Plot

It is now less than an hour until midnight, when Kaito Kid is due to strike. The policemen cannot approach the tiara either because of the ceiling trap, but they can stand at the edge of the hall. Meanwhile, Kazami has analyzed the plans and found no weak points. Amuro agrees, but Kaito Kid is a special case. He wants to send Kazami home, but the latter wants to stay. They split up and check all the security measures in place.

At five minutes to midnight, Amuro and Kazami are still not back, but Azusa comes into the room with Conan, even though she is supposed to be with Ran and Sonoko in the security room next door. Azusa explains that she was tired and actually wanted to go home, but then she changed her mind and wants to follow everything up close after all. Nakamori let her into the room because he is a regular customer at Café Poirot. Conan remembers how Nakamori was in the café during the Iron Tanuki case. Azusa wants to be right up close because she is secretly a huge fan of Kid, but she has never told anyone because she is embarrassed. Conan takes note of this, thinking it can be suspicious. Amuro and Kazami then return to the room.

There is one minute left until midnight, so the policemen, Nakamori, Jirokichi and Conan put on the prepared gas masks. There are no masks for Kazami, Amuro and Azusa, as their presence was not planned. As the museum bell rings midnight, a white haze pours into the hall from the air conditioning system, significantly reducing visibility in the room. Amuro realizes that it is atomized white wall paint; the three without gas masks leave the room coughing while the policemen repair the air conditioning.

After a few moments of ventilating the room, the white mist clears again, even though it has covered everything in the room with a layer of white paint. The display case is unopened, but there is a card from Kaito Kid on top, thanking the group for the tiara. Those present cannot believe it, but Conan interjects that Kaito Kid could have placed the card without actually stealing the tiara. Nakamori has the ceiling trap deactivated and wants to check the display case, which can no longer be seen from the outside due to its white color, but Amuro has reservations: if Nakamori is really Kid, then the tiara could be quickly pocketed during the inspection, by wrapping it around the waist. Azusa suggests that Conan should check the showcase, since as a kid the thief cannot disguise as him. Conan grabs a chair and opens the showcase, but it is really empty. In the next room, Sonoko and Ran sit at the monitor and follow the situation. Sonoko is ecstatic about Kid's robbery, but when the two girls see Azusa on the camera, they become suspicious because she said earlier she wanted to go home.

Since the Kid cannot have left the museum yet, Nakamori sends his policemen out to search every corner of the building. While Jirokichi and Nakamori argue, Conan is deep in thought. Since Jirokichi and Nakamori were wearing gas masks, which they took off while Conan was present, they are ruled out as Kid for him, as he remembers the Blue Wonder gemstone case. Back then, Kid in his disguise as Jirokichi couldn't put on his motorcycle goggles because they would have destroyed his disguise mask if he had taken them off. The same would apply to the gas masks. Although the Kid wore a gas mask in his disguise as Sonoko in the Green Emperor gem case, he didn't take it off again until he had completely removed his disguise, so that does not count. This leaves three people as possible disguise victims: Azusa, Amuro and Kazami.

Conan begins to ask the people questions in private. He asks Amuro about the Café Poirot new dish recommendation he is said to have given to one of the girls in the queue. Amuro tells her that he recommended the café's spaghetti carbonara, "which Conan can also ask Azusa about, as she is proud of the dish". Conan goes over to Azusa and asks her about the new items on the menu. Azusa says that her boss has given the new dish an awkward name that she could not remembe, but that was cooked with charcoal. Conan also asks Amuro and Azusa to remind him why they have come here again. As before, Azusa tells him about the café's air conditioning that broke down. She then asks Amuro if her boss has contacted them yet, to which Amuro replies in the affirmative: He should tell Azusa that it will be back to normal tomorrow. While Azusa wonders why her boss has not contacted her, Conan thinks back to the fact that Kaito Kid was in the queue near her and might have heard the story about the air conditioning.

Finally, Conan questions Kazami, whom he first addresses almost by the name Hida, the cover name Kazami used during the case at Hatoyama Farm, before calling him Kazami. Kazami puts a finger to his mouth and asks Conan not to call him by his real name. Conan replies that Amuro called him that on the phone and asks him where Kazami was on his actual day off. Kazami refuses to answer, and Amuro intervenes and tells Conan that security officers are not allowed to talk about their private lives. Amuro then asks Kazami for news about the crime scene in question, but Kazami has nothing new to report. Looking around the hall, Conan notices something, which is why he asks Kazami for the plans and photos he got from Nakamori. Kazami protests, which is why Amuro intervenes again and shows Conan the photos on his cell phone that Kazami had forwarded to him.

When comparing a bench in the hall with the photo before the fog, Conan has a realization, but he tells Amuro that he did not notice anything, to not raise suspicions from a potential Kid in disguise. While giving him back his cell phone, Conan notices white paint on Amuro's hand. Amuro suspects that he has accidentally touched something, while Azusa and Kazami also notice paint on their hands. Conan looks at their hands: Amuro has white dots of paint on the tips of his right thumb, index finger and middle finger. Azusa has larger spots of color on the back of her right hand over her thumb and index finger. Kazami has spots of color on the palm of his right hand under his ring finger and little finger, as well as dots of color on all three phalanges of both fingers. This gives Conan another insight. He now knows why Kaito Kid wanted to provoke him: to make him turn his gaze elsewhere, Conan thinks, glancing at the three suspects.
