Episode "ZERO" The Shinichi Kudo Aquarium Case (エピソード“ZERO” 工藤新一水族館事件 ,Episōdo "Zero" Kudō Shin'ichi Suizokukan Jiken) is the 1187th episode of the Detective Conan anime. It was made to commemorate the anime's 30th anniversary.

It is another adaptation of the Aquarium Murder Case from the chapters 882-884 in the original manga, along with an adaptation of Awkward Couple.

Plot

The Aquarium Murder

In the middle of Shinichi Kudo and Ran Mouri's conversation in the shark area at the Beika Aquarium, Shinichi spots people gathered. Sensing that something is not right, Ran goes back to the entrance of the aquarium following Shinichi’s words, while he comes there and witnesses a person die due to a fatal stab wound to the heart.

Ran comes with an employee of the aquarium, whom Shinichi tells to call the police, seal the exit, and not let anyone touch the corpse. Megure and his subordinates arrive at the scene, where Shinichi analyzes how there was no scream from the victim when he was stabbed. The kid also reveals how he got some interesting information regarding the victim:

• He took the victim’s phone and called a random number, which got him the identity of the victim (Kunihiro Shumoto), and where he works. Everyone gets surprised by how the one Shinichi called simply gave the boy the information.
• Based on the receipt inside the wallet, which has a cup of tea, a cup of coffee, and a dolphin keychain, Shinichi knew that Shumoto was taking his girlfriend along. He also got the approximate body scale of the woman based on the perfume scent in Shumoto’s right shoulder.

And finally, with some tricks, he narrows the suspects down to three and has them interrogated by Megure.

Although all the suspects have video clips serving as their alibis, Shinichi figures out that Naho Ojiro is the murderer. He noticed that it was unusual for Naho Ojiro to take a vertical clip, since it would be hard to film long fish, like sharks, in their entirety. Moreover, no one seemed to avoid walking into the camera frame, as if they had not noticed the camera. This is because Naho hid the phone on her boyfriend's white cap without him noticing.

The evidence is the blood on her hand covered by her glove. While she used a plastic bag to prevent blood splatter when stabbing the body with the knife, the bag did not block all of the blood, and some of it had seeped onto Naho's glove. So she had to turn her gloves inside out, but that changed their color. Shinichi noticed this color change after seeing the photo that Naho took with her boyfriend.

Motive

Kunihiro was blackmailing her by threatening Naho that he would leak nude photos of her to her current lover, family, and workplace to humiliate her unless she paid him.

Aftermath

After the case, Shinichi and Ran were walking in front of the aquarium and talking. It started to rain, prompting Ran to put her hood up. Unfortunately, Ran's phone fell from her hood into a nearby drainage grate. Shinichi forgot to tell her that he had placed it there after testing how the culprit did the trick. Shinichi promises that he will buy a new phone for Ran, but after seeing that Ran is still upset, he suggests that they visit Tropical Land. Ran adds a condition: she will forgive him only after he pays for all their expenses from their trip to Tropical Land, providing she wins the next karate tournament.

Shinichi's Scout of Tropical Land

Shinichi checks out Tropical Land in advance to see where he and Ran should go during the date.

• Between the Mystery Coaster and the Dragon Coaster, Shinichi reminds himself that Ran is scared of ghosts. He nearly chooses the latter when a girl exclaims to her boyfriend that the Mystery Coaster was so scary, which convinces him to pick the Mystery Coaster.
• In the high castle of the Tropical Land, he is seen scouting something below when he sees a couple with a can of soda.

Scouting continues until night, and Shinichi has found the best locations to explore in Tropical Land. He communes across another fountain where he sees a couple, who the audience would recognize as Kaito Kuroba and Aoko Nakamori, enjoying ice cream, which interests Shinichi and adds this fountain to the upcoming date.

However, little did he know he would never have the chance to reach the fountain, and his destiny would be determined elsewhere.

Adaptation changes

Manga to remake changes

• The remake only adapts the flashback story with Shinichi and Ran, while the present story with Conan and Detective Boys is not adapted.
• The scenes where Shinichi explores Tropical Land are expanded compared to the manga version.
• The remake adds some lines during Kanoko's interrogation, where she asks Ran what she is looking at.

Original to remake changes

• In the remake, the culprit's motive remained unchanged from the manga, which is revenge porn, whereas the first adaptation had replaced it with embarrassing photos. However, the photos is not shown in the remake.

Trivia

• Nazo is used as an insert song during the scenes where Shinichi is walking around Tropical Land.
• Starting this episode, the door eyecatch has been updated to be a combination of CGI and 2D animation. A new Next Conan's Hint design is also introduced, featuring a remake of the first version of next episode title card with the addition of Ai Haibara.
• This is the third time that a case has been adapted for a second time in the anime, with the last being The Moonlight Sonata Murder.
• During the sponsor cards, the memorable theme songs chosen by the manga's original author and major voice actors are played. Those songs are, in order of appearance:

• Beika Aquarium is modeled after the Shinagawa Aquarium in Tokyo for the glass tunnel while the exterior is modeled after the Toba Aquarium in Mie Prefecture.
