Namako re-reads the Manga by Gosho Aoyama and makes some quick notes about a lot of things. Characters and locations are listed by order of appearance for every chapter. You are welcome to bore the heck out of yourself. :D

I actually started this re-read a long while ago and wrote down these things, which I will just dump on this page. Feel free to put anything you might find useful into the Wiki proper.

Plot

Shinichi Kudo is a well known high school detective solving case after case, already acknowledged as a great help for the Japanese police. On a date with his secret love Ran Mouri, the daughter of an unsuccessful private detective, he gets to clear up another murder and follows two mysterious guys on their way to an illegal weapons deal afterwards, where he gets beaten up and fed some new kind of poison, allegedly killing someone without leaving a trance. To his own (but probably not the reader's) surprise, he "just" shrinks to the height of an elementary school student...

General stuff

  • Start of the series and of what the fandom calls the "Conan Arc".
  • This chapter had the first few pages colored with water colors in its original release.
  • Takanori Sewa's, Reiko's (Hitomi's friend) and Kishida's names are only given in Episode One: The Great Detective Turned Small and the Anime series respectively.
  • Shinichi Kudo and Ran Mouri are in the second year of Teitan High School.
  • Shinichi is already well known as a high school detective; Ran is captain of the Karate team.
  • The town and city they live in was still unknown, but it looked rather suburban back then.
  • Shinichi promised Ran to take her to Tropical Land if she won the city tournament.
  • Tropical Land itself is probably a composite of different popular amusement parks in and around Tokyo, especially Tokyo Disneyland and Summer Land.
  • The plane on the back of the jacket the guy in front of the Mystery Coaster wears looks a bit like the same type of Japanese warplane George Kirishima flew as a toy in Detective George's Mini-Mini Big Strategy.
  • Gin's hair seems relatively short (down to his shoulder blades) in comparison to later on.
  • The first time a crow appears in relation to an appearance by the Black Organization.
  • "These kind of things happen a lot..." - "NO, THEY DON'T!" <- lol, considering everything Ran chronologically experienced before this chapter alone, as we learn later down the line...
  • The first explanations about the APTX, courtesy of Gin: "We will use this... The new poison that the organization developed... You can't find any traces of poison in the body with this stuff... The perfect crime!! We haven't tested it on humans yet, so this will be our little guinea pig..."
    • Interesting, so that means the list of the poisoned victims was started after Shinichi? But Koji Haneda is listed on it too, so it also contains the names of victims of Silver Bullet and/or other poison(s)? Why are the names of victims of different kinds of poisons on one and the same list, what is the purpose of it exactly?

Plot

After being found by the security guards in his shrunken form and mistaking him for a kid, Shinichi Kudo escapes the Tropical Land's medical room to get back to his own home. After a troublesome way back to his house, he meets his family's neighbour and old friend Professor Hiroshi Agasa, who he quickly convinces about his real identity. Unfortunately, Ran Mouri also arrives shortly after, looking for Shinichi out of concern since he's missing since their date at the amusement park. Agasa and Shinichi quickly invent the persona of Conan Edogawa, moving him in with Ran and her father, Kogoro Mouri, in the Mouri Detective Agency. After arriving there, Kogoro literally crashes into them, telling about the first case he got in a long time...

General stuff

  • This chapter had a watercolor drawing as a cover in its original release.
  • This chapter was in real life released on the exact date Shinichi Kudo was reading the newspaper after school in FILE.1.
  • First appearance of the Kudo residence, which probably was based on the same model (or a very similar one) to Akako Koizumi's house from Magic Kaito. Even Gosho Aoyama himself joked about this in the Omake of Magic Kaito Volume 5.
  • What does the piece of paper at the table in the Mouri Detective Agency say? In the German translation it kinds looks like "Romance series 'China Wok'", but it isn't really decipherable either.

  • Ran is actually already making a pretty unambiguous love confession to Shinichi, unconsciously of course, if one doesn't count that short moment in the Mystery Coaster.
  • The Mouri Detective Agency in turn doesn't really seem far away from the Kudo residence, considering that Ran could quickly run to it and return with Conan in the span of a presumably short walk and talk.
  • "DRINKING AND MAHJONG AGAIN?!" <- He really seems to do this a lot, lol
  • The street in front of the Mouri Detective Agency is remarkably wider and the surroundings aren't as high-rise and densely built-up than later on.
  • In contrary to the settings before, the (real) Yayoi District Mr. Tani lives in seems to be a bit farther away, judging by the fact that they have to use a taxi to reach it.

Callbacks

  • FILE.1: Considering this is the direct continuation of the first chapter, there are several mentions of events that happened in it, like the shrunken Shinichi Kudo trying to tell about his encounter with Gin and Vodka in the medical room and the former one explaining about the drug is briefly retold in a panel background of Shinichi's memory, as well as Ran Mouri explaining to her father how Shinichi ran away.

Mistakes & Goofs

  • Gin knocked out Shinichi right in front of the concrete base of the Tropical Land's ferris wheel in the previous chapter, but now, woken up in his shrunken form, he is lying a good distance away from it. Did those two drag him away from it a bit so his corpse wouldn't be found immediately or is it really an oversight?

Plot

Conan Edogawa, Kogoro and Ran Mouri arrive at the mansion of the wealthy Tani family, the daughter of which, Akiko Tani, was kidnapped. The servant Mr. Asou quickly incriminates himself, actually being the "kidnapper". But then another, real kidnapper calls Mr. Tani, keeping Akiko hostage and demanding his money...

General stuff

  • This traditional Samurai house of the Tani family strongly resembles the one the Mine family owns in Yaiba... Maybe Gosho Aoyama reused some reference model here?
  • The (fictional) rival companies of Mr. Tani mentioned are "Kadobeni" and "Yotsui", which later get bigger roles: Kadobeni is mentioned later this Volume in the Case with Yoko Okino, the Yotsui plays a signicant part in a case in Volume 9.
  • The fact about the guard dog not barking creating a contradiction in the culprit's explanation is taken directly from a Sherlock Holmes short story, The Adventure of Silver Blaze.
  • The unnamed hotel Akiko Tani stays at is mentioned as "nearby", so probably in the Yayoi District, too?
  • The kidnapper demands 3,000,000, Yen, this would currently be ~28,000 US-$ (May 2020).

Callbacks

Considering this is the direct continuation of the first and second chapter(s), there are several mentions and connections to events from those.

  • FILE.1: Conan Edogawa thinks about Gin and Vodka and them shrinking him, which occured in the first chapter.

Plot

The real kidnapper calls Mr. Tani and makes his demands, while Akiko Tani interrupts and tells about a "chimney" she can see from the window of the school she is held at. Conan Edogawa catches the Tani's guard dog Jumbo and manages to narrow down the place the two are at, identifying the supposed chimney to actually be the side of a skyscraper. But despite his intellect intact as proven by this, Shinichi's/Conan's new body is no match for the kidnapper, who beats him up badly...

General stuff

  • There are five schools in the vicinity of the Tani residence - I wonder whether the maps in Conan Edogawa's mind are based on real ones or made up?
  • Why does he even know all that rather trivial stuff about from which schools in Yayoi and surroundings you can see chimneys...? This seems to imply he has one absurdly good visual memory and thinking, even for a detective and especially for his age.
  • One of the schools Conan in checking out it the "Busamaru High School".
  • The skyscraper resembles the real Sunshine 60 in Toshima Ward a bit Gosho Aoyama lived close to until around the start of Detective Conan. A similar building appears in the second half of Yaiba and early Detective Conan (including the Omakes) a lot in background shots.
  • The "Futatsubashi Middle School" probably is a play on the real Hitatsubashi Middle School in Chiyoda Ward.
  • The "Hyakujii Park" on the other hand surely is an allusion to the Shakujii Park Gosho liked to visit a lot during the time he lived in Nerima Ward.

Plot

Conan, still getting beaten up by the kidnapper, gets unexpected help by Jumbo, who went back to the Tani residence and returns to the Futatsubashi Middle School, first bringing Ran Mouri with him, who makes short work of the culprit with her Karate skills. All seems well that ends well, Mr. Asou and Akiko explain the situation to her father, Kogoro is proud of himself and Conan is allowed to move into the Mouri Detective Agency.

General stuff

  • The first moment of the series in which Ran Mouri uses her almost superhuman Karate skills when innocent people are in danger. She also still isn't afraid about almost anything happening around her...
  • The Sunshine 60-like building is seen as part of the cityscape again at the end when Conan Edogawa, Ran and Kogoro Mouri take the taxi back home.

Callbacks

  • FILE.1: Conan Edogawa again thinks about the moment from the first chapter Gin fed him the poison, which is also visible in the panel background.
  • FILE.2-4: The current case is the one Kogoro Mouri got at the end of the second chapter, which started in the third and continued in the fourth, getting resolved in this chapter.

Plot

Conan Edogawa is living at the Mouri Detective Agency now, but no new information about the "men in black" is incoming. Kogoro Mouri himself is goofing off all day and Ran Mouri is away for school, continuing her everyday life. Conan quickly learns during a visit to Professor Hiroshi Agasa that life for her isn't all that sunshine and roses and gets his first gadget by the Prof, a Voice-Changing Bowtie. Back at the Mouri's residence, Kogoro's favorite pop idol Yoko Okino appears in person and inquires about help in a case...

General stuff

  • The settings still really look way more suburban, probably more inspired by the Wikipedia:Adachi Ward and the cityscapes resemble Toshima, with the Sunshine 60-like building appearing again. Both wards were previous homes of Gosho Aoyama, instead of Minato and its vicinity, which is clearly the basis for Beika only a bit later on.
  • "He used to be a talented police detective..." - Professor Hiroshi Agasa about Kgoro Mouri. There was already groundwork being laid for a deeper characterization of him...
  • Despite Agasa being more of a engineer and mechanic, he's really doing stereotypically science-y chemical experiments a lot during these early chapters.
  • Interestingly, Ran Mouri in fact remembers Gin and Vodka from Tropical Land and that Shinichi Kudo definitely wanted to follow those and has sparsely appeared since then, "working on a case". I wonder whether this will be revisited one day?
  • Besides the RZ-04 (see below under "Easter Eggs"), there's a jack-in-the-box, a strange pistol (maybe a miniature of Kid's Card Gun?), a light bulb, an umbrella, something which seems to be a wallet and another robot inbetween Agasa's scraps.
  • Conan Edogawa gets his first gadget by Agasa: The Voice-Changing Bowtie!
  • That's the can of a canned beer by Kirin in front of the sleeping Kogoro and it looks like he ate a bag of dried squid. There's also seemingly a list of bets before him - the first indication that he's big on betting games.
  • The show he wants to watch seems to be "Idol goro goro!!".
  • Yoko Okino is living on the 25th floor of a skyscraper apartment complex (which seems to be around 27 to 30 floors high).

Easter Eggs, Cameos & Crossover

  • The guys in the show on TV Kogoro Mouri watches (and laughs about) before Yoko Okino appears are two of the assistants of Gosho Aoyama - Yutaka Tani punching Masaki Negishi. Judging by the Omakes, Yutaka Tani sits across Gosho and helps him with inking the manuscripts of the Manga. He furthermore already inspired the name of the Tani family in the previous case.
  • One of the robots between Professor Hiroshi Agasa's scraps is a sleeping RZ-04, the robots that stalked Kaitou Kid in Chapter 9 of his own series (Magic Kaito Volume 2, Chapter 3). I wonder how Agasa got his hands on one of them? Maybe Kid gave one to Konosuke Jii and he offered it to his "professor friend" in return?

  • This chapter had the first few pages colored with water colors in its original release.
  • Judging by the colored pages, Conan Edogawa's clothes really still seemed to be red by then, with a green bow-tie.
  • After Professor Hiroshi Agasa's rather positive descriptions about Kogoro Mouri's past, Juzo Megure's memories as his colleague in this chapter don't seem to be as fond...

  • During the outside shots of the skyscraper apartment building Yoko Okino lives in, the moon randomly changes from a Waning Crescent Moon 🌘 to a Waxing Crescent Moon 🌒, despite being the former one during the rest of the case.

Plot

Yuko Ikezawa incriminates herself by instantly knowing the finer details of Yoko Okino's apartment - despite allegedly never being there before -, Eiichi Yamagishi tried to remove evidence from the active crime scene and Yoko Okino reveals to actually know the victim. All of this helps Conan Edogawa to get closer to the truth behind all of it, but how should he convey it to Kogoro Mouri and the police?

General stuff

  • Akiyoshi Fujie worked at Kadobeni after high school, which is the same company Mr. Tani mentioned during the previous case.

  • Apropos 3rd Base 4th: Akiyoshi Fujie's and Yoko Okino's alma mater, the (fictional) Kohnan High School, is one of the main settings of that Manga. Ironically, another incarnation of Eiichi Yamagishi is a student there, too, and part of Shigeo Nagashima's baseball team.

Plot

Conan Edogawa, knocking out Kogoro Mouri with an ash tray and imitating his voice with the new Voice-Changing Bowtie, solves the case. But not all's well that ends well: Ran Mouri still misses Shinichi Kudo, so Conan has to tell her somehow that he's alright and will return to her someday.

General stuff

  • The off-voice monologue about the diary at the end is explained like it's been a while ago; a rhetorical device that was already used in the very first chapter by Ran Mouri's "off-voice" (depending on the translation). Easter Eggs, Cameos & Crossover

  • Yoko's manager, Eiichi Yamagishi, is another of Gosho's assistants, this time not only named, but even modeled after him (judging by how he is usually portrayed in other Manga and the Omakes). According to Gosho, Yamagishi is in charge of designing and drawing technical stuff, like machinery, vehicles, weapons and architecture. He already had some cameos and mentions in previous works, like Nonchalant Lupin, Magic Kaito, Yaiba and 3rd Base 4th.
  • Akiyoshi Fujie's and Yoko Okino's high school, the (fictional) Kohnan High School, is one of the main settings of 3rd Base 4th.

Plot

After mysteriously vanishing eight years ago, phantom thief Kaitou Kid is on the loose again. As chance would have it, just as this news broke, inside his own house, high school student Kaito Kuroba stumbles upon the secret room of his late father, Toichi Kuroba, who was a world-renowned magician. He died eight years ago under circumstances no less mysterious than the disappearance of Kaito Kid around the same time - could he have been Kid? Kaito puts on the costume he finds and tries to confront this "new" Kid, who happens to be the old Konosuke Jii, assistant and friend of his father, who tries to solve the murder of Toichi. After learning that he indeed was Kid and that it could have been a murder, Kaito takes over the mantle of Kid himself and plans to lure out the killers by performing spectacular thefts, to find out the truth and avenge this undiscovered crime - always being hunted by his best friend and classmate Aoko's father inspector Ginzo Nakamori, who already chased Toichi back in the day.

General stuff

  • Magic Kaito is heavily inspired by previous phantom thief characters like Arsène Lupin and Lupin III - who actually inspired a whole subgenre in Japan - and based directly on Gosho Aoyama's own prototype Nonchalant Lupin. Gosho actually said, even though it may have been tongue-in-cheek, that the sole reason he became a Mangaka was "to draw a high school phantom thief". Probably because for this reason alone, Kaito Kid remained his own personal favourite character from his gallery for a long time before he started to share this honor with Conan Edogawa.
  • H also didn't use any tones for Kaitou Kid's hatband because he was a poor student with little money back then.
  • The name of the (math) teacher Erika Konno was never given in the Manga, the only source for it are the Anime adaptions so far.
  • Two of the flags the Kaito puppet spews out (besides confetti, some garlands, a chubby chicken, two playing cards - one of them being a spade 2 and another a diamond 4 - and what seems to be an eyeball toy?) are the ones of the United States of America, Japan and Chile respectively - the middle one in the first panel isn't identifiable because of the Manga being grayscale, but it could be the one of Italy or the Republic of Ireland.
  • Kaito uses his distinct Card Gun during class - interesting that no one seems to remember, I bet they don't sell these at every corner...
  • The math at the chalkboard and in Kaito's and Aoko's answers doesn't seem to make any sense of course - but let's just accept it as correct. :D
  • The original Kaito Kid's disappearance and Toichi Kuroba's death are still "eight years ago" in Detective Conan, firmly placing both series in the same year, playing roughly concurrently - even though Kaito Kuroba became the new Kid a little bit before Shinichi Kudo was shrunken to become Conan Edogawa.
  • Ginzo Nakamori works at the Minato Police Station - it's unclear whether it's supposed to be in Tokyo's Minato Ward or someplace else (since "minato" just means "harbor" and there are a lot of places named like that in Japan - the name is as generic as you can get).
  • Kid's next aim is the "Kono Star Sapphire", worth 400,000,000 Yen - this would currently be around ~3,750,000 US-$ (May 2020).
  • The old man at the poker table in the flashback about Toichi Kuroba, could that be James Hopper?
  • Besides the fact that Chikage Kuroba looks wholly different in this chapter (which Gosho later alludes to in the "Phantom Lady" arc) and we don't learn her name yet, it's interesting that there were already hints back then that she's in on the whole Toichi/Kid thing.
  • "Ono Bank", with the whole "Ono being a stand-in for Tokyo/Japan/etc." like Tōto (see below), the look of the building and the fact the police helicopters have to fly across Ginza to the north-east to reach it heavily implies for it to be Magic Kaito's equivalent to the Tokyo Bank, located in the Nihonbashi District of Chūō Ward (just like Ginza itself) back then.

Mistakes & Goofs

  • The moon changes his phase from Waxing Crescent Moon 🌒 to Waning Crescent Moon 🌘 for one panel (when Konosuke Jii notices that Kid is Kaito Kuroba).

Easter Eggs, Cameos & Crossover

  • Parallel to his own first series, Gosho Aoyama assisted his mentor and friend Yutaka Abe with the creation of his Manga 100% Tantei Monogatari, which started half a year earlier, and began to tie both concurrent stories together from the beginning. Gosho took the setting of Ekoda High School from that series and integrated it as a setting for his characters to attend from this chapter onwards, too - even though we don't learn its name here yet. The same month this chapter was released, Kaito Kuroba and Aoko Nakamori appeared in 100% Tantei Monogatari alongside Momoko Aoyama and Gosho explained on a bonus page of the latter Manga that Kaito and Momoko indeed are classmates. She briefly appears in return in Magic Kaito Chapter 6.
  • The "Ono Bank" is similar in name to the "Ono Central Hospital" appearing in The Santa Claus of Summer before. It's unclear whether that's supposed to be the name of a place, an allusion to a name from Gosho's acquaintances and/or a simple placeholder to avoid real names, like "Tōto" functions in Detective Conan. The last assumption could have been proven by the fact that for a long time, other names with "Ono" (小野) in it appeared regularly in Magic Kaito, like the "Ono Newspaper", "ONO Airlines", an "ONO Department Store" and "Ono Real Estate", which have disappeared from the series altogether by now (not counting Anime adaptions), while "Tōto" is used instead.

Plot

Yaiba Kurogane is a young boy living in an unnamed jungle, together with his father Kenjuro, who instructs him about things like survival training and martial arts - especially Kendo. One day they kill and eat a Gorilla, with a tiger trying to steal a bit of the grilled goods, but the Gorilla's next of kin try to retaliate - so Yaiba, his father and the tiger have to flee. They hide in a wooden box, which unfortunately gets closed that very moment and loaded onto a plane to be sent to Narita Airport near Tokyo.

After their arrival, Kenjuro meets an old rival of his, Raizo Mine, and his daughter, Sayaka - who completely fascinates Yaiba, never having seen a girl before. But they are still on the run: Kenjuro grabs Raizo, Sayaka, his son and the tiger to flee again - this time from the airport police - and dumps this group in a taxi, asking the driver to bring them to the Mine residence...

General stuff

  • This chapter had the first few pages colored with water colors in its original release
  • It was made/released directly after the three chapters of Detective George's Mini-Mini Big Strategy, which were in turn directly made after Chapter 12 of Magic Kaito (Volume 2, Chapter 6). Gosho Aoyama described this experience as pretty daunting and that he really had to rush the latter chapter to get it all done on time.
  • Yaiba Kurogane's name is one of the less creative ilk: "yaiba" just means "blade" and "kurogane" translates to "iron".
  • The unnamed jungle (meaningfully described as "This is a jungle") Yaiba and his father live in seems to be (intentionally) highly ambiguous about what jungle or even where it could remotely be. Besides the rather generous surroundings, animals like Gorillas (from Sub-Saharan Africa), Tigers (having their habitat in continental Asia) and - as we will see later on - Jaguars (who usually live in Central and South America) and Vultures also seem to have their habitat there. It also grows pineapples who are reaped there - and the wooden boxes of which just have generic, stylized "PINE APPLE" logo.
  • Yaiba doesn't even really seem to understand what a "law" is...
  • The (real) Narita Airport, located on the border between the towns of Narita and Shibayama in the Chiba Prefecture (Greater Tokyo Area), appears several times in Gosho's works, probably because it was the most important international airport of Japan back in the day. It also served as the place of arrival of Princess Anne of Sublina in Magic Kaito and the location where the showdown between Conan Edogawa and Yutaka Abe happened. It was replaced in this function by Haneda Airport in 2013, which is mirrored in Gosho's works, where this one appears since then instead.
    • They also have to arrive in what is Terminal 1 nowadays, since Terminal 2 and 3 opened in 1992 and 2015 respectively, long after the release of this chapter.
  • The plane Yaiba and his father arrive with is "flight #704" with a machine of Japan Airlines (JAL), a real airway company. JAL's crescent-shaped logo also was the template for the brand of the (fictional) LUNA airline company in Detective Conan. I wonder whether the flight number JAL 704 was also real back in 1988 and where it came from?
  • Raizo Mine just returned from a Kendo tournament he won in (continental) Asia.
  • Kenjuro accidentally boarded some random plane to some random place and just as he arrives at the airport, his vitriolic best bud, who he hasn't met in ages, arrives there, too? What are the chances? Gosho's penchant for absurd coincidences aren't all that new, aren't they? :p
  • The taxi cab shows an interesting company name: "OX"

Plot

After succesfully escaping the airport police by pineapple means, Kenjuro Kurogane unsolicitedly moves his son into the Mine residence, against the wishes of its owners, Raizo and his daughter, Sayaka Mine. Yaiba takes a stroll through the house and encounters Grandma Mine, who he thinks is an underfed baboon. Fed up with him, she takes him into the Dojo of the house and, after learning about him being Kenjuro's son, offers a challenge: If Yaiba can beat Mutou, the strongest fighter in the Mine Dojo, Yaiba can stay in their house. And at first, her expectation of him losing this battle seems to come true...

General stuff

  • That's a waste of good food, Yaiba.
  • The Mine residence is a rather typical so-called "Samurai house" (武家屋敷 Buke yashiki?). This already implies that the Mine family probably aren't "just" middle class people, considering how expensive such a rare, traditional mansion would be - especially in Tokyo.
  • Kenjuro: "We used to fight togher!" - I wonder under what circumstances and against whom...
  • Grandma Mine debuts and I can already say that we won't get to learn her name throughout the whole series, with her just getting called "Goinkyo" (ご隠居) all the time, which means something along the line of "retired person".
  • Men ("head", "helmet", "mask"), Dô ("body") and Kote ("wrist") are three of the body parts you have to announce before landing a hit in Kendo. If you are interested, you can read more about that here: Point Areas Used in Kendo
  • I don't think alcohol is very good for tigers. :p

General stuff

  • The canned beer with the distinct star logo Kenjuro Kurogane is taking with him on his training tour seems to be something by the real Sapporo Breweries.
  • The monster in Yaiba Kurogane's imagination looks a lot like Gamera (who also appeared in Detective Conan as "Gomera") and similar Kaiju monsters.
  • Sayaka Mine's middle/junior high school and her choleric teacher, Mr. Sudou, appear for the very first time. We won't get to learn the school's name throughout the whole series (I think you can slowly see a pattern emerging? :D), but for simplicity's sake, I like to call it "Yaoya Middle School" or "Yaoya Junior High School", after the fictional district the Mine family lives in - just keep in mind that this name is inofficial and it's never called by that in any Yaiba story.
  • Mr. Sudou is a 7th Dan in Kendo.
  • That's one nasty attack by Yaiba. :'D

Callbacks

  • Chapter 2: Yaiba Kurogane turning around and trying to sense the anger of his opponent Mr. Sudou is a callback to the second chapter, where he did just that with Mutou, as Sayaka Mine also notices.

  • If that blonde girl with the glasses, sporting those twintails with pearls, should look familiar: As we will see at the end of the Manga, this is indeed Keiko Momoi from Magic Kaito as a middle schooler. Don't worry, this is no spoiler for things to come - she just plays a very minor bit part anyway, being nothing more than a cameo. The interesting implication about it is that this already clarified at this point that Yaiba would be set at least two years before Chapter 1 of Magic Kaito.

General stuff

  • A few words about the title: The original Japanese name of the chapter is "Samurai ga ippai", an allusion to the movie Purple Noon (Japanese title: "Taiyō ga ippai", original French title: "Plein Soleil"), one of the favourite movies of Gosho Aoyama. He already alluded to that title with the second chapter of Magic Kaito Volume 1, "Keikan ga ippai", where even an antagonist named after Alain Delon appeared, who played the protagonist in Purple Noon.
  • Does the School Principal only remind me of a dog?
  • The "kuma" in Captain Kumazawa's name means "bear", that (and his build) probably is what prompts Yaiba Kurogane to call him a bear.
  • Takeshi Onimaru appears for the first time, whom we have also seen during the Kendo Tournament Murder Case (Volume 93, File 9-Volume 94, File 1 / Episodes 916-917) of Detective Conan. He even got his own keyhole on Volume 93. You'll see soon enough what's up with him. The "oni" in his name means "demon" or "ogre" in Japanese, by the way.

Plot

Yaiba Kurogane is on the verge of losing his battle against Kumazawa, as Mr. Sudou hoped for. Kenjuro Kurogane appears during the fight and gives Yaiba the advice to use the "Dance of the Wild Animal", which he does, allowing him to win the challenge - and with the side effect that it drives Kumazawa crazy, trying to kill Yaiba. The latter gets saved just in time - by Takeshi Onimaru, of all people.

General stuff

  • This is the last chapter of what the fandom calls the "Yaiba Arc", ending with him firmly established at school, but starting his rivalry with Takeshi Onimaru.

Yaiba celebrates his "victory" that evening, howling at the moon, while Onimaru digs himself out of the pit, swearing revenge...

General stuff

  • This chapter starts what the fandom calls the "Onimaru Arc".
  • The moment at the school infirmary, where Sayaka Mine treats Yaiba Kurogane's wounds he got from Takeshi Onimaru and warns him not to mess with him, is a recreation of an almost identical scene from Play It Again, the prototype for Yaiba, where Michiko Tsurugi does the same for Sanjuro Sakura and warns him about messing with Tatsuya Nakadai.
  • Yaiba's signature on the paper is really reminiscent of Kaitou Kid's signature, just drawn more crudely. :D
  • As soon as you see the traps Yaiba set up all around the school grounds for Onimaru, you start to wonder who really is the antagonist of this story...

Mistakes & Goofs

  • The moon phase randomly changes from Waxing Crescent Moon 🌒 to Waning Crescent Moon 🌘. The odd one out seems to be the first one, since every other appearance of the moon at beginning and end of the chapter is a Waning Crescent.

Plot

Takeshi Onimaru is still angry about what Yaiba Kurogane did to him at school and wants a revanche. He goes to the Mine residence, while Yaiba is on his way to the Onimaru residence himself, so both miss each other. While Onimaru causes commotion at the Mine's mansion and has to leave empty-handed again, Yaiba eats through everything the Onimaru grandfather offers him, meets his pet vulture Shonosuke again who followed him back from his home jungle and returns to the Mine residence just as Takeshi arrives at his house, again missing each other. When Takeshi notices what Yaiba's vulture did to his doves and Yaiba sees what Takeshi did to his tiger, both angrily turn back again, this time meeting each other on a pedestrian bridge...

General stuff

  • Can we also call these chapter "The Silence of the Doves"? :D
  • Ayame Onimaru's bangs fittingly resemble the horns of an Oni.
  • The moment Takeshi Onimaru looks around the walls inside Yaiba's treehouse kinda remind me of a certain scene from [[Wikipedia:The Shining (film)|Stanley Kubrick's Shining]]...
  • Yaiba Kurogane's pet vulture Shonosuke appears for the very first time, who also gets a brief cameo in Magic Kaito later on. I once read that, judging by Shonosuke's looks, he would actually be a female vulture - but I'm no expert about these animals, so you have to take this with a big grain of salt (and the fact that Gosho Aoyama didn't knew either back then :P), since he is also referred to as "he/him" in the series and I can find "Shonosuke" as a male first name only.
  • During Yaiba's flight on Shonosuke's back you can spot the skyscrapers of Nishi-Shinjuku in the far away distance... Where the heck does the Onimaru family live? This doesn't even look remotely like the core City of Tokyo anymore, but somewhere on the outskirts of it, somewhere further away in the Greater Tokyo Area. The Chiyoda Ward, which is later on implied to be where the Yaoya District is located several times, would be relatively close to these skyscrapers so... how far did Yaiba and Onimaru run? And multiple times at that. :D

Plot

Yaiba Kurogane finally gets the desired fight with an enraged Takeshi Onimaru, which seemingly leads them through half of Tokyo, creating lots of unnecessary property damage in the process. There's no real winner in the end...

General stuff

  • This could also be called "When Two Angry Sociopaths Meet in the Middle of the City"...
  • The old retiree couple very probably is an allusion to something. I've seen this is similar older couples several times in different Japanese media now, always with the same set-up, doing something calm and enjoying the day and suddenly the characters of the respective series plunge into the room (or right through it, in this case). I don't know if it's from any series, film, theatrical play or something, or whether it's just some kind of Japanese running gag in the national entertainment industry...
  • The road sign Yaiba Kurogane crashes into with the Ikebukuro District to the left and Shinjuku Ward to the right would mean that he and Takeshi Onimaru were fighting their way from the Wards of Nerima or Nakano (on the shared border of which Gosho Aoyama lived back then, close to Ekoda) in the direction of Bunkyō and Chiyoda (where the fictional Yaoya District later is heavily implied to be around).

Plot

Takeshi Onimaru is still driven to take revenge on Yaiba Kurogane, both starting to train relentlessy to beat each other. In a burst of rage during his practice in the private Dojo, Takeshi destroys an old family armor and discovers a trap door right under it, leading to a hidden cellar even he himself didn't know about before. Down there he finds two large statues of the Japanese Kami Raijin (God of Thunder) and Fujin (God of Wind), with the latter one holding a shimmering sword in his hands Takeshi's grandfather presents to him as the family heirloom Fujin-ken, the Sword of the Wind God...

General stuff

  • Or as I'd like to call it: "There's more than just Sushi and Cake in the Onimaru residence". The plot slowly thickens...
  • The tiger Kagetora finally gets his name (given to him by Sayaka Mine), derived from Kenshin Uesugi, whose birth name was Kagetora Nagao. "Kagetora" literally means "Shadow Tiger". Furthermore, you can spot the Daimyō Shingen Takeda on his horse on the TV, who was Uesugi's greatest rival. Yaiba Kurogane's armor on the chapter cover and the family armor in the Onimaru Dojo with the distinct crescent emblem also seem to be based on Takeda's armor. Shingen Takeda also plays a role in FILE.609 - 618 (Volume 59, File 5-10 / Episode 516-517) of Detective Conan.
  • Raijin and Fujin indeed are two important figures from Japanese mythology and deities in Shinto religion. They have pretty descriptive names - "Rai-jin" and "Fuu-jin" literally mean "thunder god" and "wind god". If you need an equivalent: Raijin can be imagined in function as something akin to the Thor of Japan. :P The swords do not really exist and are based on no real artifacts, but blades of the same name appear in numerous other (mostly Japanese) series and video games. Raijin and Fujin also play an indirect role in FILE.384 - 386 (Volume 38, File 2-4 / Episode 312-313) of Detective Conan.
