Situation
Two days ago, some of the cyanide in the Teitan University research lab was stolen. In the present, Takagi stumbled upon a person who was holding cyanide, so he had him taken to the police station for interrogation. He then finds Conan and Kogoro walking on the street, so he comes for consultation about this particular case. Takagi mentions that the man kept looking at his watch for some reason, and that the amount of cyanide he was holding is less than the amount stolen from the lab, suggesting that the three still have time to prevent someone from consuming the cyanide that man put onto their consumables. The location is quickly narrowed down to buildings on their south, which is still too broad for them to find the exact target. Conan then asks Takagi for photos of the man, and one of the photos reminds Kogoro of a restaurant 500 meters away from them in the south called Namikawa. This is because the owner of the restaurant sometimes splashes nearby when she sprinkles water in front of the shop.
At Namikawa restaurant, the owner of the shop confirms that she did splash water on him by chance, and they find a sole building at the end of the road that he went before getting splashed according to the photo. Even though the shop owner mentions the building is actually abandoned, the three still decide to search inside it while the other policemen investigate by either asking pedestrians in the area or using the surveillance camera. They find a Beika Royal Hotel uniform inside the building, and have everyone inside the hotel not consume the foods/drinks. Even though a hotel concierge Yuka Izumi has confirmed to Kogoro, Conan, and Takagi that guests were told not to consume anything, Conan is uncertain whether the case is over or not, and has the police make a video call pointing at the culprit without him acknowledging. The video call shows he still looks at his watch every now and then, suggesting that he never intends to poison the guests. Conan wonders where Izumi went since she is not present. Takagi mentions she went to the locker room to take her prescription medicine, which Conan realizes to be where the man put poison in. Fortunately, Kogoro is able to stop her from consuming it using the microphone on the reception.
Following the forensics’ report about the medicine Izumi was about to take, the lab researchers’ testimony regarding the cyanide theft, and the experience she got herself with the theft suspect, a seemingly perfect report about him can be made: Three years ago, Minoru Fuwa, a Teitan University associate professor at that time, harassed a Beika Royal hotel concierge Yuka Izumi during her shift. Fuwa was reprimanded by another customer for his outrageous behaviour while his employer also learnt about this. He was forced to resign and his wife dumped him, which led to him stealing cyanide two days ago to take revenge for the people that caused his misery. Izumi then sees off Kogoro, Conan, and Takagi as they are about to return to their desired locations. She mentions “once again, you have…” when talking to Kogoro before she stops midway and informally thanks the three for saving her.
