News about a person named Kimiharu Nishikido, who was suspected of match fixing, was beaten to death with an upside-down shogi board missing a leg near his corpse, catches Conan's attention. While talking about the term “yaocho” (match fixing), Conan, Haibara and the Detective Boys meet Shukichi Haneda by chance. Conan also asks him whether he had played shogi with Nishikido before, with him saying yes. Shukichi then says goodbye to them without noticing that Yumi has been watching him since she suspects that he has been cheating on her. She also proceeds to take Conan with her so no one would suspect her, but she accidentally reveals herself and Shukichi later has to explain what has been going on, thus resolving the misunderstanding. The five arrive at the apartment where another shogi player, Kosuke Hishinuma, is waiting. However, another shogi player named Yasukiyo Genda who has been in the apartment, didn’t answer the bell, so they have to use the spare key brought by Mina, only to find that he is dead with the upside-down shogi board with two legs removed, Shukichi later is seen thinking of something after he touches the furnitures nearby, probably the culprit, maybe? Mina Katsumata is introduced. Yumi tails Shukichi of suspecting having an affair. However, it is revealed that Shukichi is holding a Shogi practice session with younger Shogi players.   Shukichi was adopted by Haneda's family to fullfill Kohji Haneda's dream.

Takagi and Sato arrive and start questioning the others. It is revealed that Nishikido was the one to begin this session, furthermore, the group also has a depressed member named Yuhei Kishimoto, most likely because another member who also a professional shogi player named Kinji Uyru, committed suicide. Sato and Takagi are discussing whether if the suicide has something to do with the 2 recent murder when a fire at Kishimoto’s house catches their attention. Takagi and Sato arrive at the scene of the fire and meet Inspector Yuminaga, who wonders why Conan is here looking at the shogi board missing 3 legs. On the next day, Conan receives a call from Yumi stating that Shukichi has been missing since last night, so he calls Akai to help him find Shukichi, who is revealed to have talked with the culprit yesterday to convince him to turn in to the Police.   Shuichi appears.

Akai Shuichi (only with a hat and sunglasses as a disguise) picks up Conan with a Subaru car in front of Ramen Ogura. However, Shukichi has probably shut his phone down knowing that he’d probably get abducted. Luckily, the two brothers have methods that help them maintain contact while keeping Akai’s present a secret to others. Will this help save Shukichi while the present of Akai remains hidden ? Shukichi is unable to contact his mother Mary. Shukichi wants to introduce Yumi to his mother. Shuichi appears without his disguise to save Shukichi.

Agasa is taking Conan and the Detective Boys to skiing when they meet Takeru Yokoyama and Kengo Ishibashi, whose car got stuck in the snow, so Agasa’s group decides to help them out. When Agasa is having a rest due to some health issues, Conan and the Detective Boys become the witnesses as Ayumi saw Ishibashi stab Yokoyama to death. However, as no one believes them and Ishibashi tries to shut their mouth forever, they have no choice but to run away with their sleds when Ishibashi is calling for someone, which accidentally causes them to be lost in an area with no phone service. Agasa feels very worried as he can’t contact Conan and the Detective Boys.

The resort staff begin making a missing child announcement while Agasa leaves a message for Conan. While hiding in a cabin, Conan luckily gets a phone signal so he and the Detective Boys contact Agasa to tell him about the situation, but the snowstorm becomes more intense, preventing further communication and making the hideout less safe. So they decide to go out and find another cabin that may have a telephone that uses landlines to make another call. After all the struggles, they think that they are safe now when suddenly the snow from the roof causes Conan to have flashbacks of Quarter of Silence.

One day a man was jogging and finds a dead body. He calls the Ambulance but worried about the mans life, decides to run to the nearest bus station. Because of his actions he is considered the main suspect. Takagi comes to the case and with Conan's help, solves the case. He proves the mans innocence and captures the culprit. It turns out the Manger's dying message was for the culprit saying he should always try and smile.

Conan, Sonoko, Ran, and Sera along with Amuro decide to go to a sound studio to sing songs. Upon arriving there they find no space rooms available, so they decide go down and have a rest, where members of a girl's band are arguing about their performance. The guitar player and the other members are criticizing each other. After some time, when everybody gets into the rest room, the drum player is found dead on the drum with a rope mark on her neck. Because of the angle of the security camera, the police and Conan can not know about the situation about the murder clearly. Scotch is introduced. Sera officially meets Amuro for the first time and is suspicious of him, thinking she has met him before. Sera recalls when Scotch teaches her guitar, and Amuro briefly meets them there (she does not officially meet him, though).

When the investigation countines on, the bass player of the band mentions a deceased lead singer in the band. She and other members give Conan, Sera and Amuro a video of the band over the phone. The detectives even solve the case when the police are still trying to find the culprit. The culprit used the line of the drummer's hat to strangle her and put her on the drums, and is revealed to be the keyboard player, who managed to use a bottle full of water with sleeping pills to let the drummer asleep, even stated that the drummer's dislike of the former lead singer, which led to the latter's death. The keyboard player is then arrested. Scotch was an undercover MPD Public Safety officer, who was allegedly killed by Akai. Conan confirms that Akai Shuichi is Sera's eldest brother. Also, Sera knows that Akai is FBI.

The story continues one month afterward when Rei and Matsuda quickly become good friends. In the martial arts class, Date suddenly recalls about his father who was a patrol officer but resigned due to injury after he beats Rei in the fight. Later that night, Matsuda, Kenji and Hiro go to the bike shop where Matsuda saw a man with a strange tattoo that reminded Hiro about his past, however, the conversation ends quickly as Hiro gets traumatized when he tries remembering the scene. Then Kenji remembers having seen Date’s father being beaten by someone else in the past. Meanwhile, Date and Rei go to the convenience store to buy some stuff. Date also reveals to Rei about his father’s past, however, they end up being kept hostage in a bank robbery that looks somewhat similar to Date’s father. Will they get through this ? First appearance of Chihaya Hagiwara The story take place 7 years ago, when Amuro and his friends attended the police academy.

Ayumi wakes Conan up as soon as the Detective Boys and Agasa see the strange SOS moose signal when Agasa is taking them home. The man who made the signal when tied up is Masaru Danno, he then tells the Police and others what has happened. The Police somehow receive this from an anonymous as well and later receive a report about an armed robbery at a jewelry store. Conan seems to be suspicious of Danno so he, along with Agasa and the Detective Boys decide to follow the case.

While investigating a strange man named Kanieda, who seems to be hiding something when Conan, Haibara and the Detective Boys met him, they see him going with Takagi in a car. However, his name is Eiichi Usui, and he admits that he’s never seen them before and he is a main suspect of another case. The next day, they finally get to meet Kanieda in the hospital as he was hit by a car, they also get to hear about his life. Then Conan knows what has been happening recently, right?

On the way to the Karaoke after the five have been in a party reminded previously, Hiro sees a girl whom he had attended the funeral in the past after they see the old man Kenji helped earlier. So the next day, Hiro and Date, who has been following the sooner, go to the bike shop again to ask about the man with the strange tattoo, but he refuses again anyway. Tomori later appears and mentions Irie, who matches their description, while discussing, a car somehow attached behind a truck catches their attention. However, the truck driver is seen passing out while the truck keeps accelerating. The story also reveals Kenji’s past and why he and Matsuda were in the bomb disposal unit. The story take place 7 years ago, when Amuro and his friends attended the police academy.

Conan must both monitor the police investigation and prevent Sera from stealing the APTX antidote that the boy accidentally revealed earlier. Masumi finds the APTX antidote from Conan and tells Mary, who tells her to steal it if possible. Mary cries when she realizes her husband might be gone for sure. Vermouth disguise as Tsutomu. Mary's flashback of meeting Tsutomu at Vauxhall Bridge.

The Detective Boys are in a puppeteer camping trip, where they are practicing for a school puppet play. At the same time, a serial killer has been spotted near the area's of the camp. While at the camp, the students disappear with their puppets, leaving the Detective boys alone. Mitsuhiko assumes that their teacher is the serial killer. After they disappear, only Mitsuhiko remains alone. After being cornered by the teacher, Mitsuhiko finds out they decided to scare him for being bossy, by the suggestions of Genta and Ayumi. Mitsuhiko runs away angrily but runs into the serial killer. Conan manages to stop the serial killer and he is arrested. Later, Ayumi kisses Mitsuhiko for playing that mean joke on him. Mitsuhiko's smart for his age deduction skills are put to the test when even Conan goes missing. Ayumi kisses Mitsuhiko for hurting him with the joke.
