Detective Conan Special

Detective Conan Special (名探偵コナン特別編 ,Meitantei Konan Tokubetsuhen) manga consist of short stories written and drawn by 3 groups: Eiichi Yamagishi (one of Gosho Aoyama's assistants), Yutaka Abe and Denjiro Maru (with Takahisa Taira making the scenario), Masaru Ohta and Kazuhiro Kubota. It was serialized in grade-level learning magazine such as 4th Grader and 5th Grader since 1996. When those magazines discontinued in 2010 and 2012, the serialization was transferred to CoroCoro Ichiban!. The tankobon version are published under Shogakukan's Ladybug Comics (てんとうむしコミックス ,Tentō Mushi Comikkusu) label. The stories found in the Special volumes hold no bearing on the plot of the main comic.

At the beginning, each chapter and cases in each volumes are unrelated. Starting Volume 44, each cases in a single volume are related to each other, making a one big case.

Anime

During Detective Conan's 20+ year run only two short stories from the special volumes have been adapted into TV episodes: The Kidnapping Location Case and The White Sandy Beach Murder Case. The first episode is significant as it introduces the Electronic Notebook Map gadget, however this device has not been used since this case.

Trivia

• Shinichi disliking raisins originated from the Detective Conan Special Volume 2 Omake, which is based on the fact that Gosho dislike raisins. It is never being mentioned in the main manga, but the anime staff decided to add it in Memories from Sakura Class.
• The character box of the Detective Conan Special volumes have stated since volume 1 that Ran is "Shinichi's girlfriend". This became true during the Kyoto Arc.
