Inspector Nishimura voices his skepticism about Kogoro's narrative, pointing out that he did not witness the culprit physically jump out of the moving train. Acting on the possibility of the culprit escaping to a different train car, the police begin searching the various cabins. Nishimura finds a shotgun in Azusa's cabin for [[Wikipedia: Clay pigeon shooting| clay target shooting]] and fishing gear in Kaetsu's cabin. Yusaku deduces that the man who shot Keitaro was Kaetsu wearing a disguise to look like Asama. Kaetsu had bludgeoned Asama and broke the window sometime earlier in the train's journey. Using the cover of darkness, he passed a fishing line through Asama's belt loop and hung his body on the exterior of the train. The fishing line was then passed from Asama's cabin and attached Kaetsu's cabin door. The fishing line was then passed from Asama's cabin and attached Kaetsu's cabin door. After shooting Keitaro, Kaetsu fired bullets into Asama's cabin to make it look as though he just destroyed the window. He then shot several rounds towards his pursuers and used the time they were distracted to slip into the staircase beyond the cabin entrance. After doing so, he cut the fishing line attached to Asama's body, causing it to fall onto the tracks at the same time Conan and Kogoro discovered the broken window. Kaetsu reminds Yusaku that Asama's cabin door shut shortly before he escaped out the window, something that would not be possible for Kaetsu if he had supposedly escaped down a different corridor. Yusaku explains that Kaetsu linked an additional fishing line from the line attached to Asama's body to the sliding door with plastic tape. Once the original fishing line was cut, Asama's body weight would pull on the entire contraption, slamming the sliding door shut and ripping the taped lines off of their surfaces and out of the train. The plastic tape left on Asama's belt loop is proof the fishing lines had detached from both the body and the train's components. Kaetsu points out that the outlined trick could have been used by anyone. Conan then finds the Asama disguise he used when he shot Keitaro stuffed in Kaetsu's luggage.<br> | ||

Yusaku deduces that Kaetsu wanted to avenge his partner who died due to drug overdose. Specifically he wanted revenge against Keitaro who had sold her the narcotics, and Asama who had encouraged her addiction. Kaetsu had infiltrated Keitaro's jewelry store for reconnaissance purposes but split with Asama after their partner's death and decided to remain as an employee at the store. After noticing that Yusaku's unfinished novel matched his current predicament to an uncanny degree, Kaetsu likely sought to bring it into reality. He began by telling Asama about a plan to fake a theft at Keitaro's store, a plan he did not inform Keitaro about. When the oblivious Keitaro spotted Asama in the act, he earnestly rang the alarm bell, causing the thief to say, "it's not like I was told." Kaetsu would later manipulate both Asama and Keitaro into boarding the Hokutosei express via tips and blackmail, thus setting his murderous plan into motion.<br> | Yusaku deduces that Kaetsu wanted to avenge his partner who died due to drug overdose. Wedding Murder Case
File 212 - A Matching Set

Kazuha's scream attracts the rest of the mansion's tenants to the crime scene who express a variety of reactions such as shock, confusion, and in the case of Kaede, loss of consciousness. Heiji and Conan immediately begin investigating the windows, finding all of them locked. Ran, who had been watching the room's main window from the building's exterior, reports no unusual activity. Heiji then finds Shigematsu's bundle of keys left in his coat pocket. After learning that it contains the unique key to the room, he declares the case an impossible locked-room murder. Though Yurie floats the idea of a suicide, Kogoro debunks the theory, pointing to the missing murder weapon. Kikuhito displays a callous attitude towards his butler's death, intending to resume his wedding plans without alteration. Enraged, Sakuraba strikes him with his fists sending his client crashing against a glass window. Mikio takes Sakuraba's side, lambasting his son for his insensitivity. He reminds him that Shigematsu was Sakuraba's surrogate father following his orphaning and that the butler also served as an invaluable member of the family business for which he acted as Kikuhito's advisor. Kazuha lets out another scream, believing Shigematsu's body had exhibited movement. However, the family cat Rebecca appears from behind the body and shows its fondness for Yurie.
With news of the police's arrival, Conan and Kogoro accompany a cane-wielding Mikio downstairs, who tells them he permanently damaged his leg in the accident that claimed his wife's life. The trio is then greeted by a swarm of reporters who battle the police for entry into the mansion. After a brief scuffle, Inspector Megure, Takagi, and several supporting officers manage to squeak through, introducing themselves to Mikio.
Kogoro informs Megure about their preliminary findings. Takagi returns with several alibis, stating that all servants except for Sakuraba were having dinner at the time of the murder, narrowing the list of suspects to Mikio, Kikuhito, Yurie, Kaede, and Sakuraba. Megure commences the investigation by both ordering interrogations and body checks of the five suspects and also instructing his men to conduct a thorough search of the property for the missing weapon.

Some time later, Conan and Heiji stand at the mansion entrance and share their findings—both having noticed four peculiarities about the crime scene. First, the culprit removed the weapon from the body, thus evaporating the likelihood of suicide and increasing the odds of being caught. Second, Shigematsu's body was relocated from one room to another for no apparent reason. Third, only the room with the body had been illuminated. And finally, the cat's presence. As they ponder, they see Sakuraba asking Takagi if he can assist in the search for the murder weapon. The Sergeant refuses, and Sakuraba is soon after accosted by Kikuhito who throws him to the ground in retaliation for their previous physical altercation. Kazuha and Ran rush to Sakuraba's aid, the former noticing that he wears a crystal pendant identical to the one worn by Kaede. The girl's observation draws Conan and Heiji's attention, the two remarking that it may prove to be a pivotal key to solving the mystery.
File 213 - The Evidence...

The investigation continues as the police struggle to locate the missing murder weapon. With the property's impeccable security system diminishing the likelihood of an external burglar, attention falls on the five candidates. Megure explains that Mikio was waiting in his study for a pre-planned meeting with Shigematsu, Yurie was taking a bath, Kikuhito was reading a magazine in his room, Sakuraba was searching for the family cat, and Kaede claims to have been sleeping. The Inspector notes that Yurie had attempted to invite Kaede to take a bath but received no response when she called. A pair of forensic analysts then discover a faint bloodstain on a glass door latch. Heiji reasons that the culprit had opened the glass door with their bloodied gloves and exited onto the balcony. Conan finds a broken glass shard with a small perforation. Prior to Kikuhito slamming into the glass, the hole would have been positioned near a window grill, making it difficult to spot upon first inspection.
Mikio then enters the room and expresses his desire to hold a funeral service for Shigematsu—having him buried near his late wife's tomb. Heiji is reminded of gossip his mother had shared with him about the wife having originally been in love with Shigematsu. The wife had regularly visited the mansion to meet the butler but Mikio had misinterpreted her frequent appearances for a sign that she had romantic feelings for himself. Following Mikio's proposal, the two families greatly supported the arrangement and overwhelmed her into agreeing to the marriage. Conan admits he smells a simmering conflict. Heiji also says Mikio's story bears a striking resemblance to the rumors swirling about the coercive nature of Kikuhito's engagement with Kaede. Conan seemingly agrees with his analysis but shifts the discussion to the culprit's escape route. Conan pressures Heiji into tying a rope around his waist in an experiment to test whether one can escape to a lower level. Heiji effortlessly maneuvers around the third floor balcony and lands on the platform below. He then notices an object caught in the nearby tree canopy. As Conan leans over the railing to get a better look, he is caught off guard by Kikuhito and tumbles over the edge, barely managing to hold onto the ledge. Kikuhito is unable to help the boy due to his acrophobia, leaving Sakuraba to be the one to rescue him.

After reuniting with Heiji, the two boys ascend the suspicious tree to discover a bloodstained shirt tied up by a long thin string with a piece of tape stuck to the end. Opening it up, they find the killer's bloodstained kitchen knife. The two happily remark they have solved the mystery but still feel as though closure eludes them. Rain begins to fall, prompting Ran and Kazuha to call for them to retreat inside. Hearing the word "rain," the two boys are reminded of the initial state of the rain shutter. Their collective realization sparks an elaborate plan to bypass their lack of evidence.
Some time later, everyone is summoned to the crime scene where Heiji steps forward, declaring that he has solved Shigematsu's murder. He immediately turns to Sakuraba and names him the killer.
File 214 - Caught Prey

Heiji prepares a long thin string with a loop created at one end with tape. He exits the shattered glass door and restores the shard with the perforation to its original position lining the grills. He then places the string's loop around the latch and passes the string through the hole. From the outside of the door, Heiji pulls on the string which in turn maneuvers the latch to lock the door. The string is then removed from the room entirely by tugging on it with greater force. Furthermore, Sakuraba had attempted to destroy the evidence of the perforation by punching Kikuhito into the glass. Ultimately, Mikio cannot perform the outlined trick due to his injured knee, Yurie and Kaede are also incapable due to wearing dresses, and Kikuhito would not be able to exit onto the balcony because of his acrophobia. Thus, the only remaining suspect is the athletic Sakuraba. The servant is shocked by Heiji's accusation, exclaiming that he is innocent. Kaede steps forward and corroborates his plea, revealing that she had been accompanying him on his search for the cat during the time of Shigematsu's murder. Megure asks why she did not come forward with this information sooner. Heiji deduces that the two are secretly lovers, pointing to their matching pendants. Despite Sakuraba and Kaede's persisting denial over their involvement in the crime, Megure ushers the former away for further questioning at the police station, telling the latter that testimonials made by individuals with deep personal connections do not hold up in court. Kikuhito comforts a distraught Kaede, voicing his resolve to wait for her to eventually come around to him. Kazuha and Ran watch with concern as Heiji coldly labels Sakuraba a violent killer as he is led out the door. Megure suspends the investigation for the day, planning on resuming the search for the weapon tomorrow. With the case seemingly closed, Kogoro prepares to take his leave but is stopped by Conan who suggests they stay the night.

The next day, Kogoro and Conan see Heiji off at Tokyo Station. They recall Sakuraba and Kaede both showing a melancholic expression after hearing the news—their future now solely in their hands. Heiji then asks about Kazuha's whereabouts before hearing her pleading with Ran not to pressure her into their plan. He turns around to see Ran push his childhood friend towards him, dressed in a similar pinstripe shirt as his own. Embarrassed, Kazuha attempts to run to the bathroom to change into something else but is stopped by Heiji who says he does not mind, remarking that they look like siblings.

File 215 - The Northbound Train
Aboard the luxury overnight express train, Hokutosei, Ran reads a letter from Natsue Hatamoto who had sponsored their trip to Hokkaido. Kogoro reflects on his experiences on the ship where they last met Natsue, realizing that it was the first instance where he felt extreme drowsiness before awakening to a solved case.[1] The trio then agrees to head for the dining car. Upon exiting the cabin, Kogoro collides with an ill-tempered masked man who quickly walks away after recognizing the Detective's identity. The masked man, Yasuji Asama, is seen returning to his cabin in a sweat before commenting, "it's not like I was told."

As the train speeds through the night, Kogoro voices his contentment with the luxury experience. However, the individual behind him is of the opposite opinion. Jewelry store owner, Keitaro Izumo, reprimands his manager, Toshinori Kaetsu, about his inability to secure a better seat on the train. Kogoro vaguely recognizes Keitaro from media coverage about him single-handedly repelling an infamous thief from stealing his store's prized jewels. Fellow passenger and Furuito City mayor, Akishige Ishizuchi, joins their conversation and mentions the rumors about the robbery being staged for publicity. He cites the supposedly professional thief's many mistakes and stories about him saying "it's not like I was told," before fleeing the scene. Kogoro is then recognized by another passenger named Toru Aoba. He also notices a mysterious woman named Fumiyo Akechi standing at the entrance remarking about a "coincidence" before refusing the dining service and returning to her cabin.

After the meal service, Conan cannot shake the feeling of having experienced a similar case in the past. The trio also see Keitaro's wife, Azusa Izumo, fearfully scanning the train corridor before retreating back into her cabin.
At around 4:00 in the morning, the train enters the Seikan Tunnel on-route to Sapporo. Conan is still awake and in deep thought about where he experienced the similar case. Kogoro and Conan witness Asama fire several rounds into his cabin before turning to fire at them. Believing Asama had destroyed the train window in an attempt to escape, Kogoro pursues him. However, by the time the Detective pulls open his door, nothing remains in his cabin besides a shattered window. Conan, however, stands at the entrance in shock, having realized that the events illustrated in his father's unfinished novel are playing out before his eyes.
File 216 - Search The Train!?

The train is halted and Inspector Kyohei Nishimura of the Hokkaido Prefectural Police arrives at the lobby car. He hears the witness testimonials including Kogoro's claim about the culprit escaping through the shattered window.
Meanwhile, Conan tries to dial his father and ask for further details about his unreleased novel which he claims was lost in an accident. Fumiyo Akechi then appears at the phone booth, ominously placing her hand on the glass. Before Conan can get a connection, Ran arrives and returns him to the lobby car.

Nishimura mentions that Asama used to work in a group of three but temporarily suspended his activity after one of his partners died via drug overdose. With the killer found, Nishimura allows the train to continue its journey to Sapporo on standard speed.
With the train now in motion, Fumiyo attempts to call someone from her cabin but fails to receive a response. She hears a knock on her door and finds Conan on the other side. He accuses her of lying about her practicing equestrian, citing that she thought his use of the term "Boro (ボロ)" referred to old equipment and not horse dung.
File 217 - To Be Continued...

Fumiyo reveals herself to be Yukiko who says she boarded the train after seeing the news about Asama's botched heist. Noticing a striking similarity to Yusaku's lost story, the couple had called the jewelry store and found out that Keitaro was planning on riding the Hokutosei in six days time. However, without confirmation as to which of the three daily trains Keitaro intended to ride, Yusaku and Yukiko boarded different trains in hopes of stopping the murder. Yukiko expresses her regret about leaving for the bathroom at the time of the murder, asking Conan if he thinks she is responsible for the man's death. Conan asks about the culprit's trick, but is dumbfounded upon hearing that Yusaku himself had forgotten about its details. Yukiko explains that the unfinished manuscripts were stolen when Yusaku's editor was caught in a bank heist—a heist orchestrated by Yasuji Asama. Ran then finds Conan in Fumiyo's cabin and tells him that Kogoro is about to start his deduction show.

In the lobby car, Kogoro proceeds to outline his explanation for Asama's motivations. The Detective reasons that Keitaro had made a secret agreement with Asama where the thief will steal his prized jewel, resulting in Keitaro collecting the vast amounts of insurance money. They then planned for Asama to return the jewel to Keitaro in exchange for a portion of the collected money. However, when Asama enacted his end of the deal, Keitaro set off the store's alarm bells in an attempt to capture the criminal. In doing so, Keitaro would raise his popularity amongst the public enough to potentially becoming the winning candidate in the next mayoral race. Keitaro would later receive a call from Asama about conducting another exchange aboard the Hokutosei express, which would explain why Keitaro suddenly altered his travel plans from plane to train. An officer wonders how Keitaro found himself in contact with a nefarious criminal; Aoba infers it was after rumors circled about Keitaro selling narcotics. Conan agrees with Kogoro's assessment had the case been a standard sequence of events. But with such a strong resemblance to his father's work, he feels as though something is missing. He reasons that if one of Asama's former group is dead, the other may very well be amongst the passengers aboard the train. The boy notes that Asama's disguise could have been worn by anyone and that Asama could have been defenestrated from the train prior to Keitaro's shooting. His theories are quickly disproven when an officer informs Nishimura that based on police analysis, Asama fell from the train at 4:10, lining up perfectly with the witness testimonials. Another officer then states they have not found any shards of glass near the site of the body and that there was a crumbled strip of plastic tape in Asama's belt loop.
Hearing the news, Conan has a realization and rushes to Asama's cabin to search for a "mundane item." Upon finding it, he internally remarks that he has solved his father's trick. Yukiko soon arrives and expresses her joy in finally getting to see her husband's bruised ego. However, Conan begins to remember more lines from the lost manuscript describing a bespectacled wannabe detective who celebrated his victory too soon. Conan asks his mother about the character, which she distinctly remembers fell victim to his own hubris and was murdered by the culprit. Believing the story to be actively describing himself, Conan begins to have doubts about both his deduction and personal safety.
File 218 - The Last Station

Yukiko assures her son of his safety, stating that the character from the novel met their end because he brazenly confronted the culprit without evidence. Conan reveals that he too lacks evidence. He says that with the investigation focusing on Asama as the one and only culprit, it is difficult to justify an additional search of the passenger's belongings. Yukiko then suggests they lure the culprit out.
Returning to her Fumiyo disguise, Yukiko tells Nishimura and the gathered passengers that she saw something "long." She claims to have forgotten what it was but she will remember in due time, promising to inform the police when she does.
The train arrives at Sapporo Station where Conan and Yukiko set their plan into motion. With the culprit successfully taunted, Yukiko intends to walk around the platform until she is approached. If all goes as planned, Conan will stun the culprit and turn them in to the authorities. Yukiko plants a kiss on her son's cheek and heads off. Conan escapes Ran's supervision by pretending he forgot something on the train and runs off to follow Yukiko's movements. Noticing his mother is attempting to leave the station, he runs over to her only to discover that he has been following a different woman wearing the same outfit. Realizing he has lost his mother in the crowd, Conan desperately runs around and spots her on the edge of the opposite platform. He notices the culprit standing behind her and frantically tries to warn her. His attempt is cut short by a stopping train, leaving Yukiko defenseless against the rapidly approaching danger.

The next day, Conan accompanies his parents to Shin Chitose Airport where he proclaims his victory over his father, having solved his trick. However, Yusaku reveals that the trick the culprit used was supposed to be revealed as a diversion, with the true trick involving a different contraption that would have also disposed of the disguise. Yukiko comments on the romantic destiny of her husband rushing to her aid not a moment before potential tragedy. Yusaku expresses confusion, stating that he had been quietly waiting by her side for several minutes prior to the attack—wanting confirmation of the culprit's identity. He then proceeds to make a fitting pun that only he seems to find amusing.
