Plot

After the discovery of Anju Tomari's body at the masquerade party, the police are called. Megure, Sato, and Takagi arrive at the scene and begin their investigation. Yokomizo had instructed the staff to lock all exits upon finding the body, which is why the three other candidates who were chosen to have a conversation with the victim, along with Yokomizo, are still present. Since Yokomizo is ruled out as the perpetrator due to the short time between his entering the room and the discovery of the body, it must be one of the other three candidates.

Sato asks the three candidates to remove their masks and introduce themselves. Itaru Kaburagi, guest #19, introduces himself as the CEO of an IT company. Ikuhisa Uedera, guest #31, was next in line to meet the victim and says he is unemployed due to having wealthy parents. Genji Enzaki, guest #27, was third and is a book critic. Since the perpetrator likely wore gloves, which are yet to be found, and the silenced gun is in a plastic bag, gunpowder residue could not be found on the suspects' bodies as it was trapped in the plastic bag. Based on the order of the candidates, Enzaki is initially the most suspicious, but Conan finds confetti under the table in the room. Indeed, during the party, all guests were setting off party poppers, indicating that someone likely hid under the table and threatened the victim with a gun while asking her to keep going with the other candidates, likely to create himself an alibi.

Thus, Kaburagi or Uedera could have committed the crime as well. Besides the victim, there is a second bullet hole in the wall next to the bloodstain. Presumably, the perpetrator fired a warning shot and forced the victim to cooperate. And since the candidates left the room through a separate door, it would not have been noticed if one candidate had not come out again. Enzaki argues that this clears him, but Sato responds that he could have planted the warning shot and confetti as a false trail, so he remains a suspect. Megure now takes the suspects for individual questioning. He asks Yokomizo to participate in the interrogations. Before that, Yokomizo tells his colleague about a curious detail: According to eyewitness reports, the victim had been standing outside the restaurant for a while before the party started, but did not go inside and waited outside in the rain. The reason for this is unclear.

Kaburagi is questioned first. According to him, the victim behaved strangely and looked pale, so he recommended medication and a doctor. Kaburagi claims to always be courteous to women, pointing to the paper where the victim filled in her impression of the candidates, where she wrote "true gentleman" in his column. Sato asks if he noticed anything on his way back to the party room, which Kaburagi denies. He was confident he would win her hand and therefore went to the restroom to fix his hair and did not return to the party, noticing nothing else.

Uedera also mentions that something seemed off with the victim and she hardly said anything. He mainly talked with the victim about his favorite games, but he suspects that she probably was not very interested. Megure points out that the victim noted "funny guy" in Uedera's column on her form. Uedera is happy that the victim seemed to enjoy his stories; he himself found it difficult to read her mood, as there was only a candlestick as a light source in the room from a certain point. Uedera was impressed by this staging when the room suddenly became particularly atmospheric. After the conversation, Uedera did not speak to anyone else because he did not think he had a chance and was therefore disheartened.

Enzaki did not notice any atmospheric staging, but the victim also seemed absent-minded during his conversation. However, if she was threatened under the table with a gun, that would explain why she made so many spelling mistakes on her form. Enzaki could only see it upside down, but he noticed that she had made mistakes in writing kanji and hiragana. Kogoro guesses that Enzaki only discussed intellectual topics with the victim, which Enzaki confirms, saying he talked to her about the books he reviews. Yokomizo remembers that Enzaki was also reading a book while waiting outside the room. Enzaki explains that it was a new book he wanted to recommend to the victim, but he had to interrupt reading because of someone from the staff, and so he could not remember important passages. Yokomizo also says that "it" came unexpectedly.

Meanwhile, Conan has been eavesdropping on all the interrogations with a bug placed in Kogoro's pocket. He wonders what Enzaki and Yokomizo meant at the end of their conversation by "it". Meanwhile, in the party hall, Conan notices two staff members who are trying to clean up broken glass from a guest, but they are not able to locate the broken shards. The female staff member goes to get a dustpan and broom from the old storage. Her colleague asks if she knows where it is, to which she replies that she will use her cellphone flashlight.

Megure, Kogoro, Yokomizo, Sato, and Takagi conclude that they have not really learned much after the interrogations. Sato wants to question the four candidates who spoke with Chihaya in the other room again. Yokomizo says that Chihaya has already questioned her candidates, but they were all so shocked by Chihaya's criticism of them that they could not remember anything. However, Yokomizo still wants to get them, hoping that seeing the suspects again will make them remember something.

Later, Conan and Ran look at the victim's form, which indeed has some spelling mistakes. Conan hands the form back to Takagi, who mentally notes that he should not really show Conan such evidence. Sato remarks that it would have been nice if the victim had simply written the perpetrator's name on the form. "Yes, indeed!" says Conan with a meaningful look, as he noticed something in the form. Meanwhile, Yokomizo joins the group because he cannot find Chihaya. At that moment, Chihaya also joins the group; she was in the restroom. Yokomizo approaches her and wants to know the numbers of her candidates when he slips on a puddle on the floor and falls. While falling, he notices a broken glass, on whose shards he is about to hit his head, but Takagi intervenes with his foot and thus prevents Yokomizo from falling on the shards. Chihaya and her friend Shinobu are reminded of young Jinpei Matsuda by Takagi's action. Just like Matsuda, Takagi also lives on the edge, Chihaya thinks.
