Jewelry stores across town are being robbed, but Conan's young friend Ayumi is excited. The crimes bear a striking resemblance to the events of a certain magical girl anime she's enjoying, and she's hopeful that she'll get to meet a "PreCure!" if the thieves show up again. Cure Answer appears in the episode, and Conan seems understandably surprised.

Situation
Conan, Haibara, and the Detective Boys are on their way home. Suddenly, Genta mentions his dad reading a newspaper about the recent robberies that are causing a disturbance, which Ayumi thought to be caused by the Phantom Thieves’ Guild from PreCure. Haibara says that it is not, and the culprits claimed themselves to be the Santos Thieves’ Guild instead, who specialize in theatrical crimes.

Haibara continues, in the first robbery that they claimed credit for, they disguised as police officers and walked right out with the stolen jewels; in the second crime, they pretended to be Kamen Yaiba; in the third robbery, they chose to be Kaiju Gomera and went on a rampage, but were immediately exposed.
In the fourth case, they pretended to be Kaitou Kid and tried to frame him. Conan thinks that he must have been really pissed off when he read the news about the fourth robbery of the Santos Thieves’ Guild.
Since the Pum-pum-pum-pum-pumpkin is rumored to be the next target, the kids decide to have two of the five to take turns guarding the area around Kaneko Jewelry Store everyday. Ayumi and Mitsuhiko are responsible for the first day of guarding, and it’s just a normal day with one visitor. In the second day of guarding, Conan and Haibara are discussing the fourth incident, whereas the thieves only sent the letter after it happened and the letter was full of misspellings, when a teenager (Anna Akechi) approaches the two and asks which way leads to the Kaneko Jewelry Store. On the third day guarding the area, Ayumi and Genta notice a woman taking pictures outside the store, so Ayumi informs this to Conan, and decides to follow the woman once she leaves the place with Genta. The two see her walking out from a burger shop with probably food supplies for her accomplice, then they see her making a call at the construction site, stating that she and the others will strike on the next day. Ayumi and Genta follow up to an abandoned warehouse where she goes inside. However, inside the warehouse are four man enjoying the food bought by the woman instead of the woman herself. Before the two can decide what to do next, their friends have already arrived with the police officers called by Conan to subdue the criminals.

Even though the criminals were subdued and Kaneko Jewelry Store was assumed to be safe, Ayumi senses that something is not right, and asks Conan to call detective Chiba so they can see the faces of the four criminals that they had caught. From the image Chiba sent, Ayumi points out that the woman she and Genta followed is not in between the four. Conan deduces that the four people caught just now were pawns hired by the Santos Thieves' Guild to lure the police, this is because he saw a mask that is too obvious for a group of thieves when he and the others were at the warehouse.

Episode numbering
Unlike other episodes, there are different ways the episode was labeled. On the official website and Netflix, the episode is labeled as Special Episode (特別編, Tokubetsu-hen).[1] In the Weekly Shōnen Sunday magazine preview, it was labeled as 30th Anniversary Special (30周年記念SP, 30-Shūnen Kinen Supesharu).[2] On Crunchyroll, the episode is labeled as Episode P1. While the international version labeled it as a regular episode (as episode 1262).[3] Interestingly, a few social media posts by animators involved with the episode labeled it as episode 1203, suggesting that it was internally counted as the 1203th episode during production.[4][5]
Production

The Detective Conan X Star Detective PreCure! collaboration project started with the Pretty Cure! producer, Masaya Aramaki, having interest in seeing both series connect with each other, due to its installment's detective theme and how he's a big fan of the Detective Conan series. Despite his doubts, he approached the Star Detective PreCure! staff about the crossover idea, half-jokingly saying "It'd be fun if we could do this, right?". The staff would be interested at the idea, along with TMS Entertainment and Yorimuri TV staff. Additionally, Yorimuri TV was interested at transcending the limits of the broadcasting stations with the crossover, since Star Detective PreCure! airs on TV Asahi.
Masataka Todo, the producer of Detective Conan, admits that it isn't unprecendented for studios and production companies to have collaborations, but noted that a collaboration with a high broadcasting station would be a "huge ask". And noted that the crossover between two series was a success thanks to the tireless effort of many parties involved.
During the proposal stages, the PreCure! producer Koji Kawasaki admits that he was skeptical at first with the collaboration as to whether it'd happen. As the collaboration advances in development stages, he admits that he remembers being hit with a strong wave of "Oh, is this really happening?". He was interested in seeing two different works be merged together and intrigued in using different approaches to take advantage of each series's setting. He also wanted the characters to be intrinsically involved in each other's stories, highlighting its self-contained nature.
Yasuichiro Yamamoto, the current Detective Conan director, was also enthusiastic about the crossover idea, although he had concerns about world-building and tones differences between the two series (as Detective Conan is a mystery action series, while Pretty Cure! is a magical girl franchise), as well as the world-building rules of Detective Conan in particular. When the script is shown to Gosho Aoyama, he insisted that things such as "magic and fantasy" do not exist in Detective Conan universe.
Masaya Aramaki admits that the staff had difficulties handling the transformation aspects of PreCure! within the Conan universe, and how far they could incorporate fantasy. Originally, Anna Akechi would not do any transformation to Cure Answer, as she appeared in the script. After this idea was scrapped, the staff had to figure out how to incorporate Cure Answer into the story, without breaking the rule, as they think making her a cosplay "would be too cold".[6] He said that they managed to explore options, and as result, they thought on Kaito Kid be the one disguising as Cure Answer for the episode. Aramaki admits that it was pretty fun working in the crossover special.
The staff did end up placing stuff for the viewers to feel they're watching Detective Conan in Star Detective PreCure! episode, out of respect for the series.[7]
Yamamoto says that he'd like to incorporate the appearances for other Pretty Cures, and hopes that the story would be realized in the future.
Trivia
- The Pretty Cure episode showed in the beginning is directly based on the eighteenth episode of Star Detective PreCure!, The Detectives Assemble, which was a crossover episode with Detective Conan, part of the collaboration.
- This marks the first time Kaitou Kid played a major role in an anime-original episode of the main anime.
- At the start of the episode, Conan was reading a book that resembles The Red Right Hand by Joel Townsley Rogers.
