The Super Digest Books (スーパーダイジェストブック ,Sūpā Daijesuto Bukku) (SDB) are released after every 10 volume of Detective Conan manga. The book contains a recaps of cases in the 10 volumes of the manga, keypoints in the manga, and an interview with Gosho Aoyama.

Hello, Aoyama here!

Once it starts coming out, it never stops—70+!! (Laugh)

What first comes to mind from the 70+ is the “Shiragami-sama Legend Murder Case”! To tell the truth, even in the artwork, I thought I was drawing the real Shinichi to look cool, and the imposter to look a bit shady… (that was my intention (Laugh)) but… could you tell?

Next is the “Ōfuku Family Murder Case”! I wanted readers to think of The Inugami Clan by Yokomizo Seishi, or Holmes’ The Hound of the Baskervilles, but it was actually The Hakkenden! (Laugh) There were so, so many characters, and the character designs alone took me an entire day to finish— I remember thinking, “I’m already out of face pattern ideas~~” (Laugh).

But honestly, what was even harder was the “Red Wall Murder Case”!!! This one also had many characters, but more than that— Detective Koumei from the local precinct! I thought, “Wouldn’t it be cool if I had him constantly quote sayings of famous Chinese figures?” That part was fine, but… finding quotations that fit each scene just right was super~~ tough!! Thanks for waiting — 80+ is finally here!! (Laugh)

What I most want to talk about from the 80+ is, of course, the huge case collected in Volumes 71–72: “I confessed right in front of Big Ben… I really messed up, Shinichi!!” The truth is, I came up with this episode 18 years ago, while I was watching the Wimbledon match between Steffi Graf and Kimiko Date live on TV. Late in the second set, when Graf was getting pushed back, a fan in the stands suddenly shouted, “Hey Steffi~~! Marry me~~~ ♥” And Graf replied: “How much money do you have~~?” Naturally, the entire stadium burst out laughing! And so I thought, “Wow, the idea of a player talking back to the crowd in the middle of a match is hilarious! Someday, I’m going to have Conan do the same thing — in a huge London case!!” …That’s what went through my head (Laugh).

After that, we have the appearances of Sera-chan and Amuro, and including the two of them, the all-star cast of the “Bell Tree Express Murder Case”!!! The first time I ever saw the original, Murder on the Orient Express, was on a rental video. I rented it late at night, brought it home, and watched it all fired up, thinking, “I’m gonna solve it before Poirot does~~~!!” But… I couldn’t figure out the culprit at all. Just before Poirot gathers all the passengers for the big reveal, I stopped the tape, rewound, and spent about three hours thinking and thinking, yet I couldn’t solve a thing… So I gave up and played the video again — and then: “EVERYONE is the culprit!?!? That’s insane——!! Poirot is sooo cool~~!! Someday I wanna make an all-star mystery like this~~~!!”
…That was back when I had just entered university. So this episode is something I’d been warming up for 30 years! (Laugh)

There are so—so many things I want to talk about in the 90+, I don’t even know where to start… First would be “The Scarlet Return,” when Akai came back to life, I suppose?

Originally, I planned to reveal the trick 2–3 years after making it look like he died, but I never expected it would end up taking 7 years… Well, Holmes also fell at Reichenbach Falls in “The Final Problem” and didn’t return until “The Empty House”— which took 9 years and 10 months, so it’s fine, right? After that, there’s the “Hattori Screwed Up on Trick Bridge Case,” Kid vs. Kyogoku’s Airborne Showdown, the “Kawanakajima Serial Murder Case”, Yumi & Shuukichi’s Marriage Registration Investigation Line, and “Did Akai and Amuro Kill Scotch!?” Case, and so on and so on… There’s absolutely no way I can write about everything (laugh).

I never thought this would actually come out — BLACK!! (Laugh)

Since this book is about the Black Organization, there are all sorts of things I want to talk about, but there are so many things I’m not allowed to reveal that… I really can’t say much (laugh).

For now, let me talk about their names… When I decided that the code names would all be based on alcoholic drinks, the very first character who got a name — surprisingly enough — was Vodka!! (Laugh)

While I was drawing, I muttered to myself, “This guy really feels like a Vodka…” and then Yamada-kun, the assistant standing next to me, said: “Then, why don’t we make this guy ‘Gin’?” So I replied, “Okay, let’s go with that,” and that’s how Gin got his name…
Then, some time later when the black-clad woman appeared, Tani-kun, another assistant, said: “Let’s make her code name Vermouth!’’ So again I said, “Okay, let’s go with that!” —And thus, the names were decided in a very casual, sloppy way (Laugh).

Speaking of the Black Organization… After I watched the test screening of “The Raven Chaser,” I ended up in an elevator with a pair of fans — a mother and her young son. Suddenly, the boy declared to his mom: “When I grow up, I’m going to join the Black Organization!!”

I thought, “Whoa, whoa, whoa…” So in order to show that Conan also has many strong and cool allies, I decided to revive Shuichi Akai in a stylish way, and to have Tōru Amuro infiltrate the Organization as a Public Security Bureau (even though he was originally planned to be a villain (Laugh)).

So in a way, the reason these two are so active today… might actually be thanks to that boy in the elevator (Laugh).

Hello, Aoyama here!

So it really came out after all — LOVE+ ♥

There are mountains of things I’d like to talk about when it comes to romantic-comedy stories,
but the episodes that were actually based on real events are surprisingly few.
One of them is Heiji and Kazuha getting handcuffed together,
and ending up having to go to the bath and toilet together —
the “stinky closeness incident” ♥!

The truth is, it was inspired by something told to me by my assistant’s wife.
Her father is a high-ranking police officer, and she said:
“When I was little, my two younger sisters were playing with my dad’s handcuffs that were at home,
and they got stuck, and we had to go to the bath and toilet together — it was a huge ordeal.”
Using that story as a hint, I created the episode!

Later, the two sisters found out they had been used as manga material,
and according to my assistant’s wife, they got angry and said:
“We’d rather be handcuffed to a cool guy like this!!” (Laugh)

By the way, the name ‘Kazuha’ was something I borrowed from that assistant’s wife♪

Also, among the couples that appear in my manga, the most unexpected one is probably Okita Soshi and Moroha Kurogane (Yaiba younger sister), right…
Actually, I once thought:
“Conan’s serialization will probably end quickly anyway, so maybe I should start planning a continuation of Yaiba.” And one of the story ideas I had was a Romantic Comedy between Okita and Moroha ♥

Of course this one was going to come out — JUSTICE!! (Laugh)

When you think of the police and the FBI, well… it’s gotta be rom-com, right? (Laugh) …That said, Rom-Com involving the FBI is almost nonexistent (there is romance, but still…). Police romance, on the other hand, is absolutely overflowing♡
Starting with Takagi & Sato, then Yumi & Shuukichi, Shiratori & Kobayashi-sensei, Chiba & Naeko, Megure & Midori, Amuro & Azusa? (Laugh), etc…

Among them, the only pair doing rom-com outside Tokyo is Nagano Prefectural Police’s Kansuke Yamato and Yui Uehara. But the truth is — Yui was originally supposed to be the culprit! (Laugh)

Because of that, Yui still looks suspicious all the way to the end (well, she was originally the culprit, so of course… (Laugh)), but personally, I think she turned out really well!

Since she became the heroine, I stuffed in lots of rom-com with Kansuke, and when I added Koumei Morofushi, who’s also a strategist-type character, Nagano Prefectural Police ended up becoming a super thick and heavy police lineup… (Laugh)

Honestly, if Kuroda had stayed in the Nagano police at that time, I feel like justice would be executed in Nagano even without Conan… (Laugh)

First is Ran’s lemon pie! Using apple pie felt too ordinary, so with the simple thought of “Since it’s a first-love-related story, let’s make it lemon,” I decided on lemon pie…

Hello, Aoyama here!

Plus—at long last, we’ve reached 100+!!! (Laugh)

When you think of 100+, you think of: Heiji vs. Okita in the kendo showdown! Kid vs. Okiya, and Kid vs. Koumei + Heiji (Laugh) in the “see-through-the-disguise” battles! Heiji vs. Shinichi (Conan) in the deduction showdown where Heiji gets swept up by Momiji’s sweet talk! Vermouth vs. Mary in the London confrontation! Amuro vs. Wakasa-sensei in the pitch-dark battle! Wakasa-sensei vs. Inspector Yamamura in the “Urusei Yatsura showdown”? (Laugh)

…Basically, it’s packed full of showdowns!!

Among them, the ones that stand out most are the long arcs: the School Trip Arc and the Sea Monkey Island Arc!

Back when I was in high school, we didn’t have a school trip, so I never drew one— but thanks to that, I was able to use it as the perfect stage for a big romantic-comedy episode for Shinichi and Ran. In a way, maybe not drawing it until now was destiny… (Laugh)

To draw this arc, I binge-watched all kinds of school-trip scenes from dramas and anime, so by the time I finished drawing it, I felt like I had gone on a school trip too… (Laugh)

By the way, the kiss scene where Shinichi pulls Ran by the necktie— voice actress Wakana Yamazaki praised it, saying, “It felt like something out of a foreign movie♡,” and I was all warm and fuzzy for a while, thinking, “Thanks~~♪” (Laugh)

And then there’s Sea Monkey Island! I went there to do research, in the rain— to Sarushima, the real-life model for the island!! Looking out at the dark, gloomy sea… Walking through the muddy, rain-soaked ground… Leaning on the cold, rain-dripping handrail of the pier… What came to mind was: “Camel… after swimming through this rough sea to finally reach this island, he gets forced underground, and then gets shot off this very pier, falling back into the ocean… That’s insanely cool♪” (Laugh)

And finally, the “Sazanami Series (Ripples Series),” where Akai’s “naked festival” happened!
When it became an anime, Takayama-san, Yamazaki-san, and Hidaka-san all performed with such cute voices that I was super satisfied♪
