| Shinichi and Ran are having their conversation in the middle of their outing at the Beika Aquarium when a man is found dead due to a fatal stab to his heart. Megure and his subordinates arrive at the scene, and are speechless at how Shinichi is able to carry out the investigation by himself. Shinichi narrows the suspects down, and finally, solves the case with ease. After some unfortunate events following this case, Ran loses her new phone down the sewer, prompting Shinichi to promise Ran that they would go to Tropical Land. This leads us into scenes where Shinichi is seen scouting Tropical Land, looking for the best things to do for his promise to Ran. But they'd never get to enjoy their entire outing...

| Conan and Kogoro end up being honourable guests of a special event held in Furai city following a nomination of someone claiming themselves to be none other than Inspector Megure. However, Megure denies any knowledge of this when asked by Conan as Kogoro. In addition, Megure also tells about the recent serial jewelry robberies with no sign of being sold domestically, and a robbery just happens today with an alarming level of amateurism, as the thieves were caught so easily that it makes Megure wonder if someone wants to toy with the police. Soon, Conan is able to figure out that the whole things that happened to him, Kogoro, and Megure are not an actual joke, but a premeditated plot regarding the stolen jewelry. | ||||||||||

| Kogoro, Ran, and Conan are arriving at the ryokan of the Misasa hot spring when they see Yasuto Utsubuki and Sachiyo Yumemiya talking about their parents not allowing the two to be married. At the Yumemiya Ryokan, the family notices the woman they met earlier when she was upset about the parents is one of the waitresses of the ryokan. They also meet the two Kurayoshi officers that they have met in a past case, as the duo are celebrating the capture of a serial bag snatcher last week. Conan happens to discover that some other people do have conflict with the Acting proprietress of Yumemiya Inn, Kazuko Yumemiya, with their own matters. The situation gets gradually worse, as Sachiyo ends up being kidnapped for ransom after attempting to hide in the warehouse of the Misasa Violin Museum for a while. | ||||||||||

| Yasuto points out that Sachiyo has never blamed anyone else for the unfortunate events that happened to her, which suggests a high likelihood that the kidnapping was staged. The theory is not correct though, as the truth is Sachiyo’s intention of hiding for a while was being taken advantage of by a victim of an inheritance dispute between families from previous generations, with the intent of revenge. | ||||||||||

| Agasa and Conan are on their way to Kanagawa to try out some food with Ran, Sonoko, and Kogoro at a French restaurant, whose owner happens to be a fan of the Sleeping Kogoro, when the two are pulled over by a policewoman for speeding. After giving Agasa instruction and a fine ticket, the policewoman looks at Conan and smiles before she leaves, which makes Conan question himself if he’s ever met her before.
In the bathroom of the restaurant, Agasa happens to meet a safe company director whose appearance looks identical to him, Kinji Nanjou. The professor is asked by the director to act as a body double to him, without the two acknowledging the upcoming kidnap that is going to happen. Conan, who happens to figure that Agasa is abducted when following the two people, with one having thought to be Nanjou, alerts the others while he pursues the kidnappers. Noticing the follower behind, the kidnappers proceed to show the boy that the game of chasing, and the game of his life as well, is over. Fortunately, the mysterious policewoman from the beginning of the story, later introduced as Chihaya Hagiwara, appears in time to rescue the boy. The two continue their pursuit, despite the increasing odds, and Conan's determination reminds Chihaya of her deceased younger brother. | ||||||||||

| Despite setting up a roadblock, the kidnappers somehow manage to get through. However, one of the drivers that passed the roadblock, which Chihaya and Conan are stopping at, left a question to the police on that roadblock if there was an event going on, as the driver had seen a person buying 20 bottles of tea, and an umbrella for unknown reason. Conan is able to figure that the kidnappers used the aforementioned items to change the color of the car. But they have to hurry, as there is news of the real director being arrested.

| The Mouri family is at a restaurant that they don’t know is having a matchmaking party today, and they have to go somewhere else to eat because the restaurant is full, not knowing that Kogoro has dropped his key. When they return to the restaurant to look for the key, there is a scream from inside the building, and in addition to the body of Anju Tomari, one of the two girls who had caught the eye of many people at that party, they also meet Chihaya and Inspector Jugo Yokomizo.
