Kazuha is relieved to learn the shopkeeper had held onto her missing wallet. However, the warm feelings melt away upon learning of the death that had occurred just outside.<br>
 +
Inspector Otaki arrives on the scene and discusses the events leading to the victim's death with Kogoro. The latter explains the victim is Yuji Kato, who played Toyotomi Hideyoshi that day amongst the tour group. He additionally deduces the death is a suicide, given no sane individual would climb onto the Osaka Castle roof in the rain while wearing a flammable fabric.<br>
 +
Meanwhile, Heiji has Conan climb onto the Osaka Castle roof in the rain. Still, he employs a rope as a harness. Conan finds a lighter and a quadrant-shaped mark left on the roof beam.<br>
 +
Heiji returns to ground-level and shares their findings, disagreeing with Kogoro's suicide-related assessment. He mentions the strange position of the lighter, stating it was found further up the roof instead of towards the ledge. Additionally, a person who immolated themselves would not bother to close the lid of their lighter. These two circumstances paint a picture that suggests murder. Several forensics officers then arrive and display Kato's possessions. Otaki's is intrigued by the peculiar charred scroll and unravels its contents, finding the lone "龍" kanji written in the top right corner. The tour members group all react in shock. Otaki also finds an earthenware shard and takes a closer look. Kazuha appears over the Inspector's shoulder and recounts her father's conversation with Heizo Hattori about the case from thirteen years ago and the associated "incredible treasure left by mortals." Although Heiji is dismissive at first, Conan notices the shard's interior sparkle with gold, giving credence to the idea of a sleeping treasure. The two boys shift their attention to what Kato meant by grabbing the umbrella, believing he was implying something about the rain. After some time, they simultaneously associate the rain with the scroll and swipe the artifact from Otaki's hands. They hold the open scroll to the raining sky and see writing appear on the page. <br>
 +
Observing their discovery from afar, the various members of the tour group begin exhibiting suspicious behavior. Fukushima manically fantasizes about the treasure; Wakisaka pulls out and examines a piece of earthenware of his own; Kasuya calls someone over the phone, directing them to remain on standby; and Katagiri ominously smirks.

The shopkeeper actually has Kazuha's wallet and the latter is overjoyed. She says there are plenty of charms in it in order to bring good luck around her, yet she adds it doesn't always work as the shopkeeper comments on a murder which has just occurred near the store. Otaki and the police arrive and Kogoro has some empathy for the inspector who has to solve two murders in two days. Kogoro says he quickly found the identity of the victim since the latter wore the paulownia flower badge emblem of Hideyoshi, then it's Yuji Kato, who plays Hideyoshi in the game trip. The four other participants introduce themselves to Otaki and confirm Kato's death, and explain Otaki the game. Kato had been missing and they all went and looked for him, hoping to find him very quickly as he wore a big and very noticeable red woolen jumper. They never expected him to die, and don't know at all the reason why Kato committed suicide by setting himself alight. Otaki asks why Kogoro thinks Kato killed himself, and he answers that Kato deliberately put on such a flammable jumper, and climbed up the roof, despite heavy rain, in order to commit suicide in a rather spectacular way.

Heiji shares his findings about the supposed hidden treasure and the mysterious scroll Kato had carried. Otaki and Kogoro stare perplexed at the double-gourd shaped outline illustrated on the page. Ran and Kazuha suggest the shape represents a calabash, citing the calabash as being Hideyoshi's horse insignia. Additionally, the girls point to the earthenware shards and wonder if they belonged to a calabash-shaped container which held gold. Kogoro comments on the treasure's small-scale, but Heiji retorts that according to legend, Hideyoshi would tie an additional gold-filled calabash to his major insignia after each victory—creating the Sennari Byoutan. If such a mythical artifact were to exist, it would be worth a colossal fortune. Kogoro still expresses his doubts about the validity of the legend, but Fukushima and Wakisaka show their opportunism, citing claims of Hideyoshi hoarding vast amounts of wealth in Osaka Castle even after his death. Heiji adds that since the burnt scroll is labeled with the kanji for "dragon (ryu (龍))," there must be a counterpart scroll labeled with the kanji for "tiger (tora (虎))." Ginshiro then arrives and corroborates Heiji's deduction, much to the surprise of the investigating group. Kazuha explains she called her father so they can leave the case to the police, stating her desire to leave the case behind them and enjoy the rest of their trip. Heiji roars at her for interfering with his work, but quickly softens his demeanor after feeling Ginshiro's intense gaze. Seemingly annoyed, Kazuha walks off with Ran to get food. Nevertheless, she fondly looks back at Heiji hard at work and gives a warm smile. The tour group members also state their desire to momentarily depart from the scene; Otaki hesitantly agrees. Ginshiro, having heard one of their voices, is reminded of a horrific scene he had witnessed in the past. He gives Otaki a silent instruction and proceeds to call Heizo. <br>
 +
At a restaurant, Ran deduces that Kazuha's true intentions were not for her father to takeover the investigation but rather for him to assist Heiji with information about the previous, related cases. Kazuha blushes and confesses she is attracted to the joyous smile Heiji gives after solveing a case. Ran says she feels the same way about Shinichi and the two girls bond over their romantic similarities.<br>
 +
Back at the castle, Conan discovers a battery near the structure's base, believing it proves Kato's death was a murder.<br>
 +
The girls return from the restaurant, having realized they had forgotten to take Conan with them. On their way to the crime scene, they notice a fire rapidly spreading across the arm of nearby person—a fire they had lit with their own lighter. The girls watch in shock as the individual climbs over a railing and falls into a river. Their screams alert the authorities, who manage to pull a deceased Katagiri from the water. They note her primary cause of death was not due to drowning or burning but rather blunt force trauma to her head.
 +
Meanwhile, Heiji harshly questions Kazuha about the events she witnessed, fiercely doubting the possibility of a suicide. Heiji rushes over to the victim's corpse and frantically searches for clues. Suddenly, a firm hand grabs the boy's hood and strikes him with a powerful punch. Heiji tumbles to the ground and sees his father, Heizo, standing before him.

Meanwhile, Heiji ties a rope around Conan and cranes him down over the roof, in order to hold him since the roof is dangerous and slippery. Conan investigates the place where Kato started to burn, and notices some small charred remains, along with a lighter, and under the lighter he notes there is a kind of cone-shaped mark. The four participants discuss Kato's death, and Katagiri says none can really know what one truly hides in their deeper self, and Kasuya adds Kato chose to die as a war hero on the Osaka Castle. Heiji shows Kato's lighter to Otaki, but refuses to believe the suicide theory : when someone sets themselves on fire, they don't usually take the time to close their lighter and put it leisurely over the roof. It's very likely that the lighter could have closed itself when falling from Kato's hand on the roof, but then why is it on the flat part of the roof, why didn't it slide along the curved part, and then fell down somewhere on the roof or on the ground ? Moreover, something cylindrical had been placed on the flat part of the roof before it started raining, and then someone removed that item, and put the lighter instead, explaing the cone-shaped mark. This item certainly has to do with the small charred remains over the roof.

 +
Heizo callously admonishes his son, stating his investigative actions only result in the destruction of important evidence. Otaki attempts to step in, believing Heizo's actions are too severe, but is stopped by Ginshiro, who reminds him of the task he was assigned. Now understanding of the Superintendent Supervisor's intentions, Otaki condones the act. Heizo then quickly disbands the investigation after hearing Otaki's premature assessment categorizing the two incidents as suicides. Meanwhile, a silhouette calmly watches from amongst the crowd.<br>
 +
Otaki and Kogoro attempt to console a seemingly devitalized Heiji. Kazuha wonders if Heizo had removed Heiji from the case to protect him from a nefarious gang, who committed several murders and robberies in the wake of the discovery of the first burnt corpse. If such a gang (who is still at-large) is also behind the most recent string of murders, the case could prove perilous down the stretch. Heiji, on the other hand, smiles—never having been more motivated to continue his investigation. <br>
 +
Despite Heiji's enthusiasm, Otaki reminds him that Katagiri's death is almost certainly a suicide. However, Heiji disagrees, pointing to several parts of her trench coat which bear peculiar marks. Kogoro identifies the marks as blood, allowing Heiji to specify they are the result of the culprit picking Katagiri's unconscious body up from the ground after bludgeoning her with a hard object. He explains Kazuha and Ran had seen Katagiri's unconscious body catch fire shortly before falling into the river—making her death appear like a suicide. The girls disagree, stating they saw her physically squirm while burning. In response, Heiji simply assumes their perceptions were hampered by the darkness. The group is then approached by the three surviving tour group members: Kasuya, Fukushima, and Wakisaka, who are still oblivious to Katagiri's death.<br>
 +
After being given a briefing on the situation, the three men are asked about their most recent actions. Kasuya and Wakisaka both claim to have dined—at different restaurants—while Fukushima says he returned to the hotel to change clothes. Kogoro suggests the culprit leveraged the power dynamics of the role-playing to instruct both Kato and Katagiri to immolate themselves, but the theory is immediately dismantled by the suspects, who assert that their given roles were in no position to give Hideyoshi and Nene orders. A forensics officer then shows Otaki two curios found on Katagiri's person: an earthenware shard and a photograph depicting Kato, Katagiri, and three other individuals holding the dragon scroll. Fukushima recognizes one of the three unnamed individuals as Hirano, the man who proposed the Hideyoshi tour. The suspects explain he was unable to attend the tour due to a sudden commitment.<br>
 +
The three suspects leave the scene once again, while Conan and Heiji discuss their current deductions. Their conversation touches on a strange zipper-shaped blood mark left on Katagiri's right side. After some thought, the two simultaneously come to the same conclusion about the culprit's method but remain unsure of the culprit's identity. A sudden gust of wind blows through the group and carries Ran's umbrella out of her hands and into the air. The two boys watch the parasol float through the air and realize they both made a massive mistake in their previous deductions. The two boys rush off as Kazuha proudly remarks on seeing Heiji's confident smile. <br>
 +
The two boys run through the streets of town, desperately searching for the three suspects, one of whom they believe may be intending to claim another life. Conan notices Kasuya mundanely meandering the sidewalk across the street and attempts to call the police. Heiji, however, stops him. Not wanting the police's presence to scare their target, he lunges over the guard rail and begins tailing Kasuya. Conan expresses his concern while a large group of menacing men quietly observe the boys from down the street.

The forensics show Otaki Kato's burned belongings, among which a small piece of burned earthenware, and a burned scroll. When Otaki says the ideogram "dragon" is featured on the top right corner of the scroll, the four participants suddenly get tense. Kazuha says the piece of earthenware maybe has to do with the similar ones found on corpses that were discovered at Osaka Castle recently and thirteen years ago, both completely burned. She goes on telling Heiji about the conversation she heard in the car yesterday, explaining the 848, the location of the bodies, and so on. As she tells about "the treasure of the mortals", the other participants listen carefully and with a certain excitement. Conan tells Heiji the inner part of the earthenware has shiny sparkles, which might be gold, but doesn't seem to be very worthy. Both detectives try to think more deeply about the case, and are reminded of Kato's dying message with the umbrella. They reflect on the link between umbrella/rain and Osaka Castle. Heiji says Osaka Castle's Sakura Gate has a stone called Tako on its left and right, and there is also a wall protecting its central tower, with a stone called Ryuko. And just like the Tako stone, the Ryuko stone, when it's raining, shows a kind of mirage where it's possible to make out a tiger and dragon.

Heiji and Conan observe Kasuya pull open the doors to an abandoned factory and step inside. Despite Conan's qualms about the situation, Heiji pushes onward and into the factory. His attention is soon consumed by his target to the point where he fails to notice Conan's abduction at the hands of a tailing silhouette.
Conan and Heiji suddenly realise something then, and snatch the scroll from Otaki's hands to wet it under the rain : their idea turns out to be the right one as the water discloses a hidden message on the scroll : a kind of double-circle item and its measurements (with old medieval units) on the left, and an illegible message on the right. Conan and Heiji believe there is indeed a hidden treasure somewhere in the castle, which greatly arouses Fukushima's curiosity, while Wakisaka is examining a piece of earthenware he seems to own, and Kasuya calls someone to which he says they should wait a moment and stay where they are for now, as the police seems to still have a long way to go. He adds they shouldn't worry as the item in question is close to hand, therefore no need to change their plans. Katagiri, as to her, mysteriously smirks at the whole situation.
+
<spoiler>

+
As Kasuya ascends the dark staircases to the factory's upper level, he sees Shigehiko Wakisaka patiently awaiting his arrival. Kasuya asks for the tiger scroll; Wakisaka points to a box placed at the edge of the platform. Kasuya rushes over and excitedly opens the container, finding dozens of various items. He complains about the darkness, unable to discern the various items in the box. Wakisaka ominously grins and suggests using the flashlight placed beside the box. Heiji then steps forward and yells for Kasuya to halt his actions, stating he will combust if he turns the light on.<br>
File 319 - Back to the Past...
+
The Method:<br>

+
Heiji explains that Wakisaka had murdered Kato and Katagiri by claiming to know the location of the tiger scroll, allowing him to lure them to their deaths. In the case of Kato, he informed him that the tiger scroll was hidden beneath one of Osaka Castle's roof tiles. Kato would logically wait to investigate at night to minimize the chances of being seen by bystanders, meaning he would lack visibility. He used his lighter to illuminate his surroundings, but after finding a flashlight left on the roof, he would place his lighter down and switch to the flashlight. Little did he know it was a trap set by Wakisaka, which exploded onto the man's flammable clothing, lighting him ablaze. The quadrant-shaped mark left on the roof was due to the flashlight creating a circular dry mark on the roof during the rain. Kato then placed his lighter, covering only a quarter of the circle, leaving only a dry quadrant when Conan found the mark. <br>
Heiji and Conan found out part of the truth about the treasure, and Heiji reveals that the pieces of earthenware found on the three victims, and that contain gold, are actually made of sand mixed with gold. He adds that rainwater actually disclosed the truth about the scroll : it was composed of several sheets stuck together one over the other, and only wetting it could enable the true scriptures to appear. Heiji says it's just like the Tako or Ryuko stones : when rainwater comes in contact with them, some dragon and tiger shapes come out, due to wetting. Though, Otaki says most of the scroll's instructions went into ashes. And Kogoro doesn't get the meaning of the double-circle shape on the scroll, and Ran and Kazuha say it might be a flask, an item which is representative of Hideyoshi's notorious alcoholism. Therefore, the piece of earthenware may be a flask's, in which gold dust would have been stored. As Kogoro says that, according to the measurements, the flask is quite small (30 centimetres), which makes for a rather tiny treasure, Heiji underlines that, indeed, a single flask of gold dust would not be enough, but what about that legend according to which Hideyoshi would, after each victory, tie a little flask to his spear, and it is said that his spear was considered as the symbol of his riches, since it would then carry not less than 1000 flasks each filled with gold dust, the "Bunch of the 1000 Flasks", which would resemble his paulownia emblem, with a huge flask on the top, the tiny others below, and several ribbons fluttering in the wind. If the scroll leads to the 1000 flasks Hideyoshi could have hidden in his castle after his death, then that really makes for a colossal wealth, not forgetting the added value of 500-year-old famous golden items.
+
In the case of Katagiri, the individual Kazuha and Ran had witnessed fall into the river was not Katagiri but Wakisaka. Katagiri was bludgeoned sometime prior and thrown into the water. Wakisaka poured kerosene onto the portion of her body that remained floating about the water level and returned to the main road. He then waited for a witness to pass by before lighting his trench coat on fire, dropped his lighter onto the Katagiri's flammable body below, and dropped himself into the river—successfully extinguishing the flames on his body. Kasuya questions how Wakisaka's hair remained dry after falling into a river. Heiji replies that he wore a dry suit under his clothing to both mitigate burns and prevent wetness. Additionally, the dry suit is equipped with a zipper, which pressed against Wakisaka's role-playing pin and created the circular zipper mark left on Katagiri's body. Therefore, by examining his pin, forensic analysts will be able to recover traces of Katagiri's blood, serving as undeniable evidence for his crimes.<br>

+
Additionally, Wakisaka likely murdered the Hideyoshi tour's creator, Hirano. Heiji explains he had Agasa check Hirano's website where he would publish daily entries on his blog. He had mysteriously stopped uploading entries roughly three weeks prior, lining up with the discovery of the second burned victim found in the castle's outer moat. <br>
Heiji supposes that, given three people were killed in the same way, each having a piece of flask in his pocket, and probably looking for the treasure, especially since Kato had a scroll, this means someone close to them and mad about Hideyoshi and his treasure could have killed them, in order to be the sole owner of the treasure, and, saying so, Heiji casts a suspect glance at the participants. Kazuha adds her father and Heiji's figured out the truth even without the scroll since one of the fragments Toyama had with him and had found on one of the first corpses had the shape of a jar opening, and moreover the 848 number could lead to the flask being the 848th out of the 1000. If they found gold dust inside, then it's perfectly normal they came up to that conclusion. This can't only be a myth then, since it is said Hideyoshi had poured a great quantity of gold dust into his castle's wells in order to purify the water, and Ieyasu would shudder at imagining his rival's enormous riches. Hideyoshi though made the whereabouts of his treasure secret as he concealed the clues that could lead to it : sticking the sheets of the scroll together, mixing gold dust with sand inside the flasks, etc.
+

+
The Motive:<br>
Toyama comes along and interrupts Heiji to add that the dragon scroll inevitably refers to the tiger's one, since just like both Tako and Ryuko stones show a dragon and a tiger, there are actually two scrolls, one for the dragon to show part of the clue to the treasure, and one for the tiger to show the other part, and it's necessary to wet the tiger's one just as well to figure out the truth. Kazuha says she's the one who called her dad, as the Prefectural Police is very close, and she wants her father to investigate the case for Heiji to leave the crime scene at last, and come with her and the others to have a bite to eat. Besides, Toyama knows more about the previous similar cases than Heiji does. The latter starts yelling at Kazuha just like usual, but quickly stops as Toyama coldly glowers at him, and rather suggests she should go and wait for him there. Kazuha then leaves in anger, but turns around discreetly to cast a glance at Heiji and behold, with a certain loving interest, her friend's deep and passionate concentration on the case. The game participants ask if they can do the same, and then come back, as they haven't eaten a single thing since noon, and they want to change clothes due to rain. Otaki agrees to let them go as their hotel is near, but orders them to come back to the Castle as quick as possible once they're done. Toyama suddenly turns around as he recognises a voice he heard a long time ago, and which has to do with a bloody crime scene with banknotes all over. Toyama then gives Otaki a secret order and the latter complies and goes away, while Toyama gives a phone call to Heizo.
+
Wakisaka explains he desired to kill Hirano, Kato, Katagiri, and Kasuya to avenge his murdered grandfather, Masakiyo. He was the old man pictured in the center of the photograph carried by Katagiri, and was a proud fan of Hideyoshi's history. Thirteen years ago, he wished to end the search for Hideyoshi's treasure and donate the dragon scroll to the state. A rift soon formed between him and those who remained committed to the hunt. One day, Masakiyo traveled to Osaka to convince his colleagues to yield their commitment; he never returned. Wakisaka recognized Masakiyo as the first burnt victim because he recognized the recovered shard as an artifact his grandfather kept secret, along with the tiger scroll. He admits he had difficulties locating his four targets because "one of them" had changed their appearance. Heiji then realizes the fifth individual pictured in the photograph is Arihiro Kasuya.<br>

+
<br>
At the noodles restaurant close to the castle, Ran has Kazuha own up to having actually called her father to increase Heiji's interest in the case, and having the pleasure then to behold his lovely face when he's overfond of something. Ran says Kazuha's just as stupid as she is, since Ran also loves seeing Shinichi's passionate face during cases, though it gets on her nerves somehow. Ran realises Conan is not with them and probably remained at the castle. That same Conan finds a burned battery near the place where Kato had fallen, and he and Heiji realise Kato's death is actually not a suicide but a well-performed murder. Ran and Kazuha quickly leave the restaurant after eating since Ran is worried about Conan, and Kazuha tries to comfort her saying police agents are everywhere due to the recent crime, and he's not in danger, and no murders can occur any longer. Though, they notice in front of her Maho Katagiri who sets herself alight with a lighter and throws herself into the river. Ran and Kazuha rush to the bridge's guardrail and see her burning corpse in the river, and they start screaming and calling the police. Suddenly, they spot someone spying on them from behind, but the person runs away.
+
He turns to the old man only to see him joined by dozens of armed men. Kasuya, the leader of the gang, explains they are in the process of locating Wakisaka's home—where he assumes he stored the tiger scroll. Before he executes his two victims, Kasuya asks how Heiji determined Wakisaka as the culprit, as the tricks outlined could have also been performed by Fukushima or himself. Conan's voice then echoes through the factory, stating: "the umbrella." The parties look up in shock as they see the boy confidently perched atop the platform above them. He explains that when Kato grabbed the umbrella, he was referring not to the rain, but to Oda Nobunaga's horse insignia, which takes the form of an umbrella. Since Wakisaka was role-playing as Nobunaga, Kato was pointing to him as the culprit. Impressed, Kasuya demands that the boy join his friend below. Despite Heiji's warnings, Conan appears to oblige, hopping over the railing and landing directly in front of Heiji. However, instead of a small seven-year-old boy, the Osaka Prefectural Police Superintendent Supervisor Heizo Hattori stands before the gang of criminals. Bright lights blast the scene, revealing swarms of police officers and riot guards closing in around the gang members. Upon Heizo's command, the police quickly subdue the criminals and put a swift end to the thirteen-year-long case. <br>
 +
As Wakisaka, Kasuya, and the gang members are carted off in the police bus, Kasuya comments on Wakisaka's ostensible success (his enemies vanquished and his family in possession of the tiger scroll). Wakisaka denies the assumption, stating the tiger scroll was nothing more than a humorous note written by the famous historical thief, Kajisuke, about stealing Hideyoshi's treasure. Shocked, Kasuya demands to know why Masakiyo never divulged such information to his colleagues. Wakisaka, with a saddened expression, says his grandfather did not want to ruin his friends' dreams.

The next day, Heiji is flabbergasted to learn his father was using him as bait for a sting operation. Conan says that after Heizo "abducted" him in the factory, he rationalized his actions by saying the culprits were well accustomed to the "scent of the police," and thus Heiji was the perfect tool for luring out the catch. Conan also reveals that Heizo knew the murderer's identity immediately after hearing about Kato's dying message, further sparking Heiji's anger. <br>

Meanwhile, at the Hattori residence, Shizuka scolds her husband for putting their son in danger.

Katagiri's body is fished out, half-burned, and Otaki notices she actually died of a blunt force trauma, probably when her head violently hit one of the bridge's pillars when she jumped, leading them to believe she indeed committed suicide. However, Heiji harshly questions Kazuha, saying it's impossible she killed herself, and that the runaway person they saw must be the one who killed her from far, using a kind of trick. The girls though deny it as impossible. Heiji gets infuriated and starts searching the victim's corpse, despite this being strictly forbidden, and suddenly Heizo grabs him by the collar and punches him violently in the face.

Heiji doesn't get why his father punched him, and the latter answers his son is completely unable to keep a cool head, instead just annoying police, he's nothing but a vain sprog thinking he's a great detective but actually just destroying paramount exhibits by searching a corpse in such a disrespectful way. Heizo then tells his son to clear off, as the police will try to prevent the murders Heiji was unable just to foresee. As Otaki tries to step in, Toyama holds him back, asking him if he did follow his orders to have a certain person shadowed by his men. Hearing that, Otaki figures out why Heizo acted that way with Heiji : in order to protect his son. Otaki tells Heizo about the murders, adding that the forensics actually found nothing but Kato's fingerprints on his lighter. He underlines there's no point thinking about anything else but suicide, unless they find any other elements. Heizo orders him to leave a couple of agents dealing with the case, and tells the other ones, including himself, Toyama and Otaki, to leave the place since police have more serious cases to investigate than such base ones. Otaki stands flabbergasted while Toyama can't believe Heizo really "has the intention to do it". Meanwhile, a mysterious suspect is glaring at the police officers from among the crowd.

Otaki tries to convince Heiji to stop sulking and being so sad, since his father did it "just because he's infuriated at the fact two people were killed near the police headquarters". While Kogoro says this is not a reason to punch him in the face, Kazuha says maybe Heizo did it due to what she heard in the car, the fact that the murderer could be that serial bank robber who started to operate just after the first discovery of the burned out body thirteen years ago. Those 5 bank heists were responsible for the death of not less than seven people, and the robber and his dangerous gang are still walking free. Kogoro understands and pokes fun at the situation of a caring father going as far as beating up his son in order to protect him from a case which is even more dangerous than he thinks. Heiji gets up and says he would almost cry about this situation too, actually cry about his father's utter stupidity, since hitting him made him even more eager to looking for the true murderer, and he adds he's not as understanding as Minamoto no Yoshitsune, who was saved by Benkei in the Kanjinchō.

Conan thinks about it, and wonders why Heizo beat up his son, knowing this would prompt him even more to disobey. Heiji says Katagiri didn't commit suicide, and asks Otaki to have a look at Katagiri's coat's right side, where they spot three strange but similar small blood marks. This probably means Katagiri was bashed by her attacker, and her blood splashed on the latter, who left three blood marks of "something" from his clothes on Katagiri's coat while carrying her body. This also means she was probably already dead when Kazuha and Ran saw her, though the girls deny it absolutely, since she was moving as if she suffered from fire. Anyway, Heiji says the three participants are the most suspicious ones since two victims out of the four were from their own tour group, and Heiji and Otaki question them as they arrive at the Gokuraku Bridge, wondering what's happened. Fukushima wonders why she committed suicide, and Otaki says suicide is just a possibility. Kasuya declares he went to have a snack in a close-by bar, while Wakisaka did the same but not at the same place, and Fukushima went back to Nanayari Hotel to change clothes and come back right after. He was with Katagiri but underlines he would have stayed with her if he had known what was about to occur. As Kogoro hears the girls say Kato and Katagiri might have been "ordered" to kill themselves, he turns to Wakisaka, saying that "Nobunaga" could have ordered them to die...

Kasuya steps in, saying Fukushima could have used Mitsuhide's three minutes to switch roles with any of the other characters and order something just as well. Kasuya also emphasizes that, being Ieyasu, he can't have ordered such a thing. Though, Wakisaka and Fukushima believe it impossible that someone just kill themselves on orders from anybody. What's more, Katagiri had the role of an observer, and then she would have certainly been more suspicious than usual, and it's just unlikely to think they kept on playing the game even though one of them had died before their eyes. The forensics tell Otaki they've found another fragment on Katagiri, along with a photograph showing five people standing around the dragon's scroll, including younger Kato and Katagiri, implying they know each other. None seems to know who are the three other people on the picture except the younger Hirano, the trip's planner, who was supposed to come with them but had a last-minute hitch which had him postpone his coming. The three participants say Hirano should be the first one to be questioned if the serial killer has a connection with the trip, and they tell Otaki the name of Hirano's website, before going back to their hotel.

Conan believes the person Kazuha and Ran saw on the bridge has to be the murderer, though he still can't figure out how Katagiri was killed since the girls saw her suffering from fire before leaping into the void. Both detective boys deduce the culprit left blood zipper marks on Katagiri, yet all three participants wear clothes with zippers, and Conan wonders what could be the reason why the murderer changed clothes before and after his deed. And eventually, he and Heiji find out something interesting. The wind then starts to pick up and Ran's umbrella flies away in the air, and at last the detectives understand their mistakes and discover the whole truth. Kazuha tells Otaki and co that Heiji seemed to have found out who the murderer is, and he's quickly run away with Conan. Both boys indeed rush into the city to try and find the three participants. Conan seems to have phoned the hotel and gotten confirmation that one of the participants at least is innocent since he directly went back to the hotel, while the two others didn't.

Heiji fears the killer might murder another person, and Conan says indeed it's the case, since the police will quickly find out something went wrong with the "suicides", and thus there's only little time left for the killer to assassinate his last victim. They suddenly spot Kasuya and deduce "he probably wants to erase the evidence of his guilt". Conan decides to call the police but Heiji tells him to hang up : police will probably have the murderer fly away, whereas a deduction show from two kids won't scare him and will lead him to confess more easily.

Saying so, they start tailing Kasuya, but are completely unaware that they are being followed by a gang of dangerous crooks.

File 321 - The Sad Tiger Scroll
Heiji and Conan notice Kasuya enters a strange warehouse, while Conan's got the feeling they are being watched for and followed. Indeed, as they enter the warehouse too, they don't realise the gangsters are just nipping at their heels. Conan prepares his stungun wristwatch while Heiji keeps an eye on Kasuya's moves. Suddenly, Conan is discreetly abducted by an unknown assailant in the dark, without Heiji's noticing it, and the latter says he'll go first after Kasuya, and Conan will follow him once he's done with relieving himself. Kasuya knows he's being tracked by Heiji but pretends not being aware of it, and keeps on climbing up the stairs, at the top of which he meets...

<spoiler>...Shigehiko Wakisaka who was waiting for him as planned. Wakisaka says the item is inside a big tools box, and Kasuya goes on searching for it, Wakisaka advising him to use the big flashlight next to the box, that will "give him some good light" in order to find the tiger's scroll. Heiji steps in and tells Kasuya not to switch it on, unless he wants to end up just like Kato did. Heiji reveals Wakisaka to be the serial killer who murdered Kato and Katagiri by both setting them alight and having it look like a suicide. Wakisaka, just like with Kasuya, enticed his victims with the tiger's scroll. He told Kato he had hidden the scroll under a tile of the castle's roof. Kato would ceratinly go and look for it by night, when nobody would be around and be able to spot him. Though, he needed some light and used his lighter first, only to find something better than this light: a big flashlight, which had been placed here beforehand by Wakisaka, a very special "bomblight" which exploded as soon as Kato switched it on, setting fire to his woolen jumper, and killing him afterwards. As Kato had placed his lighter on the exact place where the cylindrical lamp was (accounting for the strange shape on the roof, and the charred remains), and actually expected to retrieve it afterwards, the police would then believe Kato had committed suicide, as they would find the lighter with his fingerprints on the roof after his death, just like Wakisaka had planned. The burned battery Conan found was actually the flashlight's.

Later on, Wakisaka had Katagiri wait for him at Gokuraku Bridge to discuss something very important, and had asked her to wear a large coat, and he actually disguised as Katagiri, the large coat concealing most of his man's body, and then he bashed her with a kind of cinder block, and carried her up to the guardrail. There, he dumped her head first into the river, poured gas on her back, and then waited for a witness to come along. Actually, Wakisaka was wearing a fireproof diving suit - covering the whole body up to the head - under "Katagiri's clothes", and when Kazuha and Ran turned up, he set himself alight, knowing he wouldn't get hurt at all, bent over the guardrail and pretended to suffer, dropped his lighter on Katagiri's gased body in the river to set it on fire, and then dived into the river, and quickly swam and hid under the bridge's pillars. Therefore, when the girls would come up, they would only see Katagiri's burning corpse, having allegedly killed herself, and would never imagine there was another person under the bridge. Moreover, Wakisaka had left Katagiri's shoes at the guardrail, to add more realism to her "suicide". Also, people would have thought her head injury was due to hitting the bridge's pillar when falling, and Wakisaka perfectly knew that. His wetsuit allowed him to escape burning but also wetting, since he came directly afterwards to the crime scene without being wet at all. The suit's zipper though got bloodied by Katagiri's, and this accounts for the three marks when he carried her. He then swam again up to a safe place, removed his suit and fake Katagiri's clothes, and put on his right clothes again, and eventually joined the crowd and mingled with it.

Though, Kasuya says Wakisaka probably didn't really mind having witnesses to check Katagiri's suicide after all, since none would walk along the bridge since a murder had taken place previously close to the castle, but Ran's and Kazuha's presence helped him a lot in the end. Yet, Heiji says Wakisaka had also planned for a witness to come : he had called Fukushima to come along the bridge, pretending he was from the police, and that he needed his help to prevent maybe Katagiri from killing herself for instance. Fukushima then ran away after seeing actually things were not as he was told, and the girls believed someone was spying on them and escaped. Heiji and Conan knew it was Fukushima since he immediately said Katagiri had died by setting her alight, while he's supposed not to have listened to Otaki's account of events yet before saying so. Wakisaka needed a witness to confirm suicide, as otherwise people and especially police would have thought a killer had set her ablaze and that she had to leap into the water to put it out. Wakisaka had asked Kato to wear that woolen and nylon jumper and Katagiri to wear that large flammable coat in order to spot them more easily during the tour, but in fact to have them burn more rapidly.

The evidence of the murders are actually the zipper marks : there is some kind of round shape next to the zipper shape, and that round shape is Wakisaka's game badge: there's probably some of Katagiri's blood on it, and it's quite invisible since the badge's colours are very dark - this means Wakisaka didn't zip his suit fully and properly. Wakisaka ripped into Kato, Katagiri, almost Kasuya, and also Hirano: Heiji asked Agasa to search for Hirano's wherebaouts, and he discovered that his website hadn't been updated for three weeks, implying something had happened to him. Indeed, he was burned alive, maybe with the same trick used for Kato or Katagiri, by Wakisaka, very recently, in the castle's outer walls. Hirano was about to meet the tour group after his meeting with Wakisaka, explaining why actually he "didn't come due to a last-minute hitch". Wakisaka confesses to his three murders, along with the fourth attempt, in order to avenge his grandfather Masakiyo's death. Masakiyo was a big fan of Hideyoshi, and he was the one holding the dragon's scroll in the middle of Katagiri's picture, surrounded by Hirano, Kato, Katagiri and another man. Masakiyo had found the dragon's scroll and gathered a team of experts to try and find Hideyoshi's treasure. In the end, he decided to give up and donate the scroll to the National Musuem. He went to Osaka thirteen years ago to try and convince his team to give up with the treasure. Though, not only his comrades refused it but also got in a fume when they discovered Masakiyo had concealed to them the existence of a flask's fragment he thought useless, and they decided to burn him alive in the castle's moat, after stealing his scroll. Wakisaka then searched for his late grandfather's comrades one after the other with only a picture as sole clue, the same picture he put in Katagiri's pocket to probably scare Kasuya when he would see it.

Wakisaka also discovered the unknown man on the picture had completely changed face, name and life during all those years, and Heiji realises this man is Kasuya. It's too late though, as Kasuya suddenly takes aim at Heiji and Wakisaka with a gun, and the gangsters emerge from the dark and also take aim at them, cornering them completely. Kasuya says he had very good reasons to silence Masakiyo, and had actually thought about killing Katagiri as well, as she had discovered who he really was during the trip. Heiji says if they kill Wakisaka they will never be able to get hold of Hideyoshi's treasure. Kasuya answers he knows Wakisaka didn't bring the scroll, and he'll go and search his home afterwards. He orders them to switch on the flashlight, to make the police believe later on that Heiji had come and fought with the murderer, and they ended up perishing in an explosion together. Kasuya allows them a last answer to his question: how did Heiji figure out Wakisaka was the murderer, as neither him nor Kasuya nor Fukushima had valid alibis? Heiji refuses to reply, but actually Conan does, from up far, saying it's the umbrella, Ran's umbrella, that Kato grasped before dying, which stands for Nobunaga's famous golden umbrella, which referred then to Wakisaka, the one who had told him where the scroll supposedly was.

Kasuya orders Conan to quickly get downstairs and if not to witness his friend's death, and while Heiji shouts to Conan never to do it, someone leaps into the void from Conan's storey, and lands just in front of the gangsters : that person is revealed to be Heizo. Heizo shelters his son, and tells Kasuya that even if he changed his whole appearance up to a million times, his despicable voice and rotten heart would never change as to them. Heizo reveals he had set a dragnet beforehand to lure Kasuya and his crooks into enetring the warehouse and to trap them afterwards, and, saying so, dozens of police squads surround them with weapons and lights, and arrest them, saying that they are the bank robbers who murdered so many people and who started thirteen years ago, when Kasuya needed an enormous amount of money to make up for the loss of income and to pay back his huge debt due to investing so much in that useless Hideyoshi's treasure quest at that time. Toyama says they still have, as obvious evidence, Kasuya's voice left on his victims' answerphones before silencing them, and his fingerprints he left here and there on the crime scenes - but he didn't mind since he spent millions in plastic surgery to change faces constantly. Heizo yells at them to surrender now, without putting up any resistance. And the squad launches assault, ending a long-lasting case with a spectatcular and to-be-remembered arrest. Otaki was the one who had abducted Conan, in order to shelter him away from danger.

In the police van, it is revealed that Wakisaka's grandfather or Wakiska himself had actually found the tiger's scroll, and Wakisaka lured his victims with it, sending a piece of earthenware to each of them to attract them all - then his grandfather had found a flask as well. He is the one who attracted Kasuya in the warehouse with another piece. It is therefore undertsood that Wakisaka was tracking Kasuya after the birdge case and Conan and Heiji were actually chasing Wakisaka and not Kasuya, rather wanting ot protect Kasuya from Wakisaka, and anyway they were completely ignorant of Kasuya being the last person of the picture, and being the gang leader. Kasuya blames Wakisaka for being so stupid since now he won't inherit a single penny from Hideyoshi's treasure. However, Wakisaka answers that the tiger's scroll wasn't a map but an Alexandrine written by Kajisuke: "The dragon's scroll is well worth those thousand items". Kajisuke is actually a famous Edo-era thief who constantly tried to steal Hideyoshi's gold in his castle's wells, which means actually Kajisuke stole all of Hideyoshi's treasure, becoming rich and changing his name. Masakiyo said nothing to his comrades because they were all so obsessed with it, and they had put so much money in it.

Later on, Heiji gets incensed at his father's actual plan to use him as a bait to lure Kasuya and Wakisaka. He deliberately beat up his son in order to prompt it to lose his temper and track down the two culprits, who wouldn't be suspicious of a teenage kid and a seven-year-old following them, and they would never imagine the good haul that was being prepared by Heizo. Toyama had actually told Otaki about Kasuya, and had especially told him to track him down but also not to let Heiji know a single thing about it, and also to have Heiji floowed bypolice as well, just in case. Heizo also said this was a risky plan though as Kasuya had told his crooks to come along to retrieve the 1000 flasks. Heizo knew that Wakisaka was the criminal given the umbrella thing he deduced as well. Heiji can't hold back his anger, and he's probably the one responsible for Heizo's ear injury, who is being treated by Shizuka later on.</spoiler>

Kogoro Mouri gets an invitation for an engagement party from his favorite idol, Yoko Okino. Kaoru is the one who is getting engaged is another star and a former member of a group they all used to be in. She is a fan of Kogoro Mouri and wanted him to find out who was stalking her. Kaoru decides to take a bath. And the rest of the girl group decide to dress up and sing their old song to surprise her. Conan discovers blood leading to the door and they find her attacked. Bloody clothes are found outside which were made to make it seem like it was Kaoru's stalker but really is someone at the party.
+
Kogoro neglects his duties as a detective and instead fanatically sings along to Yoko Okino's television performance, much to Ran's irritation. She sifts through her father's outstanding mail and discovers a letter from Yoko herself, immediately catching Kogoro's attention. Ran reads the letter's contents which describe an engagement party at a friend's apartment. She turns to Kogoro to confirm his attendance only to find him in a catatonic state, believing the letter refers to Yoko's engagement.<br>

+
On the day of the party, Kogoro, Ran, and Conan meet Yoko in the apartment parking lot. The group is joined by Osamu Kenzaki, the famous actor who plays the beloved Detective Samonji character. He reveals himself as the groom of the soon-to-be bride and expresses his amazement in Kogoro's presence. Yoko says she kept Kogoro's attendance a secret from her friend, wishing for him to be a surprise.<br>
File 323 - The Secret of the Idols
The group ascends the floors and arrives at the apartment. However, despite repeatedly ringing the doorbell, they get no response. Kogoro finds the door open and slowly peaks into the room, only to find the tenant, Kaoru Kusano, standing at the doorway wielding a tennis racket. She accuses him of stalking before smashing the racket over his head.<br>

+
The group laughs about the misapprehension, and Kaoru confesses she has lately been dealing with stalker-related harassment. She then holds Kenzaki's arm and reports the two actors are engaged, eliciting applause from the attendees. Two additional actress, Yuki Takeno and Terumi Hoshino, join the party, officially marking the reunion of the "Earth Ladies," much to Kogoro's pleasure. Kaoru's manager, Atsushi Makuma, then enters from the living room and notifies everyone about the imminent Detective Samonji broadcast. Despite being the party's primary event, Kaoru expresses her disinterest, stating she will take a bath. Makuma demurs to her decision, causing the actress to snap at her manager, belittling him. As Kaoru storms off, Yuki and Yoko remark on their plan's success. With the bride momentarily out of the picture, the three actresses change into their former Earth Lady outfits and pass around a paper board for each attendee to sign. Terumi writes her condolences and leaves a cigarette stain, while Yuki wishes her congratulations and leaves a kiss mark. The women hand the board to Makuma, who tearfully writes his message before solemnly heading to the bathroom to call Kaoru. <br>
Megure searches everyone for the murder weapon but it isn't found. Though they discover a listening device and find drawers tampered with.
+
However, Makuma soon returns to the living room, reporting that Kaoru did not respond to his calls. Concerned, the group sends Kenzaki to check on his fiancé. Conan follows the actor and notices a small trail of blood leading to the apartment entrance. Sensing danger, he quickly yells for Kenzaki to open the bathroom door. The two react in shock as they see Kaoru's limp body through the steamy haze, her throat slit and blood trickling to the floor.

Conan checks Kaoru's vitals and determines she can survive if she is immediately transferred to a hospital's care. Kenzaki hesitates for a moment before grabbing a towel to help pull her out of the water. The rest of the attendees arrive, having been alerted by Kenzaki's voice. Makuma, in particular, is deeply upset by the situation and jumps into the bathtub to save his client. <br>
 +
Later that night, the police, led by Inspector Megure and Takagi, arrive at the apartment. Their knock on the door is answered by the Earth Ladies, still dressed in their outfits. Megure assumes he approached the wrong apartment unit and apologizes, but stands corrected after Kogoro calls out to him. <br>
 +
With no word from the hospital, Yoko begins to worry about her friend's condition, prompting Terumi and Yuki to contact Makuma who accompanied Kaoru. Meanwhile, Megure processes the accounts given by each attendee and begins to suspect the culprit is amongst the celebrities present. Conan reminds him of the items discovered outside the apartment entrance: a rain poncho, a pair of gloves, a bottle of eye medicine, and a handkerchief. Kenzaki floats the possibility of an external threat, pointing to a stalker who had been harassing Kaoru by ringing her doorbell and leaving disturbing notes. Conan, however, says if the stalker is to blame, then they must be a cautious individual. He explains that one would naturally step on the blood trail left by their dripping rain poncho, leaving smear marks on the ground. Yet, in this case, no such marks appear. Building on Conan's information, Takagi and Terumi deduce the culprit attempted to misdirect the investigation, and is indeed one of the party attendees. Terumi also suggests the police search for the weapon, as its discovery would prove instrumental in uncovering the truth. Takagi commends her knowledge on detective work. She replies it is because of her interest in mystery stories—an interest she grew due to a certain influence.<br>
 +
As the search for the weapon commences, Conan approaches Yoko and inquires about her friends' previous roles. She explains that Yuki formerly played a reoccurring character on the Detective Samonji show, but had to step down from her role after her father fell ill. Both Kaoru and Terumi auditioned to fill the role, with the role eventually going to Kaoru after Makuma's impressive campaigning. She adds that despite Kaoru's ostensibly callous demeanor towards Makuma, she cares for him, even stating she believes him to be a capable actor who simply lacked the willpower to see his dreams through.<br>
 +
Takagi reports that all of the suspects were empty handed, and that the weapon continues to elude them. The possibility of an outside stalker grows after an officer discovers a listening device hidden inside one of Kaoru's stuffed animals. Believing the stalker may have taken a token with them, Conan examines Kaoru's bedroom. He finds a photograph depicting Kaoru and Makuma happily together in the snow. Terumi interrupts the boy's confusion and scolds him for invading her friend's privacy. She leaves the signed paper board on the drawer before leaving the room. Conan inspects the board closely and comes to a realization, having successfully unraveled the mystery.

The apartment landline begins to ring, and Yoko tensely takes the phone to her ear. Tears roll down her cheeks as her friends assume the worst. However, Yoko turns around and reveals her tears to be of joy, stating Kaoru's surgery was a success. Collective relief suffuses the air and everyone rejoices, all except for one.

The hospital calls and informs them that Kaoru's surgery went well. Meanwhile, Conan confronts the culprit, Yuki Takeno, Yuki used her sharp filed nail as a weapon and used a fake nail to cover it. She then bit it and spat it out into the sink. She had chloroformed Kaoru beforehand, tried to kill her, and then left fake blood splatters in front of the door, and threw the bloody raincoat outside the apartment, to make it believe she had been attacked by the stalker.

She asks how he can be so sure, stating the police are yet to have discovered the weapon. Conan points to her fingers, which are topped with long, beautiful acrylic nails. Specifically, he points to her sharp, elongated, true nail which had lied hidden under her acrylic enhancements. By using her thumb nail like a knife, Yuki could easily dispose of the weapon by clipping it off and reinstalling the acrylic nail. Conan adds that Yuki likely wore the rain poncho and gloves (with a hole at the tip of the thumb) to mitigate blood residue from staining her clothes, and subsequently threw the items into the apartment hallway to make Kaoru's attack appear like the work of a stalker. Additionally, it was Yuki who had been harassing Kaoru, birthing the idea of a malicious external entity who wished harm upon her.<br>
Her motive is that she has a crush on Kenzaki and she thought that the fake engagement was just Kaoru playing prank on her emotion. She attempted to commit suicide to pay for her crime of trying to kill Kaoru with hypoglycemic drug (since her dad's got diabetes), but Conan saved her life using sugar sticks. When Yuki woke up in the hospital Kaoru said that she testified wrongly to cover for Yuki and felt sorry that she wasn't aware of Yuki's crush on Kenzaki. Kaoru revealed that the rumor of the engagement was to get her manager Atsushi Makuma to have enough courage to confess her and later they become engaged (Kaoru wants to get married at age 20 like Yukiko Kudo).
+
Yuki then slams her fist agains the kitchen counter and clutches her head, exhibiting great fatigue. She asks Conan about the tool she used to clip her fingernail, saying no such tool was found either. Conan explains that she must have used her teeth to bite her nail into small fragments. As evidence, Conan shows her the paper board, pointing to a relatively dark portion of Yuki's kiss mark. He says the discoloration is created from Kaoru's blood which had stained her lips.<br>

The Motive:<br>
It is later revealed that Terumi has idolized Shinichi.
+
Yuki, now exhausted to the point of collapse, voices her regrets. She says she had fallen in love with Kenzaki during their time as Detective Samonji co-stars. However, after asking Kaoru about her engagement to Kenzaki, she said she viewed it as a mere means of publicity. Before passing out, Yuki says she was unable to commit to her murder after seeing her friend's innocent face, and she expresses her sincere relief about Kaoru's survival.<br>

Conan intently watches as he realizes the woman had spiked her own glass with a drug. Based on her symptoms, he deduces she took a hypoglycemic pill. Knowing she had acted on an enormous misapprehension, he vows to keep her alive. <br>
 +
Sometime later, Yuki wakes up in a hospital bed surrounded by Kaoru and Yoko. Overjoyed, Yoko rushes to contact Terumi about her recovery, leaving her alone with her victim. As Yuki attempts to express her apologies, Kaoru interrupts, saying she lied to the police about her attacker, describing them as a "short and overweight old woman." She adds that she interprets her wound as punishment for pulling her friends' emotional strings for her own amusement. She explains that her engagement party with Kenzaki was a lie, a plan she orchestrated to convince her true love to confess his feelings to her. She then shows Yuki the front page of the a celebrity tabloid reporting her and Makuma's engagement. Yuki is shocked by the revelation, primarily because of Makuma's shy personality. Kaoru then asks about her plan with Kenzaki, urging her to confess her feelings to him before Terumi does—seen as she is interested in "detectives." Yuki denies the notion, revealing that Terumi had rejected Kenzaki in the past. Kaoru, confused, wonders who could be the source of Terumi's fascination.

Meanwhile, Conan, Ran, and Kogoro watch Terumi's performance on the television. Ran comments that her character speaks like a detective rather than a shogi player; Kogoro agrees. Conan considers the unlikely, but dismisses the idea.

Conan, Ai, Professor Agasa, and the Detective Boys are enjoying the animal show at the place called the "Animal show with Paul & Annie". After the show, Ayumi says she and Ai bought a "Leon the White Lion" keychain. As Conan seems to look down on Ai for liking that kind of things, she ironically replies it's always better than spending one's days smelling the scent of blood during mysterious murder mysteries. They notice Randy Hawk, the show's sponsor, is being interviewed. Hawk is an American businessman from Oklahoma who started to buy animals and create a show after making a fortune in oil industry. He passed his passion down on his children Paul and Annie, and since then he's been travelling the whole world with his famous animal show. He said in a previous interview that he is a cow-boy and cow-boys know how to defend themselves, and don't need any bodyguards then. Agasa notes Hawk speaks Japanese very well. "Hawk" though keeps telling the reporters he's not Randy Hawk, that's a misunderstanding. Yet, they keep harassing him with questions such as why he came back to Japan after a three-year absence, why he donated half of the show's takings to zoos, etc. So much that "Hawk" shouts "Can you give me a break !!", and Conan notices something strange. Agasa says it's odd cow-boys easily lose their temper, and Ai comments on the fact that it serves him right since he comes here alone and without bodyguards, and tries to hide himself, then no wonder this occurs. Conan rather says they should give him a hand rather than laying it on thick, they should rescue the cowboy's princess, surrounded by cows and about to pass away.
+
Professor Agasa and the Detective Boys enjoy a spectacular circus performance called "The Animal Show with Paul & Annie." <br>
 +
After the show, Genta notices a foreigner being aggressively interviewed by the press. Agasa identifies him as Randy Hawk, the circus' owner from Oklahoma. Despite the man's insistence about a case of mistaken identity, the reporters continue to pressure him with questions, causing the to man to snap in anger. Noticing his British accent, Conan realizes he is not Randy Hawk and quickly comes up with a rescue plan. He approaches the crowd and calls the man "Thomas," claiming he is Agasa's close friend. With the Detective Boys' assistance, they manage to take advantage of the confusion and successfully drag the man to safety.<br>
 +
The foreign man thanks the children for their help and mentions that he came to Japan because he adores Hawk's show, having purchased a limited edition white lion keychain. Ayumi happily exclaims that her and Haibara bought the same keychain, eliciting a smile from the man. Still, the man regrets the press-related fiasco, having missed an important meeting with an associate with long hair. The man then introduces himself as James Black, and takes an interest in the children's Detective Badges, which depicts the famous Sherlock Holmes. He explains he was born in London and declares the Detective Boys equivalent to the Baker Street Irregulars. He offers to take the group to a favorite restaurant of his, which excites the children. Seen as Agasa's Beetle lacks the capacity for seven passengers, James goes to retrieve his car. While leaving, he remarks about being unacclimated to the left-sided steering wheel, which Conan says is evidence that he currently does not live in the United Kingdom. James confirms, stating he lives in Chicago, "the windy city where Capone stormed..." As the man walks away, Haibara discreetly mentions to Conan about sensing something strange about James.<br>
 +
At the parking lot, a silhouette observes James pay his parking fee and open his car door. Before he can enter, he is interrupted by two police officers, who inform him that the rented car he is driving was recently stolen. The officers take him across the street to a police car for questioning. James cooperates but asks if he can inform the Detective Boys about his situation. However, in a sudden turn of events, the officers draw their guns and force him into their vehicle. The false officers explain their plan to extort money from James, whom they have mistaken for Randy Hawk. The car drives off, leaving James' white lion keychain left on the road. <br>
 +
The Detective Boys grow increasingly worried as they approach forty minutes of waiting. Leaving Agasa at the street, the children rush off to investigate the parking lot. Mitsuhiko immediately identifies James' car after seeing a white lion plushie presented behind the car's windshield. The Detective Boys are then approached by several child witnesses who inform them about James' escort. Conan rushes across the street and finds James's keychain with bloodstains covering the characters "P," "&," and "A" of "Paul & Annie." He quickly deduces that it must be a message that James had left behind.

Saying so, Conan comes forward and tells everyone "Hawk" is Professor Thomas, their friend they had been searching for so long, an English teacher moreover. Conan pulls him aside, and once they're out, the person thanks them a lot and says it's the first time he has been misunderstood that far, since he's aware of his likeness with Hawk. He says he loves P&A show and came to Japan on prupose to buy a made-in-Japan Leon keychain. He adds due to that problem he missed his appointment with his long-haired friend at the exit. Conan explains he deduced that man wasn't Randy Hawk since the way he said "can" was typically British, and not at all American, especially Southern American. Hawk has a very thick Texan accent, and besides he clearly hasn't the same face features as that man. Conan tells him Japanese can't make the difference between two Europeans, and James bends closer to Conan to congratulate him for being so perceptive of things. The man introduces himself as James Black, and Conan says he's Conan Edogawa, a detective. The kids come closer as well and say they are the Detective Boys, and Ayumi shows him her badge, on which he obviously recognises Sherlock Holmes. And then, James says they're the Baker Street Irregulars, Baker Street's children who often help Holmes in the novels. James reveals he was actually born in Baker Street, and he decides to treat his Baker Street friends to a nice dinner in a fine restaurant.

The kidnappers gloat about their plan, believing they will receive millions in ransom money from Hawk's family. James reiterates that his captives are under a misapprehension, but his words fall on deaf ears. Coerced into silence, he calmly sits, seemingly unworried about his predicament and looking forward to a different "thrill."<br>
Agasa says he's only got five seats in his car, therefore James has to go and fetch his crossover car parked not far away. Though, he emphasizes that Agasa should drive it since he's not very familiar with left driving. Conan remarks however he should, given he's British, but James said he was born in England but raised in Chicago, Al Capone's city, in America, where they drive on the right. Ai has a strange feeling with James but Conan says he doesn't feel anything particular in him, and she is comforted afterwards. While James walks towards the car park, an unknown person is observing him from far, and phoning. As James opens his car's door, two police officers inetrrupt him and ask him to follow them, since his car is a stolen one, and they want to know the exact circumstances during which James rented it. They ask him to come to their police car, saying it won't be long, though James says he needs first to inform his friends that he might be late. The "policeman" then points a gun at him and violently kicks him into the car, and James drops his keychain on the ground. He says he cut his finger due to the blow's violence, and when he tells them he has the feeling they're not police agents, they tell "that upstart cowboy" to shut up.
+
Meanwhile, Genta and Mitsuhiko desperately attempt to persuade two police officers into launching a coordinated search for James. Conan and Haibara worry about his fate, as they take notice of a live radio broadcast featuring Randy Hawk's circus performance.<br>

+
The kidnappers also notice the broadcast and are sent spiraling into panic and confusion. One kidnapper suggests killing James immediately, but another reprimands him for being hot-headed, suggesting they follow their original plan of executing him in the mountains of Gunma and burying his body. <br>
James says it's another misunderstanding, he's not Hawk, but they say they'll have him share his enormous wealth a little with them. The two crooks then tell their driver, an accomplice, to start up and leave. Meanwhile, Agasa's group wonder at James's absence for about 40 minutes now, and they look for him in the close-by car parks. They eventually spot his car but find it strange he left his keys into his open car's door lock. They can't find him until three kids who were playing around tell them a mustached foreigner went with two other men in that direction. They follow it but find nothing except the keychain. The DBs believe James eventually left in another car to meet his friend. But Conan denies it since there is blood on the keychain, James's own blood he deliberately left (when he "cut himself") on the "P" "&" "A" of "Paul & Annie" in order to convey a message and tell them what happened to him, when they would find the chain. Then he was involved in an unexpected and dangerous case. They're about to call the police and Conan wonders what the meaning of the message is. In the car, James seems calm and composed, unscared, sucking his finger, with a dark look on his face.
+
Back at the sidewalk, the police officers fail to grasp the severity of the situation and take their leave. Seeing they cannot depend on the police, the Detective Boys try to decipher James' code, but are unsuccessful. Conan switches to a different plan and directs his friends to split up, spread the word, and question pedestrians—using their badges to communicate findings. Ayumi notices her badge is missing and realizes that James forgot to return the gadget to her. Conan employs his glasses and manages to pinpoint the badges exact location. He determines that James is on a car heading towards Saitama along the Teimuzu river, and calls Takagi, asking for him to set a inspection checkpoint on the prefectural border. Despite the sergeant's qualms, Sato recalls that Yumi is currently administering an accident response in the area, and agrees to pass the information onto her. She also agrees to involve herself and Takagi after hearing the culprits may be armed.<br>

+
With the authorities now properly in action, Conan instructs Agasa to ready the Beetle. Haibara, on the hand, remains hesitant about the situation. Based on the sophistication of the message left behind, she deduces that James must have cut his finger and marked the letters during his escort—meaning he may have willingly accompanied the hostiles to the car. Haibara suddenly senses immense danger and spins around, just as Shuichi Akai drives by while intently observing the Detective Boys. She anxiously asks Conan if he saw the driver's face, but the boy answers in the negative.<br>
File 326 - P & A
At the traffic accident, Yumi inspects each car, looking for the foreigner Sato had described to her. A hand emerges from one of the car windows and one of the fake police officers calls for Yumi. He points to a hooded James and says his team must carry out an after-action report with the apprehended suspect before the sun sets. Yumi, not wanting to hamper her fellow police officer, allows the car to pass inspection.<br>

+
The Detective Boys arrive at the checkpoint and are shocked to hear Yumi report that she saw not one foreigner. Stumped, the group redirects their attention back to James' message, each member floating their own ridiculous suggestion about what the "A" and "P" could represent. Ayumi's ludicrous suggestion, "Pelican" and "Ashika (sea lion)," however, catches Conan's attention and helps him crack the code.<br>
The crooks brag about their "good catch" and say they'll get millions as ransom in exchange for his release. They thank the fake police car's driver, dressed in a police agent's uniform, telling him he had a brilliant idea. They also mock "Hawk"'s getting around wihtout any bodyguards. James says they're completely mistaken, and when giving his name, the abductors believe he's from the British intelligence, thinking about James Bond. Though, they say it's not so important, and they order him to behave himself or else they'll get angrier. They tell "007" to watch how they'll easily extort money from his children, but James thinks to himself he is actually less interested in observing them than in observing how another person will behave and act. Agasa and the DBs hardly manage to have police agents believe James was abducted, since they didn't really see him being kidnapped, and none in the neighbourhood noticed anything, and it's hard indeed to find a specific old mustached foreigner, as there are many fitting that description. Ayumi shows the policeman a picture of Randy Hawk, saying James and him look alike. The policeman replies Hawk is currently being interviewed on the radio. Conan suddenly takes fright at the thought that James could be silenced by the crooks if the latter ever found out Hawk is actually on the radio, and that they did a big mistake.
+
Meanwhile, more than eight kilometers from Conan's position, James sees a black Chevrolet pickup truck driven by Akai in the rear view mirror. He gives a confident smirk.

Unfortunately, the crooks' driver turns on the radio and they are very negatively surprised to hear the businessman. One of the abductors gets angry and threatens to shoot James down straight away, but his sidekick orders him not to do it, since he would then have to wander around Tokyo with a bloody corpse on his shoulders. He rather suggests they drive as planned to Gunma mountains where they'll eliminate and bury the wrong Hawk, and afterwards they'll go back to Tokyo to really abduct Randy. None will ever expect nor discover who they really are and what they are planning to do, and when they will, the crooks will have been very far away now. The police agents agree to take the keychain to the station to analyse it, and especially James's blood, and they promise to investigate the kidnapping. As they leave, Agasa and the DBs try to figure out the meaning of P&A : is it "PA" ? Is it pistol and assassin ? PC and Access ? Parking Area ? Conan answers to that idea, saying he actually went near James's car in order to investigate, but found nothing at all. They decide to go and ask the neighbours about what they could have seen, each of them going in their own direction, and informing the others with their badges when they have found a nice clue. But suddenly, Ayumi is reminded when she gave her badge to James and he didn't give it back to her, and Conan takes advantage of this opportunity, locating it with his glasses.

He eventually finds out James is in a car which is going northwards-westwards on Ikumo Road 16 kilometers away. Conan decides to call Takagi, and asks him to settle roadblocks on Ikumo Road before Saitama Department, but Takagi says he can't implement such a presence as that information isn't checked, even if it seems dangerous. Sato overhears their conversation and quickly grabs the phone from her colleague's hands, saying she can ask Yumi to keep a close eye on cars there, since the latter had been sent to Ikumo Road to help with traffic due to a recent accident. Sato records Conan's description of James in front of an astounded Takagi, and she promises she'll phone Yumi as soon as possible. She adds she'll also go there with Takagi, given they are free at the moment, and Sato believes in Conan when he tells her they are dangerous abductors. Conan then tells Agasa they'll go to Ikumo as well with his Beetle to give Yumi a hand. Ai tells Conan she's intrigued by how the case all started : she finds it hard to believe that James was taken by two men from his car up to another car, through the alley, and that he deliberately left a blood message once in this alley to warn them. She thinks it far too complicated for such a mere old man, but Conan replies he was probably threatened with firearms when on the car park, and he tried to find a few seconds once in the dark alley to discreetly leave a message to anyone. Though, Ai still believes James knew the men were fishy from the beginning, and therefore he had well enough time to think about that plan. Then, he could have decided to follow them of his own free will, and to leave that kind of message just before, expecting the DBS and Agasa to find out the truth. Conan doesn't get it, and Ai says someone seems to be trying to lure them into a trap. As she says so, a big American pickup drives past the group, with Shuichi Akai in it (Vol. 29), discreetly glaring at them. Ai turns around panic-stricken, asking Conan if he saw who was in the car, to which he answers he didn't, and Ai feels comforted then.

At Ikumo, Yumi peeps into the cars one after the other, and suddenly she is hailed by the abductors, who ask her to grant them permission to leave before everyone else, since they have a rather urgent case to settle, with a "man who raised hell at his mistress's", hidden under a blanket, being secretly targeted by one of the crooks' gun, and moreover they have an inspection to carry out quickly before the night. Yumi agrees to free the way for them only, and resumes her search. Conan and co turn up and can't believe Yumi didn't find the abductors neither James. Conan wonders how they made it through the police's without being spotted. He says the car is still 8kms ahead from them, yet his transmitter-receiver is almost dead. Genta suggests they should call the badge, but Ai says it's a very bad idea : the kidnappers may get angrier and either kill James or hurt him very badly, along with destroying the badge, their only chance to ever find James. Yumi thinks P&A could refer to where they are going, and everyone starts thinking again about the message, with Ai's gallows-humoured suggestion that it could be Peritonitis & Apoplexy, then a hospital... Ayumi also makes a guess and says it has to do with animals : Pelican & Antelope, since James loves the animal show. Conan deduces something from her guess, and eventually congratulates her for helping him to find out the truth. Meanwhile, in the fake police car, James sees through the rear-view mirror Shuichi Akai's pickup following them closely, and he smirks mysteriously.

Conan tells Yumi that the kidnappers are driving a police car, shocking the officer. Sato and Takagi also arrive at the scene just in time for Conan to present his deduction.

<spoiler>

<spoiler>
Conan reveals the offenders drive a police car, which is why they manage to go through any obstacles. They may succeed in escaping if the police don't do something quickly. Takagi and Sato turn up and Conan explains P&A means "Panda", just like the name given to British police cars in 1965 in Lancaster. Indeed, pandas, Japanese police cars and older British police cars have one thing in common : their black and white color. Sato says there are indeed people who know police cars' nicknames, though it's strange such a simple British American foreigner as James knows about this police jargon. Moreover, white cars with black tyres, bumpers and others can also be called pandas. Conan answers James knows about the panda designation since he was born in London long ago, when London police cars were still black and white, and got to be called pandas in 1965 in Lancaster, then most British grown-ups and elderly people probably know it. Takagi secretly wonders how such a young kid as Conan can know about it. Yumi remembers the police car with a strange hidden person inside, that she allowed to drive past the roadblock. Meanwhile, the abductors gloat over their without-a-hitch plan, as they'll soon reach Gunma without anyone noticing it. Though, one of the crooks find it strange Yumi was peeping into the cars one after the other, since she was supposedly here to help with the traffic. They start believing the police is actually already aware of their plans. But even if it's the case, they have a hostage and they'll shoot him down if any roadblock is settled again, and they'll force their way through. Behind them, Akai, in his car, is looking daggers at them.
+
Conan first converts the ampersand into its alphabet letters "and." He then strings the characters "P," "AND," and "A" together to form the word "PANDA." Therefore, James is being transported in a vehicle which shares the panda's coloration: a police car. Sato doubts the connection, saying there are many black and white non-police vehicles on the street. Conan explains that the iconic panda palette police car originated in Lancashire's department around 1965, where it was known as the "panda car" in common vernacular. While the term's usage is declining, James would likely be familiar with the phrase since he is of the older generation.

+
</spoiler>
Sato and Takagi start tracking down the abductors, and, in the car, Takagi comments about their doing too much, since they're not in their police department any longer, and they've already asked Saitama for a roadblock to be settled, then it's useless they're here. Miwako replies she's afraid at one or two things : Yumi already peeped into their car, and they might have found out the police is after them. Which means if another roadblock is ever settled, they might use their hostage as a shield. And since the "strange hidden guy" didn't move an inch when Yumi looked at him, that means the culprits are most probably armed. They must be very tense : if any problem occurs, they'll fire into the crowd and spread panic everywhere in the street. Sato says in order to avoid it at all costs they must try and arrest them without their notice, though it verges more on the miraculous than anything else. Conan, who had purposedly left his badge in Sato's car, says it's less impossible than they think. He adds Agasa's car is 500 meters behind the abductors', and he explains he has a very special, stupid but eventually successful plan to stop the culprits. Though, they need a number of policemen for it to run perfectly well. Yumi, following Sato's car, feels guilty for having allowed the abductors to escape, and suddenly Sato calls her and asks her to get in touch with some of the Saitama police officers she went out with at night some time ago, as quick as possible.
+
In the fake police car, one of the men voices his concerns about Yumi inspection, and questions whether their kidnapping is being actively investigated or not. The men ready their guns, prepared to shoot their way through any additional police interference. <br>

+
Yumi recalls the one police car she let through the checkpoint and realizes James was the hooded man the officers were transporting. Sato speeds off in pursuit. Believing the kidnappers will turn violent if contacted again, she desperately thinks of a way to contain the culprits while mitigating collateral damage. She suddenly hears Conan's voice from a Detective Badge left on her car seat. The boy presents a possible solution. <br>
The fake police driver gets angry at being compelled to stop constantly due to red lights (probably a police tactics), and his sidekick tells him not to worry : soon it will be night and they'll be able to vanish into thin air. Suddenly, Akai's car pulls over very close to theirs, and Akai gives a sordid and killing look at the driver, which completely freezes the latter. Suddenly, one of the crooks spots Sato's police car with its rotating light behind them, and Akai drives past the crooks, and then the driver emerges from his panic-stricken state and obeys his sidekick's order to speed up given they've been found. Agasa's car suddenly rushes past them and the DBs cry out to them, pretending they're children that were abducted by a mad driver, and asking the "police" to rescue them. Sato's car pulls over close to the abductors', and Takagi shouts at them to come and rush after them in order to rescue the "abducted children". One of the offenders tells the driver to do as he said and follow him in a first phase, but then to turn left as soon as possible and drive away. Conan comments on his plan working perfectly, yet he suddenly takes fright at Akai's car coming closer to theirs, and he tries to divert Ai's attention. Akai notices Conan and Ai, and eventually slows down not to be spotted. Ai however notes Conan's puzzlement and staring at something through the window.

The kidnappers begin to feel a worsening trepidation as they are stopped by yet another traffic light. Akai's chevrolet pulls into the lane beside the police car. The fake officer notices a horrifying presence next to him and sees Akai giving him a menacing stare. The light turns green the black vehicle drives off, followed swiftly by Agasa's yellow beetle. Genta pokes his head out of the window and calls for the police car's help, exclaiming that he has been kidnapped. Takagi calls out to the police car and enlists the fake officers' help in apprehending the beetle. The officers oblige, intending to feign cooperation before splitting off during the commotion. The police car attempts to turn into an off-road on their right but are blocked by Yumi, who yells at them to speed ahead. They attempt to take an exit to their left, but are blocked by another police car. Soon, they realize they are surrounded by Sato, Takagi, Yumi, and the Saitama Prefectural Police. James smiles, internally reflecting on the Conan's tactical masterclass, calling him "Cool Guy." <br>

+
With the kidnappers arrested, Yumi discusses plans for a future group date with the officers from Saitama. However, after observing their interests lie solely on Sato's attendance, she rolls her eyes in annoyance. Sato asks about James' whereabouts, as he has seemingly disappeared from the scene. Haibara comments on his suspiciousness, but Conan remains confident in his good character. He does, however, have misgivings about his name "James Black," commenting that he shares his first name with Holmes' nemesis, James Moriarty. On the other hand, Conan internally considers Akai's suspicious presence, having recognized him as a fellow bus passenger during the hijacking.<br>
As the abductors' car tries to turn left, they are hampered by Yumi's car, telling them to move their ass or else they'll lose sight of the children. The driver is then told to turn right but there's actually another police car greeting them and encouraging them to carry on the chase. He can't even slow down and turn around since there's another police car just behind, and Takagi's car is just in front. As they wonder what the heck is happening, they realise they're being completely cornered by 6 police cars. James secretly comments on the Irregulars' brightness, or rather on Holmes'. The crooks get scared and threaten to force their way through with the hostage. Though, James thinks to himself it's a dead end and the game is over : Sato will soon give the signal for every police car to brake abruptly at the same time, forcing the fake police car to brake abruptly as well, and all three culprits will be hurled against the dashboard and seats, and James will find himself hurled in between the front seats. The culprits will quickly snap out of it, but they'll realise too late James remained lying between the seats and they can't shoot him down straight away, and all of a sudden they'll all be cornered by armed policemen, forcing them to surrender. This eventually happens, and James comments on "Cool Guy"'s plan being rather harsh, but very clever and effective in the end, and, saying so, he thinks about Conan. The culprits are arrested and Yumi thanks her police friends a lot for their cooperation. She then goes on talking about this and that, but she is cut by Miwako, who wonders where James has been, since he is missing.
+
Meanwhile, James, who has joined Akai in his truck, discusses his kidnapping. James says he deduced the police officers were fake after they spoke to him in Japanese, indicating they were aware of his identity prior to approaching him. He then comments on Akai's hair, saying it used to be long. Akai responds that he had it cut to end his misfortune, mentioning that his "lover" has since broken up with him. James asks if their relationship is mendable. Akai confidently answers affirmatively, wishing for his lover to cry tears of regret, tears of blood.

Ai comments on the fact that James is indeed a very fishy person since he vanished without further ado. Conan says he's not intrigued by James at all, if it isn't by his name : James Black. Ai believes he's making a connection with the Black Orgnisation, but actually Conan was thinking of Professor James Moriarty, Holmes's archenemy, nicknamed the Napoleon of Crime. Though, he says James may actually well be a very common name, and he's just being too obsessed by Holmes. Nevertheless, Conan secretly thinks about that guy with such a seedy look that he saw spying on them twice and following them closely afterwards, that Shuichi Akai from the Bus Hijacking Case. Conan keeps it secret to Ai for now.

Meanwhile, Shuichi Akai and James are chatting in the pickup, saying no wonder "he" deduced the message's meaning despite it being very obscure. James tells Akai he figured out from the very beginning that they were fake police agents, since they spoke in Japanese to him without even asking his ID card or if he speaks and understands that language. He knew they were looking for Hawk, but he was the wrong person, and he probably knew he would be saved very quickly. Though, James was very surprised : he didn't expect at all Akai to having cut his long hair. Akai lights a cigarette and explains it's to commemorate his girlfriend's dumping him recently, in order to have a radical change in his life. James puts his glasses on again - the right lens is tinted - and asks in a frightening way if he asked him to come along precisely to help him getting back together with her. Akai says it's more or less the case : he wants to have her bitterly regret dropping him, so much that she'll cry tears of blood in the end.

It's unclear though whom/what they are actually talking about.

Sato's mother laments that her daughter is spending her day off lying lazily in the living room, after getting up at noon, eating mandarins and watching sports on TV, while this is not a behaviour that suits an important police officer. Instead, she suggests Sato should have a look at the pile of pictures her mother places in front of her, and Sato gets it that here we go again with the Omiai (arranged meeting and/or marriage in Japan) discussion, and as usual she has to force herself to get stuck with all the pictures of potential husbands. She first refuses to do it, explaining she sees enough pictures of corpses as part of her job, but her mother starts crying and tries to have her do it, saying she's been feeling so alone since Sato's father died in action. Miwako then accepts to only meet that person, and she flings a picture at random at her mother with her toes. Mrs. Sato opens the folder and when seeing the picture, she feels overjoyed, saying Miwako is indeed her daughter, given they have the exact same likes.
+
Sato lounges about her room, watching television and eating food, much to her mother's exasperation. Wishing for her daughter to find a husband soon, she presents her with a stack of files listing various omiai (a Japanese matchmaking event) options. Sato expresses her indifference, forcing her mother to feign sadness, even invoking Masayoshi's name. Her theatrics impels Sato into choosing a random file from the stack and handing it to her mother. She inspects the folder and greatly approves of the choice, piquing Sato's curiosity.<br>

+
A few days later at the omiai, Sato states her frustrations, commenting that her match is ten minutes late. As the woman stands to leave, an old, skinny man quietly opens the door and introduces himself as Isokichi Kamoi. Sato is horrified, believing he is her match. Her mother assures her that he is merely a butler. Kamoi confirms, adding that he will sit in the place of his client's parents. His client, Sato's match, then enters the room, revealing himself to be Ninzaburo Shiratori. Sato reacts in shock, dumbfounded by the outcome's likelihood. <br>
Meeting them in the street, Yumi tells Ran, Sonoko and Conan about Sato's doing a Omiai and being, at the moment, at the Japanese restaurant in order to meet her "future husband". Conan and the girls can't understand she chose a picture at random. Though, it's really unlikely any men, except unexperienced or serious ones, would accept dating a policewoman, spending most of her time on crime scenes. Yumi says not even Takagi is aware she's doing a Omiai, since all men at the police's are crazy about her, and she didn't want to wreak havoc nor shame herself by revealing it, and anyway she won't say yes to marriage. Moreover, there's absolutely no chance at all she will have to answer a proposal, since actually Yumi was tasked to tell Takagi about it, and she knows he will rush to the restaurant to stop her from saying yes, telling her she has "an unexpected and urgent case to investigate". After that, no groom will ever want to meet her again. Yumi wishes Takagi would at last declare his love to Miwako. Sonoko wants to see the Omiai with her own eyes, but Yumi can't give them a lift there since she's currently on duty. Though, they unexpectedly meet Dr. Araide, and ask him to drive them there. They want to see if Takagi really will come or not, as they know he and Miwako actually love each other.
+
Meanwhile, Yumi informs Ran, Sonoko, and Conan about Sato's omiai. The two girls express their concern, but the officer assures them that Sato has formulated a plan to escape her quandary. She explains that she will send a text message to Takagi about Sato's omiai sometime later in the day, compelling him to rush to her rescue by pretending to respond to a nearby crime. Sato will then abandon her supposedly important event and assist Takagi in his operation—an action which should convince her match that she is an undesirable woman—one who does not take formalities like omiais seriously. Sonoko expresses interest in the match's identity and considers heading to the event venue to survey the scene. Ran comments on the considerable distance to the venue, but fortunately for them, they then cross paths with Araide and his car. <br>

+
Somewhere else in the city, Takagi and Chiba are exiting their vehicle when the former receives a phone call from Yumi asking if he has seen her text message. In that moment, a scream punctuates the area, and a man wearing a trench coat and biker helmet sprints through the streets while holding a bag full of stolen items from the local convenience store. Takagi and Chiba give chase, leaving Yumi's message left unread. The two sergeants shuffle through the crowd and pursue the thief into an alleyway. Upon clearing the narrow pass, they find an old man on the ground, having been shoved by the thief. He informs Takagi that the thief has entered the nearby park bathroom. Chiba finds the culprit's clothing and helmet jettisoned in the park bushes, while Takagi demands for the bathroom's occupants to leave the structure. Three individuals surface: Hiroshi Zama, Eiko Koshimizu, and Yasuo Kamieda. The sergeants ask for the old man to confirm the thief's identity, but he says his vision was impaired after he was struck, only remembering a "taller woman who wore blue under her coat." They turn to the suspects and note that none of the three perfectly match the given description.<br>
At the Minatoro Restaurant, Sato, dressed up to the nines in a traditional Japanese outfit, gets annoyed at her "husband"'s being more than 10-minute late, and she's about to leave as Isokichi Kamoi, the "groom"'s butler, comes in and apologises for his young master's lateness. The master's parents are away and couldn't come, and that master comes in too, saying he's late due to taking much time to choose the most suitable flowers to "Inspector Sato", and he's revealed to be Shiratori. Mrs. Sato and Shiratori seem to know and like each other. Sato understands her mistake, though it's a rather huge stroke of bad luck. Sato's mom tells her that, just like herself, her daughter has a crush on police agents. Sato tries to have Shiratori believe she really chose him at random, and he replies fate then decided for them to meet and get married maybe. Miwako secretly hopes Yumi didn't forget her promise to tell "her knight" to go and fetch Miwako before things get worse. Though, Miwako wonders who "Yumi's knight" actually is - she is ignorant of him being actually Takagi.
+
At the venue, Sonoko, Ran, Araide, and Conan learn from the register worker that Shiratori is Sato's match, leaving the girls astonished. When asked about their relationship to the guests, Conan lies about bringing the pair a present, and asks if they can occupy the room next door. Concurrently, Sato and Shiratori enjoy an awkward, yet lavish meal prepared by Shiratori's cooks, who specifically cooked seafood after learning about Sato's distaste for French cuisine.<br>

Back at the convenience store, Takagi takes note of two additional witness reports. A school girl recalls the culprit being around 180cm tall, wearing green clothes under their coat; a cafe owner recalls the culprit being around 170cm tall, wearing black clothing under their coat. With all three witness accounts conflicting with one another, Takagi is left helpless. <br>
Takagi has a sneezing fit as if someone were thinking about him. He gets Yumi's phone call telling him to check his text messages since she sent him something. Suddenly, someone screams behind him, saying a robber burglarised the convenience store and is trying to run away. Takagi and Chiba chase him, leaving Yumi's phone call into the car. They tell the crowd to stand aside and free the way for them, and they find an old man who's just been bumped into by the robber. The man says the robber went to hide into the park's public restroom. Takagi and Chiba rush there and find the gloves, helmet and long coat the robber was wearing, along with the booty bag, and they enter the restroom, ordering everyone to leave cabins and show up. Three people emerge : a tall and built man wearing a blue jumper and an earring named Hiroshi Zama, a small woman wearing a black hoodie named Eiko Koshimizu, and a middle-sized man wearing a green pullover. Takagi takes them near the old man, and asks him to tell them which of the three jostled him. He says he can't say for sure since his glasses had fallen during the shock, but he can at least say it was a woman wearing a blue jumper under her coat, smaller than or as small as him. Takagi doesn't understand since the only woman wears a black sweater... The three ask the police agents the permission to leave, since it seems they're out of the picture in that case, but Takagi and Chiba ask them to wait a moment as they need to listen to some other testimonies.
+
At the omiai venue, Kamoi and Sato's mother leave the two to spend time alone. Sato desperately clings to her phone, wondering when Yumi's rescue dispatch will arrive. Shiratori, however, immediately sees through his match's scheme and offers to play a game. If Takagi arrives to claim Sato, he will cede his ground; if Takagi fails to arrive, Sato must agree to become his wife. Sato asks how he knew Takagi would be sent to retrieve her. The Inspector laughs, stating he was merely joking. However, Sato, having considered the proposition, confidently agrees to play.

Sonoko and co are told by the restaurant's waitress that Sato is dating Shiratori in one of their rooms. They are astounded and don't know what to do, but Conan says they are old friends of Shiratori's parents, and they came to prepare a nice surprise for the couple, but they need some more time to finish it, and they ask to go into the next room to theirs to do so. In the meantime, the Satos, Shiratori and Kamoi are enjoying a delicious Japanese dinner, since Miwako doesn't appreciate French cuisine. Her mother is surprised to hear that, but Miwako seems to be lost in her thoughts, and Shiratori notices it.

Takagi asks the gathered crowd about any witnesses of the robbery around, and Zama, in the police car with the others, suggests Chiba should ask the convenience store about the robber. Chiba replies they did : the robber came in the place at around noon, when there's usually none or only a few people, and threatened the cashier and the manager with a knife, showing a "Take out money" paper to them. None could tell about his/her voice or appearance then. A high school student tells Takagi she was in a clothes' shop when she heard the scream and saw the robber running past the store : he/she's a very tall person, as he/she was at least one head taller than the other people in the crowd, and he/she wore a green sweater. She'd say the robber is a man, given his/her size and bulk. Takagi says the tallest suspect is Zama, but his sweater is blue. A passer-by then tells Takagi that a close-by bar's manager bragged about seeing the robber running past him. The manager is questioned, but can't say if the robber is a man or a woman, though he knows he/she wore a black sweater under his/her coat, and he/she's about 1.70 meters tall. Takagi says Kamieda is that tall but he wears a green jumper... The inspector is therefore all at sea and can't match testimonies.

In the meanwhile, Mrs. Sato and Kamoi decide to leave the couple alone, and Shiratori casts a glance at Sato who keeps looking at her phone in wait for the "knight" to call her. Shiratori tells her, all of a sudden, that he knew she expects a "valiant knight to come up and rescue her from the ugly ogre". Sato pretends not to understand a word he says, and he answers he agrees to make a deal with her : if Takagi comes along, Shiratori will leave the place and accept things how they are. But if Takagi doesn't, Sato will have to accept his marriage proposal. Sato asks him why he speaks about Takagi, and Shiratori says why not, and bursts into laughter, saying he got her there. Sato starts thinking deeply, while Conan and co are eavesdropping their conversation from the next room, and they suddenly hear Sato saying she agrees to the deal.

Tiger Scroll Case

File 318 - The Ruler's Treasure

Conan finds a mysterious quadrant-shaped mark on the castle roof.

Kazuha is relieved to learn the shopkeeper had held onto her missing wallet. However, the warm feelings melt away upon learning of the death that had occurred just outside.
Inspector Otaki arrives on the scene and discusses the events leading to the victim's death with Kogoro. The latter explains the victim is Yuji Kato, who played Toyotomi Hideyoshi that day amongst the tour group. He additionally deduces the death is a suicide, given no sane individual would climb onto the Osaka Castle roof in the rain while wearing a flammable fabric.

Meanwhile, Heiji has Conan climb onto the Osaka Castle roof in the rain. Still, he employs a rope as a harness. Conan finds a lighter and a quadrant-shaped mark left on the roof beam.

The rain reveals the scroll's hidden message

File 319 - Across Time...

Kazuha calls her father to help with the investigation.

Ran and Kazuha watch as Katagiri falls into the river while on fire.

At a restaurant, Ran deduces that Kazuha's true intentions were not for her father to takeover the investigation but rather for him to assist Heiji with information about the previous, related cases. Kazuha blushes and confesses she is attracted to the joyous smile Heiji gives after solveing a case. Ran says she feels the same way about Shinichi and the two girls bond over their romantic similarities.

Back at the castle, Conan discovers a battery near the structure's base, believing it proves Kato's death was a murder.

A powerful punch.

File 320 - Naniwa Kanjinchou

Heizo diminishes his son's contributions, likening his actions to sabotage.

Meanwhile, a silhouette calmly watches from amongst the crowd.
The group is then approached by the three surviving tour group members: Kasuya, Fukushima, and Wakisaka, who are still oblivious to Katagiri's death.

The suspects explain he was unable to attend the tour due to a sudden commitment.

Ran's umbrella spurs a major realization.

File 321 - The Tiger Scroll of Sadness

Heiji and Conan observe Kasuya pull open the doors to an abandoned factory and step inside. Despite Conan's qualms about the situation, Heiji pushes onward and into the factory. His attention is soon consumed by his target to the point where he fails to notice Conan's abduction at the hands of a tailing silhouette.

Heiji vows revenge on his father.

Meanwhile, at the Hattori residence, Shizuka scolds her husband for putting their son in danger.

  • File 322 - A Long-Awaited Gathering

Kaoru Kusano attacks Kogoro, believing him to be her stalker.

She turns to Kogoro to confirm his attendance only to find him in a catatonic state, believing the letter refers to Yoko's engagement.
Yoko says she kept Kogoro's attendance a secret from her friend, wishing for him to be a surprise.

The group ascends the floors and arrives at the apartment. However, despite repeatedly ringing the doorbell, they get no response. Kogoro finds the door open and slowly peaks into the room, only to find the tenant, Kaoru Kusano, standing at the doorway wielding a tennis racket. She accuses him of stalking before smashing the racket over his head.

Conan and Kenzaki find Kaoru bleeding out in her bathtub.

File 323 - The Secret of the Idols

Conan checks Kaoru's vitals and determines she can survive if she is immediately transferred to a hospital's care. Kenzaki hesitates for a moment before grabbing a towel to help pull her out of the water. The rest of the attendees arrive, having been alerted by Kenzaki's voice. Makuma, in particular, is deeply upset by the situation and jumps into the bathtub to save his client.

    Kaoru's signed paper board.

She replies it is because of her interest in mystery stories—an interest she grew due to a certain influence.
She adds that despite Kaoru's ostensibly callous demeanor towards Makuma, she cares for him, even stating she believes him to be a capable actor who simply lacked the willpower to see his dreams through.

File 324 - The Idols' Misunderstanding

The apartment landline begins to ring, and Yoko tensely takes the phone to her ear. Tears roll down her cheeks as her friends assume the worst. However, Yoko turns around and reveals her tears to be of joy, stating Kaoru's surgery was a success. Collective relief suffuses the air and everyone rejoices, all except for one.

Terumi's detective idol is revealed to be Shinichi.

A busy film set bustles with activity as the director praises Terumi for her suave performance as a master shogi player. Before the production begin another take, she discretely pulls out a photograph of her idol, Shinichi, as a means of readying herself.
Meanwhile, Conan, Ran, and Kogoro watch Terumi's performance on the television. Ran comments that her character speaks like a detective rather than a shogi player; Kogoro agrees. Conan considers the unlikely, but dismisses the idea.

  • File 325 - Something the Lion Dropped

The Detective Boys notice a foreigner being swarmed by the press.

Professor Agasa and the Detective Boys enjoy a spectacular circus performance called "The Animal Show with Paul & Annie."
With the Detective Boys' assistance, they manage to take advantage of the confusion and successfully drag the man to safety.

James confirms, stating he lives in Chicago, "the windy city where Capone stormed..." As the man walks away, Haibara discreetly mentions to Conan about sensing something strange about James.

The "police" pull their guns on James.

    The blood stains "A," "&," and "P."

    File 326 - P & A

The kidnappers gloat about their plan, believing they will receive millions in ransom money from Hawk's family. James reiterates that his captives are under a misapprehension, but his words fall on deaf ears. Coerced into silence, he calmly sits, seemingly unworried about his predicament and looking forward to a different "thrill."
Meanwhile, Genta and Mitsuhiko desperately attempt to persuade two police officers into launching a coordinated search for James. Conan and Haibara worry about his fate, as they take notice of a live radio broadcast featuring Randy Hawk's circus performance.

The kidnappers also notice the broadcast and are sent spiraling into panic and confusion. One kidnapper suggests killing James immediately, but another reprimands him for being hot-headed, suggesting they follow their original plan of executing him in the mountains of Gunma and burying his body.

Haibara senses Akai's presence as he drives past the Detective Boys.

She also agrees to involve herself and Takagi after hearing the culprits may be armed.

She anxiously asks Conan if he saw the driver's face, but the boy answers in the negative.

    Akai in pursuit.

Yumi, not wanting to hamper her fellow police officer, allows the car to pass inspection.
The Detective Boys arrive at the checkpoint and are shocked to hear Yumi report that she saw not one foreigner. Stumped, the group redirects their attention back to James' message, each member floating their own ridiculous suggestion about what the "A" and "P" could represent. Ayumi's ludicrous suggestion, "Pelican" and "Ashika (sea lion)," however, catches Conan's attention and helps him crack the code.
Meanwhile, more than eight kilometers from Conan's position, James sees a black Chevrolet pickup truck driven by Akai in the rear view mirror. He gives a confident smirk.

    File 327 - A Stupid Plan

Conan tells Yumi that the kidnappers are driving a police car, shocking the officer. Sato and Takagi also arrive at the scene just in time for Conan to present his deduction.

In the fake police car, one of the men voices his concerns about Yumi inspection, and questions whether their kidnapping is being actively investigated or not. The men ready their guns, prepared to shoot their way through any additional police interference.

The kidnappers find themselves ensnared in Conan's trap.

James smiles, internally reflecting on the Conan's tactical masterclass, calling him "Cool Guy."

Akai enlists James' help in the search for his elusive "lover."

On the other hand, Conan internally considers Akai's suspicious presence, having recognized him as a fellow bus passenger during the hijacking.[1]

    Sato's Omiai Case

  • File 328 - Sato's Omiai

Sato is shocked to learn she had chosen Shiratori to be her match.

She inspects the folder and greatly approves of the choice, piquing Sato's curiosity.

Takagi's phone call is interrupted by a sudden robbery.

The sergeants ask for the old man to confirm the thief's identity, but he says his vision was impaired after he was struck, only remembering a "taller woman who wore blue under her coat." They turn to the suspects and note that none of the three perfectly match the given description.

Sato risks her conjugality and plays Shiratori's game.

At the venue, Sonoko, Ran, Araide, and Conan learn from the register worker that Shiratori is Sato's match, leaving the girls astonished. When asked about their relationship to the guests, Conan lies about bringing the pair a present, and asks if they can occupy the room next door. Concurrently, Sato and Shiratori enjoy an awkward, yet lavish meal prepared by Shiratori's cooks, who specifically cooked seafood after learning about Sato's distaste for French cuisine.[2]
