Samonji's full name is Samonji Matsuda (松田左文字 Matsuda Samonji). In the Funimation Dub, the character's name is Detective Simon. The murder mystery book series was originally written by author Nintaro Shinmei. Nintaro had written around 40 novels and ended the last one ten years ago with Samonji and a criminal falling into a fire, stating that Samonji was dead. In the current year he tried to write a new novel with a code embedded in it, but he passed away before completing it. The novel as well as the series was continued by his daughter, Kaori Shinmei. The additions to her fathers novel were three assistants based on Kogoro, Ran, and Conan respectively. Later on Conan is seen purchasing the 44th novel in the series with Kaori's name on it.
The original novel series has received multiple television follow-ups, with Samonji's role being performed by the actor Osamu Kenzaki. The identity of the murderer changes each time to maintain viewer interest. A new television series based on the most recent books has already started up. Both Ran and Shinichi enjoy the series.
The author of the series mysteriously disappears and his daughter comes to Kogoro to find him. Conan and company go to Daigakukan publishers (a parody of Shogakukan) to investigate the recent restart of the novel series, which is being sent in by fax. After a phone call from Heiji, Conan manages to discover the secret and everyone races to the Haido Hotel to discover that the author had passed away. He had created a code in his novel because he wanted an intelligent reader to come find him and announce they had solved it, before he died. His daughter, Kaori Shinmei, continued the series by adding three assistants to the second half of the novel based on Conan, Ran, and Kogoro.
Kogoro is invited to the celebration of a friend of Yoko Okino getting engaged. One of Yoko's old idol group mates is pretending to get to engaged to Osamu Kenzaki and they are celebrating by watching Detective Samonji, in which he plays the star of the show.
Detective Samonji series novel 44 is released and Conan buys it planning to finish it all in one night. When he arrives home he is met by Heiji and Kazuha and they end up wrapped up in a case. Heiji solves the case using the title of the Detective Samonji novel.
The dying message left by the victim in this case was drops of blood on top of a novel by Kaori Shinmei. The book is titled "The Murderer from Hell".
The Detective Boys go to a book store where Conan tries to buy the newest Kaori Shinmei novel, titled "Identifying a Severed Head in the Middle of the Night". However Eisuke picks up the book first.
The Detective Boys mention that Kaori Shinmei's new Detective Samonji drama "Stress Murder Case" will air on Nichiuri Tv that afternoon. Due to Kogoro and Agasa being busy, Conan attempts to call Ran to get her to record it. However she has gone to clean the Kudo home not knowing that Okiya is living there.
During the case, a remote is attached to a fan and changes the channel a few times. The tv briefly shows a Detective Samonji drama among a few other shows.
Conan, Ran, Sonoko, and Masumi attend the live taping of the "Which Sweets Show", in which Osamu Kenzaki is the announcer. When a case occurs Massumi approaches the stage and interacts with Osamu. When Conan mentions that Osamu is the actor playing Detective Samonji, Masumi responds "oh, that funny detective", which confuses him.
Non-canon plot overview
Due to a case, Conan misses out on buying the latest Detective Samonji novel.
- Samonji share some similarities with Sherlock Holmes. They are both detectives whose writer 'killed' them along their enemy with the intention of being done writing stories about them, but was later brought back.
