The series is known as Detective Conan, formerly known as Case Closed, in English-speaking countries of North America, Europe and Oceania.
From 2024 to 2026, the series was originally renamed as Case Closed, due to unspecified concerns of copyright conflict of the name Detective Conan.[1] In 2025, the Case Closed title was dropped specifically for the anime and movies, and it's planned to be discontinued in the manga with its re-release in 2027.
Currently, the English translation of the manga is done by Viz Media, and the English dubbing is done by studios Bang Zoom! Entertainment for the movies and Studio Nano for the anime series.
Manga
Publishing History

Viz Media licensed the manga series under the name for English-language publication in North America, and released its first volume on September 7, 2004. It first acquired licensing rights in early 2004 and announced its intention to publish the series on June 1, 2004[2]. It kept the localized names of the characters and setting places from the FUNimation dub, as well as the name of the series[3]. It gave Ai Haibara her own English name, "Anita Hailey", since FUNimation used "Vi Graythorn".
The UK's publication of Victor Gollancz Ltd ended after 15 volumes in November 2007[4]. Viz Media continues to handle the UK's distribution with the American edition and has since republished all 15 volumes under its imprint. In 2014, after Shogakukan Asia, a subsidiary of Shogakukan, Detective Conan's publisher in Japan, started its own release of the manga in English, thus separating the market share for Viz Media[5]. Howeever, the Shogakukan Asia version reuses the translation from Viz Media, as Shogakukan has the ultimate translation rights.
In May 2023, Viz Media introduced a new subscription service that offers the latest Simulpub for many series including "Case Closed". The subscription service is only available in the US, Canada, the UK, Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand. As March 14, 2025, Viz Media has released chapters 1-1140 on the service.[6],[7].
In June 12, 2026, Viz Media announced a manga re-release with the original "Detective Conan" title and with original Japanese character names. It's planned to release as 3-in-1 Omnibus series in February 2, 2027.[8] The pre-orders are currently available.

Anime and Movies
Funimation Entertainment (1st English dub)

Funimation Entertainment licensed the anime series for North American broadcast under the name Case Closed. The character names were also adapted into English ones with some names different between the two. Fifty episodes of the English dubbed series aired on Cartoon Network as part of their Adult Swim programming block on May 24th, 2004 until January 2005 and were discontinued due to low ratings.[9] In Canada, Case Closed premiered on channel YTV, 22 episodes were broadcasted between April 7th, 2006 and September 2nd, 2006.[10][11]. A separate English adaptation of the series by Animax Asia premiered in the Philippines on January 18th, 2006, under the name Detective Conan.[12] Because Animax were unable to obtain further TV broadcast rights, their version comprised 52 episodes.[13] The series continued with reruns until August 7, 2006, when it was removed from the station.[14] Funimation also released DVDs of their dubbed series beginning August 24th, 2004.[15] Initially, the releases were done in single DVDs and future episodes were released in seasonal boxes; as of 2009, they have released 130 episodes dubbed in English.[16] The seasonal boxes were later re-released in redesigned boxes entitled Viridian edition.[17][18] The first six films were released on Region 1 DVD in North America between October 3rd 2006 and February 16th 2010, and sold very well.[19][20]
As a part of its syndication with the Funimation Channel, Colours TV aired Case Closed at the night-time programming block, premiering on June 19th 2006.[21] Till 2012, no more than 130 episodes (episodes 1-123 Japanese version) have been dubbed in English. Detective Conan is later broadcasted in North America on NHK's cable network TV Japan.[22] Though anime didn't get that popular in North America, the manga enjoys high success. The first volume appeared trice in the top ten best sellers, right after its premiere,[23] the same volume has also appeared on the ranking list conducted by Diamond Comic Distributors in August, 2004.[24] Later manga volumes have appeared on the New York Times Manga Best Sellers[25][26] lists at various times. Volume 41 broke the record making it to the top 5 in sales rank during the week ending on January 14th, 2012.[27] The manga continues to be released in North America until today.
S. California's UTB, United Television Broadcasting's free digital television station began to re-broadcast already dubbed Case Closed episodes on August 21st, 2011. The next two-episode block was scheduled for Saturday, August 27th, followed by two more episodes on Sunday, August 28th. The episodes were broadcasted at 6:30 a.m and repeated at 10:30 a.m the same day. A one-episode block also aired at 10:00 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays as well.
As of April 2013, Funimation has renewed the Case Closed license for "future use". Additionally on April 2nd 2013, Funimation announced that seasons 1-5 would be made available digitally through many online vendors (iTunes, Playstation Network and Xbox Live) starting April 16, 2013. Season 1 would be available on April 16th, season 2 and 3 in May, and season 4 and 5 in June. Movie release dates was never announced. There was a hint shown in the description for a possible dubbing of the sixth season, however it has not been confirmed. Each episode costs $0.99.
Online streaming services (English subtitles)
On October 2014 at NY Comic Con's Crunchyroll panel, they announced that "Case Closed" would be added to their roster. Later they began subtitling the Japanese episodes at episode 754. The page for the series uses the Case Closed banner from Funimation. Originally, the episodes were posted on the Saturday of the week after they air in Japan, but they later were posted on Wednesdays. Since May 2017, premium users get access to new episodes within several hours after they air in Japan, while they will be available for free users a week after.[28] Since September 2022, Crunchyroll has removed the option to watch all anime free with ads, leaving only the premium option and 14-day free trial for new users. As of August 24, 2024, they have subtitled up to episode 1133, excluding specials and movies. Crunchyroll later reclaimed the original license of the series from Funimation, and discontinuously since August 2021, streamed the first 123 episodes, all completely remastered.
As of January 2016, English-language Netflix began to stream episodes under the title "Case Closed". The page for the series used the Case Closed banner from Funimation. They obtained the rights to air fifty-two episodes in Japanese with English subtitles, from episode 748-799. The show's maturity rating is listed as TV-14.[29] However, it has been removed for unknown reason.
As of 2025, the streaming service Crackle has rights to episodes 1-82, and all episodes are available with English sub. Episodes 1-28 were added on July 7[30], with 29-82 to be added on August 18[31].
Bang Zoom! Entertainment (2nd English dub)
Since 2019, Bang Zoom! Entertainment provided the English dub for movies, featuring all-new casts. Unlike the Funimation dub, the character names are not localized. Discotek Media release the movies in Blu-ray since 2020. As of 2025, they have dubbed 9 movies (Movie 19-26; Lupin III vs. Detective Conan: The Movie) and 2 TV specials (Episode One: The Great Detective Turned Small, Lupin III vs. Detective Conan).
As February 2023, Netflix has worldwide rights to spin-off series Zero's Tea Time and The Culprit Hanzawa. Both series also come with the English dub by Bang Zoom! Entertainment.
Macias Group (3rd English dub)
From February 2023 to February 2025, Fox Corporation-owned streaming service Tubi streamed English subbed and dubbed episodes of Detective Conan under the title "Case Closed". The dub is done by Macias Group, featuring Bang Zoom's casts for some characters, and all-new casts for the other characters. Initially, only ten episodes were available, but later additions expanded the range of episodes from episode 965 to episode 1014. However, as of February 2025, all episodes have been removed from the service.
Studio Nano (4th English dub)
In June 26, 2025, TMS Entertainment has announced the release of a specially curated episode selection of the anime, coming to Crunchyroll and Netflix. The first selection titled “Conan vs. The Black Organization”, initially consisted of 9 episodes with the theme of Black Organization, with additional 5 episodes released in August 21. It features a new English dub, provided by Studio Nano with a mostly new casts, different from prior dubs. However, two voice casts from the Funimation dub return: Mark Stoddard reprise his role as Megure, while Colleen Clinkenbeard, who played Ran in the Funimation dub, returned as Vermouth. This release also mark the first time the anime was released under the Detective Conan branding instead of Case Closed in the US/Canada.
Games
As of 2025, only two Case Closed video game has been released. The first one is Case Closed: The Mirapolis Investigation, which was released exclusively for the Wii in Japan and Europe. The English version featured the voice casts from the Funimation dub, and has minor changes in script. The second game is Case Closed Runner: Race to the Truth. A free-to-pay, auto-runner video game for iOS and Android that was avaliable until the game shut down on October 31, 2020.

Detective Conan in the United Kingdom
Manga
In the United Kingdom, the manga is imported and distributed under the North American title Case Closed by Viz Media. Volumes are sold through major comic shops and book retailers, such as Forbidden Planet and Simon & Schuster UK. Because it uses the North American localization, the translation retains the changed character names (such as Jimmy Kudo for Shinichi and Rachel Moore for Ran).
Anime
Historically, the Detective Conan anime had a very limited presence on UK television compared to other European countries.
Streaming
- Crunchyroll: The series streams in the UK on Crunchyroll under the title Case Closed (Detective Conan).
- Netflix: Episodes of the anime have also begun arriving on Netflix UK, making the series much more accessible to the British audience.
Movies
For decades, the Detective Conan films were not released theatrically in the UK or Ireland. This completely changed recently thanks to the UK-based distributor Trinity CineAsia, which brought the franchise to the big screen:
- Detective Conan: The Million-Dollar Pentagram (Movie 27) was the first film in the franchise's history to receive a wide theatrical release in the UK, premiering on September 27, 2024.
- Detective Conan: One-eyed Flashback (Movie 28) followed the successful trend, hitting UK cinemas on September 26, 2025.
To appeal to both the local anime fanbase and the large Chinese-speaking audience in the UK, Trinity CineAsia releases the films with original Japanese audio and dual English and Traditional Chinese subtitles. Unlike the English dubs of the past, these releases keep the original Japanese names (Shinichi, Ran, Kogoro, etc.).

Trivia
- "Case Closed" was later used as the catchphrase for Masumi Sera (whether it's intended as a reference or coincidental is unspecified), who is British-Japanese. She first appeared in 2011, years after the English franchise started using the name.
