It turns out that Onda's death was accidental. She first had a fight with Yurina Shirosaki, which left her unconscious and bleeding. Several hours later, during the rain, she woke up and, disoriented, ventured in the nearby neighborhood. She was then hit by Ryuji Koyabu's truck, but struggled and managed to climb inside. She then asked Koyabu to drive her back to the river, where she went to retrieve Shirosaki's lost earring. She then took refuge inside the car and died there, having lost too much blood. Both suspects didn't come back in time to find her, and didn't notice her in the car. As it turns out the motive was that Shirosaki had some designs to show Onda, but she made a mistake and was embarrassed to show her. They both struggled over the tablet and ended with Shirosaki striking Onda on the head. Shirosaki revealed that Onda had been especially hard on her and that combined with the mistake she made on the design caused her to lose control. However, Conan reveals that Shirosaki most likely has the voice recorder that Onda had used before they met. The recorder which looks like a brooch is found in her purse and played by Takagi revealing that Onda had already known about the mistakes that Shirosaki had made on the designs. Along with that Chiba reveals that they questioned one of the other employees and revealed that the reason why Onda was so hard with her was because she wanted Shirosaki to be her successor, hearing this she breaks down realizing that she had misunderstood Onda's intentions.

• After Kogoro Mouri's Grand Lecture, screenplay writer Junichi Miyashita returned Detective Conan after an absence of three years.
