Post your top 5 Mangas (and why)!

Recommended Posts

Just like on the Anime thread, post your top 5 Mangas (or more) and why they're that good! :)

I'll start:

1. GTO (the manga is actually longer than the anime. Great storyline)

2. Death Note (I actually read the manga before the anime and loved it)

3. One Piece (I prefer the manga over the anime. Tends to be more detailed)

4. Slam dunk (a manga about basket ball sounds weird but it's actually pretty good. Good character design and storyline. I couldn't stop reading once I started lol)

5. Naruto (who doesn't know that one?)

Heee~ I'll post in mine as well. :D

1. Flame of Recca - the anime was shorter and didn't contain half the fun that the manga had. :D

2. Slam Dunk - goes into the Inter-High tournament, which wasn't in the anime. I loved this so much I had to buy a copy of the entire series. XD

3. MARS - I'm a romantic at heart, so I'm attracted to stories like these. :D And it goes way beyond the typical love story.

4. Rurouni Kenshin - I like this a lot more than the anime series, actually, basically because the drawings are better, I think. And if you want a better grasp of things happening in the storyline of the OVAs (Tsuiokuhen and Seisouhen), you really need to read the manga. And it helps that the drawings are fantastic. XD

5. Kare Kano - another romance, slife-of-life-y kind of story. I've always liked love stories with a lot of psychological stuff blended in.

6. X - Although unfinished, I loved this particular CLAMP work. It's gorgeous (I'm a sucker for great design and character drawings), and the pull of the storyline is not so bad, either. I definitely want to see CLAMP pick this series where they left off and continue it.

1. DETECTIVE CONAN - love the characters and cases

2. Shugo Chara - again love the characters and it's soo funny!

3. +anima - cute charaters, love the idea in general

4. D.N. Angel - very interesting

5- a few other random ones.......

can anyone suggest a few good mangas for me??? these are examples of what i like. please not too much romance though....

as with my list of top 5 anime, I'll be leaving DC off of it...

in no particular order:

DeathNote: it was short, sweet, and to the point... I was actually impressed by how well the anime kept to the story (pretty much except for the very last scene... no spoilers 8-) )... but I liked the manga for much the same reason I liked the anime

Rurouni Kenshin: no contest here, this manga was amazing. the anime cut off at the end of the Kyoto arc, so I was really happy that Viz brought over the complete manga series

Fullmetal Alchemist: I know at least the English language version is still going... but it's way more involved than the original anime, with additional characters that were then added for the second anime

Fruits Basket: no doubt about this one either... it goes way past the end of the anime, which is awesome. I'm really glad they brought it all over so that we could see the true conclusion

Nightmare Inspector: this one will probably never see the light of animation, but it's still an interesting read... it's short, and it's episodic (which is something I tend to shy away from except with DC), but it has quite an odd flavor to it... no pun intended (if you know anything about it, you know why that's a pun)

there are several others that could have made the list... Hunter x Hunter, GetBackers, etc... but not Trigun - even though the Trigun anime was awesome, the manga was uber-difficult to follow, and I often found myself rereading pages to try to figure out which hands or feet belonged to who

Top manga:

1. Naruto - I just love ninjas! The way they cast different jutsus and stuff.

2. Eyeshield 21 - longer than the anime itself. Interesting story and funny characters. Never fails to make me laugh. :)

3. Detective Conan - I don't really read this anime much because it's a little boring compared to watching the episodes themselves.

4. Hentai-Kamen - Pure laughter! (no porn.)

5. Flame of Recca - good story-line.

I really like your top 3! :D

I love One Piece myself. I like it more than Naruto and Bleach. I also really liked Hajime No Ippo though I only watched the anime.

And Maison Ikkoku.. I must say I'm surprised cause I thought it wasn't very well known here in North America (or is it?) but it's actually a personal favorite of mine. I watched the anime in French when I was little and it just stuck in my mind. A few years later I downloaded the full anime and manga series and really enjoyed watching it again!

There's one thing I'm sure you will agree with me: Rumiko Takahashi is a manga goddess! lol. I've always been a big fan of hers. I also loved Urusei Yatsura (Lamu in French) and Ranma 1/2, an eternal classic (the voices are hilarious in French, which is fun)! I used to read Inu Yasha too but after I caught up with it at some point I forgot/didn't find time to check it out again. I really should though since the series ended last year..

Yes, all hail Takahashi-sensei. She has a new series now, Rin'ne, and it's so far so great. You can actually read it online on Viz's Rumic World site. I love UY (obviously, #5), home to many of my all-time favorite manga characters (Tobimaro, Cherry, Ran-chan, and many more). What the hell, here's the rest of my Top 30:

30. Devilman (1972~1973, Nagai Gou)

29. Pyu to Fuku! Jaguar (2000~present, Usuta Kyousuke)

28. Gintama (2003~present, Sorachi Hideaki)

27. Kyoukai no Rin'ne (2009~present, Takahashi Rumiko)

26. Real (1999~present, Inoue Takehiko)

Oh wow, Maison Ikkoku! I actually just started reading that! I'm only on Chapter 8, but I'm really liking it so far. Poor Yusaku, everyone just rips on him... lol. It has quite a lot of chapters. Not liking Kyoko so far, though. She's... it's hard to describe, really.

I just learned that AKIRA KAMIYA is the voice of the tennis coach? Mind. Blown.

1) City Hunter: Excellent manga with a lot of action, humour and very beautiful womens (I absolutely love how Hojo draws women). And one of the most charismatic manga heroes ever.

2) Detective Conan: A very pleasant lecture with loveable characters and interesting investigations' plots.

3) Angel Heart: A more dark, more mature and more violent City Hunter story, the fun of the 80's leaving his place to the social crisis and the pessimism of the 2000's.

4) Family Compo: A very warm vision of a transexual family by the eyes of a newcomer, and a lot of fun and very ambiguously funny plots. And of course, the beautiful Shion, one of the most funny and sexually ambiguous characters ever.

5) Ranma 1/2: One of the most popular and most funny work of legendary Rumiko Takahashi. A lot of second degree and loveable characters.

6) Clamp's X: Well, it's just one hell of a masterpiece. Very dark, very gloomy, but this apocalypse is truly wonderful. Why only 6th ? I got only one problem: it's unfinished (but still could be completed... one day... maybe...).

7) Saint Seiya: Well, the Knights of the Zodiac are heroes of my youth and I love greek mythology, so...
