Season 14

The fourteenth season of the Detective Conan anime consists of the episodes aired in the year 2009.

It begun airing in January 19, 2009 and finished airing on December 26, 2009, with a total of 41 episodes. There are 29 manga-adapted episodes and 12 anime-original episodes. There were breaks totaling to 3 weeks, with remastered reruns broadcast for 8 weeks.

Shinichi receives mail from a village of a case he solved a year ago. Conan, Kogoro Mouri, Ran, along with Heiji and Kazuha decide to visit the village and realize that the village hates Shinichi for his deduction of a double suicide relating to the head of the village. Conan heads to the cottage where the letter mentions but turns out to be a plot to trap him there. Later, Conan realizes the cold medicine he took was actually the prototype antidote to the APTX 4869 and that he will become Kudo Shinichi again. Later, Kudo Shinichi is found in the lake with no memory. Afterward he is found at a murder scene of a news reporter who was going to reveal a secret of Shinichi. Apparently, the murder is related to the mysterious person in the forest, the Shiragami. Conan turns back into Shinichi again.

Ran wakes up in a hut in the woods and discovers someone has treated the wounds from when she fell. Eventually, Kazuha finds Ran and calls Kogoro in. Heiji radios them from the next room. They all go over and find that the room is filled with pictures of Shinichi with knife marks in them. Heiji figures out the case, and they head back to Hinohara's house. There, Heiji reveals that Shinichi is actually Makoto, who used plastic surgery to look like Kudou Shinichi. Shirigami-sama steps into the room and is revealed to be Shinichi. After Makoto is arrested, Ran, Heiji, Shinichi, Kazuha, and Kogoro walk back toward the hotel. Before they can reach it, APTX 4869 starts to wear off, and Heiji helps Shinichi escape to the bathroom to change back. Haibara had been hiding there, and she gave Shinichi another antidote. Then, she says to return to Tokyo before he changes back if he wishes to keep his identity a secret. The group are all heading home in Kogoro's rental car, when they discover a man who was strangled within his car on the highway. They stop to investigate.

While investigating, they narrowed down the suspects to three drivers. After solving the case, the antidote to the APTX 4869 begins to wear off. Ran holds onto his hand, wanting to hear his answer to her question, saying she will never let him go. Ran asks Shinichi to never let go of her hand.

During a trip, Professor Agasa's car breaks down and the Detective Boys are stranded. A man passes by but makes fun of their misfortune. He enters his mansion and suddenly an explosion happens. Inspector Yuminaga arrives on the scene, and investigates along with Conan and the Detective Boys. Conan says the murderer is the man's wife. Ran continues to hold Shinichi's hand just about he is going to turn back, she is suddenly tranquilized by Ai and wakes up holding Conan's hand, Conan's identity remains a secret, as Ran belives Shinichi let go of her hand and ran away,however Ai explains if you look closely the sweater Conan is wearing has been cut from the cuff all the way to the he and is held together with safety pins,that proves he put on the sweater while Ran was holding Shinichi's left hand, showing he didn't want to let go of Ran's hand

He reveals that static electricity was used and that she had been trying to kill him for three weeks. Afterwards, she reveals that her husband caused her father to die by refusing to help him.

Mouri, Ran, and Conan are at their usual diner but learn that Azusa Enomoto's brother is a suspect in a murder. She says he's innocent. Afterwards, the police investigate and keep an eye on her. She later escapes Takagi's sight to meet her brother. There they learn the person who arranged their meeting is the culprit who plans to kill them both. With Conan's help, the police are able to solve it and capture the culprit before he could harm anyone.

Mouri, Ran, and Conan are attending a play when Conan overhears one of the actor's murder plan. He is later found eaves dropping and placed in a coffin. Later he over hears the other two actors who also plan a murder, meaning a murder triangle has been formed. After they seemingly all die, Conan is revealed to manage to save all of them having escaped from the coffin through a back door.

Eri takes Ran and Conan to a dinner with a friend who is a karate expert, but later her friend's husband is found murdered. Inspector Megure arrives at the scene, and investigates along with Conan, Eri, Takagi, Chiba, and Officer Tome. Conan figures the suspect is the friend, but her alibi stands solid.

Ran decides to phone her father to ask for help, but he is busy playing Mahjong. Later Eri realizes that a tape recording was used to create the alibi of her husband. The wife then reveals that her husband cheated on her with a friend's wife, but Eri revealed he did so because he was jealous that his wife was in love with the husband of the women he was cheating on. Later, Conan finds out Mouri purposely helped his wife solve the case.

On the way from school, Conan and Ai Haibara by chance find Gin's car on the street and decide to investigate. Conan places a tracker in their car. Haibara spots Gin and Vodka across the street on their way back to their car. Conan and Haibara quickly get out the car and hide outside while they leave. Conan keeps track of what their doing through his special glasses, however, Gin eventually catches on to the tracker and destroys it as well as learns that Sherry is still alive. They are eventually led to a movie director's party at the Haido City Hotel where a chandelier falls on someone (Mr. Nomiguchi) while in the dark, thus, ending the episode with who's responsible for the murder. In continuance from the last episode, everyone is wondering how the chandelier fell in the first place. Conan knows it's Pisco of the Black Organization, but the police are stumped. When Inspector Megure can't hold anyone anymore, everyone at the party flees toward the doorway. In the mix of all the commotion, Haibara is kidnapped by someone and confined to a wine cellar somewhere in the Haido Hotel. Conan tells her to drink some sake that will temporary turn her back to an adult to help her escape. Will Haibara be able to escape the clutches of Gin and Vodka? In the conclusion of Conan and Ai's encounter with the Black Organization, Ai is trapped in a building with Gin and Vodka after she is kidnapped by them (previous episode). Now she must try to escape (Ai is in her adult form temporarily), but it won't be easy. She makes her way to the roof only to encounter Gin and Vodka who both shoot her down and almost kill her until Conan arrives on the scene. He uses his special bow tie to sound like an older person who distracts them, as well as shoots Gin with a needle, while she jumps down the chimney and barely escapes death. Gin shoots himself in the arm to keep himself awake while Vodka attempts to shoot Conan, but he escapes. Conan and Ai eventually encounter Pisco back inside, but due to an accidental fire, the two get away before Pisco kills them. Gin and Vodka arrive and Gin kills Pisco without hesitation for failing to finish the job. Near the end of the episode, a new female member named Vermouth discusses the dilemma with Gin and Vodka. Introduction of Pisco, Naomichi Mugikura, and Vermouth, the latter becoming a very important character a few years later in the series. Conan and Ai suspect that a Black Organization member, Pisco, is going to be at a hotel to plan a murder. Haibara takes the alcohol to turn her back into her adult form, Shiho Miyano. Gin shoots Shiho, who is saved at the last moment by Conan. Gin kills Pisco, and Vermouth is shown at the end, discussing the situation with both Gin and Vodka. Haibara's past is once again explored, and it is hinted that she has some sort of history with Gin, who takes very special interest in finding her. Gin once again takes very special interest in Shiho.

When the Queen of Vespania and her son are murdered in a hunting accident, Conan must protect the princess following an assassination attempt. Coincidentally, the legendary gentleman thief Lupin III and his friends are after the queen's crown. When the two realize that the recent death wasn't an accident, they must work together to discover who killed the royals and stop him before the princess suffers the same fate.

Shinichi Kudo uncovers a murderer along with the police at a party. Later, Shinichi and Ran Mouri take a trip together to an amusement park, where a man is murdered during a roller coaster ride. Shinichi deduces that the people in front and behind the victim are the suspects. Shortly investigating the scene, he reveals the murderer to be the man's ex-girlfriend. After the case Shinichi spots two suspicious black-clothed men. He decides to follow them and witnesses a deal taking place but is attacked from behind. The two men, intending to kill him, force him to swallow newly developed poison. Most of the main characters are introduced. First appearance of Shinichi Kudo, Ran Mouri, Kogoro Mouri, Juzo Megure, Gin, Vodka, Ayumi Yoshida, Mitsuhiko Tsuburaya, Genta Kojima, and Hiroshi Agasa. Shinichi turns back into a 7 year old boy after being poisoned. As Shinichi parts from Ran at an amusement park to check on some suspicious activities, Ran feels like she's seeing Shinichi for the last time (which will happen to have been somewhat of a premonition). The men in black poison Shinichi after he is discovered spying on them. Shinichi and Ran are presented as childhood friends and are shown to share a strong bond. Many other important facts about the characters are revealed (such as Shinichi's usual involvement in the police affairs).

Shinichi wakes up as a young child due to the effect of the poison. After running into Professor Agasa he decides he must hide his identity or those men in black will come back to finish off those connected to him. Shinichi renamed "Conan Edogawa" is placed in the care of Ran and her father, Kogoro Mouri, who owns a detective agency which may allow him to gather information on the men in black. Kogoro receives a case to find a man's kidnapped daughter, Akiko. Conan drops subtle hints for Kogoro to solve the case revealing Asao, the butler, to have kidnapped Akiko. A phone call reveals Akiko has been kidnapped again. Conan follows the clues from the phone call and is able to locate her. After arresting the kidnapper, Akiko reveals she asked Asao to fake a kidnapping in an attempt to get her father away from work to spend time with her. The father asks Asao to arrange a vacation for him and Akiko. Kogoro, happy to have solved a difficult case, allows Conan to stay. First appearance of Conan Edogawa. Shinichi moves to Ran's place and calls himself Conan Edogawa.

A person who murders people with a hammer dubbed "Hammer Man" has be spotted after a murder heading to an apartment. Sato and Takagi stalk out the apartment. After realizing there was no activity in the apartment, they enter the suite and find a man who's hanged himself. They then realize that the man who hanged himself is not the hammer man and that the culprit has impersonated a delivery worker and escaped. While Sato and Takagi are on a date, Sato suddenly asks Takagi to give her "a HOT kiss RIGHT NOW" only to be interrupted by Conan. When asked if they were pretending to be lovers as cover for a stakeout, Sato answers with a resounding "YES," to the shock of a disappointed Takagi. Later, during an investigation, Takagi discovers that Chiba and Sato would sometimes pretend to be lovers during their stakeouts as well. When Takagi asked if anything would happen during the stakeouts, Chiba mentions something that happened was "very soft".

Inspector Megure, Sato, Chiba, Takagi, and Tome investigate the scene along with Conan, Ran, and Sonoko. After investigating the apartment, they find out the hammer man was actually a woman. They manage to capture her before she escapes, with some help from Shiratori. Later, Kiyonaga Matsumoto is awaken by a nightmare from a past case. Bothered by what happened between Chiba and Sato in stakeouts, Chiba eventually tells Takagi that sometimes they held hands and Sato's hands were very soft hearing that's all what happened with Chiba and Sato and what happened between him and Sato (kiss incident) he realizes that because it was him (Takagi) that Sato requested something like a kiss, only because it was him.

A blind rich woman named Shoudo Kuromi asks Mouri to help her find a boy who saved her life in the past; the only clue is that the boy should have a large scar across his torso. She has been able to narrow it down to two people and they are both staying at her house. Conan meanwhile notices the police are stalking the woman's house. Kiyonaga Matsumoto tells Kogoro that a serial killer from a past case may be there as the killer also has a scar across his chest. During a bath, Mouri notices that the butler also happens to have a scar across his torso.
533	584	The Scar that Evokes the Past	May 9, 2009			V64 - F4~6 (667-669)	Sushi
After going over the characteristics of the boy, Conan realizes who it is. During the midnight snack, Conan uses Kogoro to solve the case. Conan reveals the boy who was honest would never have taken the money. He reveals the identity of the boy to be the butler, Taisuke Houya; The boy's nickname was revealed to be "gari" because he liked to eat Gari. Later, Kiyonaga barges in and accuses one of the men with the scar as a serial killer from a past case. The man reveals that he copied the scar from a strange man a few years ago whom they realize is the serial killer. The next day, a criminal psychologist named Douji Hiramune challenges the serial killer to reveal himself. He happens to leave in the same apartment as Ayumi where the Detective Boys are staying with. Ai later reveals to Conan she saw a mysterious man whistling a song, which is the serial killer's trademark. After revealing the truth about the scar of boy from the past, Conan curses his misfortune as his current situation he "can't tell the truth (his feelings for Ran) even if he wanted to" unaware he is thinking aloud.

Conan finds Hiramune murdered with the letter "Z" burned into his back. The police department arrive and are confused as the letter they were expecting was "N" as the previous victims had the letters "E", "S", "W" and were thought to be Cardinal direction. They notice the Hiramune's left hand was on his keyboard on the keys "Ctrl" and "C" and his right hand holding the wire of his mouse. Takagi and the Detective Boys decide to accompany him and his interrogation of the victim's relatives. Conan than realizes the victims share one thing in connection, Mahjong. Sato and Takagi make a promise if they arrest the serial killer in the next 3 days they will go on a date to a hot spring.

Later, Takagi comes to the conclusion that Kibo Dokurou is the serial killer. Conan notices something is strange about Hiramune's dying message, and realizes his message indicates the person who murdered him was a copycat killer. Conan reveals to Sato that Hiramune was actually the serial killer from the past. Conan reveals that Nabei Eiki is the murderer. Takagi who was ordered to bring Eiki to the police station was taken hostage by Eiki. Takagi is shot in an attempt to subdue Eiki from shooting the police. Takagi is later revealed to be saved by a mahjong tile in his shirt pocket. Takagi and Sato share their first kiss, with Takagi in the hospital. Takagi and Sato kiss for the first time!
536	587	The Secret of the Vanished Masterpiece	May 30, 2009			TV Original	Nameplate
The Detective Boys decide investigate a spooky Château when a man starts to live there. They find the château and its garden have been remodeled. The next day, the man living in the château, Rokuro Wada is revealed to have died. They learn from Keiichi Yagami, Wada's agent who sells his paintings, that Wada had been working on a masterpiece at the château for three months. They decide to search the château for the painting but to no avail. Afterwards they are visited by Wada's old aunt Saeko Takato and her caretaker Mina Eguichi who reveals that Wada sent them a letter telling them to visit the château tomorrow to view the masterpiece. Eguichi reveals Wada's masterpiece is going to help Takatoo regain her memories which she lost from an accident a year ago. Conan finds a photo revealing a château Takato owned in the past and realizes what Wada's masterpiece is. Conan reveals the masterpiece would be complete tomorrow. The next day, the flowers at the château have bloomed revealing a scenery similar to the one in the photo. The scenery causes Takato to regain memories of her life.

After a day at the museum, the Conan and his friends find a piece of paper with symbols and the word "Oro" written on it. Conan believes that it is a treasure map after he discovers "Oro" means gold in Italian. Following clues, they find gold coins hanging from the ceiling of an abandoned building, but they interrupted by a gang from the Italian mafia. With Conan's quick thinking, they are able to capture the men. Later, Ayumi gives Conan a kiss, thanking him for saving them as Mitsuhiko and Genta stare jealously. Creation of the Detective Boys.
537	588	Kaitou Kid vs. the Strongest Safe (Part 1)	June 13, 2009			V64 - F11 ~ V65 - F2 (674-676)	A warning letter
Jirokichi Suzuki receives a letter from Kaitou Kid which reveals that Kid plans on opening Jirokichi's impenetrable safe, the Iron Tanuki. The letter however is not written in Kid's usual style raising the ideal that an imposter is after Jirokichi's safe. Sonoko invites Ran, Kogoro, and Conan to Jirokichi's house. After examining the security of the safe, Kaitou Kid's card, in its usual style, is found confirming Kaitou Kid's plan to open the safe. Conan suspects that Kaitou Kid is one of the three newly hired workers of Jirokichi. Jirokichi, however, continues to proclaim it to be the work of an imposter, causing Conan to suspect Jirokichi's behavior. Kaitou Kid goes after Suzuki's safe. Heist: Iron Tanuki

The nearly hired maid and adviser inform Conan of Jirokichi's strange behavior. They reveal that after dinner, two places are always missing and Jirokichi always brings his cane with him to the safe. Jirokichi asks the maid for a hand and they head to his room. Jirokichi leaves with his bodyguard for a drive. Shortly after, an unconscious Jirokichi is found tied up and his room and a note of Kaitou Kid is found on the safe. This causes the whole police force that are guarding the safe to abandon their position and chase after "Jirokichi". Conan meanwhile enters the room with the safe revealing the maid was Kaitou Kid in disguise. Conan reveals the first message by "Kaitou Kid" was actually done by Jirokichi asking for Kaitou's kid assistance. Conan also reveals Jirokichi purposely placed suspicion on himself in order to clear the area of cops so Kaitou Kid can open the safe. Inside the safe is revealed to be Jirokichi's dog, Lupin. Kid does a favor for Suzuki.

While playing hide-and-seek in the park, Ayumi Yoshida hides herself in the trunk of a car and falls asleep. When she wakes, the car has already left the park, and Ayumi finds herself with a head of a girl wrapped in newspapers. Conan uses the new radio transmitters the Detective Boys received from Professor Agasa to get clues and find where the car is heading. They boys finally catch up to rescue Ayumi, but not before they find out the girl's head was prop for a play. Having knocked out one of the actors, Conan and his friends must take over his part. Agasa invents the Detective Boys Badges and Turbo Engine Skateboard.

While on a walk, Conan, Ran, and Kogoro heard a gunshot from a house. While heading to investigate, Kogoro was unable to catch a masked man that runs past them. Conan finds a dead man with dried blood and white powdery substance on his shirt. The man, Hisaemon Yaguchi, is revealed to have died hours ago and his three sons are the suspects to the murder. Inspector Jugo Yokomizo arrives at the scene. After investigating the three suspects, Conan tranquilizes Kogoro and with his voice changing bow-tie, reveals that the murder was an accident. Conan reveals that the eldest son Rokuro Yaguchi witnessed his father's death through the webcam. The video shows that Hisaemon had a heart attack and accidentally shot himself. Conan also reveals that after his son tried to rob his safe, he cried in sorrow as evidenced by the salt on Hisaemon. Once the police were able to open Hisaemon's safe, it is revealed Hisaemon signed a loan contract to continue supporting his sons.
540	591	The Day Kogoro Mouri Ceased Being a Detective (Part 1)	July 11, 2009			TV Original	Flashlight
Kogoro receives a request from a client named Ryouzou Gamou to find a witness to confirm his alibi. On the sixth day Gamou calls Kogoro and tells him he has lost hope in him. The next day, Gamou is found hanged in a forest an hour in distance away. Inspector Megure, Takagi, Chiba, and Tome all are investigating. The police suspect it to be suicide but Mouri reveals it is a murder, as Gamou could have killed himself at home if he wanted to. After interrogating Gamou's nephew, Kyousuke Arai, Kogoro returns home to find news reporters who question Kogoro about the suicide revealed to be murder. The next day, Kogoro heads to the horse track and meets up with detective Isao Takeoka, the detective who falsely accused Gamou five years ago. They work together and investigate Ryouzou's ties and end up at his nephew's house. They interrogate Arai and reveal his motive for the murder would be the inheritance. The next day, Arai is found in his house hanged and Kogoro decides to close his detective agency by removing its sign.
541	592	The Day Kogoro Mouri Ceased Being a Detective (Part 2)	July 18, 2009			TV Original	Voice
The Police continue their search for the suspect of the murder. Kogoro is forced by a fat woman who is intrigued with him to go jogging. He defeats robbers after her jewelry and is escorted to the hospital. Once there, Kogoro overhears a patient discuss Gamou and his medical test which took place on the day Kogoro met with him. Kogoro investigates and heads to Gamou's company to retrieve a recording of the victim's voice. However the culprit steals the recording from Kogoro and escapes. Conan tells Kogoro that Gamou filed a complain to a company and that the company has a recording of the phone call. Kogoro realizes who the suspect is and calls Takeoka to meet with him. Once there, Kogoro reveals Takeoka has been impersonated Gamou half a month before meeting him and reveals Takeoka was also the one calling Kogoro pretending to be Gamou. He reveals Takeoka to be the murderer. Takeoka reveals that his wife was the witness who accused Gamou of his crime five years ago. On the day his wife died, she apologized to Takeoka for her mistaken accusation. Takeoka realized Gamou was indeed the criminal five years ago and desired revenge against him. After telling Kogoro his story, Takeoka proceeds to jump off a cliff but is saved by Kogoro.

After fishing, Conan and the Detective Boys are picked up at a fishing dock by Subaru Okiya while the professor is busy. On the way home, they decide to explore an island named Ikkaku Rock and come upon a dead woman's body. Conan deduces, from her wristwatch bearing her name, the woman to be Akamine Hikari, the daughter of the head of a famous company. Conan reveals that Akamine was murdered and reveals that her dying message were the names of the fishes "Mackerel, Carp, Sea Bream, and Flounder" in Kanji. Akamine's diving companions Ohto Rokusuke, Aosato Shuuhei, and Kaita Yasuji arrive on the island and reveal that Akamine went missing on their last diving trip but they thought she was okay due to her message, "Take care of the rest".

While Inspector Jugo Yokomizo interrogates the three, the Detective Boys try to figure out the meaning of the dying message. Conan realizes that on Akamine's watch, the word "Fish" is scratched out and finds out the meaning of the dying message. Conan reveals Aosato Shuuhei is the name spelt when the Kanji of Fish is removed from the dying message. He reveals Aosato cut Akamine's diving regulator and leaves her on the island after promising he would return with help. After she died Aosato returns and exchanges the regulator to hide the cut and uses Akamine's regulator to leave, causing her lipstick to appear on his face. Aosato confesses his crime and reveals Akamine caused the death of their past companion Yoshirou and he murdered her in revenge. Aosato then unveils his knife and holds Ayumi hostage demanding an escape route. Subaru disarms him and saves Ayumi and Aosato is arrested. Later that night, Subaru is seen drinking bourbon whiskey. Okiya is again shown drinking bourbon in Kudo's house.

The body has green crayon on it, and strange markings. Can Conan figure out the culprit, as well as their trick?

Kogoro, Ran, and Conan are all driving on a foggy road, when they meet up with a road block with a police force, led by the recently promoted Inspector Misao Yamamura. Yamamura explains to them that there is a white FD that is challenging people to race their car in the fog, and the FD somehow is able to float in the air. The FD is thought to be driven by a "witch," based off of a legend from years before. Yamamura's grandmother even claims to have seen the witch, waving to her after the race between her and the grandmother was over. Ran calls Yumi and Sato for advice, but neither of them have any leads. Kogoro, Conan, and Ran decide to go next time themselves, to face off with the FD. There they finally meet the witch, who escapes them. Conan and Kogoro deduce that the "witch" may be a man or a woman, and Kogoro calls Yamamura to tell him to stop all cars that have passed that are white FD's. A set of three FD's are stopped, and they all have two people in them. Can Conan figure out the identity of the witch, as well as the tricks used? Ran suspects Conan to be Shinichi for a moment once again.

Thanks to the title of a song that Kogoro's idol, Yoko Okino, is playing at a television show later that week, Conan is able to figure out the trick of the mysterious witch. With the help of Inspector Yamamura, he is able to capture the witch! However, after the witch and their accomplice escapes, Yumi and Sato show up to help out, and capture the suspects. Also, Yumi reveals a funny tidbit about Sato's past: Sato is the "witch" from four years ago!

A man is shown accidentally shooting the President of a large gaming company, and then fleeing the scene. Conan, Ran, and Sonoko are at a mall, where they are using Conan to get a discount on some cake. While there, they spot Chiba and Takagi looking for suspicious individuals. Conan eavesdrops on them and Inspector Megure. The man who shot the President has kidnapped a little girl in the mall. Thanks to Conan's help, the girl is freed, but the man kidnaps Conan! Ran and Kogoro do their best to figure out Conan's location, and Kogoro goes on the hunt for clues. Kogoro learns that the President was not very popular in his company, and was angering three individuals in the company, including the shooter's friend, a secretary, and the Vice President. However, Conan discovers that the man is not armed, and is not going out of his way to treat Conan like a hostage. While trying to talk to the man, the lights go out in their hideout, and the man is shot by a mysterious individual. Conan and the man escape the hideout, and are saved in Agasa's car. Conan believes that this man may not be a criminal after all...

After avoiding violent situations with Ran and Kogoro, the man pleads his case to Conan. Kogoro, Conan, and Agasa all begin an investigation. Conan discovers the missing murder weapon. The man claims that the gun he used was not a real gun, but an air gun. Conan deduces that the man is not a murderer, and was used by somebody else to do their dirty work. Kogoro interrupts Megure's investigation in his office the next day, and Conan and the shooter show up, with the shooter pretending to have kidnapped Conan. He wants the shooter the stick the gun to Conan's head. Conan believes the real murderer will try to save Conan, because he will know the gun isn't real. Conan's plan works, and he stuns Kogoro to announce the real murderer.

Agasa promises to take Haibara, Conan, and the Detective Boys to a fancy sushi place. Instead, they go to a place with revolving sushi. While there, they see a man act arrogant and rude to various people in the restaurant. Later, that man is killed from poison. Who could have done this, and how could they have done it? All three suspects have a perfectly good chance to poison the man.

After some investigating, Conan is able to solve the case. He has Agasa put on a "deduction show," and the Detective Boys assist Agasa in his deductions. The killer reveals that this murder was an act of revenge over the man having humiliated them, making their wife leave them.

There is a nation-wide Kojima-san contest, where all Kojima's are able to participate. There is a stamina, writing, and singing contest. Genta's father is surprisingly one of the three finalists. However, the man in charge of the contest is found murdered before the final round can begin, having fallen to his death from a flight of stairs. Inspector Megure, Detective Takagi, and Detective Chiba arrive at the scene. Conan and Inspector Megure believe that one of the three Kojima finalists is the murderer, which includes Genta's own father! Can Conan figure out the murderer? Also, Conan does not know which of the three is Genta's father! First appearance of Genji Kojima.

Conan tells Agasa and Haibara to keep the Detective Boys away from the scene, as Genta may be upset by his father being a suspect. Through an investigation, Conan figures out who the murderer is. When the murderer is confronted, Genta's father reveals himself, as he is a very proud man who hates liars. Genta's father, Genji, is then shown walking with Conan, Haibara, Agasa, and the Detective Boys.

Inspector Megure and Detective Takagi are interrogating a man who was arrested for murder. They bring in Kogoro, as he knew the man from a murder trial years before. The man is on parole, but on trial for the murder of a crooked police officer. Kogoro tries to get him to talk, but he remains silent. So, Conan and Takagi visit the crime scene to try to figure out what really happened. Could the interrogated man be hiding something?

Conan accidentally sprained his ankle when he saw Ran talking with Dr. Araide, and it still hasn't been healed. The girl, Haruna, is discovered to have been missing for a while, and now it seems that Ran has gone missing as well! To help in the search, Heiji and Kazuha also show up. Heiji, Kogoro, and Conan investigate, while Kazuha takes control of the kids. Later, we see that a man has knocked out Ran, and kidnapped her! Will Conan find Ran? Conan injures his leg because as he slipped down the stairs as he saw Ran together with Araide sensei.

Could these people be members of the Black Organization? Conan re-assures Haibara and Agasa that things are fine, and the man and woman are revealed to be none other than Inspector Kansuke Yamato and Detective Yui Uehara! They have come to Mouri and Conan to ask about a case that they cannot solve...

Yamato and Uehara takes Kogoro, Ran, and Conan to a mansion. Uehara reveals that the man was owned by a rich man in the past; The man one day decided to search for five talented people and gave the five a room in the mansion until they have reached their dreams. Euhara reveals that six people, Shusaku Akashi, Aoi Kobashi, Naoki Midorikawa, Shoji Yamabuki, Takuto Momose, and Shiro Naiko, referred to each others as colors that sound alike to their names. They were called Red (赤 Aka), Blue (青 Ao), Green (緑 Midori), Golden Yellow (山吹 Yamabuki), Pink (桃色 Momoiro), and White (白 Shiro) respectively. Yamato reveals that the doors in the mansion swung outward and that someone used a pile of boxes filled with books to trap Akashi inside a room. They examine the room to find one wall of the room painted red and in the center of the room a white and black chair placed back to back and nailed into the ground with the white chair facing the red wall. Yamato's rival, Taka'aki Morofushi, who's name can be read in Chinese as Komei, arrives and reveals he was the first to find the body as he was delivering flowers to the late Aoi who died from a heart attack in the storage room of the house. Conan reveals that the culprit knew the door would open outwards in the house and the location of the boxes of books which means the culprit is one of the three people who use to live in the mansion. First appearance of Taka'aki Morofushi (Komei).

Yamato tells Komei to take Ran and Conan with him to investigate the four suspects. They learn that Akashi and Aoi were avid chess fan and that Aoi was adored by all her friends. After investigating the four, they believe Naiko is involved in the murder in some way and travel to his apartment to arrest him. Upon arrival, they find that Naiko has been strangled and that the culprit had spray painted the wall in front of Naiko red. Komei then heads off to investigate the case on his own.

Komei investigates the crime scene at the mansion and realizes who the culprit is. Before he could text his answer to Yamato, he is knocked unconscious by the culprit. The building is set ablaze and Koumei is saved by Euhara. At the hospital, Conan and Yamato deduced from Komei's incomplete text "The late Komei" was a saying which was alluded from the Battle of Wuzhang Plains; the moral of the story is that one can have great influence even after death. They believe that the culprit murdered Akashi to avenge Aoi's death. Conan and Yamato then realize what Akashi's dying message means.

Komei regains consciousness, together they conclude that they lack the evidence to capture the culprit and thus decide to empty the Empty Fort Strategy to lure the culprit out. Using the strategy, they created the sense that no officers are guarding Naiko's apartment and successfully lure Naoki Midorikawa. Yamato reveals that Akashi had katakana spray painted on his wall indicating Naoki to be the murderer. Naiko, who was meeting his old friends to ask for money, finds Akashi and having misread the message began to spray it over with red paint cans. He realized that the message was indicating Naoki, takes a picture of the message, and uses it to extort money from Midorikawa. Conan reveals that Akashi had prepared the room to indicate the murderer to be Midorikawa even if the message was painted over. Conan reveals that the white chair was facing the red wall while the black chair was facing the white wall. This corresponds to chess piece colors where white makes the first move. Conan explains that the message tells a person to look at the red wall then look at the white wall; Doing so causes one to see a green complementary color afterimage which indicates Midorikawa. Midorikawa confesses and explains that he blamed Akashi was Aoi's death since she got a heart attack from frantically searching for a portrait of herself. He reveals that Akashi had painted over the portrait since he lacked the money to buy more painting supplies and had Akashi told her, she would not have died. Komei reveals that Akashi was working on a new portrait for her in secret and had intended to surprise her on her birthday. Midorikawa having realize his mistake breaks down in tears.
