Is MK64 harder than the newer games?  I've only played Mario Kart DS and Mario Kart 8, and they aren't so bad.  Of course, I spent every waking moment of an entire month cramping my hands over MK DS, and I was terrible at it when I first started.  I haven't played enough of MK8, so I can only get first place on 50cc sometimes.

It definitely is, yes. It's more difficult to maneuver on the 64, at least, especially when the controllers are old, weary and worn, haha. I was playing Mario Kart DS that very same day, and I won by far over the NPCs, contrary to how I kept losing to them on Mario Kart 64. I couldn't keep to the road!

Yeah, I've heard N64 controllers can be occasionally unresponsive, especially with fast paced games like Smash.
