Situation

Haibara and Mitsuhiko are waiting for other members of the Detective Boys, including Conan, as Mitsuhiko is excited to read his Holme story The Adventure of Abbey Grange. The group proceeds to go for a walk.

Suddenly, a stray cat catches the attention of Haibara and Mitsuhiko when they are walking. The cat takes the two to witness the scene of a murder, with another strange man.

Murder
Location: Tochihiro Hakozaki's residence
Victim: Daiki Fujinai
Time: Around 2:30 p.m
Cause of death: Blunt force trauma on the head

The police arrive at the scene as usual, Haibara then tells the other kids about the incident. She expresses her relief since Mitsuhiko was there to protect her, while we always know it is the opposite.

Meanwhile, Takagi, Megure and some other policemen are investigating the scene, and they find out that some items have been stolen. They also notice three used wine glasses, making the police consider the possibilities of a robbery caused by several robbers, but the group decided to eliminate one without proper profession to prevent the police from tracing them.

Outside, Mitsuhiko recalls the wine glasses looking identical to the one he read from his book. Conan notices that the stolen properties aren’t very much compared to the house’s infrastructure.

The police begin to interrogate the man, Tomohiro Nojima. Nojima is a long-time fan of Tochiro Hakozaki, both of them are acquainted with each other. Some other information about Hakozaki is also noted by Nojima:

  • Hakozaki is exhausted from writing his column and is currently travelling.
  • Hakozaki is an analog man since he does not own a smartphone and has his favourite pen, which is the fountain pen.

Nojima recounts that he received a call from Hakozaki asking him to take him the fountain pen, as he felt guilty when he wanted to contact the manager to inform about his temporary break. He also received guides from Hakozaki on how to enter the home, and was reminded of no need to be rushing.

At around 2:30 p.m, when he arrived at the house and looked for the keys under the pot that was mentioned in the guide, there were no keys to be found but the door was open, so he went inside. Inside the living room, he discovered the body and screamed out loud. While the other members of the Detective Boys are off-screen, Conan follows Nojima, as he is exploring Hakozaki’s working space for the first time. Then Conan goes out somewhere and finds a schedule.

Later, Haibara, the Detective Boys, and Nojima are eavesdropping on Megure's call, as he receives information that a security camera captured several suspicious men. The identity of the victim is revealed by the other end of the call to be an actor named Daiki Fujinai.

Conan calls Haibara to ask her if the police determined Hakozaki’s whereabouts, to which she tells him that the police are focusing on the robber, and forces Conan to explain his action. Conan reveals that Hakozaki called the manager with a payphone in Nagoya around 2 p.m this day to inform his temporary breaks. Conan was able to confirm such details by hearing the conversation between Takagi and the manager.

One notable detail is that Hakozaki has not been able to write for two weeks since he received his job, despite being able to write columns in the blink of an eye. This could suggest chances that the entertainer was abducted, but Nojima is not convinced with this theory. Everyone suddenly remembers the cat, and decides to find the cat and ask everyone in the neighborhood.

Later, Detective Chiba informs that the police were able to capture the robbers, but the robber revealed that they saw the corpse when they broke in, which led them to leave the house in a hurry. He also reveals that Nojima frequently visits the resident, and the neighbors told him that Nojima is quite stalkerish.

Mitsuhiko and Haibara, having heard the conversation outside, deduce that Nojima saw Fujinai attempting to break into the house, and hit him. He ran away in a hurry, but was asked for a favor by Hazaoki, not knowing about the robber, and he pretended to be a witness. Worrying that the others might be in danger, Mitsuhiko contacts others with the Detective Badge while he and Haibara are rushing to the others’ location. Suddenly, the two find the cat and decide to chase it, up to Hakozaki’s secret apartment.

Meanwhile, Genta and Ayumi find Conan gathering something, along with Nojima, who are helping Conan look for evidence, as the two simply ran into each other a moment ago.
