Koji Sametani (鮫谷 浩二 ,Sametani Kōji?) was a police detective and a character in the anime franchise Detective Conan.
Background
Koji lying dead on the ground after being murdered.
Koji Sametani and Kogoro were former colleagues at the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department and both often went for after-work drinking sessions. After Kogoro quit the force, Sametani remained, and was later promoted to inspector. His official post was unknown, as he was in fact working undercover at the criminal affairs division's reform preparation office, under inspector Suga.
Personality
Sametani is a charismatic and laid-back detective, and does not worry much about his personal hygiene, nor about his habits, as shown from his messy office. He however had a keen mind and quickly managed to find a lead in the case related to the Public Security Bureau's hacking of the National observatory in Nagano Prefecture. He was also very close to his girlfriend, who had a hard time grieving his death, and well liked by his peers.
Appearance
Sametani is sometimes shown in police plain clothes, with the jacket removed. He is also shown in the blue police uniform in the police database. He is a tall man with closed eyes and thick eyebrows. He is mostly seen smiling or being pensive. He has brushy unkempt hair with sideburns, as well as a stubble from not shaving.

Plot overview
While investigating Atsunobu Hayashi, he stumbled across a case from a few months ago when Kansuke Yamato of the Nagano Prefectural Police was injured in an avalanche. Knowing that Kogoro is well-acquainted with the former, Sametani gives him a call at night from his office and both convene to meet the next day at Hibiya Park, close to the Metropolitan Police headquarters. Sametani arrives early at the meetup location, but before he sees Kogoro, he is shot to death by Hayashi, who knew he was investigating him. Kogoro, Ran and Conan arrive just at the moment he is shot and they pursue the helmeted Hayashi, but fail to catch him.
Following Sametani's death, his funeral is organized and following that, his junior detective Sawatari retrieved his personal belongings and handed them over to his girlfriend.
