Season 21

The twenty-first season of the Detective Conan anime consists of the episodes aired in the year 2016.

It begun airing in January 9, 2016 and finished airing on December 24, 2016, with a total of 41 episodes. There are 18 manga-adapted episodes and 23 anime-original episodes. There were breaks totaling to 3 weeks, with remastered reruns broadcast for 9 weeks.

Agasa takes the Detective Boys to a cake buffet, where a toy helicopter flies into Genta's cake and they meet two blogger actresses. It is revealed that the actresses have a bet on whose blog will be popular, with the loser having to shave their head. One of the actress, Shono Kyona, asks the other, Kitami Saya, to accept loss, claiming to have found her secret. Conan finds Yonehara Sakurako to be working as Kyona's temp manager. The actresses are revealed to be staying in the hotel as they are filming a series. As Kyona leaves, Says asks Sakurako to come to her room later, to discuss something. As Conan checks both of their blogs, Haibara tells him that Kyona mentioned that Saya's secret is mentioned in her blog. Meanwhile, as Sakurako delivers her her stuff, Kyona asks her to wake her up at 5, and tells her that she will not open the door for anybody else. Sakurako then goes to Saya's room, finds a strange envelope with a black heart mark on the door, which Saya takes, but closes the door, without asking Sakurako anything. Conan and the others find Sakurako later, asking the reception to open Kyona's door. Saya joins her telling them that she doesn't have any scenes today, but Kyona does, so it would be better to wake her up soon. When they arrive inside Kyona's room, they find Kyono murdered, with the room's key card lying next to her. This is strange, since the door is not an auto-lock. Conan also finds some cream lying next to the key card. Later, when TV crew meet up with Saya, Conan deduces that Saya had a scene today, but had lied earlier about having no shoot, since she knew that the shooting would be canceled. Conan deduces that Saya is the killer and she used the helicopter somehow, but doesn't understand how. When asked, Saya tells them that she threw the helicopter away since it was spoiled. Conan buys a helicopter of his own, flies it in her room and when it is stuck, Says climbs the table to get it down. With this, Conan assembles all the clues to prove that Saya is the culprit.

The commissioner calls Takagi to tell him to listen to Conan's deductions. Conan shows his deductions to everyone. As they are coming out, Takagi questions Conan how he knows the commissioner but Conan is confused. It turns out that there is a new commissioner - Kuroda Hyoue. Superintendent Kuroda is transferred from the Nagano Prefectural Police to the Tokyo Metropolitan Police. It is implied by him that Kiyonaga Matsumoto has been promoted.

They end in an Italian restaurant belonging to Higo's former teammate and senior, Asuka Teiya. The restaurant also hires Yamada Akimichi, the Sommelier, Banba Reiko, waitress and Konoe Yasuto, waiter. The owner seems to be missing a long time, and the three employees search for him. Initially, he is nowhere to be found, but later they find him sleeping, completely covered in a blanket. Later Yasuto gets an email from Asuka asking that Higo and Yoko be brought to the store room. There they find Asuka murdered.

Conan, Ran and Mouri hear a woman's shout. When they run to the place, which is a parking space and see a man, Yaginuma Takeshi, dead on the ground, apparently from the fall, and a woman, Takizawa Misaki, who had shouted, on the 3rd floor balcony of the parking lot. During the police inquiry, she admits that the man was the one who killed her husband, Takizawa Akira, and stole jewelery stones worth 100 million yen bartender. Conan suspects that the woman is not telling the entire truth.

One week ago, a hostess named Atsuko Tonda was murdered in front of her house by an unknown assailant. She returned home early to pick up something she forgotten and surprised the intruder and a struggle broke out. The crime was discovered by Yumi and Naeko who saw the suspect spinning a hose ritualistically. The suspect threw the hose to obstruct Yumi before fleeing toward the Ramen Ogura shop, which the only customers were Yuna Shono, Sosuke Mizushina, and Osamu Nakanishi. Also, one of the victim expensive pair of earrings is missing. Yumi's boyfriend Shukichi is the brother of Masumi, although they don't realize the connection.

They learns that Shukichi Haneda had also been at the restaurant and left just before the three suspects arrived. Yumi confesses that she ran into him that night, but didn't mention it, because she didn't want him involved. Conan suggests that Yumi calls Haneda, since he has memory, and heard if he had notice something about the culprit. At the same time Sera decides to call her smart brother. Since he is also a regular at the Ramen restaurant, he might have seen the three suspects. Yumi reaches Haneda, but before she can ask him, he puts her on hold to answer another call. Meanwhile Sera get through to her brother, but he says that he is talking to an important person on the phone and asks Sera to call later, and then he hangs up. Then Yumi finally talks to Haneda. Conan finds a handkerchief that Sera left behind with the name "Mary" in English on it. He suspects this could be the name of the Unknown child

After making him drunk, Nagai lured Oshiro to the Kometo Bridge. While Oshiro's back was temporarily turned, Nagai hurled a flashing boomerang and then quickly drew Oshiro's attention to it. When Oshiro looked after the mysterious glowing object flying by, Nagai grabbed his legs and tipped him over the bridge railing to his death in the dried-out riverbed.   A flashback of Shinichi when he was Conan's age solving a case at Nagai's shop.

Ran and Sonoko meet Asami, their senior in middle school who is now in Tohto University. Asami wishes to invite Shinichi to her birthday party with her mystery club but she obviously can't contact him so she invites Ran, Sonoko, Conan, and Kogoro instead. When Ran asks Asami about her relationship with Shinichi, Asami replies "first love". Midway through the party, Asami falls asleep, so the rest of the group leave to a karaoke box. They notice the house on fire from the bar's window several hours later and rush back. Ran bursts through the burning building to save Asami just in time.

Conan notices the furniture was moved and overhears the firefighters wondering why the birthday cake was put on a chair under the fax machine. With the new evidence, Conan can safely say it was arson instead of a suicide which Kogoro was thinking. Conan finds out who the culprit after he interviews the owner of the convenience store next door to the karaoke box. Kogoro, though knocked out, tells everyone the president of the mystery club set the fire with the fax machine because he wanted to heroically save Asami so she would fall in love with him. It is revealed that Asami only confessed to Shinichi, to which he replied he's in love with "someone weird", a.k.a. Ran.

Conan, Kogoro, Ran, Heiji, and Kazuha are going to a cottage located in Gunma Prefecture because of a crime that happened there. Kogoro feels sick, so he wanted to go in the toilet but when he came out, he feels weak because he ate a poisonous mushroom. According to Conan, when someone eats the mushroom, they feel its deliciousness but also feels it's poison. Kogoro goes into the forest and found some delicious mushrooms, when he ate it, he got poisoned. So he took a rest, supposed to be in the director's car, but Takashi was nowhere to be found. Heiji and Conan searched everyone's rooms. After that, Takashi was already killed. They tried to called their cellphones but there's no service. They found a video leaning on Takashi's room, when he drinks the water, he was poisoned already. They discussed the case 8 years ago. His plan was not successful, he was found dead four days ago.

When chasing a robber firing a pistol and escaping through the building roofs, detective Mouri even stops at a boundary between two blocks and becomes afraid of heights with slight shocks. After that, when he watches television at the office, he sees a report about a recently-released culprit, who is a chief of a company. However, a motorbiker comes and shoot at him then escapes away, cause the latter has to stay at the hospital for some time. Mouri finds that the pistol is actually the same one that the robber used and he decides to retrieve that pistol. Later Conan and him finds the biker's motorcycle and a handbag, and Mouri implies that she lives in a room. This time Mouri gets dizzy again when chasing the biker wearing with a purple helmet and a black jacket. The biker is later identified as a printing company staff named Onda Izumi. Her parents died because of the debts. When getting to the company the biker works, they are surrounded by armored staffs and even have been got out, but Mouri realized that Onda's main target is still the shot chief. So he investigates the truth and chases on, even persuades Onda. Onda states she picked up the pistol and attempt to take revenge, but failed, and even implies that the man is her boyfriend and even leads to her parents' death. Onda even wants to commit suicide, but prevented by Mouri and both of them get rescued. Later, Eri becomes Onda's lawyer, and the shot man with other two staffs are arrested with the police are still checking their internal structure.

Conan and Kogoro are visiting Yoichi to investigate the threat. After his secretary Shinkai killed his president to stop him from deceiving people with his moneylending. After discovering the corpse, his younger brother Koji Takarada and the victim's wife, Mika Takarada, are both crying due to that incident. However, when Megure asked them a few questions, they are shocked, Mika being incredulous to learn that she's suspected. Mika had motives to kill her husband just to get the inheritance. Koji wants to get his inheritance, too. The building's manager, Kinsaku Tomii, witnessed a person holding a bag, wearing a pair of sun-glasses and a hat. They ask Shinkai who he/she is. But, he can't identify the person. They continue questioning those two in Mika's house. Their housekeeper Kyoko Kinoshita confirms Mika's alibi. Shinkai truly said that he can confirm those two alibis. Koji said that he was in Shinjuku, and Mika was in the storehouse between 1 pm and the time her late husband was killed.

Later, they found a beggar, who was wearing the wig and shade from the culprit. Mika's hair was found in it and although she is guilty, she's mad at Shinkai for making up such a big lie. Koji's prints were found on the threatening letter. Who is the culprit, is it Haruyuki Shinkai, Mika Takarada or Koji Takarada? Who's the culprit on this in case?

Conan, Sonoko, Ran, and Sera along with Amuro decide to go to a sound studio to sing songs. Upon arriving there they find no space rooms available, so they decide go down and have a rest, where members of a girl's band are arguing about their performance. The guitar player and the other members are criticizing each other. After some time, when everybody gets into the rest room, the drum player is found dead on the drum with a rope mark on her neck. Because of the angle of the security camera, the police and Conan can not know about the situation about the murder clearly. Scotch is introduced. Sera officially meets Amuro for the first time and is suspicious of him, thinking she has met him before. Sera recalls when Scotch teaches her guitar, and Amuro briefly meets them there (she does not officially meet him, though).

When the investigation countines on, the bass player of the band mentions a deceased lead singer in the band. She and other members give Conan, Sera and Amuro a video of the band over the phone. The detectives even solve the case when the police are still trying to find the culprit. The culprit used the line of the drummer's hat to strangle her and put her on the drums, and is revealed to be the keyboard player, who managed to use a bottle full of water with sleeping pills to let the drummer asleep, even stated that the drummer's dislike of the former lead singer, which led to the latter's death. The keyboard player is then arrested. Scotch was an undercover MPD Public Safety officer who was killed by Akai. Conan confirms that Akai Shuichi is Sera's eldest brother. Also, Sera knows that Akai is FBI.

The Suzuki Corporation holds a hot balloon competition, and Sonoko, Ran, and Conan take part in it. When one of the competitors' balloon is crashed by another champion's balloon, a woman falls out and crashed on impact. The champion is suspected but Conan thinks there is another real culprit behind the competitors. Later, he lets Sonoko fall asleep and figures out the real culprit.

Conan and Kogoro are on the way back home near a bus stop in a rainy night, but not long later a car stops and one man is lying on the driver seat and another man called Tsutsumi Naohiro is crashed and found dead, just as Officer Takagi and Joseph passing by too. The driver, Kikuchi Toshiaki, after waking up from the impact, he implied that he crashed off Naohiro when he drove on the wet road. Paramedics also find a suicide nearby. Conan even finds something odd during the investigation and he eventually solves the case with the voice of Kogoro.

Conan runs into the two men in black from before on the Shinkansen bullet train. Upon investigating, he finds out they only resemble the two men. Using his new glasses and a bug, Conan overhears their conversation about a bomb in a black suitcase on board. Conan is able to narrow down the location of the suitcase leaving four suspects. He is able to figure out who has the bomb at the last moment and with his Power-Enhancing Kick Shoes invented by Agasa, Conan manages to kick it off the train just in time. Agasa invents the Power-Enhancing Kick Shoes and updates his glasses with a Microphone and listening device.

Kudo Shinichi just solved the Aquarium Case, but accidentally let Ran’s phone fall into the sewer, so he says he’d buy her a new one and promises to bring her to Tropical Land if she could win the Karate Tournament. But in the Karate Tournament, where Makoto Kyogoku can be seen as well, Kudo has to leave in the middle of the Tournament due to a Crime at the Private Mansion. Ran eventually won the Tournament and Kudo kept his second promise. While at the Tropical Land, he encounters the Roller Coaster murder case, which led to the event of Detective Conan. In New York, After failing to capture Vermouth, Jodie Starling and Akai Shuichi move to Japan to continue the pursuit. 2 months after the Roller Coaster murder case, an investigation is made by the Black Organization to find Shinichi’s trail, and it is concluded that he is dead. This special contains new scenes with BO members from a point at the beginning of the series.

On the way there Conan thinks over what he knows about Masumi and the girl, Mary, who is living with her, but his thoughts are interrupted by Haibara, who is dead tired after chasing after a cockroach all night. When they arrive at the department store, they see it already decorated for Christmas. Ayumi and Haibara approach the makeup counter, and Haibara demands that they get to try on some makeup since they are customers. The counter workers try to deny them since they are too young. Upon Haibara's insistence they get the makeup (Mascara lining) anyway, but Haibara sorely disappoints the counter worker's hops for a sale to their mothers. After the meal Agasa reveals another surprise, that he had also won a shopping ticket so that they could buy themselves early Christmas presents. Ayumi, Genta, Mitsuhiko, and Haibara all walk off to select their favorite presents, blissfully ignoring the fact that the ticket is worth only ¥10,000 (roughly $100). Conan and Agasa observe the restaurant chef, Ujiyasu Hosogoe, getting told by another chef that a troublesome customer had called again, and Ujiyasu telling him to inform the customer to meet him in the stairwell. After half an hour has passed, Conan hears screaming coming from the stairwell and rushes in to find Ujiyasu has been stabbed. He said that the culprit ran down the stairs so Conan has the Detective Boys run to the stairwell and remember every detail about the culprit when they see him running down. The police are able to round up three suspects, but the Detective Boys unexpectedly give three completely different descriptions of who they think is the culprit is, and Genta mentions that he thinks the culprit had the number 2 on him.

The culprit is Takashi Kamaya. Kamaya took his girlfriend on a date to the restaurant. He called Hosogoe and told him that he had found out the secret ingredient in the recipe to impress his girlfriend. But Hosogoe told him that he didn't use the ingredient anymore and ended up recognising Kamaya, revealing that he worked in the restaurant earlier to Kamaya's date. She ended up dumping him and Kamaya blamed Hosogoe for this, which formed the basis for his motive. Afterwards, Haibara rubs mascara off of her eye, and Conan sees that the smeared mascara makes her face look like that of that girl Mary who stays with Masumi. Conan sees a possible resemblance between Haibara and Mary.
