Situation

Ayumi sees a person's face after he blows his nose, which looks like the one who has been on the run for 5 years, so she calls for Conan, Haibara, Genta, and Mitsuhiko. While discussing the reward and how they should tackle the issue, a man named Koji Tanaka passes by and gets caught up in it as soon as he and Conan see the suspect's face.

To this day, Kito is still on the run. The reward for catching him is 3 million yen.

However, Tanaka insists on chasing the person alone while having the kids call the police instead. But the suspected person slipped onto the river, forcing Conan, Haibara, and the Detective Boys to save him with the Elasticity Suspender.

The Detective Boys manage to save him, but for some reason, Tanaka fled the scene.

However, the suspected person is actually Taro Yamada, who has been struggling in life and is the doppelgänger of the wanted criminal, Ken Kito. The police confirm their distinction and admit that they have previously received many tips on Yamada. However, with Tanaka nowhere to be found, the Detective Boys help the police sketch Koji Tanaka's appearance so they can investigate further.

Attempted murder

Location: Koji Tanaka's apartment

Victims: Ayumi Yoshida, Mitsuhiko Tsuburaya, and Genta Kojima

Culprit: Koji Tanaka

The Detective Boys happen to discover the apartment where Tanaka lives, and are about to be silenced by him when the police Conan calls arrive in time.

As it turns out, Ken Kito underwent facial surgery five years ago to hide his identity, and has since become Koji Tanaka. Tanaka intended to kill Taro Yamada by pushing him into the river to make the corpse harder to find. He would then go to Yamada's apartment, wipe off Yamada's fingerprints, and apply his own fingerprints to confuse the police into thinking Yamada was Kito, and that Kito is dead.

Just as Tanaka is trying to silence the Detective Boys, the police, whom Conan called, arrive just in time and subdue the man.

Aftermath

Despite a stern scolding from Megure, the Detective Boys set out to find their next wanted criminal, much to the dissatisfaction of Haibara and, notably, Conan.

Trivia

• In the TV broadcast, a special Next Conan Hint and End Card are shown. The hint is TWILIGHT!!! (with King Gnu's logo now fully shown), and the end card shows members of King Gnu, Conan, and Kogoro. It promotes the band performing the One-eyed Flashback theme song on Yomiuri TV's Best Hits Kayosai 2025, which featured an anime version of the performance with Gosho Aoyama supervising the character design.
• The names of the other wanted criminals on posters are entirely made up and read as sentences relating to crime :
  • Jin Kanenashi (金梨 陳) sounds similar to "person without money" (moneyless reads as "kanenashi" (金無し), and person is read as "hito" or "jin" (人)) ;
  • Sachio Yada (矢田 詐為男) sounds similar to "convicted fraudster" ("詐為" is a shortened version of "sagizai", meaning fraud, "男" (otoko) means man, and the last name "Yada" or "Yata" (矢田) sounds similar to "yatta" (やった) meaning "I did it") ;
  • Eijiro Dorobo (盗矛 影次郎) sounds similar to "shady robber" ("盗" means to steal and can read as "dō" while "矛" reads as "bō", sounding phonetically similar to "dorobō" (泥棒) meaning "thief" and "影" in the first name means "shadow/shade") ;
  • Kasuhito Haneji (羽地 粕人) sounds similar to "punished lender" (the last name Haneji (羽地) can also read as "bachi", which also means "punishment" (罰) while "kasu" (粕) also means "to lend" (貸す) and "人" means person).
