Once-A-Month Present Threat Case (月いちプレゼント脅迫事件 ,Tsukiichi Purezento Kyouhaku Jiken), known in English as The Case of the Mysterious Gifts in Funimation's English release and as The Case of the Threatening Monthly Presents! in Netflix release, is the 7th episode of Detective Conan anime.

It adapts the Chapters 26-29 of the original manga. It was first aired in February 19, 1996.

In this episode, Kogoro is tasked to investigate the unknown person who's been giving toys and money once a month to the client. This is the episode where Ran starts to become suspicious about Conan, as she thinks he might be Shinichi.

Situation

For the past two years, surgeon Masayuki Ogawa has been receiving anonymous toys and money once a month. He asks Kogoro to determine who's the one sending the gifts. During the investigation, Ran begins to suspect that Conan is actually Shinichi.

Evidence

• Two years ago, an anonymous person started sending Ogawa boxes full of toys, along with one million yen, on the first day of each month. And on Feburary 19, Morning Glory flowers get delivered to the hospital where he worked.
• Usually, the money came with the toys, but on the 25th time, the money came separately in an envelope alongside a letter. Saying they have paid off 25 million yen, and is going to complete their side of the transaction.
• The toys did not have barcodes on it, and the fact that some of them were beat up and broken when Ogawa recieved them. Suggested all the toys are at least a few years old.
  • Coincidentally, as Conan was playing with one of the toys: a handheld video game system, he discovered that there were save files in the Onimaru video game that was named Tomoya Ogino.

Conan deduced that the presents were not given to Ogawa in gratitude, but with grudge and hate. The toys belonged to Tomoya and the flowers were sent as a memento of the boy. And the meaning of the letter is that they will take the life of Ogawa's son as well.

After calling Ogawa's wife they found out someone else had picked up Yuta instead of her, they rushed out to find him, they eventually did find him in a park near his kindergarten school with an unknown man. It turns out that this man was Tomoya's father, Ogino. Who planned to end Yuta's life on the same day, at the same age that Tomoya died. And paying Ogawa by using Yuta's life insurance money.

Ogino attempted to murder young Yuta, so that he would be with his own son, but was foiled by Conan.

Conclusion

Conan was able to stop the murder by using his Power-Enhancing Kick Shoes to kick a nearby soccer ball towards Ogino. And after Ogino seeing Yuta's gratitude for the toys, was reminded of his son causing him to break down and admit that he knows Tomoya's death wasn't really the doctor's fault. Ogawa however forgave Ogino and decided not call the police, citing that, as a father, he understood how devastating it is to lose a son.

After the case, Conan asked Professor Agasa to call Ran as Shinichi later using the Voice-Changing Bowtie to deceive her to into believing that Shinichi and Conan are not the same person. It works but Ran did notice that Shinichi was talking like an old man.

Manga to anime changes

• In the manga, this story takes place after the Luxury Liner Serial Murder Case, as Ran gets a letter from Natsue who mentions that she and Takeshi are living a more quiet life on the ranch. Natsue tells Ran to give her regards to her "detective boyfriend", which sets up the story. The anime instead starts with Ayumi, Mitsuhiko, and Genta asking Ran about Shinichi and whether he is her boyfriend.
  • Additionally, Ran's recollection of the past cases included a flashback to "Luxury Liner Serial Murder Case" in the manga only.

Trivia

• This episode marks canon day 10 of Shinichi's life as Conan.
• The Game Man video game system is a parody of Nintendo's Game Boy system.
  • Futhermore, the game that Conan plays is based off on Yaiba, which it's a manga series written by Gosho Aoyama. Both Yaiba Kurogane and Takeshi Onimaru appears in the game. This is the first time Yaiba is referenced in Detective Conan anime.
• This is the first case Ran gets suspicious of Conan. The second case this happens is in The Cornered Famous Detective! Two Big Murder Cases.
