Case

Situation

While humming the song "Nazo", Ayumi jogs toward school, but as she passes by the Makabe residence, she sees a man carrying a woman. Both people look injured, and Ayumi, peeking through the bushes, believes the man killed the woman. Ayumi suspects that Jun Makabe is having an affair with a foreign looking woman, evidence from their rather affectionate hug and kiss on the cheek, and they plan to finish off Yuri in the mountain.

While walking past the Makabe residence, Ayumi witnessed Jun carrying an unconscious Yuri to the backseat of his car and then driving off.

Conan, Haibara, and the Detective Boys decided to infiltrate Makabe's residence to find the evidence. True indeed, Ayumi discovers blood splash under the bed. Panic, Ayumi hit her head on the bed and fell unconscious, falling into Jun Makabe's hand.

Upon seeing the unconscious Ayumi inside of his house, Jun carried her away in his car headed towards an unknown location.

Jun puts Ayumi in a car and drives her to a mountain. Conan chases after him with his stakeboard, and after confrontation, he knocks Jun out with his soccer kick. It seems Conan captured the culprit, but was there something amiss?

The whole affair, much to Ayumi and Conan's embarrassment, turns out to be a major misunderstanding. There was no murder, or other crime, going on in the Makabe house, but yet a medical emergency: unknown to Ayumi, Yuri was in the last stage of her pregnancy. Because she had miscarried once, Yuri had decided not to tell anyone until she was sure that the baby would be born healthy. When the water broke, an unusual amount of blood was released, hence the stains the Detective Boys found on the doll and beneath the bed. However, Jun managed to get his wife to a clinic in the mountains just in time. Yuri has delivered without any complications and was spending the last few days in the Yamanonaka Clinic to recover.

When Jun brought Ayumi into the mountains, he was really taking her to his wife's hospital for treatment and recovery. In addition, the mysterious woman was not, as the Detective Boys surmised, Jun's mistress, but his younger sister, who was likewise worried about her sister-in-law.

Despite all the inconveniences the Detective Boys have caused, and Jun losing one of his teeth, the Makabes are not mad at the children and even graciously allow Ayumi to hold the child and come visiting whenever she wants. The only sad note to the story is that this turbulent case has caused Conan to miss out on the release of the latest Detective Samonji novel.
