The following is a list of chapters for Magic Kaito Volume 1 to 5. Magic Kaito was first published in Shogakukan's Weekly Shōnen Sunday issue #26 1987. Serialized until September 1990, it was interrupted by the serialization of Yaiba, and later Detective Conan, and was thus only serialized episodically. The chapters were collected into five volumes, and as of 2025, remains unfinished, with periodical releases, namely in 1993, 1994, 1995, 1999, 2002, 2006, 2011, 2014, 2017 and 2024.

After an eight-year absence, the gentleman thief Kaitou Kid suddenly reappears to steal jewels all over Tokyo! Meanwhile, high school student Kaito Kuroba discovers a secret room inside his house and soon learns an uncomfortable truth: his father was the original Kaitou Kid. After learning that his father had been murdered for his nighttime activities, Kaito carries on as the new Kaitou Kid in hopes that his father's killers will one day reappear. But until then, he'll have to contend with a visiting princess and her trigger-happy bodyguard, a robot double of himself, surviving a date with Aoko while keeping his identity a secret, a pirate and his treasure buried under the sea, and a witch obsessed with forcing every boy to love her. Kaito Kuroba/Kaitou Kid, Aoko Nakamori, Ginzo Nakamori, Toichi Kuroba, Konosuke Jii, Keiko Momoi, and Akako Koizumi are all introduced. Kaito takes over from Jii what Toichi started and becomes the next Kaitou Kid. At this point of time, Kaito targets expensive objects as Kid to attract the attention of whoever might know something about (or had something to do with) what happened to Toichi. Aoko invites Kaito on a date to Tropical Land in an attempt to prove to her father that Kaito is not Kaitou Kid. Kaito realizing Aoko is in danger, despite being afraid to death of fish, scuba dives in the ocean to rescue her from a pirate. Akako attempts to get Kaito to fall in love with her using magic.

Kaito's adventures continue in Ekoda City and beyond, pitting him against trickier foes and situations than ever before. Lovesick witches, vanished prime ministers, hordes of nanobots, and haunted schools may prove too much for any other teenage magician-cum-thief, but not for the one... the only... Kaitou Kid! Kaito as Kid carries a dressed up Aoko bridal style down a ski slope. In a later chapter, Kaito and Aoko pretend to be married in order to sneak into a billiards parlor.

Two big developments rock Kaito's world in quick succession. First, the teenage detective Saguru Hakuba returns from an extended stay in London, determined to cage Kaitou Kid once and for all - and with his genius IQ and near-unlimited resources, he just might! But Kaito is also closer to his goal than ever before, as his father's killers have finally stepped back into the light - with the intent of sending the second Kaitou Kid to the grave as well! Saguru Hakuba and Snake are introduced. After his confrontation with Snake, Kaito loudly proclaims as Kid that he'll find Pandora and destroy it before Snake and his group have a chance to use it. From this point onwards he targets big jewels that could potentially be the doublet gem Pandora when held up to the moonlight. Saguru takes a liking to Aoko and even tries to take her for a date. Kaito and Aoko share good chemistry together in this volume. It is revealed that Snake is responsible for Toichi's death and that Snake knew that Toichi Kuroba was the Kaitou Kid. However, luckily for Kaito, Snake thinks Toichi somehow survived and that the Kid standing before him is the same one from eight years ago. Kid has his first confrontation against Snake from the unnamed organization. Snake makes a second appearance in "Green Dream" but does not fight against Kid.

With his goal now clear, Kaitou Kid begins to go after big jewels of every kind, from the brooch of a jaded English magician to a ring that once supposedly belonged to Marie Antoinette. But his opponents will be many, not just the mysterious criminal syndicate that killed his father, but also the Parisian cat burglar Chat Noir, the criminal mastermind Nightmare, and a certain other teenage detective who's never let a single crook slip through his fingers. The Black Star serves to establish that Shinichi and Kaitou Kid met before Detective Conan volume 16. Shinichi Kudo, Juzo Megure, and Shintaro Chaki make an appearance. Snake goes after both the Crystal Mother and the Red Tear, fighting Kid in both heists.

No summary yet Phantom Lady, and Kaitou Corbeau are all introduced. Toichi meets Chikage, resulting in Toichi taking up the Kaitou Kid mantle. Snake tries to steal Midnight Crow from Kaitou Kid and Kaitou Corbeau.

In July 2017, to celebrate the completion of 5 volumes, alternate covers in the style of the Detective Conan covers were released. Titled Great Phantom Thief Kid (大怪盗キッド ,Dai Kaitō Kiddo), they were offered with all purchases of Magic Kaito volumes. The alternate covers also showed a "keyhole character" and a "featured detective". The numbers are intentionally written out of order to spell out 1-4-1-2 (Kid's alternate name), with the last cover being the Kaitou Kid logo. The "Conan side images" were switched with Kaitou Kid, and the keyholes were Ginzo Nakamori (volume 1), Conan Edogawa (other volume 1), Toichi Kuroba (volume 2), Jirokichi Suzuki (volume 4) and Saguru Hakuba (Kid logo volume).
