Case 1: Missing Older Brother Case
Situation
A new girl named Ai Haibara transfers into Conan's class. Conan is apathetic, but the rest of the Detective Boys are excited. She acts rather cold and reserved when the Detective Boys try to befriend her, and Genta notices she's looking at Conan suspiciously. She tells them she lives at Beika 2-chōme, 22-banchi, which Conan deduces is right near his house, but can't think of any candidate houses or apartments where a Haibara family has lived.
After school, the detective boys check Genta's locker where their detective group cases are received and Genta finds a request in his shoe. Ayumi tells Haibara to come along with them. The request is from a first grade boy named Toshiya asking the Detective Boys to find his high school aged brother who has been missing for a week. The Detective Boys, along with Toshiya and Haibara, investigate Toshiya's older brother's room. Conan notices the older brother's wallet is still in his drawer which rules out running away from home, and he also discounts kidnapping for extortion because kidnappers would have gone after Toshiya instead. The Detective Boys find the older brother's artwork which are copies of famous paintings. The fidelity is good, but not good enough to be used as forgeries. Conan takes interest in a portrait of Natsume Sōseki which had been in a city exhibition. Toshiya reveals that, before his brother disappeared, a woman in a hat wearing black had an interest in that portrait and approached Toshiya's older brother. Conan panics, thinking that this could be the work of Black Organization. Haibara observes Conan's sudden attitude change.

|
The Detective Boys search around town to ask whether anyone has seen the woman or Toshiya's brother without luck. The detective boys stop at a convenience story for drinks and Conan notices that a man wearing a black jacket and hat used a ¥1000 bill to pay for ¥330 cigarettes. Conan thinks that the transaction probably wasn't for change because the man could have also bought the same cigarettes at a vending machine outside faster. Conan grabs the bill from the startled cashier and notices it has no watermark; it's a counterfeit ¥1000.
Conan and the detective boys start following the man in black. The portrait on ¥1000 bills is Natsume Sōseki, so Conan explains that the man's counterfeit may have to do with Toshiya's brother's disappearance. In a fit of oblivious deductive monologue, Conan starts talking about the men in black shrinking his body in front of the detective boys. Conan cuts himself off quickly and says it was a joke, but Haibara took notice anyway. Conan decides to plant a tracker on the man in black. Conan tells the man he dropped a ¥1000 bill which he snatches from Conan without realizing a button transmitter was stuck to the bill. To keep them from danger, Conan ditches the detective boys by telling them he has something to do and they should look for Toshiya's brother tomorrow. Ai watches as Conan runs away...
Now alone, Conan tracks the bill to a vender where the man in black bought a ¥110 can of iced coffee. A janitor testifies that the man used a ¥500 coin to buy a train ticket which left him with at least 3 coins of change. Looking at the ticket prices, Conan deduces the man went to Daitoma station. Once there, Conan begins to question a local broker who may have rented a space big enough to print fake money. The broker then asks Conan if he is with the kids outside; the detective boys, Toshiya, and Haibara have been following Conan. Haibara was the one who predicted Conan might try to continue investigating alone and suggested they follow. Toshiya then describes a quick phone call his missing brother made; he said something about being with people like Sōseki. The broker tells the kids he rented a location by the local police post to a newspaper printing company two years ago and they recently got a new printer. The broker says the lady in charge favors wide brimmed hats. With this, Conan realizes the meaning of the hint that Toshiya's older brother said over the phone.

Case 2: Murdered Professor Case
Situation
Haibara explains her story about the drug, her sister's death and her escape. She reveals that she accidentally sent a floppy disk containing data on the Black Organization to her older sister... which is now in the possession of her sister's professor, Masami Hirota. They track down Hirota through the university and Agasa posed as a friend of Haibara's sister Akemi Miyano, and Hirota agrees to give them the disk, but first after he has some other visitors.
Agasa takes Conan and Haibara to Hirota's home so they can get the disk, only to realize that Hirota has been murdered. Discovering the voice messages, they discovered the suspects are Hirota's three students who visited that day and the Black Organization. However, they quickly rule out the Black Organization involvement because the crime was too messy to be Black Organization's style.

Trivia
- Genta showed that he can be a gentleman when he pulled out the chair for Haibara to sit in it, however she chose the seat beside Conan's instead.
- Although Conan has been on several cases with the Detective Boys, this is really the very first time that Haibara and the Detective Boys hear Conan introduce himself as "Conan Edogawa, just a Detective," normally it is "Conan Edogawa, a Detective," but they never heard that yet either.
- This is the case, where Haibara shoots a gun, and aims it exceedingly well, without being affected by the nasty recoil at all.
- Although Haibara may be trying to keep a distance from the 'real' children at this point, the first sign that Shiho Miyano is not used to the name Ai Haibara yet, is she gave no reaction at all, when the Detective Boys repeatedly called out to her by the name of Haibara after school. They had to literally stop her in her tracks.
- They may have thought it may be her stuck up or snobbish or nervous personality, but it may have been forgetting her alias. Shinichi did the same, shortly after he became Conan.
- This episode marks the first visual proof that Conan and his classmates are in Class 1-B, which is clearly stated on Genta's Shoe locker, which advertises the Detective Boys on the door.
- Haibara can recognize a painting of Picasso's even though it was a fake, she recognized the artwork to belong to Picasso.
- Mitsuhiko seemed to recognize the painting to be Picasso's the Crying Woman.
- Conan is familiar with the artwork of Picasso, Gogh, Gauguin, and Monet, and to realize the difference between these copies and the originals.
- This is the first episode that features a case of counterfeiters or a counterfeiting ring, as in money, and not artwork.
- This is the first, if not the only case, where Conan slips up, and brings up 'being shrunk by men in black, who used drugs,' in front of the Detective Boys. Conan quickly caught himself, when Ayumi asked, "Shrunk your body," and added, "just wanted to play around with your heads."
- Natsume Sōseki's portrait is on the 1,000 yen bill.
- Fukusawa Yukichi's portrait is on the 10,000 yen bill.
- Although Ayumi came close to being shot in The Detective Boys' Disaster Case, it was a filler unlike this episode, where Ayumi came very close to being shot. In fact, so did Genta, Mitsuhiko, Haibara, and Conan, although Conan saved her, and Haibara saved them all.
- This case marks the first mention of Apotoxin 4869, Sherry, and that she clearly knows who Conan Edogawa is; Shinichi Kudo, which explains her staring at him all day.
- This episode that shows that Ai is into fashion magazines, such as when she arrived at Agasa's estate, the first thing that she did after placing down her backpack, was to pick up a fashion magazine, and begin looking at it.
- Professor Agasa and Ai Haibara chose her name based on female private detectives: (Ai) from V. I. Warshawski and (Haibara) from Cordelia Gray.
- Akemi Miyano took the name of one of her professors, "Masami Hirota" as her alias.
- Although Megure was about to get onto Haibara for shooting the gun, no one: not Megure or Shiratori got onto Conan for shooting a gun in The Fourteenth Target, when he shot Ran's leg to save her life, although that was not Canon, and even Shiratori thinks that he was merely lucky that he did not do more damage than hurting her leg.
- In this case, Conan told Ran that he will stay over at Agasa's house tonight, since he made a fun game for them to play together, as an excuse to not tell Ran about the Bigger case involving the Black Organization. However, he usually uses staying overnight at Agasa's place when he is working on a big case, and esp. if it involves the Black Organization. This is probably one of his first times though. However, he may use that on other cases as well.
- This case is the first time that Inspector Sango Yokomizo meets Professor Hiroshi Agasa and Ai Haibara.
- Professor Agasa told Sango Yokomizo that Haibara, and even Conan is a distant relative of his, even though Sango knows that Conan has been staying with the Mouris.
- Vodka called Masami Hirota claiming to be from Black X Insurance in order to check, and see if he is home.
- Although Shogi is mentioned as Japanese Chess, this episode included characters who actually play Chess.
- This is the second case that Inspector Sango Yokomizo sees Conan working a case that Kogoro Mouri is not working on. The first case was The Triplet's Country Home Murder Case with a sleeping Sonoko.
- This is the second time that Conan uses Agasa to lip sync and to be his mouthpiece for him. The first time was Big Monster Gomera Murder Case.
- Whether it was the Night Baron Computer Virus that erased the floppy, as well as everything on Agasa's hard drive, or not, ... In Night Baron Murder Case, The culprit claimed the Night Baron Computer Virus never existed. Although Haibara did say it was the Night Baron Virus.
- This is the episode that Conan found out the Black Organization have went into his house to investigate his death, and the second time, Sherry noticed all of his childhood clothes have disapeared since the last time they were there.
- Interesting Note: Apparently, Professor Agasa, the next door neighbor, did not know what happened twice next door, such as the organization breaking into his house to check up on his death.
- The first time that the organization searched his house, there was dust everywhere, and no sign of anyone living there, so it was probably some time since Gin and Vodka tried to kill Shinichi.
- Haibara mentioned the second time was month after the first time, and this time the childhood clothes have disappeared, although the house was still dusty, and there did not seem to be any change, so this was probably before Ran began cleaning his house in The Memories of First Love Case, when Agasa gave her the spare key, so she can periodically clean it.
- Gin and Vodka have began searching for Sherry, who escaped from the organization.
- This is the first time that Sango Yokomizo sees the Lip Synching Agasa solve the case of the locked room murder.
- This is the second time that Conan uses Agasa to lip sync and to be his mouthpiece for him. The first time was Big Monster Gomera Murder Case.
- Although Agasa probably told Ai of all of the gadgets that he made for Conan, she has only seen him use these gadgets in this episode: Voice-Changing Bowtie, Power-Enhancing Kick Shoes, and Earring Cellphone in this episode, although Conan has mentioned his Stun-Gun Wristwatch in front of her.
- This is the first time that she sees Conan perform the Lip Synching Agasa, using Agasa as his mouthpiece to solve a case, however this time, Agasa kept looking back and talking to Conan, while Conan is trying to hide behind him.
- Professor Agasa forgot for a second and actually called Conan "Shinichi" in front of Inspector Sango Yokomizo.
- This is the case that Conan found out that Haibara is the sister to Masami Hirota, whose real name is Akemi Miyano.
- This is the episode that Haibara states that the organization knows her youthful face, in short, they know what she looked like when she really was a 7-8 year old little girl.
