File 1 - Part 1

Richard is at a hotel having his picture taken with fans by mystery magazine editor Yutaka Nanbara, much to Rachel and Conan’s dismay. Beside Yutaka is the beautiful Miwako Najima, a recent college graduate and mystery writer. She plans to celebrate her graduation with friends later on and excuses herself to go get her manuscript to give to Yutaka.

On the 5th floor of the hotel, Miwako walks into her room to find a mysterious person, represented by the traditional black humanoid, going through her laptop. Miwako, apparently knowing the individual, shows them that it is too late if they were looking to tamper with her transcript, shocking the individual. She has named her project, Nightmare Escape, and further explains that she changed some details in her manuscript as to not involve anyone she knew.

Miwako also shows a number of floppy disks containing police investigations and past crimes which she uses as research to give her stories and future novels more depth and realism. After Miwako realizes she is late turning her manuscript in, the individual takes a floppy disk and throws it out the window, causing Miwako to look over the balcony of her room. The individual creepingly grins, walks up on Miwako and grabs her by the ankle, causing Miwako to dangerously tilt forward …

While downstairs, Richard is talking with Yukata when suddenly Miwako’s terror filled scream is heard. The group looks outside to see Miwako’s lifeless body laying on the ground, her head laying in a pool of her blood. The killer makes their way to Miwako’s laptop and begins deleting her manuscript and wiping the keyboard with a cloth. They walk out, noticing three women nearby.

An investigation is launched into Miwako’s death and a saddened Yutaka proclaims that she committed suicide, though Richard isn’t ready to come to that conclusion yet. Inside Miwako’s room, they discover her laptop. Conan manages to recover a deleted file entitled “Nightmare Escape” from the laptop’s trash bin. It had been deleted at exactly 2:33, and Miwako’s death was approximately at 2:30, meaning someone had tampered with the laptop after Miwako was killed. An indention is found near the chair. Three women are interviewed as they were standing near Miwako’s room and all three did not see anything or anyone, with the exception of the bell girl, go in and out at the time of the crime.

Three suspects are named: the hotel manager, Higashida, and two of his employees, the bell girl Shizuko Nishioka and hotel valet Toshiaki Kitagami. Their alibis and movements before, during, and after the crime are thoroughly checked. Higashida explains that there were no other guests on the 5th floor. Toshiaki and Shizuko were making beds and preparing rooms on opposite ends, and both state that they never went inside Miwako’s room. When a floppy disk outside in the bushes is discovered and one missing from Miwako’s collection is noted, Conan begins to suspect that Miwako’s brutal death was the product of foul play, but heavy hitting questions linger in the mind of the young determined detective: “Who else was in Miwako’s room, what could have made the imprint on the floor, and if truly a murder, how did the killer get out and away without being detected?”

File 2 - Part 2

A quick examination of Miwako’s corpse reveals no signs of an immediate struggle. The only signs of injury are those most likely sustained from the fall. There were no other traumatic injuries to report, further cementing the theory that Miwako jumped to her own death. When no fingerprints were found on the keyboard of Miwako’s laptop, suspicions begin to arise that someone wiped it clean.

A floppy disk is found in a tree underneath the balcony. Conan notices a mysterious figure roaming around the hotel apparently in search of something. The figure looks up at Conan when he calls out but leaves soon after. The floppy disk is recovered and analyzed. On it is the contents of Nightmare Escape, a story based on true events which follows a criminal couple on the run after they deceived an elderly man out of his fortune. While the couple was never arrested, the story focuses heavily on the psychological state of the two after their crime. At the end of the story, the criminal is revealed to be a hotel employee, having adopted a disguise to cover their tracks.

Conan asks a question to one of the women who was near Miwako’s room when was killed. He goes and accidentally bumps into Shizuko and asks her if he could see her make a bed, to which she replies that all the rooms are done. Conan drops the idea and a police officer walks in to announce that another set of fingerprints besides Miwako’s was found on the floppy disk.

Conan tranquillizes Richard and explains his theory. Given that Miwako Najima had organized a file of police reports and past investigations and was intending to use them in future projects, she had no intention on committing suicide. This is evidenced by the fact that she was planning on going out to celebrate her recent graduation. The balcony from which she fell upon had a railing which would have prevented such an incident to occur. Putting into account that Miwako has frequently visited the hotel in the past, she would have known of such a danger.

Furthermore, there were no drugs nor alcohol found or reported in her system; an accidental stumble over the railing is simply out of the question. It is no wonder why another pair of fingerprints, besides Miwako’s, was found on the floppy disk. They threw the floppy disk out of the room, causing Miwako to go to the veranda and see where it had landed in the branches of the tree; it was apart of the killer’s plan. After an unknowing Miwako got close enough, they pushed her off, instantly killing her the moment her head struck the ground. The killer sat in the chair, explaining the crevice in the carpet, wiped the computer of fingerprints after deleting Miwako’s story and left without being noticed. The fingerprints that was found besides actually belong to her killer, who is revealed to be Toshiaki Kitagami.

As Toshiaki is an employee of the hotel, is it common for his fingerprints to be on various items throughout a normal hotel room. The situation changes if his fingerprints are on items they have no business having them and it wouldn’t be long before more questions are asked. This is why Toshiaki was wandering around underneath the tree a few moments ago; he was in search of the floppy disk he threw out of Miwako’s room.

To escape the crime scene, Toshiaki actually had an accomplice aid in his criminal wrongdoing. That accomplice is Shizuko Nishioka, the bell girl. All of the rooms on the 5th floor are done in perfection with the exception of Miwako’s room given the active crime investigation in progress. As part of Shizuko’s job, she pushes a cart from room to room doing her routine duties. When she was done with the room before Miwako’s, she turned around for a reason. That reason was to shield Toshiaki with the bell cart, who proceeded to crawl on his knees back to the elevator. This way, he dodged his presence to the three girls in the hallway next to Miwako’s room. They pretend to meet once the dark deeds are done and proceed to the lobby.

In Miwako’s story, Nightmare Escape, the criminal flees the scene and disguises himself as an employee of the hotel. By one mere stroke of coincidence, the criminal meets his elderly victim who just so happens to be staying at the same hotel and things go south thereafter. If the elderly victim from Toshiaki’s past crime is brought forth, they will no doubt testify that Toshiaki and Shizuko are in fact the criminal couple that deceived them of his fortune, eerily as done in Miwako’s story. To seal Toshiaki for his crimes, Conan reveals that the second set of fingerprints belongs Toshiaki; if memory serves correctly, Toshiaki’s occupation is a hotel valet, his primary duties are to handle guests’ vehicles at ground floors and garages. In other words, he has no business going past the hotel lobby, much less being in Miwako’s room located on the 5th floor

Toshiaki confesses in defeat that Miwako changed the elderly character to herself in the end of her novel. Back in the day, Miwako volunteered to care for the elderly and used to talk with them. Toshiaki had just met his elderly victim at the hotel. As if things couldn’t get any worse, his elderly victim was one of Miwako’s patients. As Miwako started working on her novel, using the past investigations and police reports on hand, she discovered Toshiaki and Shizuko’s real identities, much to the shock and horror of the criminals, and that they were hiding in the hotel.

Believing they had been caught, Toshiaki and Shizuko prepared for the worst case scenario, until Miwako made a deal with them: “tell her every possible detail of their past crime as well as their mental state and psychological well being that they experienced while committing said crime, or be turned over to the police”, thus revealing Miwako to not only be a tragic victim of a horrific murder, but a scheming blackmailing con artist. Despite being in compliance with Miwako’s blackmail demands and having her murdered, Toshiaki and Shizuko both realize that there is no changing their past, regardless of what they had done, there is no escape from what is to come next: their punishment.

The Beach of Murderous Intent

File 7 - Part 1

Conan, Ran, and Sonoko go on a beach trip and stay at the pension owned by a man named Keita Okagami. At the pension, there are two more guest staying with them: Okagami's old friend Tokunosuke Hamazaki, a former bank employee whose employer was connected to the corruption but resigned, and Toshiya Hayasaka, an interpret reporter keens on interviewing him about the stated incident. Later that day, the group heard Hamazaki arguing with someone in his room, and a mysterious woman is shown fleeing from the building shortly after. The next day, Hamazaki is found bludgeoned to death in his room, with the woman appears and reveals herself to be Rina, Hamazaki's wife.

In a stroke of bad luck, they met Miwako who managed to deduce his identity as she was once a volunteer who took care of the old man that they had decieved. In exchange for not turning them to the police, Miwaki had Kitagawa tell her every single details regarding the crime, his feeling while committing it, and all of his escapes up until the present. Once he discovered that Miwako had written his and Nishioka's altered story into a novel, he sought to silence her before the final part that contains the fact that they're hiding at the hotel could be published. However, the two have a breakdown, as they realizes that even though they murdered her, their inescapable end cannot be changed, ever.
