Mai Takigawa accidentally kills her boyfriend Yusuke Tsuda in self-defense after misunderstanding him as a burglar, but in reality, he along with Mai's best friend Riko Totsuka planned a surprise party for her birthday.

Takagi and Sato arrive at the scene to investigate, and also does Conan, who was at the apartment complex at the time and heard the scream along with Agasa and the Detective Boys. Conan and the police discover clues that make them think that there's more behind this case.

Even though Riko Totsuka was the one who created the plan, the surprise party and suggested Mai to have a dangerous weapon as a self defense object, the one who manipulated Riko into creating the "murder in self-defense" plan was Mai Takigawa. She knew that Riko and Yusuke were lovers and took advantage of the plan to kill her boyfriend on purpose. She finally bursts out laughing because she was so dumb for trusting her best friend and her boyfriend.

• The plot of this episode shares similarities with The Psychological Murder (笑える死体), the third episode of TV drama Furuhata Ninzaburō.
