File 274 - The Shrunken Target

The hunters instantly open fire.

Conan, Ayumi, Genta, Agasa, and the three hunters follow a trail of potato chips left by Haibara and Mitsuhiko. However, after noticing that the trail of chips move in a way that suggests that the two are fleeing from the group, Conan senses that something is wrong. Conan secretly instructs Agasa to call both the lodge and the police to investigate the site where Mitsuhiko left his badge. Suddenly, the hunters hear a noise in the bushes, and all of them shoot at once. Yet, they all miss and the target, revealed to be a rabbit, runs off. Agasa protests the shots, but the hunters say that they can distinguish a children from a wild animal. Negoro adds that he is prepared to gun down Jubei should they meet. Saika replies derisively that Negoro’s bullets are harmless against her. Saika adds that he is the only one who is able to take down the beast, and that Jubei has been blind in one eye for twenty years thanks to him. Negoro, noticing that Saika's familiarity with Jubei, asks Yasaka about his background. Yasaka says that Saika was once the leader of a matagi hunting group in the North, but settled in this forest after meeting Jubei.
Mitsuhiko, consults Haibara on their next course of action. The girl says that they must wait for Conan to pick up on their hidden clues and call the authorities. For the time being, they must continue to move and try to relay more information to Conan. Soon, the bear cub approaches them once again, and this time decides to stay with them.

Back in the main group, Yasaka mentions that he has a hunter friend, and Conan asks if his friend is also in the forest as well: an assumption sparked after seeing Yasaka carry two types of bullets, which is uncommon for a hunter. Yasaka answers in the affirmative, explaining that he carries the other bullet type since his friend had forgotten his back-up bullets. They intended to exchange the rounds if they met in the forest. As the group leaves, Jubei ferociously lurks in the nearby shrubs; she is stalking the group.

Conan is seemingly oblivious to the encoded message.

Haibara suffers a severe sprain on her foot. Fortunately, Mitsuhiko is able to help alleviate her pain with his first-aid knowledge. Although proud of his abilities, he still feels inadequate when comparing himself to Conan. However, Haibara is able to reassure him by saying that who taught him is irrelevant, and that what is important is that Mitsuhiko has been able to apply his knowledge in such a critical situation. He then boldly puts Haibara’s arm across his shoulders to support her walk, and takes initiative in coming up with a new message for Conan.
Agasa receives a call from a police officer, who reports that they found both the corpse of a man and a bear cub by the hole in the mesh fence, both of whom were killed via gunfire. He adds that contrary to the state of the human body, the cub was properly buried in what appears to be a make-shift tomb. The hunters notice the call, and they ask what is going on; Conan hurriedly hangs up and misleads them with a fabricated story. Agasa asks why Conan wants to conceal information from them, and Conan replies that the murderer is likely among them, but without further evidence, he cannot confirm who.
After some more searching, the group stumbles upon a peculiar sight: a fly agaric, a matsutake, and a shiitake pierced on a stick, along with one hatsudake and three shimejis on the ground. Meanwhile, Haibara, Mitsuhiko, and the bear cub observe the group examine their encoded message from under a bush. Conan takes a good look at the mushrooms but labels it as trivial and casually tosses it aside. As the group leaves to continue their search, Conan prepares to stun the murderer, having deciphered the mushrooms. Unbeknownst to everyone, Jubei nears the group.

File 275 - True Motive

Conan aims his wristwatch at the culprit, but Genta notices him and obstructs his aim. Conan is forced to explain his actions to the other Detective Boys present. However, in doing so, he recalls what the police said about how the deceased cub was graciously buried. He realizes the flaw in his deduction and proceeds to lower his wristwatch, much to Haibara and Mitsuhiko's surprise. Conan instead calls for the culprit to step forward.

On the drive back, the Detective Boys debate both the morality of the culprit's actions and the comparative value of life between humans and animals. The atmosphere inside the Beetle suddenly becomes serious and slightly awkward. But Ayumi quickly lightens the mood by pointing out that Jubei was reunited with her cub. She expresses her sincere hope that they will soon find somewhere suitable to hibernate. Haibara gives a warm look towards her innocent and lively companions and smiles.

    File 276 - The Client Full of Lies

    Kogoro flirts with his beautiful client.

    Kogoro receives a call from a woman who wishes to employ his services in finding someone. Kogoro, whose attention is on a televised horse race, frantically tries to excuse himself from the job. Ran, however, is intolerant of Kogoro’s nonsense and tells him that he should be more dedicated to his work. The intense pressure from the girl forces Kogoro to oblige the caller's request. The Detective assumes his client is another unsightly elderly woman, but is dumbstruck to see a beautiful, elegantly-dressed middle-aged woman, named Shizuka Ikenami, standing at his door. As is typical of him in such situations, Kogoro rushes to sport a handsome suit to cordially greet his attractive client. His flirtatious behavior continues as the client explains that she wants Kogoro to find a man named Shiro Shibata, who was a member of her middle school kendo club. She adds that he likely possesses of a very precious photo of hers—one that Shizuka had forgotten to remove from the pages of a novel Shibata had lent her. Kogoro’s obsession with Shizuka culminates when she mentions her single status, and Ran, who has already been interjecting in their conversation with mentions her mother, openly mocks Kogoro for abandoning Eri, whom she believes to be just as glamorous as Shizuka.

    After talking to Shizuka for a long time, both in the Agency and in the Café Poirot downstairs, Kogoro concludes that there is not enough information to find Shibata or get in contact with him. Shizuka suggests Kogoro call Shinichi Kudo, who, according to her, is said to frequent the Detective Agency. While Kogoro and Ran deny such a claim, Conan worries that if rumors about Shinichi are circulating amongst regular civilians like Shizuka, the Black Organization may also soon hear about them. He decides to keep a lower profile in the future. Ran then asks for Conan's opinion on the case. The boy notices Shibata holding a trophy in Shizuka's club photo suggests that if Shibata had won his middle school kendo tournament, he may still be an active kendōka today. Kogoro calls various kendo leagues and confirms that Shibata is a regular participant in the Shizuoka Kendo Club. The group is relived by their discovery. Meanwhile, Conan views Shizuka from a different angle; he notes that Shizuka has told many unnecessary and trivial lies—indicated by the various contradictions in her narrative. He suspects she is concealing her true identity.

    Conan, Ran, Kogoro and Shizuka head to Shibata’s apartment in Shizuoka. When they arrive, they encounter a friend of Shibata, Takezo Yoshikawa, who finds it strange when Kogoro tells him that nobody responded when they rang the bell. Yoshikawa thus takes Conan and company back to Shibata’s door and expectedly finds it unlocked. They enter the apartment and find a meal half-eaten and the television on. Suddenly, Shibata's wife, Kyoko barks at Ran and Kogoro believing them to be intruders. The group then hears Yoshikawa's voice calling Shibata's name. They rush to the living room and find him dead—bludgeoned in the forehead and clutching Shizuka's photo in his right hand.

    File 277 - The Evidence Held

    Shizuka refuses to budge without a warrant.

    Inspector Sango Yokomizo arrives at the crime scene. After determining that Shibata likely died several hours ago, Yokomizo starts collecting alibis. Kyoko says that she left for an early golf meet at 5:00, and had prepared breakfast for her husband who returned home at 3:00. Yoshikawa confirms, stating they were playing Mahjong late into the night. Kogoro adds that the television was on when they entered the room, leading Kyoko to surmise that he was recording his favorite television show which starts at 8:00. Despite the many rows of recorded discs on display, Conan notices that the LaserDisc player is missing, pointing to the absent space on the shelf.
    Sometime later, an officer returns with a report on the suspect's alibis. Sango and Kogoro piece together the witness accounts and determine Shibata's time of death was between 8:00-8:45, absolving Kyoko. The Inspector's suspicions now turn to Yoshikawa, who has no alibi. His attention is also drawn to Shizuka, who he wrongly assumed was Kogoro's wife. After learning that she is the woman in the crumpled photograph in Shibata's hands, Sango insinuates that it may be a message from the victim. He also finds the novel Shibata had lent Shizuka, titled Raijin's Gate, crushed under his body. The discovery reminds Yoshikawa about a peculiar phone call Shibata received which asked him about Fūjin or Raijin. Kyoko adds that Shibata had rushed to open Raijin's Gate and said he found something in it before returning it to the top of a pile of books next to the bookshelf. A forensics officer then reports that they discovered a drop of blood in the hallway. While Sango consults his men, Conan learns that Shizuka had also lied about facets of Raijin's Gate's characters, the reason for her deception still eludes him. Another officer arrives and reports that they found a bloody bokken hidden in the apartment's emergency staircase. After learning that the bokken belonged to the apartment, Sango deduces that Shizuka is the culprit. He asks her to come with them to the police station, but she denies—stating that they need a warrant for her arrest. Conan then overhears the forensics officers find that Shibata's right hand is covered in blood, but the bandages on his remains remain untainted. He turns back to look at the bandages on Shizuka's hands before examining Shibata's right palm, finding a hemisphere-shaped blood mark. With the evidence in order, Conan determines the culprit's identity.

    File 278 - The Horrifying Woman

    Sango is steadfast in his request for Shizuka to come with them to the police station. Shizuka states that she will agree only if Kogoro deems it necessary for her to oblige the police. Kogoro is caught in a troubling dilemma which culminates in him being tranquilized by Conan. He sits in his chair and begins his deduction.

    Heiji arrives and reveals Shizuka's true identity.

    With the case closed, Shizuka accepts Sango's request and agrees to go to the police station as a witness. Before she can leave, Kogoro demands she answer why she lied repeatedly while in the Detective Agency. Kogoro points out that apart from the untruths about her culinary skills and about her trachea, she specifically lied about a character named "Reiko" appearing in the novel Raijin's Gate. Before she can respond, Heiji and Kazuha suddenly appear at the door, and the former explains that Shizuka instead meant "Reikō (冷コー)," which is a term that people from Osaka use to refer to ice coffee. Shizuka, aware that this word usage might reveal her origins, had to invent a story on the spot. Heiji also calls Shizuka "obasan." Kogoro, who happens to wake up at this moment, confronts Heiji over this term, lecturing him on his disrespectful attitude towards Shizuka. The latter is unfazed by Kogoro’s lambast, and reveals that Shizuka is his mother. Conan, Ran, and Kogoro are all astounded by this revelation.
    After leaving the apartment building, Shizuka reveals that she suspected that Kogoro was a cruel and unreasonable man who treated Heiji like a servant, citing Heiji's frequent injuries whenever he accompanied Kogoro. She also expresses her disappointment about Kogoro not visiting the Hattoris when he last visited Osaka.[1] She thus came to the Agency as a normal client to test Kogoro’s character (after calling Shibata and getting him to collaborate). Her conclusion, to the delight of Kogoro, is that he is the opposite of what she had in mind: a capable, intelligent and kind man who wrapped up the case quickly and saw right through her lies. Shizuka Hattori also says that she is happy to finally have the photo back, but her son thinks she told another lie, as Shizuka has previously said that she did not want a photo depicting her crying after losing a kendo match to a younger girl. Finally, Shizuka tells Kogoro that his good nature means that she can entrust Heiji and Kazuha to him with no fear; Kogoro does not know what she is talking about. Meanwhile, Ran wonders why Heiji and Kazuha brought their luggage.

    Mermaid's Curse Case

    Anime Episode 222-224: And Then There Were No Mermaids

    File 279 - The Mermaid's Curse?

    The protagonists approach "Mermaid Island."

    Kogoro begrudgingly joins Heiji's trip to a small island near the Wakasa Bay called Bikuni Island, colloquially known as "Mermaid Island." The two are joined by Conan, Ran, and Kazuha who say they are aware that a famous supercentenarian lives on the island, who apparently consumes the flesh of mermaids to remain young. Kogoro mocks the idea, but Heiji informs him that his client has requested protection from mermaids, believing they will soon kill her. Conan remains unimpressed, but gains some intrigue after Heiji tells him that although the letter was sent to him, the client had addressed the message to Shinichi Kudo. Kogoro asks for the client's identity, to which Heiji says her name is Saori Kadowaki. He adds that when he called her number, all he heard was a woman's wails along with the crashing of ocean waves.
    Once on the island, the group learns that Saori has been reported missing for three days. Before they can inquire further, the staff excuse themselves, saying they must prepare for the annual "Dugong Festival."

    The group explores the various yatais which line the streets—most of which sell mermaid-related merchandise. Heiji explains that the festival's name likely refers to the dugong, an animal which has historically served as the inspiration for many mermaid tales. They approach the souvenir store where Saori was formerly employed. A worker says that Saori had lost her "Dugong Arrow," a type of omamori which staves off aging, about a week ago and has been worried about misfortune ever since. Naoko Kuroe, another shop attendant, joins the conversation and asserts that mermaids exist–pointing to the 130-year-old Mikoto Shimabukuro. In the end, the worker points them to the island shrine, the home of Saori's childhood friend, Kimie Shimabukuro.

    The group arrive at the shrine and meet Kimie who confidently debunks the mythical tales surrounding immortality and mermaids, asserting that her great grandmother's unusually long life has naturally spurred countless superstitions. She recounts an excursion she made to the mainland dentist with Saori four days ago. She expresses her regrets in playing into the island's superstitions at the annual festival, believing that Saori had placed too much faith in the tradition. Toshimi Ebihara enters the conversation ridiculing Kimie's skepticism, stating that they discovered a mermaid's skeleton three years ago. Rokuro Fukuyama interjects, preventing Toshimi from spreading further rumors. He suggests the detectives investigate Saori's house, which Kimie offers to lead them to after the festival. Lastly, she offers Ran and Kazuha a chance to attain everlasting youth by becoming contestants in the festival's tradition.
    Later that day, drums echo in the night as Mikoto emerges from the shrine's interior to transfer flames from the outdoor fire pots to the shoji doors. The doors ignite, revealing three words which correspond to three of the tokens held by the contestants. Toshimi and Kazuha are amongst the trio of winners.
    The festival shifts to the "Mermaid's Waterfall" where the winners will receive a Dugong Arrow. Kimie calls the winners forward. Kazuha, Naoko, and Saori's drunkard father, Benzo Kadowaki, step forward. As Conan realizes Toshimi is missing from the group of winners, fireworks illuminate the night sky, revealing a grim sight in the waterfall; Toshimi's lifeless body hangs, dangling like a swimming mermaid.

    File 280 - The Elder's Prophecy

    Rokuro recounts the discovery of the "Mermaid's Skeleton."

    Conan and Heiji instruct Kimie to guide them to the top of the mountain. The three are joined by Rokuro and Kogoro as they recover Toshimi's body. Rokuro sees a guard post unearthed from the ground and postulates that Toshimi had been swept away by the river, and desperately grabbed onto the posts' rope. The rope would happen to wrap around her neck as she succumbed to the current's strength, consequently hanging her. Naoko arrives and suggests Toshimi was searching for the mermaid's grave, referencing the mermaid skeleton which was recovered from the ashes of a shrine shed that caught fire. Heiji inquires about the skeleton. Rokuro explains that after the fire was extinguished, the firefighters discovered a skeleton without its lower half. The police had surmised that a festival contestant had rummaged through the shed to look for spare Dugong Arrows but accidentally started a fire with their candle. With the skeleton's identity unknown, the shrine had her buried on the premises, but later moved the bones to a remote locations to prevent grave robbers from desecrating the remains. Rokuro coldly proposes that they move Toshimi's corpse down to the shrine, revealing that he cares little for his fiancé as their engagement was arranged by his late parents.
    While the victim's father mourns her death, Ran and Kazuha report that the police are unable to sail to the island due to the rough waves. Heiji and Conan instead rejoice, saying that the murderer can no longer escape to the mainland. They present an inner-tube they discovered further downstream, saying the culprit likely placed an unconscious Toshimi onto the floater, tied a rope around her neck, and pushed it downstream, ultimately resulting in her hanging. Ran worries the culprit might still be in the area, but Kazuha assures her that Heiji will quickly solve the case—explaining that Heiji's forward-facing cap indicates he is "on the case." Still, she asks Ran not to develop feelings for Heiji, feeling inferior to her friend. Endeared, Ran gives her a hug. Soon after, Naoko approaches Heiji, says she is suspicious of Benzo, and promptly departs.

    The group decide to enter the shrine and meet Mikoto. While they wait in the main room, Kazuha and Ran explain that festival contestants were typically chosen by having each member of the island draw from a large pile of wooden tokens, 108 of which are allowed to progress to the next stage. Mikoto would then choose three out of the 108 contestants to receive the Dugong Arrow. The group hears a knocking sound coming from the door and a freakishly old woman emerges from the shadows. Conan asks her how the three winning contestants are chosen. Mikoto comically responds that they are randomly selected. She hears Kimie's call that the bath is ready and takes her leave, however, not before ominously warning Kazuha to not lose her Dugong Arrow.
    The next day, a funeral service is held for Toshimi. Noticing Benzo is already present, the group joins Kimie and asks where he had been the previous night. She answers that he was reportedly quarreling with tourists at the bar, implying he was out drinking all night. They also notice Naoko is absent, when suddenly lightning brightens the shoji doors, revealing a disturbing sight. Conan and Heiji rush outside and see a lifeless Naoko caught in a net.

    File 281 - The Devil's Arrow

    Sensing danger, Heiji tells Kazuha to stick close to him.

    Heiji determines Naoko was strangled about one hour ago. The detectives note the footprints left by the culprit's rain boots and the imprint of the Naoko's Dugong Arrow in the sand. They follow the culprit's footprints and find it leading directly into the sea. Heiji also finds a shiny object in the sand, identifying it as a fish scale. The Fukui authorities finally arrive and begin their investigation.

    Heiji explains the situation to Ran and Kazuha, deducing that the killer entered and exited the crime scene along the shoreline, allowing the waves to wash away all footprints but those heading towards the sea. Kogoro asks the funeral-attendees about Naoko's schedule, learning that she was likely the first person to arrive at the funeral before heading towards the sea. Several of the funeral-attendees also claim to have seen Saori near the Mermaid's Waterfall the morning before the festival. Kogoro asks Benzo about the whereabouts of his daughter, but he expresses his ignorance. Kazuha begins to fear for her life as she clasps tightly on her Dugong Arrow. Noticing his friend's trepidation, Heiji tells her to "stay close to him."

    Heiji and Conan discuss the case, admitting they remain clueless to much of the case's mysteries. Believing the murders to be related to the Dugong Arrow and the festival's contestants, Kimie agrees to take them to the book of participants and the tokens each person received.
    While the group escorts an inebriated Kogoro from the funeral feast, Rokuro approaches Kimie and asks her if she has considered his "request." She declines, citing her commitment to Mikoto and the guilt she feels for Toshimi.

    On the road to the shrine, Kimie shares that her, Toshimi, Naoko, and Rokuro were classmates who made a student film about the famous "Bikuni Tale," which received many accolades. Once at the archives, Kimie finds that this year's list is missing. While her, Ran, and Kazuha search other rooms for it, Conan and Heiji flip through previous year's records and discover the names of various influential politicians, corporate executives, and celebrities. Conan notices the name "Shiho Miyano (宮野志保)" on one of the pages, and recalls that it was Haibara's real name. However, he dismisses it as a coincidence, believing she would not be the type of person to wish for eternal youth. The boys suddenly hear a scream from the hallway and rush to the girls' location. Ran and Kazuha claim they saw Saori staring at them from behind a pillar. They also say that Kimie had entered the old storage shed alone to look for the list. Heiji notices the broken window and senses danger. They rush to the shed only to find the building engulfed in flames.

    The fire rages through the night and is ultimately extinguished by the island fire department. They report they found one bespectacled body burnt beyond recognition, pointing to Saori as the victim. Conan has a faint suspicion about the victim's identity and suggests referencing the body's dental patterns with Kimie's, who has gone missing after the fire.

    Half a day later, Kogoro hears from the dental office confirming their worst fears. It was Kimie who perished in the flames. The group expresses their grief and regret, but none more than Rokuro, who slams his fists onto the ground in anguish.

    File 282 - The Last Arrow

    Ran, Kazuha, Conan, and Heiji informs Mikoto of Kimie's death. Conan also asks the woman who helped her relocate the mermaid's grave. The old woman responds that they have already passed.
    The group joins Kogoro who is rummaging through the remains of the storage shed. They see Ran hurriedly running towards them. She relays a phone call she received on behalf of the shrine; the caller expressed gratitude for donating a Dugong Arrow before the festival to them, saying their son's surgery has succeeded because of the generosity. Based on the caller's description, the boys deduce the donor is Benzo. Additionally, since the Arrow was received prior to the festival, the caller must have received Saori's Arrow. Heiji heads for the funeral home and instructs Kogoro and Conan to knock on Benzo's door.
    The funeral staff say that Benzo left the gathering moments after Heiji's company headed for the shrine, implying he beat the group to the contestant list and potentially committed the arson. Heiji realizes that Kazuha had followed him. She tells him that she is blessed with protection so long as she holds the Dugong Arrow—she vows to protect him. The forensics officers from the Fukui Police ask Heiji to identify his footprints from the night before. While doing so, Heiji notices a scratch on footprint left by Naoko's sandals. He borrows Kazuha's Arrow and finds that the scratch perfectly matches the tip.

    Kogoro rings Benzo's doorbell but gets no response. Rokuro then arrives and informs him of the house key hidden beneath the plant pot. While they enter the house to inspect Saori's room, Conan learns from Rokuro that Saori had feared the mermaids would exact "revenge" on her. The boy then rummages through Saori's duffle bag she readily prepared to escape from Benzo's household. Rokuro explains that Saori would always stay at Kimie's house, to the point where she would leave a set of clothes and spare glasses there. Conan suspects Saori's clothes were not placed on Kimie, but was rather purposefully worn. Kimie used her friends clothes to lure out the culprit who she assumed was hunting Saori. They ask for a photo album of Saori's face to confirm her appearance. Rokuro also shows them excerpts from their student film, which he says won gold purely because of Saori's cinematography of Kimie's makeup and styling. He adds that one year later, both his and Kimie's parents, along with Saori's mother, would perish in at sea during a storm. Conan searches through Saori's documents, noting that a crucial one is missing. An expression of utter shock crosses the boy's face as the realization sweeps across his mind.

    Heiji fights through the pain of Kazuha's arrow and refuses to let her go.

    Heiji receives a phone call from Conan. He states he's narrowed the suspects down to Rokuro or Benzo, mentioning that Benzo's figure prints were found on the inner-tube used to murder Toshimi. Conan breaks his silence and presents his alternate deduction. Hearing his words, Heiji expresses his disbelief, however, Conan stands firm, stating Sherlock Holmes' famous quote: "when you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth." Suddenly, an officer reports that they have located Benzo in the mountains and are currently in pursuit. Heiji hangs up the call and joins the officer in their search.
    Kazuha joins her friend as they wade through the forest bushes. The former smells smoke and sees it is coming from a secluded grave. Surmising that it must be the Mermaid's Grave, Heiji has an epiphany as he approaches the headstone, placing his hand on the top. However, he inadvertently causes the stone to fall backwards and tumble down the hill. Heiji reaches for it but finds he as at a cliff's edge. Before the boy can fall to his death, Kazuha grabs his hand and twirls him back to safety, but at the cost of hurling herself off the edge. Heiji panics and reaches for her—the two grabbing onto each other at the last moment—now dangling off of a tree branch.
    A town meeting is held at the shrine, with most of the funeral-attendees and policemen in attendance. At the head of the meeting sits an already sleeping Kogoro, who the officers bring an apprehended Benzo.
    Back at the cliff's edge, Heiji struggles to hold onto Kazuha. Noticing that the tree branch is starting to break due to their combined weight, Kazuha accepts her doom and tearfully apologizes to Heiji. She takes her Dugong Arrow and impales Heiji's hand.

    File 283 - Uncompensated Heart

    Kazuha's arrow falls into the cliff trailing a line of Heiji's blood. The girl looks up, moved by her friend's unyielding resolve to save her life.
    At the town hall, Conan anxiously waits for Heiji's arrival as the police officers grow restless. The door opens and Ran escorts Mikoto into the room to the surprise of those in attendance. With all actors in place, Kogoro's deduction show begins.

    With the case solved, Heiji looks on, feeling vindicated. He firmly states his belief that immortality is an inane desire which only strips away the valuableness of life itself. With those words uttered, he looks down on an unconscious Kazuha, who remains very much alive.
    The next day, the group boards a ship to return to the mainland. While Heiji and Conan remain confused as to why Saori's letter was addressed to Shinichi, the group runs into Yukiko Katsuragi and Takayoshi Tsujimura, whom they had previously met when diplomat, Isao Tsujimura, was murdered.[2] Yukiko reveals that she is from Bikuni Island, and that she was neighbors with Saori. Additionally it was Yukiko who had given Saori the recommendation to contact Shinichi Kudo after witnessing his incredible deductive skills in person. Kogoro then asks why the two were visiting the island. They explain the island is also known for its incredible seafood cuisine, which gives Kogoro hope that the island may one day economically and communally recover. Ran then approaches Heiji and asks him to show her the "Love Mark" Kazuha left on him. Heiji shows his left hand, claiming that it had healed over night. As the girls express a mix of disappointment and relief, Conan notices Heiji's bandaged right hand hidden deep in his pocket.

    File 284 - The Buried Secret

    A masked man attacks a ganguro girl with a metal bat.

    A ganguro girl calls her friend from a telephone booth late at night. While she relays her intended schedule, a menacing figure emerges from a nearby car wielding a dented metal bat. All the woman can do is scream as the masked assailant violently strikes her down.
    The next day, Sonoko and Ran shop at the Haido Department Store. Ran learns that Sonoko is attempting to purchase a hand-woven sweater for Makoto and pass it off as her own work. She agrees to keep her secret out of respect for her having the courage to express her feelings to Makoto. Sonoko denies having done so, showcasing her romantic plans to elicit jealousy and clinginess in him. Sonoko shifts the conversation towards Shinichi, asking if Ran knows how he feels about her. Conan, who is also at the store, feels awkward about eavesdropping in the conversation and leaves to join Kogoro.

    Conan and Kogoro walk through the streets until Kogoro spots a beautiful woman exiting a phone booth. Conan notices a pen left on the booth floor, prompting Kogoro to go and flirtatiously return it to the woman. However, the moment he places his hand on her shoulder she grapples him to the ground, allowing dozens of police offers to appear and swarm the confused Kogoro.

    Juzo Megure recalls an unfortunate case from long ago.

    After the two parties sort their misapprehensions, Kogoro is informed about the serial attacker who specifically targets young ganguro girls. Assistant Inspector Sato, the woman who Kogoro had encountered, was the bait for a sting operation the police had launched in hopes of finding the culprit. Megure shows the three victims: Ryoko Mizutani, Hitomi Endo, and Michiko Ishiguro—all three of whom, have no personal connection to one another. Kogoro recalls a similar cold-blooded case which occurred years before he became an officer. Megure gravely refers to a case where a serial killer repeatedly committed hit-and-runs against school girls. The Inspector appears affected by the memories, and subsequently cancels their plans for future sting operations. As the police make their exit, Conan notices Sonoko's jewelry—pointing out that it matches those worn by the victims. The girl explains that the Haido Department Store organized a "Millennium Sale," where customers could receive a piece of jewelry for every ¥10,000 they had spent while shopping. The police realize the victims must have all been customers at the department store.
    Meanwhile, Ran, who had been on call with Sonoko after getting lost in the basement parking lot, screams after discovering the body of a lifeless ganguro girl who was bludgeoned on the head. The authorities arrive and secure the area, holding back the murdered victim's boyfriend, who grieves while calling the police "useless." The man's words trigger painful memories in Megure, who recalls events about a young school girl who became seriously injured after volunteering as bait for a sting operation.
