File 051 - The Truth Under the Mask
Trapped between two agents in black, Conan appears to have no way out until the door of the hotel room in the hallway opens, blocking the view of the woman in black. A mother leaves her little boy in their room while she goes out, but when the boy closes the door, he finds Conan has ducked into the room to hide. Conan convinces the boy he's not a thief, then borrows the room phone and a package of gum.

Room service arrives at room 301—the woman protests they didn't ask for anything, but the masked man in black orders them to bring it in and then throws the bellhop out. As the man goes to shut the door, he finds gum in the keyhole that prevents it from automatically locking. Amused, he proposes a toast to their extra guest, who is not hiding beneath the cart, but inside the room's closet. Facing down a gun, Conan tries to use his tranquilizer watch, only to be informed that the masked man already used the needle on him earlier, and high school detective Shinichi Kudo will regret underestimating them.

<spoiler>
The masked man fires his gun, but rather than a bullet, a suction dart hits Conan in the forehead. All three adults burst out laughing, and the masked man reveals himself to be Shinichi's father, Yusaku. The woman in black and the masked contact turn out to be Yukiko and Agasa in sophisticated disguises. Conan is unamused, but Yusaku explains that the plot was meant as a test of Shinichi's detective skills, which Shinichi "passed" according to Yusaku's calculations, even down to getting himself shot in the end. Yusaku is only surprised that Conan didn't recognize that Yusaku was impersonating the Night Baron, a character from his own detective novels, but Conan complains he had other things to worry about, like dying.

Immediately, Yusaku and Yukiko offer Conan the chance to leave the country with them, and not worry about the dangers or risk his life again. Their little show was to drive home how dangerous chasing the men in black will be. Yusaku even offers to use his contacts at Interpol to chase the men and get the drug so Conan can return to being Shinichi. Conan utterly refuses, determined that this is his case to solve, and privately not wanting to leave Ran behind in Japan. Yukiko protests, but Yusaku seems to understand (both the determination and knowing Shinichi's feelings for Ran). In the end, "Fumiyo Edogawa" returns to ask the Mouris to continue taking care of Conan, with a large check for expenses obtaining Kogoro's cooperation, and flattering Ran with how much Conan loves staying with her.

On an airplane out of Narita Airport, Yusaku admits that the visit was worth leaving his editors hanging without a finished manuscript. Yukiko worries about Shinichi, but Yusaku assures her that Conan will come begging for help sooner or later. They plan to do more traveling, but suddenly a horde of editors descend on Yusaku and demand their promised manuscripts, preventing them from going anywhere. Conan alerted the editors as revenge against his parents for their trick.

File 052 - The Three Visitors
The Moris are at a client's home. While Conan and Ran wait in the spacious garden, Kogoro speaks with Denjiro Maru in the main house. Maru had hired Kogoro to tail his wife and investigate suspicions of infidelity; Kogoro had succeeded in photographing the woman with her lover and is now showing the pictures to his client. Meanwhile, Conan grows impatient in the garden and notices a visitor entering the house.

When the doorbell rings, Mr. Maru has to answer it himself, as he has given the entire staff the day off and his wife is currently taking a piano lesson. He then escorts the guest to the garden house. Some time passes before the phone next to Kogoro suddenly rings; Mr. Maru has not yet returned. Kogoro, Ran, and Conan look around the hallway but find no one. Suddenly, Conan hears a loud noise coming from the garden house—it sounds like a blow.

File 053 - Alibis of the Three
More time elapses, and the phone rings again. However, it stops after three rings, only to start ringing again a few seconds later. Finally, Kogoro loses patience and heads to the garden house; there, he encounters the household staff, who know nothing about the visitor. Ineko, Denjiro's wife, also appears; Kogoro's confused remarks reveal to her that he is a detective and is aware of her secret. Mrs. Maru sends the staff to look for her husband while trying to persuade Kogoro to keep quiet about her affair. Suddenly, they hear the housekeeper scream and rush to the garden house, where they discover Mr. Maru's body, pierced by a samurai sword. The police arrive shortly thereafter. Inspector Megure has already determined that Mr. Maru struggled with his killer, which explains the complete disarray in the room. Since the victim practiced kendo in his spare time, the perpetrator must also be a skilled swordsman. Conan is the only one who noticed Mr. Maru entering the neighboring building accompanied by another person. In addition to the meeting with Kogoro, Mr. Maru’s schedule for the day lists three other commitments: appointments with his family doctor Ikuya Hatano, the sculptor Makoto Akutsu, and Yuji Suwa. All three are quickly brought to the crime scene, as they were in the vicinity. Upon observing Mr. Suwa’s hands, Conan immediately realizes that he, too, practices kendo.

File 054 - Answering Machine Mystery
File 053 - Alibis of the Three
Conan correctly deduces that Yuji Suwa practices Kendo. Suwa has the characteristic calluses between his thumb and index finger — marks often found on swordsmen, caused by repeatedly sheathing a sword. Suwa confirms Conan’s suspicion to Inspector Megure, explaining that the victim, Mr. Maru, was a former student at his dojo. He states that he had come that day to repay money he had borrowed from Maru.

File 055 - Words on the Chest
Kogoro informs the three individuals present that Mr. Maru was murdered by an unknown visitor in the garden pavilion around three o'clock. Given the disarray at the crime scene and the fact that Mr. Maru — despite his rank in Kendo — was overpowered, Kogoro concludes that Suwa must be the culprit. However, Ran points out that the victim is holding his sword with an incorrect grip — a detail confirmed by a photograph of Mr. Maru. This convinces the investigators that the murderer placed the sword in the victim's hands only after the crime had taken place. The chaotic state of the room also strikes Conan as suspicious; Inspector Megure likewise comes to the conclusion that the perpetrator must have ransacked the room on purpose.

Mysterious Brothers Case
The three suspects then introduce themselves: Yuji Suwa had come to repay a loan, while the sculptor Makoto Akutsu also owed money to Mr. Maru but, unable to pay the full amount, had intended to ask for an extension. Kogoro is also questioned; in a moment of carelessness, he reveals that he had been tailing Ineko Maru and discovered that she was having an affair. Ikuya Hatano, Mr. Maru’s personal physician, had arrived for a routine weekly check-up. Conan notices an unusual scent on Hatano—the same one he had previously detected on Mrs. Maru. He sets a trap for the doctor, which leads Mrs. Maru to admit that she is having an affair with Mr. Hatano. Consequently, the two had provided each other with an alibi.

Conan concludes that none of the suspects has a convincing alibi. As the conversation continues, it emerges that each of the three men had left a message on the answering machine. While Mr. Suwa announced that he would arrive at the meeting place early, and Mr. Hatano reconfirmed his appointment, the investigators notice that Mr. Akutsu’s message is missing. Akutsu explains this by revealing the content of his message: in a fit of rage, he had threatened to kill Mr. Maru if he dared to sell a valuable statue that belonged to Akutsu. The statue sits unharmed atop a heavily scratched chest of drawers — where Conan notices something peculiar.

File 054 - Answering Machine Mystery
Makoto Akutsu is relieved to see that his valuable statue is undamaged. Conan notices that it's practically the only object in the room showing no signs of a struggle. Kogoro concludes that Mr. Akutsu must be the culprit, reasoning that he couldn't have brought himself to destroy his own statue. Inspector Megure finds this theory plausible, especially since the message from Mr. Akutsu is not on the answering machine as claimed.

Conan recalls that the phone rang three times while they were waiting. The first ring was long, while the second and third were very short. He points out this detail again, prompting the investigators to listen to the answering machine messages once more — yet they still find no message from Mr. Akutsu. Conan reviews the facts, notices that one of the messages is very strange, and suspects that the caller is the culprit.

Inspector Megure asks Mrs. Maru if her husband had left anything valuable at the scene. She confirms that the safe key is kept in the chest of drawers but notes that it is suddenly in a different drawer. Conan examines the chest of drawers again and sees that the large cut marks end abruptly. Having already been reprimanded by the police, he asks the staff for a Polaroid camera. Conan takes a photo of the chest of drawers and is subsequently sent away from the scene by Kogoro. He then cuts the individual drawers out of the photo and attempts to piece them together correctly.

Conan succeeds in deciphering Mr. Maru's final message and solving the case. He puts Kogoro into a deep sleep using his stun-gun wristwatch and begins explaining the case before the suspects can even leave the crime scene.

File 055 - Words on the Chest
<spoiler>
Conan begins to solve the case while posing as "Sleeping Kogoro". He announces that Yuji Suwa is actually the murderer of Denjiro Maru. Although Suwa is a skilled swordsman, he deliberately trashed the room and clumsily placed the sword in the victim's hand to create the impression that the perpetrator was an amateur. He intentionally left Mr. Akutsu's sculpture undamaged to cast suspicion on him. The murderer had learned of the dispute between Mr. Akutsu and the victim through a message on the answering machine — a message recorded while Suwa was already in the midst of his confrontation with Mr. Maru.

Suwa remains unconvinced by Kogoro's conclusion, arguing that Mr. Akutsu could also have had the opportunity to listen to the message and subsequently delete it. Conan counters that Suwa incriminated himself with that very message, in which he announced his early arrival; after all, no one who knew the person they intended to visit was not at home would show up earlier than planned. Thus, Suwa clearly knew that Mr. Maru was actually at home.

Suwa continues to deny the crime and demands proof. Conan provides it by explaining that the murderer deliberately trashed the room to distract from the actual evidence. He points to the chest of drawers and asks Inspector Megure to return the drawers to their original positions. Inspector Megure realizes that the arrangement of the drawers spells out the character for "Suwa". Conan explains that Mr. Maru left this dying message by seizing the moment when Suwa was distracted by the answering machine. Suwa eventually confesses to the crime; he explains that although he had settled his debts with Mr. Maru, the latter had kept a family heirloom — a sword — as collateral and sold it without his consent. During the ensuing confrontation, Suwa lost his temper and attacked the victim; he demonstrates the attack, missing the sleeping Kogoro by mere millimeters. Suwa is subsequently arrested.
</spoiler>
Kogoro wakes up, notices a small, bleeding wound, and screams at the top of his lungs that he is dying.

File 056 - Formation! The Detective Boys
During a break at Teitan Elementary School, Conan, Ayumi, Genta, and Mitsuhiko form the "Detective Boys". They use the school's public address system to offer their services to their classmates. After school, a boy from another class asks for their help in finding his cat, Akira. Although the children initially intend to decline the case, they eventually agree to take it on after being promised rare "Kamen Yaiba" trading cards as a reward.

After a long search, they hear the cat meowing from a house. Akira is covered in blood but uninjured; Conan deduces that the blood did not come from the cat. The Detective Boys then climb over the property's fence and peer through the window from which Akira had emerged. Inside, they discover the body of a man kneeling head-down in front of a bathtub filled with water.

The children call the police from a phone booth outside the house and keep watch until Inspector Megure and his team arrive. However, when the officers ring the doorbell and search the house together, the body has vanished and the bathroom is clean.

File 057 - Mysterious Brothers
The Detective Boys suspect that the homeowner used the time before the police arrived to dispose of the body and clean the bathroom. Consequently, the man allows the police to search the entire house. He retreats to the upper floor and asks that any questions be directed to his younger brother.

The police officers search the whole house. Meanwhile, the younger brother returns from work and is informed of the situation by Inspector Megure. However, the search yields no results. The older brother's room is also searched; he has fallen asleep in front of the television and remained completely unaware of the events.

Next, they investigate whether the body could have been removed from the property via a large tree behind the house. However, the police are unable to reconstruct a plausible scenario. Furthermore, a canal runs behind the property, making it impossible to escape with a body. Consequently, the inspector concludes that the children lied to him.

The Detective Boys, however, do not give up on the case and keep the house under observation late into the night. They notice that the older brother is still asleep in front of the television. Nothing in the room has changed — not even the sleeping man's posture. This gives Conan an idea.

File 058 - Moving Corpse Mystery
Conan realizes he was mistaken about a crucial point. He explains to his friends that he has figured out the culprit's trick. To verify this, he climbs through a window into the house, followed by the Detective Boys; however, he instructs them to wait outside by the phone booth so they can respond to instructions via their transceivers.
<spoiler>
Conan leaves the bathroom and notices the younger brother, Tomofumi Tanaka. He watches as the man places something on the chest of drawers next to the landline phone and walks away; the object turns out to be a mobile phone. Conan continues searching the house and eventually finds the room where the older brother, Kazuyoshi Tanaka, is sitting. He discovers the decisive piece of evidence and solves the case.

Suddenly, Tomofumi Tanaka enters the room; Conan manages to hide just in time, but then Genta shouts loudly into his transceiver. Tomofumi demands that the detective come out of hiding. Instead, Conan begins to explain the solution to the case.

The supposedly missing body is, in fact, Kazuyoshi Tanaka. Conan explains that Tomofumi had noticed the Detective Boys searching the house and immediately tidied up the rooms. The culprit had seated his brother's corpse in the armchair in front of the television and posed as Kazuyoshi when the police arrived. While the police were searching the house, Tomofumi climbed outside via a tree by the canal, removed his disguise, and then returned to the house as the younger brother.

To perfect the illusion, he operated both the VCR and the landline phone using a mobile phone. That is why the culprit answered the phone so quickly — to prevent Kazuyoshi’s recorded voice from playing again. Meanwhile, the Detective Boys call Inspector Megure again to identify the culprit. At first, he does not believe the children, but he changes his mind upon hearing Tanaka’s aggressive admissions.

Tomofumi confesses to the crime and attacks Conan with a club, explaining that his brother had been living off him and blackmailing him. He chases Conan into the kitchen, where the detective finally subdues him using his Power-Enhancing Kick Shoes. Shortly thereafter, the police arrive and arrest Tanaka.
</spoiler>
A few days later, the Detective Boys are waiting for a new assignment when Hiroki stops by again to report that his cat has gone missing once more. This time, however, the children succeed in finding the animal without further incident.

File 059 - Festival Night
The two writers, Norikazu Sasai and Satoru Imatake, travel to Saitama to celebrate the Naomoto Prize that Imatake recently won. While Satoru is brushing his teeth, Norikazu trashes the hotel room. Satoru asks him the reason for this and inquires why he is wearing such a strange disguise. Norikazu then pulls out a gun and shoots Satoru. He takes Satoru's wallet and flees. Once outside, he disposes of his disguise, the gun, and the wallet in a river.
Conan, Ran, and Kogoro visit the Tenkaichi Festival, where the final character, "Ichi", is set ablaze. Ran explains the significance of the festival to Conan. However, the evening has not been very pleasant for Conan so far, as a balloon has been tied to his back. Norikazu Sasai arrives at the Tenkaichi Festival and asks Ran to take a photo of him with the character visible in the background. As a thank-you, he gives her a copy of his new book. He mentions that he used to write under the pseudonym Tomokazu Imai. Ran excitedly tells him that she read many of his books during her elementary school years.
Shortly thereafter, they run into Inspector Sango Yokomizo, who informs them of the death of Sasai's roommate, Satoru Imatake. Upon arriving at the crime scene, Inspector Yokomizo explains the circumstances of the murder. While Kogoro and Conan examine the body, Inspector Yokomizo asks for their identities. Kogoro introduces himself as a detective. Yokomizo greatly admires Kogoro and asks for his help in solving the case. While examining the corner of the victim's mouth, they discover traces of toothpaste. Kogoro suspects a robbery-murder, but Conan believes Sasai is the culprit. However, Sasai claims to have been at the festival the entire time and hands the police a disposable camera containing photos that show all three characters in the background. Since it is impossible to travel from the hotel room to the Tenkaichi Festival in just 25 minutes — and because he possesses a photo showing the character "Ten" in the background — he has a perfect alibi. Nevertheless, Conan remains convinced that Sasai murdered Mr. Imatake.
File 060 - A Perfect Alibi!?
Norikazu Sasai appears to have an alibi. Nevertheless, Inspector Yokomizo considers Sasai guilty. He suspects that the photos were taken some time ago and subsequently tampered with. However, a forensic examination revealed no evidence of camera tampering. Reception staff recalled him leaving the hotel and even asking for the time, as he had forgotten his watch that day. Conan Edogawa then asks Mr. Sasai why he didn't check his room to see if anything was missing; Sasai replies that he neglected to do so given the commotion surrounding his friend's death.
Shortly thereafter, Mr. Yamada — Satoru Imatake’s publisher — arrives. Sasai explains to Kogoro that Imatake had been working on a serial story titled "The Legend of the Sword Master" for the magazine "Monthly Literature Times". With the deadline — tomorrow — rapidly approaching, and knowing that Sasai used to co-author novels with Imatake, Yamada offers him the assignment. Sasai asks Inspector Yokomizo for permission to leave, as he now needs to write the next chapter of the story.
Conan asks Mr. Sasai if Imatake was a tidy person; Sasai confirms this. Conan points out to the others that the victim would never have opened the door to a stranger while brushing his teeth. Inspector Yokomizo concludes that, under these circumstances, Imatake would only have opened the door to someone he knew — such as his roommate, Mr. Sasai. Sasai reacts angrily, pointing to the photos that supposedly confirm his alibi. Conan knows Sasai is the culprit but cannot prove it; However, upon re-examining the photos, he discovers the crucial clue.

Conan Kidnapping Case

Characters introduced

  • File 051 - The Truth Under the Mask

Kogoro wakes up, notices a small, bleeding wound, and screams at the top of his lungs that he is dying.

  • Twin Brothers Case

    Gadgets introduced

A few days later, the Detective Boys are waiting for a new assignment when Hiroki stops by again to report that his cat has gone missing once more. This time, however, the children succeed in finding the animal without further incident.

  • Tenkaichi Festival Case

    Characters introduced

  • File 059 - Festival Night
