The Detective Boys are then taught by Conan, Haibara, and Agasa, the rules of mahjong. The next day, Conan and Ran both try to help Kogoro in winning, to no avail. One of Kogoro's friends who is not playing brings in a bamboo tree, which is used in Tanabata festivals, and this leads Ran to remembering an old Tanabata festival from when her and Shinichi were younger. Ran relays a story to both Conan and Kogoro's friend, about how she wished that Eri and Kogoro would get back together, and her wish had indeed came true, for only one day, before they fought again. A mean kid from her class makes fun of Ran for having separated parents, and while Sonoko comes to Ran's aid, Shinichi just silently listens.
