Situation

Part 1

While at a camping trip, The Detective Boys are surprisingly greeted by Masumi Sera. While the Professor sets up camp and Conan chats with Masumi, Ayumi, Genta, Haibara, and Mitsuhiko venture into the woods and come across a person burying a body.

Murder

Location: Campground in Gunma forest in mountains

Victim: Unknown woman

Cause of death: Axe Wound to the back

Suspects: Hayamichi Yonezumi, Chozo Usagi, and Takeya Iwakuma

The woman was being buried by her killer when Ayumi, Mitsuhiko, Genta, and Haibara stumbled upon the cover-up. The culprit gives chase.

While the children run, Haibara alerts the police, and then they hide in a dark cabin, only to figure out it is where the culprit was earlier. To prevent them from talking, the culprit locks them in and sets the cabin blaze.

Attempted Murder

Location: Cabin inside the forest

Victims: Ai Haibara, Ayumi Yoshida, Mitsuhiko Tsuburaya, and Genta Kojima

Crime: Arson

Suspects: Hayamichi Yonezumi, Chozo Usagi, and Takeya Iwakuma

The culprit decides to silence the Detective Boys by locking them inside the cabin then set it on fire.

Inspector Yamamura arrives to the scene of the body, and later has three suspects. The only clue is a dying message of her fingers being in an odd form behind her back.

The culprit is Chozo Usagi. The woman was Chozo's girlfriend and a kindergarden teacher. The dying message was her fingers in the shape of a rabbit ([兎]usagi) shadow puppet. He killed her because she stuck him in a small dark cabin with her despite his claustrophobia. She was trying to cure him of it when Chozo had a panic attack and killed her. He then states he trapped the Detective Boys in the cabin and set it on fire. Haibara uses an antidote she prepared to become Shiho Miyano and save the others. Mitsuhiko later sends a picture of Shiho Miyano "Sherry" to Kogoro to find her and say thanks and also shows the picture to Masumi. Amuro and Subaru Okiya hack Kogoro's computer to find the image, with Sherry wearing a Mystery Train ring. The events that follow occur later in the Mystery Train case where the Black Organization returns to kill Sherry.

• When Haibara changes back to the adult form, she still speaks in a child's voice.
• Haibara wears the same shirt Conan was wearing in The Professor's Video Site.
• The people involved in the case have names related to animals :
  • Hayamichi Yonezumi (米住 速道) comes from rat (ネズミ ,nezumi) and speed (速い ,hayai) (rats are fast animals) ;
  • Chozo Usagi (宇佐木 跳三) comes from rabbit (ウサギ ,usagi) and hopping (跳ぶ ,tobu) (bunny hops) ;
  • Takeya Iwakuma (岩隈 猛也) comes from bear (クマ ,kuma) and anger (猛る ,takeru) (bears are angry animals).
