Situation

Part 1

The Detective Boys, including Conan and Haibara, accompanied by their teacher Miss Kobayashi, visit the Rampo residence managed by Professor Goto. The storehouse which Rampo used as a library entailed a great deal of valuable books, stimulating the excitement of Conan and the rest. In the meantime, Detective Sato and Detective Takagi arrive, whereupon they are informed that a murder case has taken place in a nearby park. And - what is more - the victim's belongings seem to be related to the storehouse that was often closed to the public...

Murder
EP1142 Case1.jpg
Location: Ikebukuro Park, Toshima Ward, Tokyo
Victim: Ken Mizohata
Age: 30 years old
Time: Midnight
Cause of death: Strangulation
Suspects: Professor Goto
Camera footage from a convenience store near the scene of the murder caught the appearance of Goto, who went there following a call offering to show him Ranpo's unpublished manuscript, so he became a suspect of the murder.

Suddenly, Genta’s stomach growls, so Professor Goto’s assistant Ryosuke Okumoto suggests they have lunch at the cafeteria as it is almost time to close the storehouse. At the cafeteria, we can see Okumoto is having a conversation with the other members of the Ranpo Association, with Kobayashi’s group soon joining as they are curious about the Association, but the conversation goes awkward when Oguruma mentions about what happened to Katsumine. Later, one by one, Okumoto's group begins to split up to do their own thing, with Rikkyo University guide Mizumori offering to take Kobayashi's group on a tour that afternoon.

After the tour, Kobayashi’s group meets three members of the Ranpo Association Shunji Oguruma, Nanako Imai, and Rika Tajima, who have met each other again after they split up earlier and decided to have drinks for a while. Imai later notices the strange light coming from the storehouse when they are walking together, so they decide to check the building and see that its main door and windows are open, which contradicts Goto’s regulations about the building itself. Inside the building, Ayumi almost falls off the stairs when they are going to the source of light, but luckily is held by Imai; and Okumoto is found dead due to strangulation.

Murder

Location: Old Edogawa Ranpo Storehouse, Rikkyo University, Toshima Ward, Tokyo
Victim: Ryosuke Okumoto
Age: 35 years old
Cause of death: Strangulation
Suspects: Nanako Imai, Rika Tajima and Shunji Oguruma
Okumoto was strangled from behind, implying that he had let the culprit in and taken no precautions when staying with the person, so the culprit must be one of his acquaintances or friends.

Takagi and Sato quickly arrive at the scene and investigate it, with Conan also doing that as well and soon knowing the one responsible for the murder.

Part 2

Takagi and Sato begin questioning the suspects, all of which wandered around the area separately so they did not have clear alibis. Meanwhile, Kobayashi’s group decides to have a rest at a room that is under maintenance since it is quite late now and they came here by walking. There, Conan has to share to everyone else about his unusual feelings toward the suspects as they appeared awkward when the name Katsumine was mentioned, he also suggests that the murder could continue and it’s up to them to stop it at all cost. So Kobayashi decides to inform the police about the person named Katsumine.

Fortunately, the police are ahead of the curve this time as they have gathered information about the person named Katsumine since the beginning of the investigation into this case. And it is known that he died due to drowning 2 years ago, but then there were many anonymous letters sent to the local police claiming that Katsumine had been murdered and asking for the incident to be reinvestigated. In addition, on the day of his death, he had been drinking with the two recent strangulation victims, but they had an alibi for the time of Katsumine's death. At the same time, Takagi enters and offers to take them home before tomorrow’s interrogation, but Conan asks Takagi about the blood on Okumoto's right finger, to which he replies that it was the victim's own and questions why the boy asked. It seems that he will be caught up in a new task to catch the culprit led by Conan tonight.

    • Excluding the remake of Moonlight Sonata Murder Case (episodes 1000-1001), this is the first time in 24 years that the episode title ends with "Murder Case" (殺人事件 Satsujin Jiken?)[N 1]. It is worth noting that The Spirit Detective's Murder (霊魂探偵殺害事件 Reikon Tantei Satsugai Jiken?) (episodes 863-864), which aired in 2017, uses "satsugai jiken" which also means "murder case"
    • This case features a different Joke Card of Conan impersonating the pose of Edogawa Rampo.
    • Many famous mystery books are exhibited on Rampo's bookshelf:

    • This is Sumiko Kobayashi's sixth appearance in anime-original episodes. Precisely, the protagonist of Edogawa Rampo's Detective Boys from Kogoro Akechi series also shares the same surname: Yoshio Kobayashi (小林 芳雄).
