Situation

Part 1

A stray cat, carrying a piece of paper, appears at the spot where Mitsuhiko is showing off the Kamen Yaiba pin he has accidentally won to his friends. The cat hands the paper to Conan, much to everyone's surprise, revealing that someone needed help.

Meanwhile, Sato and Takagi are chasing after the kidnapper of Ishigami Corporation's granddaughter, Shiori, because Sato mistook him for an ordinary illegal parking offender and let him leave without taking a suitcase that the kidnapper should have taken so that Inspector Hatori of the special investigation team could find the girl, potentially endangering her life.

The car Sato is driving, chasing the kidnapper's motorcycle, reaches Kanagawa Prefecture, where we see Chihaya Hagiwara handling a traffic case. She also notices the red car speeding and decides to chase after it to see what is happening. The kidnapper is very stubborn, running red lights and honking loudly to scare away all passersby. However, he nearly left a young boy crashed by Sato’s car without Chihaya’s interference, as the boy was left stunned from the chaos and unaware of the car chasing for the motorbike.

Just when it seems all hope of catching the culprit has vanished, some subsequent clues suggest to the three officers that the man is hiding in a red-brick warehouse near the scene of the near-accident.

Suddenly, Conan calls Takagi to inform him about the kidnapping case, in which Chihaya is summarizing, and the kids are given permission to search for Shiori’s whereabouts. Meanwhile, since the kidnapper has seen Sato and Takagi, having the two and Chihaya in their current uniforms to find him is quite risky. Therefore, Chihaya proposes an idea that leads to a scene that shouldn't be watched without understanding the full story (and shouldn't be rewatched after understanding it either).

After changing clothes and shaking the car, Chihaya and Takagi enter the warehouse as a couple to identify the suspects, much to the jealousy of Sato, who is disguised as a traffic police officer and eavesdropping outside. Chihaya immediately narrows the number of suspects down to three based on her knowledge of motorcycles, much to Takagi's astonishment.

• The first person Chihaya introduces is a playboy at the two o'clock position based on Takagi's frame of reference. He is wearing only a shirt, which is rather strange since it’s a bit cold, suggesting he had just taken it off.
• The second person is a tough-looking man at the one o'clock position, who also has a scrape on his left wrist.
• The last person is a salaryman wearing a flashy, ill-fitting jacket, sitting behind Takagi.

Chihaya points out that Motorcycle drivers hook their left foot under the shift pedal to drive, which makes the left toe of their shoe dirty. Because of this, she classifies the three men as the suspects.

Chihaya begins her act of apprehending the kidnapper by angrily throwing a glass of water in Takagi's face, calling him a womanizer. Takagi is initially surprised, but then understands her signal and approaches to check if the man is alright. The act continues as Chihaya pretends to drop her wallet to create an opportunity to strike up a conversation and gain a better understanding of some of their suspicious things. From this, we learn that the first person even wishes to take off his shirt, while the second man's scratches were caused by bumping into the wall after being pushed from behind.

Meanwhile, Conan’s group reviews the information they gathered:

• The stray cat is famous around the area, and is usually fed by Shiori’s grandmother during lunch time. Mitsuhiko and Ayumi deduce that Shiori could’ve taken advantage of the routine to send an ask for help message for her grandmother, but Haibara denies this as the girl also has to twist the note into a string and tie it into its neck.
• The Dice Man - a suspicious man wearing a hat and a mask looking at the dice placed on top of the nameplate of the Ishigamis while muttering to himself. The characteristics imply that he may have accomplices inside the house.

Part 2

Back at the warehouse, Inspector Jugo is going to enjoy pancakes with a police detective when he mistakes Sato for a motorcycle police officer and asks her to return to work, only to receive a terrifying glare in return. The two proceed and Jugo finds something even more shocking: Chihaya is sitting with Takagi. The shock hasn’t ended though, while enjoying pancakes with a mixture of jealousy and resentment, Chihaya approaches him and asks for his help, much to his surprise.

Conan demonstrates how Shiori makes the cat carry the piece of paper to give to its grandmother, the intended destination: He takes an A4 sheet of paper and folds it into an airplane resembling a bird, which would fold its wings when it flies, making the cat mistake it for a real bird. However, the cat didn't deliver it to Shiori's grandmother, but instead wandered off and was discovered by Conan's group. But that is enough for them to deduce that the current housekeeper had confined the girl to the attic, hence, she could easily throw away the airplane. Conan then informs the location of the girl to Sato.

Conan further suggests that the remaining accomplice might be a medical professional based on the clues he's gathered, and proposes a plan to uncover the kidnapper. Meanwhile, the group enlists the help of Detective Hatori's team to search for the girl and secretly sends a message to the butler to give herself in. At the same time, Chihaya, Takagi, and Jugo approach the three suspects and play some hospital songs to gauge their reaction. And Man A is found to be the remaining accomplice in the kidnapping.

Aftermath

As the Detective Boys walk home, they talk about the case they just solved, and Haibara notices that Mitsuhiko still has the Kamen Yaiba pin on his scarf. Genta comments that he is just showing off, but Mitsuhiko said the instructions on the box said to show it proudly on your clothes. Conan realizes that something is off and asks Mitsuhiko if it was indeed a 24th anniversary pin, which he confirms. Conan finds it abnormal that they would not be waiting for their 25th anniversary to release it, and so, he takes Mitsuhiko's pin and touches it, realizing that it is way too heavy for a normal pin. He opens the pin to reveal a hidden camera and listening device, which he quickly destroys as the others watch panickedly. Listening on the other side is Rei Furuya, who drives away in his white Mazda RX-7, saying that "it won't be that easy." This alludes to his task of investigating Conan, which had previously been entrusted to him by the Mysterious Old Man with Bird in The Reason He Became a Butler.

Manga to anime changes

• In manga, Conan quickly noticed the paper on Torakage's mouth and grabbed it. In anime, the scene is expanded, with Torakage seems to notice Conan and then walks towards him (in addition to Haibara commenting that the paper is for Conan).
• The part where Chihaya and Takagi considered the reason the suspects might be innocent is not adapted.

Trivia

• The cat's name, Torakage, is an anagram of Kagetora, tiger character from Gosho's previous work Yaiba.
• Raiha Shirogane (白金 雷刃), Torakage's owner in Kamen Yaiba, is named after Yaiba's protagonist Yaiba Kurogane (鉄 刃).
• The buildings in the background, as seen from the Yokohama Port Main Road, are the Yokohama Grand InterContinental Hotel and the JICA Yokohama building. The pancake restaurant the kidnapper escaped, Bells, is the real-life Bills Yokohama Red Brick Warehouse. The closed restaurant "Cocorico" is in fact the real-life "Café & Rotisserie LA COCORICO".
• This is the first canon appearance of the Yokohama Red Brick Warehouse. It previously appeared in the 2014 TV Special The Disappearance of Conan Edogawa: The Worst Two Days in History.
• In Part 2, when Chihaya is explaining her investigation on Man A to Takagi, there is a mistake where the scene is focused on Man B instead for a while before changing to close up of Man A.

  • Inspector Hatori (羽鳥)'s name comes from "bat planes" (コウモリ飛行機), since his name contains the kanji for bird ("鳥") and wings ("羽") ;
  • Shiori Ishigami (石神 詩織)'s name comes from "origami" (折り紙).
