Featured article Sudo in his early days as character designer. Masatomo Sudo (須藤 昌朋 ,Sudō Masatomo), born January 28, 1961, in Hokkaido, is a Japanese anime director, and character designer. He is best known for designing characters for the anime series Detective Conan and for his involvement with the anime series Lupin III. He is the character designer for the Detective Conan anime series since its inception in 1996, except for a short period of four years from episodes 356 to 504, where the work was done by Mari Tominaga. He also works as character designer and chief animation director for the movies. Later, he also worked as character design supervisor for Zero's Tea Time anime. Active since 1980, he landed irregular animation jobs for various series before being animation director for the first time in 1994. Shortly after, his career expanded, and he joined the Detective Conan production team. While still being the character designer for the series, he worked with other television animation projects in the 2000s, including Hamtaro, Angel Heart and Kenichi: The Mightiest Disciple. Since 2007, Sudo works exclusively in the production team of Detective Conan. Read more... Latest news Detective Conan A new English dub of Detective Conan is coming to Crunchyroll and Netflix, with selected episodes, including some never shown in the U.S. before. This is the first time the series will be on Netflix in the U.S., and the dub won’t use the Case Closed title. The first batch, Conan vs. The Black Organization, starts streaming July 3rd. STOP PRESS! The 29th movie of Detective Conan is Detective Conan: Fallen Angel of the Highway. The main cast features Conan Edogawa, Chihaya Hagiwara, Jugo Yokomizo, Masumi Sera, Ran Mouri, and others. Directed by Takahiro Hasui and scripted by Takahiro Okura, it is set to release in Japan on April 10, 2026. NEW! To commemorate the 30th anniversary of the anime, a 1-hour special episode titled Episode Zero: Shinichi Kudo's Aquarium Case will be aired on January 3, 2026 at 4:30 pm JST.
