Case

Situation

During the reconstruction of the traditional house inn, the inn hostess found a strange safe, so she called in two experts to check it out: The antique appraiser Seiji Kawabata and the secondhand dealer Shinya Kadokuya, who brought in their friend Ippei Zaizen. The reason Kogoro is here is because the owner received a message threatening to take the treasure.

This time, we get to witness another internal conflict between the three antique experts, which would essentially mean there is likely going to be a murder…

At 7:38 p.m, the Mouri family, the inn hostess, Kadokura and Kawabata are eating their dinner, when suddenly, Kogoro has to go to the restroom. After finishing his needs in the restroom, he hears a sound of a coin falling from the room nearby, he tries to ask Zaizen if it is him, but gets no answer.

At 8 p.m, Kogoro has already fallen asleep and Zaizen has not shown up yet. However, when the hostess turns off the light to have the rest to have a look at the moon, everyone starts noticing the weird light that looks like a fire in Zaizen’s room.

Murder and arson

Everyone rushes to the annex with two fire extinguishers brought by Kogoro, but Zaizen is already dead in the room. Conan observes the crime scene to look for suspicious traces and finds a cut on the glass door. There are also footprints found outside of the said door. The police arrive at the scene and begin their usual preliminary inspection.

Conan then eavesdrops the interrogation between the police and the suspects:

1. Kyoko Tominaga, the inn hostess. She was in the kitchen preparing for dinner between 6 p.m and 6.30 p.m. After that, she visited Zaizen’s room in the annex to give him some yakitori, and lit the lamp when Zaizen told it was dark. It is also revealed that she has financial problems with him.
2. Shinya Kadokura. He went to the annex to check on Zaizen at 7:08 p.m. There, he saw that Zaizen is still striking 2 coins on each other to check their authenticity. It is revealed that Kadokura suffered a huge loss from an investment made with Zaizen’s recommendation.
3. Seiji Kawabata. He went to the annex to call Zaizen at 7:30 p.m, but got ignored completely. Kawabata recalls that Zaizen was striking coins consistently. It is revealed that Kawabata’s reputation was ruined when Zaizen wrote an article about his mistake online.

The culprit is Shinya Kadokura. The consequence he suffered from the failed investment was that his house, his wife, and his daughter were taken away, but Zaizen was enriched because of the investment. Kadokura blames Kogoro because if he didn't arrive, the case hasn't been solved exactly at midnight.

Theft

Object: 20 yen gold coin from the Meiji period (worth about 30 million yen in modern times)

Culprit: Shinya Kadokura

In the post-credit, Kogoro is seen smashing the piggy bank again to find "valuable coins" while Ran says it won't and Conan is smiling, all three statements are put in "word playing" fashion.
