Alibi Testimony Murder Case (アリバイ証言殺人事件 ,Aribai Shōgen Satsujin Jiken), known as The Missing Melody in Funimation's English release, is the 30th episode of Detective Conan anime.

It's the 10th anime-original episode, written by Junichi Miyashita. It was first aired in August 26, 1996.

A lawyer's wife is found in her house, dead. Conan suspects the lawyer, but the lawyer has a solid alibi - he was with Kogoro Mouri at the time of death. The recording of a telephone call just before the murder breaks the alibi proving that the lawyer is guilty.

Situation

Kogoro, Ran, and Conan are meeting Souhei Tatsumi, a well-known lawyer with many large corporations as clients, who's office is in a luxury hotel. While there, Conan picks up a phone call from Souhei's wife, Kazumi Tatsumi. During the phone call, a musical melody is heard from Kazumi's side. Souhei takes over the phone call and tells his wife he will call later and asks Conan and Ran to leave so he may talk with Kogoro. Kogoro returns telling Ran and Conan he took Souhei's request to spy on Kazumi and her affair. On the way home, they spot police cars in front of a house and decide to investigate. They found out it is Souhei Tatsumi's house. Inside they learn that Kazumi was found dead in the bathtub.

When a high-powered attorney's wife is murdered under the strangest of circumstances, Conan steps in to make sense of it all. A music box, a telephone call and a staple all point to a killer no one would have expected. How will Conan solve the puzzle and convince everyone of the real criminal's identity?

Conan suspects Souhei to be the murderer but Kogoro confirms his alibi. Conan investigates the hotels and learns the hotel room beside Souhei's is reserved for guests and also learns the musical melody from a musical box alarm clock is custom made for that hotel. At Kazumi's funeral, a man named Shunzou Hirose reveals he was Kazumi's lover.

Evidence

• During the phone call there was music playing, with what sounded like a missing note.
• Souhei was spotted in the parking garage closing his car’s trunk.
• Kazumi’s body was found tied up in the bathroom.
• A staple was found near Kazumi’s body.

• The hotel uses staples to attach tags to the laundry bags.
• Souhei kept a regular room next to his office.
• The hotel has custom made music boxes in all of the rooms.

Conclusion

Kazumi was killed at the regular room Souhei has. Her body was put into a laundry bag and dumped into the laundry chute so that the murder won't draw suspicion to themselves. Then once the body was in their car, they drove to Souhei house to put her body in the bathtub.

Motive

The officers plan to arrest Shunzou Hirose until Conan tranquilizes Kogoro. Impersonating Kogoro's voice with his voice changing bowtie, Conan reveals Souhei Tatsumi to be the culprit. He reveals that after Tatsumi was done talking with Kogoro, he murdered his wife who was in the guest room beside his room.

Afterwards he placed his wife in a bag and pushed her down a laundry chute to the bottom floor. He then went to the bottom floor, placed her body in the trunk of his car and drove her home where he then placed her body in the bathtub. As evidence, Conan gives Megure a tape of the alarm clock in Tatsumi's guest room to compare with the recorded phone call. The alarm clock in the guest room is revealed to have a missing note and matches with the musical melody in the phone call. Souhei confesses to the murder and reveals Kazumi was blackmailing him for money in order to keep his corrupt deeds as a lawyer hidden.
