Situation

There have been rumors about a ghost appearing around the Restaurant TOMO area every Thursday for the past two weeks, and that ghost appears again tonight at the rooftop of that restaurant in front of the Detective Boys and a college student who just moved in to live with an old woman named Motoko Kanazawa two weeks ago, Mami Mamiya. Kanazawa tells the Detective Boys and Mamiya that she has also been receiving suspicious calls ever since Mamiya moved in. And when Mamiya is about to see the Detective Boys off, numerous footprints are seen outside the accommodation where she and Kanazawa share.

Kanazawa began receiving suspicious calls two weeks ago, while Mamiya began witnessing the ghost appearance every Thursday ever since she moved in.

The Detective Boys take Haibara and Conan to join in with Mamiya at Restaurant TOMO so that the two could help them solve the mysteries on the next day. However, there is no result for now as a staff member named Haru Miyake tells them that there is no way to go to the rooftop of the restaurant, while the chef says they have never heard of any rumour like that. Later, the group decides to go to Kanazawa’s accommodation for further investigation, with Conan and Haibara arriving there for the first time and saying hello to the old lady.

In the afternoon at the residence, we learn that Kanazawa was a former chef of a very famous restaurant, and she owns a secret recipe book that Conan saw earlier when he was trying to look inside the window. Both of the above explain why Kanazawa cooks so well, but she also has to deal with people wanting to have a look at that recipe book. Kanazawa's desk phone suddenly ring, which is quite strange as it is just the afternoon. She decides to answer in hope that the people won’t disturb her further just for the recipe, but there is no one answering the call. Suspicions about who made the call turns to scammers when Kanazawa reveals that she had helped the police solve a scam aiming toward her.

So they return to the restaurant and learn how the ghost even appears in the first place, and decide to have Genta and Mamiya pursue the man behind the ghost. Later that day, the two notice a man with suspicious behaviour that turns out to be a door-to-door flyer distributor, Genta also smells something that is familiar with him inside the accommodation.

Meanwhile, Conan, Ayumi, Haibara, and Mitsuhiko are wondering why the two have gone so long when a sound nearby catches their attention. It turns out that Miyake fall from the cardboard boxes near the ladder connected to the rooftop of the building while trying to figure out what the chef did in the rooftop, as he did hear rumours about the ghost. At the same time after Conan goes to the rooftop to check again, Mamiya asks the boys where Genta went as he stated that the beef stew cooked by Motoko felt similar to one from Restaurant TOMO. It appears that the chef is the one behind everything, except for the scam, and Genta is in danger as he knew this after tasting that stew. Will the boy be safe?

The reason why the ghost could only appear every Thursday is because the man behind the ghost took advantage of the cargo boxes delivered on that day, as it is a fixed schedule, to climb up the ladder up to the rooftop of the restaurant. But every time the man did that, he was wearing a black shirt and a white pants, creating the illusion that it was a ghost.

Based on what Miyake just told the four kids earlier and what Genta did after tasting Motoko's soup, Mitsuhiko, Ayumi, and Mamiya conclude that the ghost is actually the chef, whom they suppose to have taken Mrs. Kanazawa’s cooking recipes and is trying to silence Genta for knowing this wrongdoings. But to their surprise at Motoko’s accommodation, Genta is still safe with the chef and informs the three that the suspicion the four have on him is wrong, and when Motoko’s comes out for the commotion and gets to see the chef, Genta explain that he is just simply Motoko’s son as she calls him with his name: Tomoharu.

As it turns out, Tomoharu had an argument and left home because of disagreements over the direction of the restaurant's development 20 years ago. After many years, he became a head chef of a hotel, but quitted the job to open his own restaurant. He happened to find a building that is near to his mother’s accommodation, and decided to open it there so as to be able to check his mother’s well-being. The reason he performed those suspicious calls (not the scam call or the one asking to see the recipes) was because Mamiya's presence instead of Motoko’s made him worried about his mother’s whereabouts. One misunderstanding happened as the call in the afternoon was performed by Tomoharu as his last attempt of visiting his mother from the restaurant after hearing the rumours of ghost told by the boys earlier today because Motoko thought it was someone asking for the recipe and told them not to disturb her anymore, which upsetted him as he thought that his mother had forgotten him since, but the boys prove the opposite as Motoko still keeps his childhood spoon and fork. The two then reunite again after 20 years apart. Sometime later, Tomoharu invites Conan, Haibara, the Detective Boys, and Mamiya to have as much meal as they want, with Motoko also working along with him.
