Situation
For the past two years, surgeon Masayuki Ogawa has been receiving anonymous toys and money once a month. He asks Kogoro to determine who's the one sending the gifts. During the investigation, Ran begins to suspect that Conan is actually Shinichi.
+
After visiting an exhibit on hidden treasures Conan and his friends find a piece of paper with symbols and the word "Oro" written on it. A treasure hunt ensues but does not discover much. Conan, initially not interested in the children's treasure hunt finally realizes that the paper is a treasure map after learning that "Oro" means gold in Italian. That night, Conan determines that the symbols refer to neon light signs on buildings.

Evidence
Evidence
* Two years ago, an anonymous person started sending Ogawa boxes full of toys, along with one million yen, on the first day of each month. And on Feburary 19, Morning Glory flowers get delivered to the hospital where he worked.
+
* There's no doubt that Dino Cavane and his accomplices are responsible for the theft of the Maple Leaf coins, but Cavane refuses to say where the coins are hidden.
* Usually, the money came with the toys, but on the 25th time, the money came separately in an envelope alongside a letter. Saying they have paid off 25 million yen, and is going to complete their side of the transaction.
+
* Conan and the Detective Boys find a piece of paper with odd symbols drawn on it and the word "ORO" as they leave a museum.
* The toys did not have barcodes on it, and the fact that some of them were beat up and broken when Ogawa recieved them. Suggested all the toys are at least a few years old.
+
* After looking at an Italian-Japanese dictionary, Conan realizes "ORO" means "Gold" in Italian. Conan is shocked to realize he and the Detective Boys really did find a treasure map.
** Coincidentally, as Conan was playing with one of the toys: a handheld video game system, he discovered that there were save files in the Onimaru video game that was named Tomoya Ogino.
+
* Conan is puzzled why someone who is Italian would make a reference to a Japanese street name near Tohto Tower.

Conan deduced that the presents were not given to Ogawa in gratitude, but with grudge and hate. The toys belonged to Tomoya and the flowers were sent as a memento of the boy. And the meaning of the letter is that they will take the life of Ogawa's son as well.

After calling Ogawa's wife they found out someone else had picked up Yuta instead of her, they rushed out to find him, they eventually did find him in a park near his kindergarten school with an unknown man. It turns out that this man was Tomoya's father, Ogino. Who planned to end Yuta's life on the same day, at the same age that Tomoya died. And paying Ogawa by using Yuta's life insurance money.

Conclusion
Conclusion
Conan was able to stop the murder by using his Power-Enhancing Kick Shoes to kick a nearby soccer ball towards Ogino. And after Ogino seeing Yuta's gratitude for the toys, was reminded of his son causing him to break down and admit that he knows Tomoya's death wasn't really the doctor's fault. Ogawa however forgave Ogino and decided not call the police, citing that, as a father, he understood how devastating it is to lose a son.
+
Conan realizes that the shapes on the treasure map really refer to the shapes of neon signs near Tohto Tower. It wouldn't make sense for someone who does not speak Japanese to make a reference to a Japanese named street, but rather draw pictures of a recognizable objects they saw.

After the case, Conan asked Professor Agasa to call Ran as Shinichi later using the Voice-Changing Bowtie to deceive her to into believing that Shinichi and Conan are not the same person. It works but Ran did notice that Shinichi was talking like an old man.</spoiler>
+
Conan and the Detective Boys manage to find the location of the missing Maple Leaf coins, only to be confronted by Cavane's thugs. Thanks to Conan's quick thinking, Conan and the Detective Boys manage to knock the thugs unconscious and run to the police.</spoiler>

List of differences between the manga and anime
* In the manga, this story takes place after the Luxury Liner Serial Murder Case, as Ran gets a letter from Natsue who mentions that she and Takeshi are living a more quiet life on the ranch. Natsue tells Ran to give her regards to her "detective boyfriend", which sets up the story. The anime instead starts with Ayumi, Mitsuhiko, and Genta asking Ran about Shinichi and whether he is her boyfriend.
+
* An entire portion of the story is left out of the anime where Ran takes Conan, Genta, Ayumi, and Mitsuhiko to Tohto Tower. She recalls a time when she and Shinichi visited the tower and when he bought her a cold drink, which he put up to her cheek. Conan does the same thing, which prompts her to ask him about his true identity (as the manga version takes place after the The Shinkansen's Bomb Case). Conan responds by stating that he is Kamen Yaiba. The scene in question would later appear (ironically) at the begining of the fourth movie Captured in Her Eyes which Ran has a flashback too.
** Additionally, Ran's recollection of the past cases included a flashback to "Luxury Liner Serial Murder Case" in the manga only.
+
* In the manga, Genta envisions that the Italian gangsters will shoot him, and imagines himself lying in a pool of his own blood. The anime substitutes a less graphic and more stylized image, with a miniature Genta being riddled with colorful, cartoon-like gunshots.

+
* In the manga, the 4th sign in the paper is a bowtie instead of an umbrella in the anime. The word "ORO" and the fish sign is in different sides.
Continuity
+
* In the manga, Conan notices ahead of time that they are being followed by the Italian gangsters, so he tosses the map pretending to know nothing about it and sends the kids home. After the gangsters leave, Conan is revealed to have made a copy of the map and uses it to try and find the treasure but the kids figure him out and force him to let them cooperate.
* This is the first case Ran gets suspicious of Conan. The second case this happens is in The Cornered Famous Detective! Two Big Murder Cases.

The Coded Map of the City Case (大都会暗号マップ事件 Daitokai Angō Mappu Jiken?), known in English as Fish Marks the Spot in Funimation's English release and as The Case of the Coded City Map in Netflix release, is the 4th episode of Detective Conan anime.

It adapts the Chapters 36-39 of the original manga. It was first aired in January 29, 1996, while the remastered version was aired in June 6, 2009.

Situation

After visiting an exhibit on hidden treasures Conan and his friends find a piece of paper with symbols and the word "Oro" written on it. A treasure hunt ensues but does not discover much. Conan, initially not interested in the children's treasure hunt finally realizes that the paper is a treasure map after learning that "Oro" means gold in Italian. That night, Conan determines that the symbols refer to neon light signs on buildings.

  • Resolution

    Manga to anime changes

    • An entire portion of the story is left out of the anime where Ran takes Conan, Genta, Ayumi, and Mitsuhiko to Tohto Tower.
    • In the manga, Genta envisions that the Italian gangsters will shoot him, and imagines himself lying in a pool of his own blood. The anime substitutes a less graphic and more stylized image, with a miniature Genta being riddled with colorful, cartoon-like gunshots.
    • In the manga, the 4th sign in the paper is a bowtie instead of an umbrella in the anime. The word "ORO" and the fish sign is in different sides.
    • In the manga, Conan notices ahead of time that they are being followed by the Italian gangsters, so he tosses the map pretending to know nothing about it and sends the kids home. After the gangsters leave, Conan is revealed to have made a copy of the map and uses it to try and find the treasure but the kids figure him out and force him to let them cooperate.

    Trivia

    • This episode marks canon day 8 of Shinichi's life as Conan.
    • Dino Cavane is modeled after Al Capone.
    • A remastered version of the case was aired in June 6, 2009.
