Head-to-Head Match with the Black Organization: A Dual Mystery on a Full Moon Night (黒の組織と真っ向勝負満月の夜の二元ミステリー Kuro no Soshiki to Makkō Shōbu Mangetsu no Yoru no Nigen Misuterī), known as The Confrontation with the Black Organization Night of the Full Moon Dual Mystery in Studio Nano's English release, is the 345th episode of the Detective Conan anime.
It adapts the Halloween Party Case(ch 429-434) in volume 42 of the Detective Conan manga and it was first aired in January 5, 2004. The English-dubbed version of the episode was released on August 21, 2025, as part of the Detective Conan Episode Selections, Conan vs. The Black Organization.
It is the first two-and-a-half-hour special to be aired, split in five thirty-minute segments. It makes use of quality animation from experienced animators, showing the potential of digital animation in the early days of the series. It was storyboarded by Yasuichiro Yamamoto and Chika Ichimaru, and animated by Keiko Sasaki, Rei Masunaga, Atsushi Aono, Akiko Kawashima and Katsunori Enomoto.
It is one of the most important episodes of the series, being the culmination of the Vermouth storyline. It is regarded by many fans as one of the best episodes of the series, due to its complex plot surrounding Conan's plan to take down Vermouth and for the major revelations that will be important later on in the series.[2]
Taking place at a mysterious off-season halloween party on a pirate ship in Tokyo Bay where the event organizer is killed, it shows a confrontation between Conan and Vermouth, the latter knowing Conan's real identity as Shinichi Kudo and planning for him to arrive at the event so the Black Organization can corner him. However, Conan has prepared a cunning plan to take down Vermouth, as she is also targeting Ai Haibara, the runaway scientist from the Organization. The case's conclusion results with Conan's discovery of the Boss's cellphone number.

Situation
Kogoro receives a letter containing an invitation to an off-season Halloween party that will happen on the following day, and a mildly sarcastic letter from someone named Vermouth in Latin. Later that day, while Sonoko is trying out makeups on Kogoro so he is ready to join the party and show that Vermouth has underestimated his deductive skills, Ran calls Agasa to ask him if he knows anyone named Vermouth, to which he denies. In addition, Ran also asks him if Shinichi received a similar letter to Kogoro, with Conan hearing the call nearby and holding that same invitation. He asks Agasa to not say anything to Ran. Though the letter Conan received is for him, the letter was sent to the Kudo residence, meaning that the party could potentially be a trap to lure Shinichi Kudo out and silence him. Conan then receives a message texting “OK” from someone that makes him smile, implying that he is ready to confront Vermouth.
Meanwhile, Gin and Vodka are discussing that off-season Halloween party as Vodka was ordered by the Organization to investigate Vermouth's whereabouts, with Gin being extremely annoyed and ordering Vodka to kill her regardless of someone protecting her if she is acting on her own again.
That night, Conan is seen at his residence, seeing that the readings of the electricity, water, and gas meters have all increased suddenly ever since he received the invitation, and he decides to go in the house, only to hear a gun being cocked in the dark before the scene moves on to the next day.
That day, a sickened Haibara wakes up and notices that she is once again left alone out of Conan's plan for his confrontation with Vermouth.
Kogoro and Sonoko are on a taxi to the location of the party and happen to know that their driver is also a guest of the party. In the reception desk outside of the Halloween cruise, Kogoro is surprised to learn that the crews in charge of the registration procedure have never seen that sarcastic letter. The surprise escalates as we hear the female receptionist asking if the Invisible Man is Shinichi, to which he confirms but tells the girl to keep silent about his participation. At the party, when most people have come, the Haunted Ghost Captain arrives and tells everyone to split based on a specific rule that has been determined earlier by the receptionists. The team Kogoro and Sonoko join includes people disguised as Medusa, Invisible Man, Mummy, Werewolf, and Frankenstein.
Meanwhile in Agasa’s residence, Tomoaki Araide calls Agasa’s desk phone offering to take Haibara to the hospital where a friend of his will be taking care of that night only, to which the left alone Haibara agrees, with Jodie Starling eavesdropping the conversation all along.
After Sonoko’s group gathered enough, she realizes that Frankenstein, Werewolf, and the Mummy have gone somewhere, with the two sooners are seen in the restroom. However, the Werewolf acts somewhat weirder than usual. The lights are off as the Captain starts the game intended from the beginning: Looking for the human who has been sneaking in the monsters and eating him as the trophy (no, we aren’t gonna eat him, right?).
Meanwhile, Araide is in his car to pick up Haibara when the road (which is later revealed to be deliberately laid out as the person blocking the way is seen contacting someone, signifying that Araide is the target) is jammed because some tools from the person’s truck have fallen, forcing Araide to wait as coincidentally, the alternative route has been blocked by a huge truck.
Back to the human tracing game, it appears that the Haunted Ghost Captain has been killed with a crossbow bolt hitting a card of a team member Kogoro and Sonoko as there are blood drops after everyone sees the hanged body of the Captain and thought it was for joking purpose.
Jodie arrives at the Agasa’s residence and tells Haibara that Araide has been stuck in a traffic jam and has asked her to take the girl into the hospital for him. The scene where Jodie led Haibara into the car is witnessed by Araide, making him wonder why she is there.
Returning to the scene of the murder, Kogoro asks for a camera that can take pictures immediately for investigation purposes before he opens the mask of the captain and learns that the person is Senzo Fukura, also famous for the “Friday the Thirteen” series outside of the The Haunted Ship. The mask also has a microphone that is connected directly to the nearby speaker system.
Kogoro directs his suspicion toward the receptionists, but the suspicion cool down as:
- Kogoro remembered that all the guests were hearing the riddle given by The Captain, who stopped it midway, so they couldn’t shoot an arrow without being noticed. But there were some guests who were in another place to have a view of the sea, so they could still be potential suspects.
- Kogoro also assumes that they could have made extra tarot cards so that they can frame one of the guests, but the cards were made by the Captain himself and there were no spare ones as well.
Medusa suggests that the culprit must have been one of the people in the group. Kogoro decides to call Ran that he will be home late due to the case, but is unable to contact her. He then has everyone in the group hold out their tarot card, but the mummy is unable to for some reason.
In an attempt to prove his innocence, the mummy reveals that he and other mummies are the crew members of the film that were ordered by The Captain to sneak in the monsters and choose the best candidates. The mummies were also told to only consume a specific kind of food/drink, and to not communicate, until the victim was found dead as they will have to join the interrogation.
At the moment, the Invisible Man also tries to investigate the scene on his own, doing things of a detective that are very familiar to us. He happens to discover a rooster above the ship.
The mummy (one that is a suspect) also claims that he was absent along with the Werewolf and Frankenstein in the restroom. However, Frankenstein and Werewolf couldn’t confirm his appearance when the mummy got out of the restroom like us. There is much evidence that suggests the mummy with the devil tarot card is the culprit, but is he the one?
Meanwhile, Araide is pursuing Jodie as he did not call her for help when he was stopped due to the traffic jam, unlike what Jodie had told Haibara earlier. So what is the true purpose of Jodie?
