Situation

Michiko Yoshikawa invites the Detective Boys to Kosuke Omura's writing class, as she wants to learn how to write a novel. The class is held at Ryoji Nojima's house, who sponsored Omura for his books. When Nojima reads how the children write a story, he decides to take them to the basement, where he keeps many valuable books. He asks the group to start reading the book he handled for references.

During lunch break, Michiko reveals that she cut her finger on a book. Ayumi then gives Michiko a band-aid. Moments later, she suddenly collapsed. She is later taken to the hospital.

The police found out that one of the book has a highly-concentrated poison on it. Conan then realizes that the book cover color is Paris Green. It is later being confirmed by Yujiro Tamaki that it is the color that was produced using a powerful poison in the past. Michiko most likely touched the book unconsiously.

However, after Conan found a book with bloodstains and a scratch on the shelf, he knows who is the culprit.

The culprit is Kosuke Omura. The intended victim was Ryoji Nojima, but Michiko unknowingly fell into his trap. Michiko licked her wounded finger which made her swallow the poison. The cause was a poisoned box cutter blade inside the book, not the book cover. Kosuke originally planned to poison Ryoji when he cut his finger while picking up the wrongly-placed book from the shelf. Since there are poisonous books in the library, he could make it look like an accidental death. Omura admits that he when he was broke, he stole and sold Nojima's book. He was later found out by Nojima, and he was made to work like a slave because of that. Due to having reached his limit, he decided to murder Ryoji Nojima.

Aftermath

Michiko is now healthy again. She gives each of the Detective Boys a present. Conan is excited, thinking it might be another first edition of Sherlock Holmes. But after opening the wrapping, they are speechless to see that it is the novel written by Michiko. Michiko explains that she finished her novel since she had nothing to do at the hospital and self-published it. Conan laughs it off since he realizes his hopes were too high.
