While his astuteness is largely overshadowed by Gin, at some point Vodka notices suspicious things and unlike Gin occasionally notices things that prove dangerous to Conan. When Haibara was trapped by Pisco in wine storage room, she was trying to extract all the data about the APTX 4869 from laptop and tell Conan about it, but it was too late because Gin and Vodka arrived in the room. Her half-drunken left-behind bottle baijiu (Haibara drinked it to transform into her real form, so she could become able to climb through chimney and succesfully escape from the room) and unfold laptop were noticed by Vodka. On the bullet train's dining car, Vodka noticed a piece of gum with tracker in it that Conan planted in the armrest cigarette disposal where Gin and Vodka were sitting; however, Vodka then confirmed it was just a piece of gum. In another example, Vodka heard the click of Agasa turning on the lights in the background while Conan was on the phone with him impersonating the Organization contact Itakura with his voice changing bowtie. Conan alleviates Vodka's suspicion by telling him it was just the wind.
In the original Japanese versions, he refers to Gin as "aniki", which literally means "big brother" and is used by yakuza-types to respectfully refer to their bosses but it is also a quasi-affectionate term within a tight social circle as well.

Plot overview

Vodka was the first Black Organization member introduced to the series.

Relationships analysis

Black Organization

Gin

Vodka is a subordinate of Gin's and they frequently work together as a team, or are seen communicating with one another by phone. Vodka shows Gin absolute respect, using honorifics while speaking with Gin rather than just simply using his codename. Gin in turn values Vodka for his obedience. Gin views and treats Vodka as an "inexperienced little brother".

Tequila

Vodka and Tequila are approximately equally ranked and both are Gin's subordinates.

Sherry

Vodka has met Shiho Miyano and they are acquaintances.

Vermouth

Throughout the series Vodka didn't show any negative emotion to Vermouth unlike the other members such as Chianti and Korn. Vodka and Vermouth were seen along on missions sometimes, but they didn't pay attention to each others. She does tease Vodka about his lack of literary knowledge when he fails to understand how Haido Park could be a place most suited for hunting.

Character popularity

eBookJapan held a character popularity poll from April 12, 2011 to May 12, 2011 in which readers of Detective Conan (international included) could vote for their favorite character. Vodka placed 25th in the poll with 10 votes out of the 5,883 that were cast.

Name origin

Vodka's English name, Kaspar, is the name of one of the three Magi in Christian tradition. Gin's English name, Melchior, is also one of the Magi. The third name is Balthazar.

Trivia

• Vodka was actually the first Black Organization member to appear and speak. In the anime during the first episode, he rushed towards the roller coaster yelling, "Move it! Move it! We were here first!". His bulky body blocked Gin from view for a few seconds, who was walking right behind Vodka. Gin remained silent as they boarded the roller coaster and only uttered his first words after the murder took place.
• Vodka has never been seen taking off his hat or sunglasses. His eyes were shown only during episode 345.
