Plot overview
Sato's Father Case (Manga: 267-269, Anime: 205-206)
Sato is mentioned by Conan, his daughter etc. in this case. From their words we can reconstruct the following: it was 18 years ago and a day with heavy rain. Sato had just caught a bank robber (Shuji Kano, who happened to be a friend of his and one of Sato's baseball teammates in high school) and was escorting him to the police station. Kano, believing that there was no hope for him in life, tried to commit suicide by running into a trunk; he was saved by Sato, but Sato himself was hit snd severely injured instead. As Kano ran away, Sato cried "surrender yourself, surrender yourself" (自首しろ, "jishu shiro") while extending his hand in Kano's direction. The passersby were not able to hear Sato clearly and thought that he was saying "Shuushirou" (シュウシロウ or 愁思郎; neither of these is meaningful), which is why the case came to be known as the "case of Shuushirou" (愁思郎事件). Sato later died on the ambulance, in the company of his wife and daughter. His death affected them deeply. Sato was posthumously promoted to the rank of Senior Superintendent, and Kano was at large for another 18 years (partially because only Sato knew all the important details of the case) until Conan gets involved in the case and solves it.

Trivia
- Sato's given name, "正義", means "justice" both in Japanese and in traditional Chinese. While used in that sense and not as a Japanese male given name, "正義" is pronounced as "seigi".
