Detective Conan Special

Detective Conan Special (名探偵コナン特別編 ,Meitantei Konan Tokubetsuhen) is a manga series consisting of short stories written and drawn by 3 groups: Eiichi Yamagishi (one of Gosho Aoyama's assistants), Yutaka Abe and Denjiro Maru (with Takahisa Taira writing scenarios), and Masaru Ohta and Kazuhiro Kubota.

It was initially serialized in grade-level learning magazines such as 4th Grader and 5th Grader since 1996. When those magazines discontinued in 2010 and 2012, serialization was transferred to CoroCoro Ichiban!. Tankōbon volumes of Special are published under Shogakukan's Ladybug Comics (てんとうむしコミックス ,Tentō Mushi Comikkusu) label. The stories found in Detective Conan Special hold no bearing on the plot of the main comic.

At first, every chapter and case in a given volume were unrelated. Starting from Volume 44, cases in a single volume are related to each other, forming one large story.

Anime adaptations

The Electronic Notebook Map gadget, as shown in the anime.

Through the Detective Conan anime run, only two short stories from Special volumes have been adapted into TV episodes: The Kidnapping Location Case^{(ep 86)} and The White Sandy Beach Murder Case^{(ep 113)}.

The former episode introduces the Electronic Notebook Map gadget, however this device has not been used since this case.

Trivia

• Shinichi disliking raisins originated from the Detective Conan Special Volume 2 Omake, and it is inspired by the fact that Gosho himself dislikes raisins. While this has never been mentioned in the main manga, the anime staff decided to reference it in Memories from Sakura Class.
• The character box of Detective Conan Special volumes have stated since volume 1 that Ran is "Shinichi's girlfriend". This became true during the Kyoto Arc.
