After the Detective Boys visited Agasa as he has been in the hospital due to the previous injury, the Detective Boys are interrupted by a criminal who is chased by Takagi, and the criminal rushes toward the Boys, terrifying Haibara as she thought it to be Gin, just to be knocked out by Sato. However, when Takagi is just about to report on his notebook, he sees character strings written before by Date, the former owner of the notebook, which remind him of an old, unsolved case, and sad memory, eventually the Detective Boys join in with Sato and Takagi to help them, starting at Poirot Cafe. They begin solving the code, thus finding the proper guidance, dressing style and specific time. While discussing what Date implied in the notebook, Azusa mentions a strange boy who made a sign which Conan deduces as an SOS signal because the boy was actually the commodities of the transaction, which coincides with the unsolved case of the Wataru brother The Detective Boys visit Professor Agasa at the hospital. Takagi recalls the moment when he was having a stakeout with Date. He also recalls the moment before Date got hit by a car.

The group starts following the guidance on the notebook, and when Takagi and Amuro see the boy who is making the sign exactly what Azusa mentioned, Amuro receives the instruction from the old gaming device and follows it, then the kidnapper takes the suitcase, without knowing that Sato has been waiting, however, he uses his pepper spray on Sato to have time to escape while the Detective Boys take the boy when suddenly he cries as there are some in his situation as well. So another investigation has to be made, the boys, Azusa stay while the others split into different direction, however, the boy doesn’t have the specific location, forcing the Detective Boys to gather other information to find out about the place, eventually they find out about it and Takagi is the one currently closest to it so he wastes no time to go there and he luckily buys enough time for the others to arrive.

Heiji is going against Okita, who he is lost to before, so he plans to beat him this time and confess his feelings to Kazuha. Before the match, Ran and Conan go to the restroom, but the restroom inside was crowded, so they head to the restroom outside at the North Entrance. When Ran and Conan reach there a murder occurs. Heiji and Okita who were passing by to pratice before the match notice the murder as well. Heiji wants to beat Okita in a kendo tournament and confess his love for Kazuha afterwards. Okita flirts with Ran, making Conan jealous. Ran is reminded of Shinichi by Okita's look, flustering her. Momiji plans a suprise victory party for Heiji. Heiji is competing in this tournament

Heiji and Okita wanted to have a match before the tournament start, however Sato stopped them. Sato reassure Heiji that if he can solve the case before the match resume, they wouldn’t have to cancel the tournament. The police begin to check the three suspects’ belonging. Heiji figure out who the culprit is and solved the case. Ran rushed to bring Heiji and Okita back to the tournament however the match are already over. Their opponents won by default. Momiji decided to meet Heiji under better circumstances and leave. Heiji failed to confess his love once again. Takeshi Onimaru is introduced. Heiji tries to solve the case quickly in order to make it back in time for the match and to confess his love for Kazuha but he failed once again. Heiji is competing in this tournament

Cheerfully, Kanoko accepted the fact that her husband did not cheat on her; she then invited Kogoro for a dinner. After eating, Kogoro drove Kanoko home, and a squeal was heard distinctly...

Kogoro and Conan visited Inspector Megure, by reason of their unpromising progress of the case that they were assisting to investigate. The suspect of that case was called Kengo Kitao, a former elementary school teacher. Eight days ago, he was cuffed by the police at a construction area as the suspect of the murder case which took place nearby; strangely, Kitao admitted his crime rather quickly, but however the police interrogated him, he yet rendered queer behaviours that made Megure hesitate on prosecuting him. Inspector Megure and his colleagues thought that there must be some switcheroos behind the case; consequently, they started to search for other suspects related to that murder case. Whereupon a person who was related to Kitao emerged gradually...

The child abruptly dropped a toy capsule; as Conan picked it up, a piece of paper came into his sight: seemingly, the paper read "HELP". After that, Conan perused the child to tell him that he had picked up the toy capsule for him. Whereupon he led the child to the bathroom, and within the bathroom, they realised that there were no spaces to hide, thus they exchanged their clothes and Conan shrewdly rescued the hostage.

Conan had underwent an abduction incident, a result of exchanging clothes with the real hostage, Kazuo Mimura. Having declared that he would be willing to assist the two kidnappers after learning that the two of them did not commit any crime, he inquired, "are you forced to kidnap Kazuo because your child was also being held as hostage?" When Conan understood the situation, he conceived a plan to discovering the true culprit behind the entire case.

The Detective Boys attend a firefly festival to commemorate a shinto shrine in a village. The truck soon arrives with the fireflies and they are released into the fields. Later one of the truck drivers, Tokurou Nakamine, is found murdered and three of the villagers are the prime suspects. Conan notices a flashlight Genta found inside the truck and realizes who the murderer is. Using Agasa, Conan reveals the second truck driver, Shuchirou Tarumi, to be the murderer. Conan reveals that Tarumi murdered Nakamine in a desolated location near the village before turning the truck around and meeting with the other villagers. As evidence, Conan reveals the flashlight Genta found was actually a dictation machine with Nakamine's voice recorded on it. Tarumi takes Haibara hostage and attempts to flee but is eventually apprehended. Conan reveals that Tarumi's motive was fear of being exposed by Nakamine for embezzling money from the firefly project and stealing money from Nakamine's company.
