Pet Dog John Murder Case (愛犬ジョン殺人事件 ,Aiken Jon Satsujin Jiken), known in English as Jack Attacks!, is the 26th episode of Detective Conan anime.

It's the 8th anime-original episode, written by Kazunari Kouchi. It was first aired in July 29, 1996.

In this episode, Conan is coming back from a restaurant with Ran and Kogoro when they hear a man scream. They enter the house and find a man has been jumped by a dog in the house, causing him to fall backwards off the stairs and into a wall. Pronounced dead, Conan suspects Masayoshi Sakaguchi, the owner of the dog called John. Conan suspects that Masayoshi trained John to kill the man, Takeshi Maehara, who bulled his son, Masato, causing him to suicide several years ago. Conan gives Kogoro subtle hints allowing him to solve the crime.

Takeshi Maehara, a local college student, is house-sitting for his neighbor, Masayoshi Sakaguchi. When Sakaguchi's dog John attacks and kills Takeshi, it shocks not only his owner, but Conan as well. This is a pooch that Conan has known since he was a boy, and now John faces the possibility of being put to sleep, unless Conan can get to the bottom of things first.

Masayoshi Sakaguchi trained the dog John to kill Takeshi. Masayoshi's son, Masato, had committed suicide due to bullying from Takeshi years prior. He had trained John to listen to the clock and phone to attack Takeshi when he said the words through the phone while he was in Izu with a client.

In the past, Takeshi had bullied Masato so severely that it drove him to commit suicide.

Masayoshi originally decided to forgive Takeshi when he showed regret for his actions during Masato's funeral, Takeshi moved away shortly after. When Takeshi moved back to the town years later, Masayoshi saw that he was still a bully as he witnessed him stealing money from another person, prompting him to train John to kill Takeshi. However Conan scolds him for his actions stating that John had been continually waiting for his master, sitting in front of his room almost everyday. He states that all of this would never have made his son Masato happy, Masayoshi breaks down on realizing his mistake, and has a heartfelt farewell with John. It is later revealed John had been adopted by one of Masayoshi's nice family relatives instead of being put down.

Trivia

• The case is based on Columbo's "How to Dial a Murder". Moreover, the way John has been waiting for his owner outside his room is reminiscent of the real-life story of the famous dog Hachiko.
• In The Great Dog Coeur's Triumph, there is a flashback about this case, which is very similar.
• Takeshi Maehara and Sanae Sugita's vehicle is a super red Nissan Fairlady Z 300ZX [Z32].
