Anime Episode 488: The Devil of the TV Station

File 591 - The Devil Comes...

Yoko Okino invites the Detective Boys to tour the "Kamen-Raider" studio at the Nichiuri TV station. Upon their arrival, the singer informs them that the tour has to be cancelled because the producers are under time pressure. Professor Agasa consoles the Detective Boys and suggests they look at other things instead. Ai asks Conan about the latest developments regarding Rena Mizunashi and Eisuke Hondo. Conan’s investigations reveal that the two cannot be siblings because they have different blood types, making a blood transfusion between them impossible. Shortly thereafter, Genta, Mitsuhiko, and Ayumi encounter Satan Onizuka, the lead singer of the rock band "Three Ferrymen"; startled by his costume and mask, they refer to him as "the Devil." Onizuka reacts with a mix of composure and surprise, then quickly leaves the group without revealing his identity. Yoko explains to the children who he is and mentions that Onizuka is scheduled to appear on a talk show. Mitsuhiko reflects on the singer's name and remembers that his sister is a fan of Onizuka and had asked him to get an autograph from the singer. Since Onizuka has already disappeared and Yoko has an appearance of her own, the Detective Boys decide to search for Satan Onizuka's dressing room together, hoping to get the autograph.

Meanwhile, Onizuka's manager enters his dressing room and is surprised to find the singer there before noon. Onizuka wants to have lunch and orders ramen from "Tenpukutei," fried rice from "Janjanken," and gyoza from "Eirinan" from his manager. The manager then asks why he should order these dishes individually from three different restaurants when all three serve Chinese cuisine. Onizuka explains his preference by citing the varying quality of the food and emphasizes that he is a regular customer at all three establishments. He then asks about a specific mirror he likes to use for his stage makeup; his manager confirms that he can find it at a shop he plans to visit shortly. Before leaving the room, Onizuka tells the manager he wants to sleep after lunch and does not wish to be woken until it is time for his performance. He attributes his fatigue to an argument with his superior the previous evening, prompting him to ask about the man's whereabouts so he can apologize.

Meanwhile, Professor Agasa and the children are searching the hallway for Onizuka’s dressing room. Their spirits are somewhat dampened as they struggle to find their way around. Conan notices a man dressed as a chef hurrying down the corridor while checking his watch. At the same time, Onizuka—now without makeup or costume—pays an unannounced visit to his superior to apologize. In the reception room, the two discuss a new show, Onizuka’s upcoming performance, and an unspecified matter they had previously argued about—a project the superior has since cancelled. Onizuka accepts the decision calmly; he points to the raincoat he is wearing, highlighting its water-repellent properties, light weight, and ability to protect against potential blood splatters. As he does so, he pulls out a knife, shocking his superior.

A short while later, the children and the professor arrive at the singer's dressing room. They are about to knock when the manager informs them that Onizuka is asleep and does not wish to be disturbed. However, Onizuka opens the door himself; he has since reapplied his makeup and put on his stage costume. At Mitsuhiko's request, the singer gives him an autograph for his sister, Asami. Ayumi notices a large number of folded paper cranes in the singer's room. Impressed by the origami figures, the children enter the room. Onizuka explains that he folds these cranes when he is bored, using an unusual ruler to help him. Afterward, the manager hands Onizuka the mirror he had asked for; upon looking into it, Onizuka seems to notice something about his face. Shortly thereafter, the sirens of police cars and an ambulance can be heard. A staff member knocks on the dressing room door and reports that something has happened to the head of the agency. Everyone immediately rushes to the reception area, where they find the agency head lying face down on the floor; he has been stabbed.

File 592 - The Devil's Trick

Upon arriving at the scene, Inspector Megure and Officer Takagi first question an assistant director who had an appointment with the murder victim, Tenji Urushibara, for around 2:00 PM. He explains that he alerted the police and emergency services before heading to the dressing room of Satan Onizuka—who appears at the scene at that very moment. Satan reveals that Urushibara had many enemies, himself included. Furthermore, he lacks an alibi for the presumed time of the murder — 1:00 PM — as he had been alone in his dressing room. However, Satan argues that committing the crime would have been impossible for him: applying his makeup takes about half an hour, and there is no mirror in his dressing room. Had he gone to the victim's room already wearing the makeup, he would undoubtedly have attracted attention.

A subsequent inspection of Satan's dressing room confirms this statement. Although a hand mirror is found, Satan's manager had only brought it in around 2:00 PM. During a further search of the room, however, Conan notices inconsistencies: traces of Satan's lipstick are found on the autograph card Mitsuhiko had intended for his sister and on the cigarette butts in the ashtray, but not on the cutlery from the meal he had ordered. Satan counters that he had wiped off the lipstick before eating; unlike the rest of his makeup, he does not need a mirror to reapply it.

A short while later, when Satan clutches his squinting eyes in obvious pain, his manager explains that he suffers from dry eyes due to his contact lenses. Nevertheless, Satan refuses the offered eye drops. Ai now suspects one of the deliverymen of being an accomplice, but Inspector Takagi dismisses this theory: since none of the delivery services had collected their dishes, a mirror should have been found at the crime scene. As a hand-off on the way to the victim's room can also be ruled out, Conan — who regards Satan as the culprit — wonders how the perpetrator managed to apply makeup. While pondering the origami and watching the other Detective Boys look at their reflections in the windowpane, Conan sees through Satan's trick.

File 593 - The Devil's Tears

As evening falls and the police investigation has yet to yield results, Satan demands that Inspectors Megure and Takagi drop the case, arguing there is no evidence against him.

Conan then intervenes in the conversation using Professor Agasa’s voice, proposing the theory that Satan Onizuka removed his makeup to enter Mr. Urushibara’s room unnoticed. He had disguised himself as a delivery person for this purpose; having already ordered food from three different restaurants, the arrival of a fourth delivery person aroused no suspicion. Furthermore, Conan suspects that Satan improvised the "missing" mirror using materials from his dressing room: a drafting triangle — supposedly used for precise origami folding — could serve as a mirror if a piece of dark paper were held behind it. Although colors could not be distinguished this way, Satan always used the same colors, and the exact shade could be verified using a piece of silver foil.

Convinced by this explanation, Inspector Megure orders a search of the entire building for a blood-stained raincoat; he assumes Satan must have worn one to prevent the victim's blood from getting onto his own clothes. While Satan continues to deny the crime, Conan — still using Professor Agasa’s voice — asks him to fold some origami. When Satan refuses, Conan asks Ayumi to do it instead. After she blows into the paper figure during the final step to shape it better, it becomes clear that Satan could not have folded the origami that day; otherwise, traces of his lipstick would have been found on the paper, just as they were on the cigarette butts.

As Conan lays out his conclusions, he is interrupted by Satan’s manager, who continues to deny his client's guilt. However, when Conan demands that Satan remove his makeup, the latter confesses to the crime, as the victim's blood spatters are revealed beneath the stage makeup. Upon seeing the traces of blood around his eyes in the mirror brought by the manager, Satan refuses the offered eye drops to prevent the water-soluble makeup from running. Having been exposed in this manner, Satan explains his motive before being taken away by the police: when he developed a sore throat and had to be hospitalized during a tour, he regularly received fan letters and origami cranes from a young girl. However, the messages suddenly stopped coming. Unable to explain the sudden silence, Satan fell into a creative slump; because he could not write new lyrics for the band, the group went on hiatus. Satan Onizuka later learned that the girl had committed suicide in order to donate her blood to him. Urushibara, the head of the "Three Ferrymen's" management agency, had posted a call for a blood sacrifice on the band's website in Satan's name, thereby prompting the girl to take her own life. The agency head was indifferent to the girl's fate; instead, he was thrilled by the hardcore fans' reaction to the blood sacrifice at the first concert following the suicide.
