Season 5

The fifth season of the Detective Conan anime consists of the episodes aired in the year 2000.

It begun airing in January 3, 2000 and finished airing on December 18, 2000, with a total of 45 episodes. There are 20 manga-adapted episodes and 25 anime-original episodes. There were breaks totaling to 6 weeks.

A man is shot to death by his subordinates, they call themselves the Organizer of Shadows. Twenty years later, Conan helps Ran and Mouri solve a puzzle which wins them an all-expense-paid trip on a giant boat built for a small number of people. After 11 people have entered the boat, the boat leaves. Mouri meets an inspector he use to work with on the boat and meet up with Heiji Hattori. After a man is murdered, they learn a man named Kanoi who was the leader of the Organizer of Shadows is on the boat. After a bombing, and discovering two dead bodies, Conan solves the case, realizing there were two separate culprits; one as the bomber, and one as the murderer. They were part of the Organizer of Shadows. As evidenced in a flashback in episode 189, it's implied that Ran knows who Conan is. Ran and Conan share a quiet moment together. Also, when Heiji knew he had to take off his clothes to signal for help, he made sure to not take off his pants and his onamori good luck charm that Kazuha gave him. He gets embarrassed when Ran and Conan catch him admiring it and thinking about her.   Kogoro's good friend, a retired detective from the police force, helps Kogoro and his friends solve the case.

Mouri is called by Sango Yokomizo to investigate a suspicious murder where three people admit to killing a man for hitting him on the head. His posture showed the death to be a heart attack. They are all actors in an actor studio, their boss was the manager. After seeing the evidence, they find out that all four of them have attacked him but not killed him. He was killed by his wife who stole his heart pills and he died of a heart attack.

On the way from school, Conan and Ai Haibara by chance find Gin's car on the street and decide to investigate. Conan places a tracker in their car. Haibara spots Gin and Vodka across the street on their way back to their car. Conan and Haibara quickly get out the car and hide outside while they leave. Conan keeps track of what their doing through his special glasses, however, Gin eventually catches on to the tracker and destroys it as well as learns that Sherry is still alive. They are eventually led to a movie director's party at the Haido City Hotel where a chandelier falls on someone (Mr. Nomiguchi) while in the dark, thus, ending the episode with who's responsible for the murder. Introduction of Pisco, Naomichi Mugikura, Vermouth, and The Boss of the Black Organization, the latter of which is mentioned in name only. Part of a three part story arc on the Black Organization. Conan and Ai suspect that a Black Organization, Pisco, is going to be at a hotel to plan a murder. Haibara's past is once again explored, and it is hinted that she has some sort of history with Gin, who takes very special interest in finding her.

In continuance from the last episode, everyone is wondering how the chandelier fell in the first place. Conan knows it's Pisco of the Black Organization, but the police are stumped. When Inspector Megure can't hold anyone anymore, everyone at the party flees toward the doorway. In the mix of all the commotion, Haibara is kidnapped by someone and confined to a wine cellar somewhere in the Haido Hotel. Conan tells her to drink some sake that will temporary turn her back to an adult to help her escape. Will Haibara be able to escape the clutches of Gin and Vodka? Haibara takes the alcohol to turn her back into Shiho. But, the alcohol takes effect in the next episode...

In the conclusion of Conan and Ai's encounter with the Black Organization, Ai is trapped in a building with Gin and Vodka after she is kidnapped by them (previous episode). Now she must try to escape (Ai is in her adult form temporarily), but it won't be easy. She makes her way to the roof only to encounter Gin and Vodka who both shoot her down and almost kill her until Conan arrives on the scene. He uses his special bow tie to sound like an older person who distracts them, as well as shoots Gin with a needle, while she jumps down the chimney and barely escapes death. Gin shoots himself in the arm to keep himself awake while Vodka attempts to shoot Conan, but he escapes. Conan and Ai eventually encounter Pisco back inside, but due to an accidental fire, the two get away before Pisco kills them. Gin and Vodka arrive and Gin kills Pisco without hesitation for failing to finish the job. Near the end of the episode, a new female member named Vermouth discusses the dilemma with Gin and Vodka. Haibara returns to her adult form, Shiho Miyano. Gin kills Pisco, and Vermouth is shown at the end, discussing the situation with both Gin and Vodka. Gin once again takes very special interest in Shiho.

Conan and the group go to a coffee shop. Nearby, two men are having a meeting. One of them gets up to go to the bathroom, and while he's gone, a truck slams into the coffee shop and smashes the other man who was still seated. Conan realizes it was a planned murder and finds evidence through the truck, and the man's cut.

Mouri is invited to investigate a case where a man's wife is being stalked by an unknown stalker. Conan realizes these occurrences are related to the song Nocturne of Red. During a party, a blackout occurs and a man's figure is seen embracing his wife forcibly. Afterwards he disappears. Later a famous musicianship is seemingly killed by the client.

The case is solved, the mysterious man was figured out to be a statue hanged by a fishing rod. The culprit was revealed to be the man's wife, who wanted to protect the company and her husband from a scandal. Afterwards, Conan gives Ran flowers. Ran interprets the flower's with the meaning Invincible and gets angry at Conan.

The Detective Boys are walking home one day when they discover two s shaped hooks and a ring with the initials M to A, a wedding ring. They decide to investigate seeing it as an S.O.S. After a false alarm, Conan realizes one of the person who answered the door was not the actual person. He tranquilizers the culprit and saves the woman who was tied up.

One day, The Detective Boys were bored so they picked up receipts in a convenience store to guess what the people are buying for dinner. Genta picks up a weird receipt with food items, a dust bin, a container, a handler light, rechargeable batteries, thin latex gloves, and chlorine. Conan figures out the man is trying to make the same poisoned bait used to kill moles. After searching around town to the stores they visit, they find out the approximation of the man's house and begin searching for bikes with handler lights and no basket. After finding him and following him one night, they find out he was trying to poison a dog to death. His motive was to silence the vicious and loud dog so he may once again walk his favorite path in peace.

Mouri, Ran, and Conan are invited by the hostess of a car accident charity named Shou Beniko. While driving, they find a message from the Phantom of the Cursed Masks who tells them they should not go. Once there, they find other famous celebrities; a baseball player, a prophet, a rockstar, and a man who lost his wife in a Hit and Run incident. The mansion they will be staying at is a huge mansion divided by the east and west side; and the only room connecting the two sides is the mask room, which is locked at midnight due to Shobel's mask. They were created by a famous man who lost everything and became engrossed in his masks; once he created 200 of them, he was found dead in his room surrounded with bloody masks. People who have owned his mask have suffered tragic fates. Shou who now owns all 200 masks has a priest place a seal on the curse, but the room will locked at midnight to prevent them from wandering. During their stay, Shou was murdered in a locked room with masks surrounding her and a dagger in her throat. Conan later figures out the trick and reveals the culprit. The culprit reveals that his mother was blamed for a hit and run incident and murdered by Shou, who then took fame and profit from her charity.

Mouri, Ran, and Conan are driving by when an arrow almost hits Mouri. Afterwards, they stay at a hotel when an actor is found dead with a bullet in his head and all the evidence suggests it is the work of an outsider.

Sango Yokomizo is brought onto the scene. Conan later solves the case by showing how the culprit tried to place false evidence to lure the police to think it was an outsider. He later shows that a gun was not used to shoot the bullet but an arrow was. The culprit is arrested and he reveals he wanted to write a perfect crime script that no one could solve. Afterwards, Mouri is offered a chance to star in his own show but Ran forces him to drive away before a deal could be made.

Mouri is invited to a house as to impress the client's mother who is a finance trader, simply a loaner. Later, loaner is murdered and with the clues, the suspects are her son, daughter, or maid. Conan manages to solve the case and reveals the television was used to create the gunshot noise.

The detective boys are on a camping trip and start to explore a cave. While there, Genta spots three men carrying a body with a bullet hole in the head. They mention they just robbed a bank. Genta screams and Conan hides the Detective Boys but is shot in the process. Conan leaves a message for Haibara to call 110. Conan shows the Detective Boys out as far as possible before losing consciousness. The footsteps of their pursuers are then heard quickly catching up The Detective Boys must learn how to survive this experience.

The detective boys hide before they were found and escaped from the convicts. Afterwards the Police arrested them. Conan goes into surgery and Ran donates her blood since they ran out of Conan's blood type. At night, Haibara sneaks into the hospital. She wakes Conan up and holds a handgun towards him. After lecturing him about the danger of revealing himself, she gives him a third option to distract Ran from suspecting he is Shinichi. It is confirmed that Ran once again knows that Conan is really Shinichi. Heiji creates a plan to help out Kudo.

Ran is the heroine for the school play until a murder occurs. In the seat it's Kudo Shinichi here to solve the case. Heiji's disguise as Kudo is busted when Kazuha notices. (1) Heiji does his best to pretend to be Shinichi, before Kazuha discovers the obvious make-up... (2) Agasa invents the Voice-Changing Face Mask. If something doesn't stop it, Ran may kiss Araide in a play! Sonoko however, has her own plans...

The Black Knight solves the case. Afterwards he removes his helmet to review who he is. It's Shinichi Kudo! He then collapses from a fever, thinking he'll turn back into a child. He then wakes up remaining normal, realizing that he's finally cured from the poison. Shinichi returns! He has somehow found another way to return to his adult form. Haibara dresses as Conan, to ease Ran's suspicions. It's is also the first time that Kazuha sees Shinichi in person (as up until now she thought he might be a girl). When Sonoko saw Shinichi, her plan all along then became to put Shinichi in the Black Knight costume, so that Ran and Shinichi could finally share their first kiss. However, the murder occurs before that can happen.

Shinichi resumes his life again and takes Ran out to the fanciest restaurant in town. A murder occurs and Shinichi goes to solve it before he was going to admit something important to Ran. Shinichi takes Ran out on a dinner date, at the same place where his Father proposed to his Mother, promising to Ran that he has something important to tell her.

Shinichi solves the case but his time has run out and he reverts back to Conan. Ran cries, feeling that Shinichi chooses cases over being with her. Unfortunately for Shinichi, time has run out, and before he can tell Ran the truth, he turns back into Conan. As Conan, he tells a heartbroken Ran, that Shinichi had told him to tell her "Wait for me." Although completely heartbroken, Ran understands, and promises in her head that she will wait for him.

The next day, Conan asks Haibara for the antidote but she denies saying he could build resistance to it or it could kill him. A woman by the name of Haruna comes to Mouri's office with a music box asking to find the owner of this whom she only contacted by pager messages. She tells them the music box was given to her on Christmas day. Conan finds out that the missing notes in the music box are the notes "Mo De Ru". They find the house owner's place by contacting using his pager number. Once there they find out Shuugo was an old man who died on December 6 last year, 19 days before she received the box. Shuugo's wife who died three years before him was also named Haruna. The family ask her where he hid his stamp which is worth 200 million yen. Shuugo's family invites them to stay over. That night Ran and Haruna see and old man's shadow with a cane fly by. They find out one of the family members was hit on the head by an unknown culprit. Conan asks Haibara for the antidote, but she says that it still needs to be fully tested, and that he may be resistant to it.

Mouri is put to sleep and Conan solves the case. The family finds the stamps to pay off their debts. One of the family members named Shirgo is revealed to be the one who took over for the grandpa when texting to her and was the one who gave her the box. Shirgo and Haruna now maintain a very close relationship.

Ran, Sonoko, and Conan befriend a couple at a restaurant, but Ran finds the man's act suspicious. After visiting them at their home, Ran learns that the man's wife has an extremely expensive insurance and that he may be trying to wear her body out to kill her. After inspecting the newly built house for Sick building syndrome, Conan finds out that her husband did something to the car. They later catch him spraying poison into the ventilation system of the car. He reveals that his company pressured him along with his want for a car. Ran's deduction skills finally grow, as she solves a case on her own, with a little help from Conan!

Inspector Sango Yokomizo enters the scene. After investigating, Conan reveals that a cover was used to direct the fume into the car. He reveals who the culprit is. The culprit reveals that the victim scammed him out of his car, which he sent his company almost to bankruptcy to own.

Eri Kisaki meets up with another two lawyers, one male, and the other female. Both attended school with her in the past. Detective Mouri later gets drunk and falls asleep in the bedroom of the female lawyer's room. When they return to the room, she's dead, and the door is locked from the inside, making Detective Mouri the prime suspect. Eri and Kogoro's feelings for each other are once again on display. Eri is determined to prove that Kogoro is innocent, more determined than she would be for any other case. It is also their anniversary.

Eri pretends Mouri is the criminal only to fool who she believes to be the real culprit. She, Conan, and Inspector Misao Yamamura search for clue's to clear his name, and find a way to trick the true culprit into revealing that he's the criminal. Afterwards, Mouri tries to ask Eri to return home with him, since it has been a year after their divorce. Eri pretends not to hear and later at home, listens again to the recording of Mouri's plead for her return. Misao is once again shown to be a bumbling detective, however, he is able to lend a helping hand in solving the case! Kogoro asks for Eri to return home to him, admitting that he completely misses her. Eri however, pretends not to hear, and secretly records it and listens to the message over and over again when she gets to her office, smiling happily.

The daughter of the murdered man from many years ago plans to take revenge on all the passengers present during that time. The bus is on a crash-course, and Conan intervenes to confront her about what she's doing. Is there anyway to stop the bus from crashing?

Mouri, Ran, and Conan are staying at a hotel where they meet the twins from the case of the cursed mask. Later, an actress comes and causes trouble. The next day, she is found hanged in her room.

Conan notices that this is not a suicide but a murder. He later proves that the culprit hang-glided to the hotel and went back by stowing in the trunk of a car. The culprit reveals that the actress caused his brother to spend much money and indirectly caused his death. He reveals he tried to ask the actress to say a few words on his brother's grave but she refused and he decided to kill her.

A serial arsonist sets huge fires across the city and Takagi and Sato with the Detective Boys are out to solve it. It turns out this is also the day the case of Sato's father's death will be annulled, and the bank robber will be able to keep the money he stole from the bank. Sato sets out to solve both cases before the day ends, but Takagi has been attacked by the arsonist. Masayoshi Sato's first appearance. Sato's feelings for avenging her father's death are displayed. When Takagi says a line similar to the last thing Sato's father said to her on the day he was killed, she gets very scared. Takagi and Sato's budding romantic feelings for each other are once again on display. Sato lets Takagi use her treasured handcuffs, the ones her father used. After she learns that Takagi has disappeared, Sato is also very determined to find him.   Sato's past is explored. Her father was also a policeman, but he was killed by one of his own close friends. Sato is set out to find this person.

After Ai reveals the pattern of the arsonist attack, the Ayumi, Genta, and Mitsuhiko run into the arsonist who attempts to kill them. Takagi is revealed to be inside the warehouse the arsonist set fire to. He can't break the handcuffs due to them being a momentum from Sato's dead father. Conan manages to arrive in time and stop the arsonist, but does not realize Takagi is in the burning warehouse. Meanwhile, the clock strikes midnight and the suspected bank robber explains everything to Sato, saying how his father saved his life. Sato reveals that due to the typhoon in Italy, the annul date was moved forward by one day. Takagi seemingly dies but appears with his handcuffs attached to the window bars. He collapses in Sato's arms. Even though Takagi knew that he could have shot the handcuffs to escape from the trap that was set, he was still determined to never shoot them, and find another way out, knowing how much those handcuffs meant to Sato. A bewildered Sato sees Takagi, her feelings for him finally growing stronger when she learns that not only is he safe, but that he cared so much to not even touch the handcuffs. Due to this, Sato and Takagi go on a date! However, the date turns into another case, as Megure calls them both before they can even begin the date, to monitor an escaped convict.   We finally learned what happened to Sato's father on the day he died.

Mouri is carried by Ran and accompanied by Conan one night picking him up from a bar. While walking they witness a fight in an apartment. The next day a murder occurs. One of the man who's heard arguing comes to Mouri for help to prove his innocence. The man has made good suggestions on where to find evidence which are in fact too good. Conan finds out the man is lying and is trying to trick Mouri into proving his false alibi.
208	223-224	The Entrance to the Maze: The Anger of the Colossus (1 Hour Special)	October 9, 2000			TV Original	Self-service ropeway
Mouri, Ran, and Conan are invited for a ceremony for a ropeway which is built through a giant Goddess Statue on the mountains by Doumouto Guze. They learn that the there is a rumor about a curse by the goddess' anger and Mouri was invited to disprove it. After riding through the ropeway on the opening day, Doumouto, who has disappeared from the ropeway cart, is later found dead on the goddess' hand. Inspector Sango Yokomizo enters the scene, and begins an investigation, believing that this may be an impossible crime.

The Detective boys excluding Ai, are traveling through a winding path on Mt Ryujin. There they witness a derailed car fall off the mountain. The man has died and through the evidence, Conan concludes another car rammed into that car. Conan decides to leave it to the police as they are trained for basic cases. Mitsuhiko finds a code from the car wreckage which he assumes has nothing to do with the incident because he presumed it was a normal accident. He hides it from Conan since he wants to solve it himself. Later at the cabin, he solves the code and takes Ayumi and Genta with him.

Ran, Conan, and Kogoro are invited to a home where there is a body of water that surrounds it. The water is able to change colors via the time of day, and is surrounding a small temple where the headmaster prays everyday. They meet the various people in the home, but discover that the headmaster is found dead in the temple. Inspector Sango Yokomizo is on the scene, and through the help of Conan, believes that it was no a suicide, but a murder. How could the killer have found a way to sneak into the headmaster's temple, especially when the only entrance can be viewed by a window that was in the room that everyone was in at the time of the murder?

After some investigating by Conan, Kogoro, and Yokomizo, Conan discovers enough clues to figure out who the murderer is, as well as how they reached the headmaster. Conan solves the case after discovering a small, risky, and very daring blind spot that can be used as an alternative route to the entrance of the temple.
212	228	Mushrooms, Bears, and the Detective Boys (Part 1)	November 6, 2000			V27 - F10 ~ V28 - F2 (273-275)	Hunter
Conan, Agasa, Haibara, and the Detective Boys all go to a forest that is used for looking for mushrooms. It is split in half. One half is used for mushroom hunting, while the other half is used for hunting animals. Both sides are divided by a large, but easily climbable fence. After not finding much luck, Genta discovers very big mushrooms on the hunting side, and through the help of a hole in the fence, goes through that side. The search is on for Genta! However, after Haibara hurts her leg, Mitsuhiko must care for her. A man is found dead in the woods, and a hunter targets Haibara and Mitsuhiko! This is the episode where we learn of Mitsuhiko's feelings for Haibara.

Conan, Ayumi, and Agasa find Genta, and meet up with some bear hunters. The hunters are looking for a legendary bear that is said to be very dangerous. Conan discovers that a dead body was found, and finds out who the murderer was. However, when he discovers that the murderer does not mean to harm Mitsuhiko and Genta, he decides against having them to be revealed just yet. The legendary bear shows up, and the hunter who was the murderer tries to calm it down. It turns out that the hunter was saved by that bear many years before that, and had killed the man because the man had tried to call the bear out by killing its young baby. The hunter visits every year to not hunt the bear, but to make sure it is OK. He sadly turns himself in to the police. Mitsuhiko shows off good skills, taking care of Haibara's injured leg. However, he feels sad because he believes he will never be as good as Conan, who had taught him originally how to take care of injuries. Mitsuhiko's self-esteem improves tremendously when Haibara gives him a good confidence boost.

Mouri, Ran, and Conan are attending a dolphin show when a murder occurs in the hotel. The hotel room where the murder occurred was specially designed to be retro one. The clue to the murder is an automatic television that when inserted with a coin, will play for an hour. Conan reveals how the culprit used that to fake their alibi.

While driving on a family trip in the Chiba Prefecture, Kogoro's car breaks down. They stop by a house, where Conan, Ran, and Kogoro meet a lawyer, and his extended family of workers, secretaries, and friends. The lawyer is getting threatening letters from a man with the initials "T.K." The next morning, the dog, Johan, is acting strangely. The lawyer leaves the house for a fishing trip, and Ran, Kogoro, and Conan walk the dog. It reacts wildly when it sees a suspicious person in a red hat, on a boat. Later that day, the lawyer's boat is found, halfway sinking, and his body is found deep in the ocean. A local inspector and detective arrive at the scene, and the man with the initials "T.K." is found out to be an old client of the lawyers, and becomes the number one suspect. However, when they go to his apartment, they find him dead, seemingly hanging himself in a suicide. However, the clues say otherwise. Could someone have killed both the lawyer and the client?

Conan discovers that five years before this, a man was killed in a "perfect crime," by the man who had killed himself, with the initials "T.K." Conan uses this clue, as well as other clues via help from an old boat rental owner, to deduce how the lawyer was killed. He then visits the old home where the man who was killed ten years before lived, and gets information from an old lady there, and discovers a dog house sign that says "Johann." From this, Conan deduces who the murderer of both men is, and knocks out Kogoro to solve the case, trying to get the murderer to admit themselves that they had done it.

A murderer who targets young girls and beats them with a hammer badly is currently on the hunt by the police. While he police begin to search for the criminal, the case angers Megure, and puts him on the breaking point. Conan and Kogoro, along with Ran and Sonoko, are on the scene with Megure, as is Kiyonaga Matsumoto. Megure is acting very strangely, and keeps thinking about a case from the past... Whenever the past serial killer case is mentioned, Megure immediately stiffens up, and becomes all business. Ran and Sonoko are shopping for a sweater for Makoto and discuss about their love lives and it is hinted that Ran likes Shinichi and she wants to tell him how she feels but is afraid of his answer(how he feels about her) it is then revealed to us that Conan was standing next to them hearing the entire conversation and becomes very embarrassed and red-faced(which is super cute!) And then runs off to look for Kogoro. Brief pieces of Megure's past are hinted and shown.

Sonoko is now a target! Conan solves the case, but when they discover the attacker, they learn that he is in the mall, and Sonoko is his latest target. Conan and Megure hunt for him, but Conan goes to the wrong place. Megure catches the culprit before he could hurt Sonoko, and opens a very big wound on his head. Matsumoto reveals the truth about Megure's past. In the past a man was attacking girls with long skirts and a girl proposed to be bait but was badly injured along with Megure, leaving scars on both of them. The girl is revealed to be Megure's wife. Ran, Kogoro, and Conan all finally meet her when they visit Megure in the hospital. Midori Megure's first appearance. Megure saves Sonoko from the strange attacker, taking a baseball bat to the face, re-opening his scar. Megure explodes at the attacker. We learn that Midori and Juzo met each other when Midori played the role of someone who would look like someone the past serial killer would attack. After she gets attacked for real, Megure tries to save her, both of them being injured. They both fall in love with each other afterwards. The full story of Megure's past is finally revealed, as well as the reason why he always wears a hat, never wanting to take it off.
